Duel #184: Ankou vs. Thraxis

19:15, Today: Thraxis rolled 10 using 1d20+2 with rolls of 8.  Initiative, duel 184.

GLHF.

I was going to say good luck to everyone on saving throws, but that's likely to be a bit one sided.  :(

The Ankou walked into the arena with Rex the dinosaur at his side.
They had a long preparation planned, so he went straight to it and did not budge.

Re: Duel #184: Ankou vs. Thraxis

Thraxis entered the arena with an active imagination as his only companion.  He saw Ankou doing something, and was almost certain that it was magical.  "Flibbertygibbet!"  He called out in a commanding tone as he drew a potion. "Also, your cat seems to have developed a skin condition, among other things, Ankou."

Re: Duel #184: Ankou vs. Thraxis

The Ankou suddenly regretted he had not invested in a few potion as well... This preparation time was going to benefit his opponent a lot more than himself.

Quiet as per usual, he cast another spell while Rex waited some more. He also called on his divine link with the dinosaur to imbue him with a animal aspect.

ooc: 1) You didn't list a DC for my spell craft, but it seems that a 26 should hit it. (it looked like a lv 3 to last rounds lv 2).  Also, you missed incrementing the duration on a spell - not that it matters much, as if we hit round 101 we will both be sad pandas.
2) The DC to identify my spell (including distance) is 24.
3) To be clear, as it's been debated in another thread, I will always use +height to show the number of (often empty) spaces below my character.  So, his position is as if he is standing on terrain of that height.

0) You can't leave your original square during prep rounds except for the last one (IIRC).

1) I think I listed a DC17 -- it actually should have been 18 it seems. Regardless, you identify it as Keen Edge

2) Ankou rolled 13 using 1d20+10 with rolls of 3.  spellcraft to identify Thrawis' spell -- for all Ankou knows, your spell was either Miracle or Read Magic.

3) That is the one and only way to interpret this.

I'll go as soon as you return to your corner ;)

Re 0) Mmhh.. I remembered it said: "Note that PCs and minions cannot move from their starting space during any prep round except the last one." But I just noticed that this is only mentioned in the Spellcombat section. I'm not sure if it was meant to apply to Spellcombat exclusively or written there as a reminder.

I honestly don't care, so I suggest we proceed, but we should have a GM clarify this at some point.

Re 2) How about a regular Megalodon with a breathing apparatus?

I'm posting my prep round 3

Re: Duel #184: Ankou vs. Thraxis

The Ankou was surprised to see Thraxis take off. It made absolute sense though... why would someone stay on the ground when their art consisted in summoning others to fight for them?

Rex moved to a central position in the arena, shifted his massive weight from one leg to the other as a warm-up exercise, and roared.

The Ankou hid behind Rex and waited.

Re: Duel #184: Ankou vs. Thraxis

As for movement during prep rounds, I think it used to be that spellcombat was the only place it ever talked about there being multiple prep rounds, so the fact that movement during prep rounds besides the last is only mentioned there is probably an oversight (which Arkim should confirm and fix if so).  If both of you are okay with ignoring that, though, I have no problem with it.

The arena's ceiling is only 25ft high, so the max height someone of medium size can be at is +4.

Ankou -- mind listing the exact details of your gear to me in private lines?  Arkim recently was saying people needed to do this, I've been bad about it though, so I can't fault you for not having done it.  But especially important in a match with a ref since I can't just check your character sheet to find out what your gear probably is.

So, I reread persistent spell and found out that I didn't need to roll twice since I failed the first... which I'm hoping is what you were pointing out by your whistled "innocence."  I could also have used the hero point to fly into Rex's tummy to block your line of sight.  That would have been clever of me too.

updated post with the rest of my actions:

The Ankou had expected minions to appear, so the two leopards came as no surprise. Or actually as a little surprise... he had thought Thraxis would have opened with something grander. A big bear, or a dinosaur...

The Ankou moved towards Thraxis, ignoring the Leopards entirely. He pointed his rod at the flying half-orc and uttered the words of a spell.

Thraxis fell victim to the hew and was paralysed in the instant, floating helplessly just under the ceiling. Much to Ankou's surprise, he did not drop... but just floated up there.

Rex squeezed past the leopards and leaped in the air to bite Thraxis! The helpless summoner was unable to dodge and almost lost his leg to the vicious fangs!
Rex landed safely back on the ground, while the paralysed half-orc struggled to maintain his balance...

Ankou used his shirt to gain more mobility and went into hiding behind the dinosaur.

Re: Duel #184: Ankou vs. Thraxis

Sweet.  Thraxis appears to be unaffected by the hold person spell.

Problem with the dino attack, though: it looks like he took his standard in the middle of his move action, which you normally cannot do.  Does he have a special ability of some kind to let him?

EDIT: It also says under falling that you don't have time to cast a spell (as a standard action - exception is made for immediate actions) while falling less than 500 feet.
