[Kain] Ep 1 Act 2: Black Magic Woman

Sometime later, Charlotte Hilton, Penthouse Suite

Sometime later, in Ms. Lafouche's suite, the heroes are able to more comfortably talk with the singer. Her suite is well decorated and there are several overstuffed chairs in the lounge area of the suite. She poured herself a massive glass of apple juice and sat down.

"Okay, gentlemen..the entity that spoke through me wanted me to help you find my missing gear. Something about Robert's guitar is essential to it and the dark man."

"They took my damn brother! Your mysterious voice can take his guitar and stick in his rabbit hole."

Simon was clearly less than sympathetic to the loss of some hoodoo musical junk while a human being had been taken.

"If I find your stuff in the process of finding him then that's all well and good but let's not get confused about whether or not guitars are more important than people. Whatever mister "so mysterious he talks through proxy chicks" has to say on the subject."

OOC:
During the time jump Knighthawk, whose armor is nearly out of power, departs but wishes the group luck.  Mr. Impossible who had started the fight in his “Remarkable” persona, returns from dropping off the wounded women at the hospital.  After geeking out over meeting Atlanta Max, Impossible goes with the others to the Penthouse.

Upon entering the room Impossible whistled. ”Wow.  I’m in the wrong line of work.

After the brief, yet tense, interaction between Yeomen and their host Impossible speaks up.  Normally the jokester his tone is quite serious. ”We’re going to find him.”

"I mean hell we got Atlanta Max with us.  Thats gotta give us a serious edge.

Re: [Kain] Ep 1 Act 2: Black Magic Woman

Volt watched the exchange quietly, considering their group. It was obvious that Yeoman didn't care worth a whit about the stolen items and Volt was rather inclined to agree with him on that particular subject. The brother would be his own first priority. After they got him back, finding the items would move back to prime motivator.

Still, both goals were most likely going to be so intertwined that it didn't matter which one was pursued, they'd find both in the end.

"Impossible's right. We will find your brother. And, likely the stolen items with him. There's no reason that the goals be mutually exclusive, in case anyone's gotten that idea," he said, turning to LaFourche, "But, make no mistake... if the choice is presented to choose between your stuff and his brother, you'd better have a back-up plan to unsteal the gear. I for one won't hesitate."

The lightest crackle of electricity played across his knuckles, something that had become almost reflex when he was irritated and not focused on keeping his identity secret.

"Of course we'd do all we can to get your brother back. Marie says firmly as she takes a few steps back from the Southern Bowman. "I don't know the specifics of why the mage took the things he did. I suspect that it all ties into Robert Johnson. I knew that he was different when I channeled him but he never shared anything about himself like the others did. He kept enough.. whatever it is .. identity to keep me from probing his past. He would let me use his skills, but never more. There are the legends, that he sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads one summer night to be the best bluesman of his generation. I suspect whatever thing the mage will be doing will involve that."

Remembering there was more going on than their own problems Yeoman popped in his ear-bud and tuned it to the police band.

Time to find out how much damage Hardbody did.

The word on the radio was that Hardbody put the first responders into the critical care unit by smashing their van with the armored car.

"That could work," She says with a smile. "I'll call my friend over at the school and see if he can get us in to the secure wing of the library, it's got a lot of old books and documents in a controlled area. We could use the hands on approach."

Elsewhere in Charlotte

The spread was one of the worst he'd ever seen. Mojo scratched his ear as he looked over the well tooled cards on the velvet cloth. The knight of swords was out of the spread now, as was the mage he set into play. It was a good thing he'd stayed out of it, the lose of someone like Alec was bad enough. He'd been subtly working on mentoring him, for another, but if he had been taken ..it would be been far worse.

As it was, the 'sponsor' had stepped in to nudge things along.

"That is one evil spell that he's building. He muttered as he sipped his corona and waved for another. Luckily it seemed the gang was working the right path.

The Next Morning, Outside the University of North Carolina @ Charlotte's Social Sciences Building

Jennifer Lafourche leans against the wall of the building while she waited. She was nervously smoking a small cigar as she watched the early morning crowd of students go back and forth while humming an old bayou tune to herself. She wondered what sort of 'look' the guys in spandex would do in the day light. Her own sense of responsibility told her something big was building and she needed to figure it out.

A casting of the bones last night hinted to more than they had learned at the club. Times like this she wished she had her great grandmother's knack for the Art instead of the Sight.

Re: [Kain] Ep 1 Act 2: Black Magic Woman

The Next Morning, Outside the University of North Carolina @ Charlotte's Social Sciences Building

Ben strolled onto campus wearing a simple t-shirt and jeans. He watched the students walking between classes and smiled, remembering his own days back at GT. He also had some residual happiness from the previous night, since somehow Jenny hadn't been too mad at his disappearance and took his explanation of being stuck in the bathroom by one of the dogs at mostly face value. The fact that he had managed to get the star's autograph and a personal note to Jen hadn't hurt either. A second date had been scheduled. Now, they just had to get this nuttery taken care of, get the archer's brother back and life could go back to normal. Normal as it got for him, anyway.

As Ben walked up to the library, his smile dipped, remembering his failure at getting into the library systems. The fight had taken more out of him than he'd realized... and he had to admit, the school's firewall was decent enough. One of the good things to come out of the terrorist fears of the past years. Noting LaFourche, he altered his course.

"Pretty sure it's illegal to smoke that close to the doorway," he said wryly, turning up one side of his mouth in a lopsided smile.

Jennifer looked the man who had walked over to comment to her carefully. She was feeling a bit better in the daylight, most magics like the ones unleashed last night didn't stand the power of the morning sun. Just in case though she had come prepared, she reminded as she patted her pocket.

"I'm off the path, and downwind of the entryway." She said with a grumpy grimace as she sipped her coffee.

Lewis appeared a little shorter, and out of shape.  With his powers Lewis could take on just about any form he could think of but he found he was most comfortable in his old body.  Wearing Jeans and a Myth Foundation T-Shirt with the Old School Greek helmet logo, Lewis was also wearing a back pack.  Taking a long slurping drink out of a Burger King cup, the unlikely Hero waved. "Sup Guys."  Only able to positively Identify Jennifer, Lewis scanned the others quickly trying to figure out who was who from last night.  "Max isn't here yet?"

He kept a wary eye... maybe he was just paranoid, but all this supernatural mumbo-jumbo just kept him in a state of perpetual willies. Ben was fine when it was a supervillian spouting off some inane speech about how he was going to rule the world or rob a bank or the like. But, hell hounds that could pass through walls and were only affected by salt and sorcerers who used the instrument of a dead man to gain power and said dead man having made a proverbial deal with some, or even the, devil... way out of the comfort zone.

Hours pass as the heroes move through the old archive of the library with the focus on one piece of blues folk lore that might give them a hint to where the reputed 'bargain' between Robert Johnson and the Devil went down.

All in all it was a frustrating expedition through the stacks. For Max, he had to slow down occasionally, flipping though the old books carefully to keep them from exploding in tatters and old faded ink. Still, his ability to operate at speed, helped him thumb through them quickly. For Yeoman and the others it was flipping though the books and trying to follow up on the trail that the senior hero found.

Around two in the afternoon, Yeoman found an old record of a new deal archivist who was interviewing one of the singer's peers. It was a long drawn out record, scratchy and distorted but it mentions something tangible.

The Aldridge Plantation in Mississippi, a small crossroad deep in the abandoned estate.

Question was: How do they get there before midnight.

"Step back everybody."

Max reached up and hit the "ANY" button.

With a whir and groan, a chat program (Kilroy COM) opens up and starts playing a audio log. It's clearly a manufactured response as various phrases and words come from a wide spread of sources. Music, and movies seems to be the biggest part of the message.

"Hello Campers.. this is WRA-Kilroy, on the air. I was asked by someone to give you dudes a righteous lift to someplace closer to the middle of no where. Don't ask us who, since you most likely won't believe me. Just believe you me that I can get you within about 2 hours legal travel time of your destination."

"Your going to help us?"

Yeoman's tone seems less that convinced but he comes to a decision quickly.

"If you can do it then let's get it done."

His voice turns a little cold when he continues.

"Fair warning though. The thing with the yacht was funny. Hell he had it coming and worse. But if this is a prank and it interferes with me find my brother I will hunt you down and put an arrow somewhere you will not like."

"I'm a very good hunter."

Be at the Barker Storage unit 5-4-8 in Downtown Wilmington in anytime after 20 minutes from now. Sorry that we don't have assets closer to get you there but that ISN'T how I usually set things into play. I don't have anything closer. The car will get you to where you need to go. The trunk is shielded for anything electronic made after 1980, I suggest if you have anything technical put it in there. Directions will be in the glove box and the key will be in the left rear tire well.

The mixing of so many movie actor voices makes it hop and skip and it's clear that the software they are using is trying to keep up with their typing.

Max rubs his chin in thought. His mind jumps into over drive as he contemplates all the ways this could end. 32,042 ways they could die, 102,870 they could be maimed or crippled. 29,900 ways civilians could be injured,(22 ways a small cute but fuzzy cat could lose the third nail on its back right paw.)
But then max contemplated the ways they could succeed without him. 2. Honestly 1 and a half. The answer was clear to him.

"Alright poindexter. Let's do it."

The only response from the computer is the printer kicking out directions. First is marked 'Pick up transport here' at the local airport storeage lot and there is a long twisty set of directions to a spot in nearby Gastonia at a rental warehouse.

Circled is a unit labeled '221 b'.

A quick trip to Gastonia, revealed the storage locker held an old police cruiser with a note on it.

Sorry about the ride, but the way you're getting to where you need to go requires an old style car. The glove compartment has a GPs to get you to the spot in Wilimington that will get you to where you're going. Any sensitive electronics should be put in the trunk before you get there.

PS. Put the GPS in the trunk or glove box before you arrive at the Wilmington location.

Mr. Impossible turns into Elwood from the blues brothers and moves around to take a look at the car and nods in approval.  "It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas."

His voice switches back to normal.  "Shotgun"

Yeoman opens the door, swings into the drivers seat, and cranks the big Detroit engine.

Revving the engine he says,"Wilmington's in the wrong damn direction...I hate magic."

Re: [Kain] Ep 1 Act 2: Black Magic Woman

The trip to Wilmington goes as fast as Yeoman can get without drawing police attention. Of course the car was still going at a good clip on the backroads. The bad part was the radio didn't work and there was only one cartridge for the 8 track player in the car.

After a bit of driving, the location comes into sight. A massive warehouse with one open door in the front and the other side opening out to the ocean.

[Wilmington NC, Mysterious Warehouse]

Roaring into the parking lot at 95+mph Yeoman aims the two tons of Detroit steel directly at the building.

Halfway across the lot he throws the car into a skidding spin sliding through the warehouse threshold and coming to a stop some 5-10 feet inside the building.

Almost as quickly he rolls out the window and lands, bow in hand, nearby.

Volt felt it better to have multiple angles of attack as they approached and voluntarily bailed out as they neared the location. It absolutely had nothing to do with the driving style of the bowman. Nope, no relation at all.

Volt flew in low as the car swung into the parking lot, moving to the nearest window and trying to get a look inside. He could feel the build-up of electricity inside him as the anticipation of action built.

Stretching out of the passenger side window he moves fluidly to the top of the car.  Standing there he stretches his neck up a few feet more than it should go as he looks around the warehouse.

"So what are we doing here again?"

Middle of Nowhere, Mississippi

As soon as Yeoman cleared the entryway of the warehouse, everyone in the car felt like the bottom of their stomach had dropped out. For a moment there was a feeling of nothingness, then a sensation of spinning around.

Yeomen landed on the ground, bow and arrow ready, but it wasn't the concrete foundation of the warehouse in Wilmington that he landed on but the packed dirt of what seemed to be an abandoned tobacco storage warehouse. The smell of old tobacco, mildew was mixed with the new smell of burning electronics as a small array of boxes around the warehouse door sparked and smoked fitfully.

Wilmington NC, Mysterious Warehouse

Volt's flight took him by the window just as the car entered the clearly empty warehouse. Just in time to see the flash of light and the car vanish in a surge of power that he could sense with his powers. LOTS of power. Odds were every breaker and fuse box in a 10 block radius was tripped.

Re: [Kain] Ep 1 Act 2: Black Magic Woman

[Wilmington NC, Mysterious Warehouse]

Volt quickly turned and dropped to the ground just outside the door.

Huh... guess that wasn't just excitement, Volt thought, moving to examine the edge of the doorway.

He knew a little bit about teleportation tech, just barely enough to know that it was expensive and took way too much power for the return. There was usually a direct correlation between the mass of the object being teleported and the energy required to move it. Unfortunately, he had no idea what kind of teleportation had been used... not that it would make much difference. And that was about the extent of his knowledge.

Volt considered his options as he looked over the doorway... if he could find the power input, he might be able to send himself to where ever the others were. Course, that's assuming whatever mechanism the device used was calibrated to a single destination. For all he knew, it might be randomized or a one-shot deal and the next time it was used, it'd atomize whatever was 'ported. Ah, the life of a superhero...

Volt found out a few things when he 'dove' into the dying rig of electronics. It was way past his skill level, that was for sure. The smell of burning components filled Volt's nose as he felt through the rig in front of him. The power couplings were gone, that was for sure as he felt the remaining computer code cores. They had power, for about another two minutes but there was no way he could get the building's power grid to open another teleport event.

OOC: I'm gonna need a HP for extra effort for you to 'juice' the system again. Then I'll need a toughness check (vs 25 diff)

Volt gritted his teeth as he decided. No time to waste.

"This is gonna hurt," he said to no one in particular as he reached down, gritted his teeth and channeled more power than he normally felt safe doing into the dying machine.

The pain was a special kind of hurt. The kind you hear about. The kind you say you could take, but really never want to test if you could. The kind people don't ask for drugs to help with because they can't remember how to speak. The kind that Volt was experiencing right up until the darkness claimed him.

His last thought was, Sure hope this woAAAARRRRGGGGH....!

Extra effort for +2 ranks to Electrical Control.
Spending a Hero Point to shake off the fatigue.

Re: [Kain] Ep 1 Act 2: Black Magic Woman

Middle of Nowhere, Mississippi

Volt's awareness of his arrival is fleeting at best as his attempt to follow the rest of his team is successful. Somewhere. In the fact that the machinery does teleport him hundreds of miles to the location where his friend's arrived a minute or two earlier. No so much in the fact that the machinery's program code had built up errors. Such as the cancellation of the momentum of his passage through the gate event wasn't entirely canceled.

The exit gate flashed as Volt came sailing through and bounced off of the roof of the car and on past through the window on the other side of the barn and into the
fields beyond. Landing loosely in a pile in the tobacco stalks outside. Out cold.

OOC: You came out of the gate device KO'd and bruised. Tough roll on the save.

With Volt’s sudden appearance Mr. Impossible shifts into a more than life size Pillsbury dough boy.  When the Hero hits Impossible’s white fluffy stomach he makes the Pillsbury “oouhoo” sound, then collapses around him in the form of a giant cupcake to help cushion his fall as they tumble to the ground.

Shifting back to normal he sets Volt down on the ground checking him over, exhibiting some very real medical knowledge as he does. ”Nothing broken, pulse is fine.  Looks like what ever happened just rang his bell a little.”

”Speaking of.  Umm what the hell just happened?”
