Hordewatch OOC & Game Discussion

As well as being the main OOC for this part of RoA the idea is that people can put forward game ideas/requests for discussion.

Speaking of which: Darkchylde, did you want to take the Thayvian refugees if enough cross over to keep that group together?  I could set something up for the other orphans.

Yeah for Thay!  It would be really cool if we could get all of us over here and run something.  Perhaps it could even be worked into Thay when Vallah came back.  A dream sequence or a minor teleportation thing that might even help us figure out the blasted puzzle.  :p  *giggles*

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

So, I've been thinking about how this will interact with Vallah's Thay game.

I think we need to do something special to the items/loot in this Orphanage game.  Part of the charm of the Thay game is that we are stuck inside and has no access to outside resources.  We should probably keep that.

So, I think we should make sure all the stuff we get in the orphanage stuff should be labeled "Orphan" or some such, so that we don't use it in the Thay game, until we get the hell out of that blasted place.

I also would like to buy some stuff.  When I created this character, I had no idea what to buy with the starting 2700gps, and I took it mostly in cash-form, thinking I'll have some chance to spend the money...

No such luck :P

So, I'd like to purchase some items, and either label it to "Orphan", or sell it back at the end of the orphan game, so it won't disturb the Thay game.

What shall we do about exps gains in this game?  Kanas probably won't level up or anything, but some of you might.  I have no idea.  He'll forever be level 3, it appears.

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

Well things awarded in the orphanage are supposed to be usable, but as we're in the dungeon, that does make things a bit more difficult.  If Vallah agrees, I think we should get to use the XP right away but save any treasure we gain until either Vallah can just add it to treasure we would already find or until we get out or whatever.  Unless Vallah decides that this happened before or somehow within our current adventure, in which case we could have it right away.

Once we think we know what sounds good to us, I can take it to Vallah our next phone conversation to see what he thinks.

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

You mentioned a four person party.  Does that mean we're waiting for one more person or is that Andredi?
[Edit: Nevermind, I just checked the character sheets, it's Andredi.]

Personally, and this one's for you to decide in the absence of DM Vallah, I think Jyslyn's suggestion is a good one - take the XP but embargo any new items until Vallah gives the okay.

As for how to tie things in: Can I ask whether the dungeon/area you are in is shielded against scrying and teleport spells?  Otherwise, another Red Wizard can simply teleport in, requisition you, take you someplace else and dump you back there later.  It's not like they give much consideration to underlings such as yourselves.

We have a couple more PCs in Thay, not sure if they're heading over or not though.

I think we were actually teleported in, but I don't know if we could be taken out by a Red Wiz other than the one that put us in.

Isiah would definately know the most about that kind of thing of all of us, I think.  Perhaps when he wakes he can tell you.

Zed was an ex-player, who I was NPCing for Vallah. I won't be playing him here.

You could just assume that this orphanage adventure takes place shortly after you finish Vallah's quest (if it ever finishes!). So between the current adventure and the next one, you suddenly gain/lose all the XP and items you earnt/used here.

Anyway, an idea. I'll leave you to it.

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

Okay.  Here's what I have in mind.

1.  All in one group.  If Deepwalker was about then we'd have enough to make two groups of four, split conveniently between the Thayans and the Psychic Underdarkers (plus Alec).  But he's not, and the numbers will help buffer the discrepancy between the high level and low level characters.

2.  A homebrew adventure: No Laughing Matter.  The gnomes of the Dragonjaw Mountains in Thesk hold an annual joke contest with two copper dragons.  The younger of the two, Kyeshyggenal, is a frequent visitor.  This year he arrived early to play a game of hide and seek with the gnomes.  The dragon is given six hours to hide somewhere in the caves and tunnels of the surrounding mountains then teams of gnomes set out to find him.

These games can last days, so it was only when Kyesh did not re-emerge for the joke contest that the gnomes started to worry.  The search parties have returned empty handed, the elder dragon, Narumphunem, is very upset and the contest was a write-off.  The gnomes are asking for help in finding Kyesh.

The Thayan group is there on behalf of their master negotiating for an alchemical formula known to the gnomes.  The gnomes have indicated they would look favourably on the request if you help find Kyesh.

The joke contest is a well-known in the gnomish community and fortunately Schnickle's travels brought him close at the right time to visit.  Schnickle is a welcome guest amongst his racial cousins as are any with him.

Alec (a bard, yes?) was there to entertain the guests at the celebrations and to enjoy the jokes.  He can smell a tale in the making: Seeker Schmeezle and the Lost Dragon.

I'll wait at least till morning for any feedback.  If people are interested I'll reconfigure group 5 to host the game.

Yeah I could keep that group together. I don't get the cross over reference though; I thought this was just to keep them busy while we find another DM for the region? I have a flexible, if a bit contrived adventure for the orphans.

It’s a basic Defend the Town scenario; it will be puzzle solving (who is behind the attacks and why), Combat (duh) and some RP opportunities. I hoping to use this forum to allow the orphans to get a feel for their characters and work out how they will operate as unit. It will also make integrating and removing players very easy.

Well, I can.

I'll pick up Wand of Lesser Vigor, Scroll of Protection from Evil to start.  Let me see if I want a couple more scrolls.

Also, one thing.  I've prepared Spell of 'Close Wounds'.  It's a immediate action spell that heals at range.  I'd like you to cast the spell for me whenever I see the group member actually go down.  The spell actually prevents some of the damage (thus preventing going unconscious/death), but since it's an immediate action, it's easier if you decide when to be cast for me.

Spell Compendium p.48  Note also, if I have any turn-attempt left, I'd like you to apply Divine Spellpower onto it.

CLOSE WOUNDS
Conjuration (Healing)
Level: Cleric 2
Components: V
Casting Time: 1 immediate action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One creature
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will half (harmless);
see text
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)
Your ally falls from a crushing blow, but you don’t have time to reach him. You quickly speak words of power, and the worst of his injuries glow golden and begin to heal.

This spell cures 1d4 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +5). If you cast this spell immediately after the subject takes damage, it effectively prevents the damage. It would keep alive someone who had just dropped to –10 hit points, for example, leaving the character at negative hit points but stable. Used against an undead creature, close wounds deals damage instead of curing the creature (which takes half damage if it makes a Will saving throw).

Well, it probably doesn't matter to you since I think you are wearing heavy armor.

Medium Load works sort of like wearing medium armor.  They don't stack.  You simply pick worse penalty.  So you are probably OK.  We also can't run or charge as fatigued, so there's little difference between medium and heavy armor anyways.

You get your 'Max Dex Bonus' also lowered, but since we are all getting -2 Dex...probably won't be an issue.

I was lightly loaded, but -2 strength from fatigue lowered my carrying capacity, and put into medium load.  I have light armor on, so it's an issue for me :P

Well I can actually carry a bit more and still be carrying only a medium load.  And if I got to pick, anyway, between the worse penalties of carrying a heavy load or wearing the heavy armor, should I also be able to carry a heavy load anyway then?

I'm asking because I could carry the extra stuff that you guys can't.  That's something Jyslyn would do, anyway, even if it put her in extra danger.  Except for Rjak/Jack.  He could go hang himself, but thankfully he's not here to worry about anyway.  :p

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

Well, I doubt Isiah needs anything to be carried.  He's not wearing armor or anything.

Since Andredi doesn't, then I think we are all set.

I had a lot of mundane equipment like ropes, lanterns, etcs.  Some of them things are like up to 5 lbs range.  I kept myself just within the light load, so the reduction of strength screwed me :P

Not me, I'm not dropping anything.  :p  *giggles*

Seriously, Jyslyn will follow the others because it is probably in their best interests to do so even though she doesn't usually like running from a fight.  She will also try to stay at the back of them so that if they are caught up to, she can try to inflict as much pain as possible and possibly turn back their attackers before they harm her friends.  :)

It's not really going to do much good, since unless we plan on leaving Jyslyn behind (Isiah sure isn't going to do that), we'd all be slowed to her movement rate, anyway.  With heavy armor, I don't think she can run faster than 60 feet a round, at most, anyway, and since we're already exhausted, I'm thinking that a speed of 40 feet per round is really the highest we can keep.

Yeah, with the fatigue, the only reason I dropped stuff is it actually matters to me :P

Besides, I figure we don't need stuff like lantern and rope (Unless Andredi has a brilliant idea and go "Hey, we can use those stuff to create a quick and dirty fire-wire trap, to delay the pursuers." or something.  Alas, Kanas has no skill in such crafty things)

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

So, about the Keep itself.

Let me get this straight.  We are 5 minutes away.  So this means, if I want to, I can make it there in 2.5 minutes (My movement is 40', twice as fast as Jyslyn).

Does the Keep have a cleric I can run to get some Lesser Restration?

Is there any place in the Keep where I can get 3 (4, if there's no cleric who can cast Lesser Restration) scrolls of Lesser Restration?

If my assumption is correct, I can run ahead to the Keep, get some scrolls, and come back in something like 3-4 minutes.

Not to mention I can warn the Keep people.

Then again, we aren't saving much time, if we get there in 5 minutes.

Any idea this is what we should do?  I'm mostly interested in getting scrolls of Lesser Restration, so we can get rid of this fatigue.  It's bugging me a lot.

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

LOL yes technically you could do that. There are Clerics in attendance that could assist you but if you are going to do that then I think your character might have gone ahead long before now? Provided that I had given you more warning than five minutes that is. That is unless he jumpy about leaving his colleagues behind.

So I give you the choice now; stay with them up to now and try to make it there and back in the five minutes or say that he went ahead before?

Wait, if you try to go now, by the time you get back they would be close enough to the keep for it to not matter.

I've got several, but I'm not sure if I want to burn any XPs. . .  don't have a whole lot of GPs, anyway.  Since this game here is only temporary, I'm not going to be using any expendable items, anyway, that's just going to be a big headache when we go back to Thay, I think.

Anyway, assuming I don't keep forgetting that I'm supposed to check this part of RoA again, I'll post something here in the morning.

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

Well, I figure any consumables we use, we can pay the cash value and still retain it in the Thay game.  That way, we are only adjusting the cash on hand which shouldn't affect the Thay game.

I'll be playing this campaign like any other and spending consumables when I think it's needed.  And just adjust the cash.

Yes, well, that works fine if you've got cash to spend. . .  me, not so much.  :p  23 GPs doesn't buy you much of anything. . .

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

Hey guys don’t sweat it. This isn’t a regular game and I don’t really want you doing anything that will alter your Sheet for the Thay game one bit.

I figured you would have separate sheets; one here and one in the Thay region. Any adjustments you make her shouldn’t be made on the Thay region; that goes without saying right.

I had also planned to make items and equipment available to you through the Army. That way you get to use a lot of equipment but you don’t own any of it. I’m still not sure that you should be able to carry XPs from here to there. This region will be combat heavy for the most part so you will earn a lot XPs which you can use in turn to create items, the GP cost for the items would be absorbed by the army and likewise, any items that still function when you are done here would stay here in the keeps armory.

That’s what I had planned, so feel free to make anything you need, like scrolls. I suggest writing lots of those.

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

Eh, you might want to think about the equipment issue you are giving us, then.

I mean, if you are letting us use things like scrolls and wands for free, I and Isiah probably would want like 100s of those to just burn through *laugh*.  Or, do we have to write those ourselves?  Can I not get the protection from evil scrolls I sort of wanted, then?

Give us some sort of guide line?  Like 1000gps worth of 'consumables' (scrolls, wands, etcs), double if we can craft ourselves (Since you'd spend only half as much when you craft), and such.

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

LOL.

It’s not going be an unlimited supply. You will be issued the equipment on an as needed basis. You can request anything you want but that does not mean you will get it or the amount that you requested.

You can scribe yourself of course, I mean how many scrolls can you scribe in 20 days? How many Scrolls will your XP allow you to write? These little things will keep it balanced.

This is group is my little pet project as I try to work out certain game mechanics and familiarize myself with combat and spell rules. I’ve been away for so long certain rules have evaporated from my memory. But I still remember how to keep things balanced and I can’t jolly well throw you to wolves without so much as dagger to defend yourself (figuratively speaking of course).

I would really love to talk to someone about what I have in mind but typing it here in an attempt to explain it is pointless as I have trouble expresses myself with the written word. However I would be happy call any or all of you to talk about it. Luckily I can call several countries for free thanks to me working for my telephone company. If you would like further clarification email me and I’ll call you or add me to msn and I’ll explain through that medium.

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

I'm at work so I can't make a phone call and talk about D&D at the moment *laugh*

Well, crafting wise, 20 days will give crafters to create things that's worth 20000gps total, up to 20 items.

But I don't have any crafting feats.  So I'm not getting the scrolls I wanted then?  I'm getting confused :P

I'm in Boston, MA, US.  I won't be home for several hours, and I also have to watch MNF (Pats are playing, and I also have Ocho Cinco on my FF team.)

Hey, Andredi, you know our GM here, right?  Could you, like, call him, or something, to see what's going on?  He hasn't logged on since October 14th.

Re: Main OOC & Game Discussion

With our regular region starting up again under new management, I think I'm going to delete Isiah from here - doesn't look like anything's about to happen here, anytime soon, anyway.
