Las Vegas, Nevada: Rescue Crew

Those intending on assisting Laney with rescuing the people trapped on top of the nearby buildings begin to form up by the cargo truck.

[Private to Joint: Of course if you don't want the cargo truck to be used in the rescue....you might want to say something.]

OOC: I am going to assume that your only taking the item on your person and not the back pack provided to you. If you want to leave anything with the MRAP please note as such on your equipment sheet.

Laney checked that her pistol and rifle were both loaded, round chambered but safety on.

"All right. Let's get this show on the road!

"I can drive, unless someone else wants to. Whoever's riding shotgun, you handle the Motorola."

OOC Note: I sketched a rough route in and to both buildings on the map. Assuming the path is not blocked!

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 7):

Laney opened the sun roof to facilitate communication with Eddie. She had 2 Motorola radios, one was given to Arani so the other went to Eddie. Laney herself could operate the truck's set if it came to it and Arani was busy.

"I don't think I've seen an external fire escape west of the Mississippi. Vegas isn't like New York; it's all interior fire stairs.

"North building is one story. South building is built up so it's more like one and a half. Both will need people to drop down and hope for the best.

"Aside from the hills to the east, the only close vantage point is the water tower that Ace climbed up earlier today."
She pointed the large structure. It was a couple hundred yards away from the Metro police shooting range. "I don't think there's anyone up there now, sorry. We didn't think of it."

Arani looked at Laney, holding the radio she had been given. As she hadn't been the one to climb the tower she had no idea how long it had taken Ace to do it, and if they were able to afford the detour on their rescue mission.

"Ace already climbed up there and had a look. He took pictures and video. There is a north building with five people and a south building with seven. Both are surrounded by hundreds of crazies.

"When we looked before, no one was moving or signalling. No one answered the Motorola, but they were talking to us using CB Channel 9 (emergency channel) last night. Granted, we could wait and send someone back up the water tank, see if anything has changed, but that will take time. We gotto make our move sooner or than later or else we get stuck in "analysis paralysis" where you put off taking action to gather more information.

"What is a spotter gonna see up there now, that Ace didn't see before? It's kinda like diminishing returns at this point. Let's decide quick, because I am starting this here bus up and rolling in about five seconds."

She didn't want to sound pushy but speaking personally, it was very tempting to just sit tight where it was safe and observe a little more, gather a little more information.

Laney drives over to the other rnage, taking the 'long way' and stops pretty much were the MRAP and cargo truck had stopped in the middle of the night to asses the situation.

Each building is surrounded with zombies and there is no obvious way to reach either building without having to drive through 10-20 feet of Zombies.

Both building have people on the roof who begin waving. The south building has about 5 people on it, and the north building has about 7 people on it. Next to the people on the buildings are a few large duffel bags. Realizing they are about to get rescued a few rifles can be seen being picked up, but are slung across people's backs.

OOC: From here on out it is 'combat posting'. That is make ONE POST then wait for the GM to post. If you make a second post I will nuke it. What I want to avoid is one or two players postign back and forth for 10-20 posts before the other get a chance to post.

If you are leaving ANYTHING normally listed on your person back at the MRAP, please note as such in your equipment sheet.

Putting the truck into gear, Laney slowly drove up East Carey Drive, sizing up the situation.

"The crazies... they ain't too smart. I think we can decoy them away from the buildings, get them to chase us. Into the desert or the farther ranges, then double back. This area's got tracks all over the place, they would have needed side roads to service the shooting ranges because no one's gonna walk all that way out here!

"If all we do is break up those crowds a little, get them moving in different directions, that might give us the leeway we need.

"Annabelle, please call up the people again on the radio, see if we can talk to them. Get them to move to the centre of the buildings, keep out of sight from the crazies."

She still planned to circle the north building if possible, at least once going counter-clockwise, before heading off further east on East Carey Ave.

OOC: My apologies, it was a busy week and I just dropped the ball!

Those on the roof all look to be civilians (no distinct military, or law enforcement uniforms can be seen), none appear to female, although at 200 plus feet away there could be a few short haired women with small bust sizes mixed in. There is nobody small enough to be a 'child'.

Annabelle's radio transmission goes unanswered. But the people on the roof clearly see her and wave. Some jump up and down. One man is holding something rectangular up high, and is making a cutting motion across his throat.

[Private to Eddie Thomas:

Let's assume these folks have cool enough heads to survive out here for this long and they won't do anything foolish. And yeah, they said they were out of ammo but they probably got at least a last bullet left, each."

Damn, it didn't seem to be working good enough. Instead of continuing along East Carey, Laney turned left and began to circle the north building through the parking lot on the north side.

"Someone, yell at 'em to hide out of sight, so we can decoy the pack away from them."

She had her gun ready and loaded, though she kept the safety on to avoid wasting bullets when it wasn't necessary: For now, they just had to lure the crazies away, and she'd rather save her bullets for when they'd get in a situation they couldn't back their way out of.

Speaking of helmets, she put hers on.

For her part, she put on her seat belt, made sure her rifle was stowed behind her seat and wouldn't go flying. Pistol secure in holster. She honked the horn to get the people on the roof's attention, pointed at a likely-looking spot on the Southwest side of the building, then started driving forward at about 30 miles per hour. Black diesel smoke spat out of the exhaust as they jumped the kerb onto the lawn. "Dear lord Jesus, protect us and help us get these folks out in one piece, thank you Lord, Amen!"

She intended to go straight in, then stop as close as possible to the wall. Those on the roof could jump down onto the hood and then get into the back.

OOC: Annabelle should have at least 2 or 3 donated STANAG mags that will also fit AR15s.

God must have heard Laney's prayer....The military cargo truck jump the curb and plows through the crown of zombies. The cargo truck bounces up and down as a number of the zombies are run over and crushed by the vehicles wheels.

Through a combination God's good will, Laney's driving and the horde of Zombies the cargo truck stops just inches from the building's wall.

It takes several seconds before the people on the roof begin to climb down from the roof onto the hood of the truck. From there they climb over the cab and into the bed of the truck. They also have with them a large duffle bag, similar to that of a military 'sea bag' that is handed down and passed to the back of the truck as well. The people being rescued (six men and one woman) hug, shake hands or pat the backs of Eddie, Isabel, and Arani.

Zombies surround the cargo truck from three sides. The moaning is so load that people have to shout in order to be heard. The Zombie claw at the sides and rear of the truck but don't have the height to reach into the truck bed from the sides, or the driver and passenger side windows. Three Zombies are tall enough to be able to reach in from the rear of the truck, but appear to not be able to climb in. Still their hands pose a threat for anyone who ends up in their grasp....

16:06, Today: Darkside Trooper rolled 87 using 7d20 with rolls of 15,5,6,19,6,20,16.  People on 1st building jump on truck.
No body slips off truck and into the waiting arms of Zombies!

OOC: No one is near the Zombies trying to grab people, but it might be an issue as more people get in the truck. I'll need a post from each player character. Consider yourself in combat since the truck is surrounded by Zombies.

Laney, to back out you will need to make another pilot truck roll. Same difficulty as before (-15%).

"Here, here... ammunition." Annabelle hands out the magazines to those who have just arrives in the back. When they are all on board she duck down to Laney."Go, go they are all on board." She then gets back up in the gun ring to help with directions if it is needed.

Las Vegas, Nevada: Rescue Crew

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 43):

Having this many of the crazies around her at once made Laney sweat even more in the cool dawn air. Their moaning drove into her skull like a ice-pick. Adrenaline caused the blood in her veins to pound, if anything, the sound of moaning got louder and more insistent. The wounds and weathering, decay and smell of the mob drove home these people were not just crazy but yes, maybe they actually were dead, or at least something other than alive as she knew it!

Annabelle's voice snapped her back to where she was and what they were doing. No need to panic, girl, this is just another day at the office, she thought, getting herself under control. "I hear you, honey! Everyone hang on! Let's get the hell out of here!" Throwing the truck into reverse she stepped on the throttle. The engine roared and spat smoke out of the stack as they lurched and skidded backwards, slowly gaining speed as they rolled over fallen bodies, crushing them under the massive tyres.

OOC: Donated 1x 5.56mm mag to the cause!

Las Vegas, Nevada: Rescue Crew

As Laney backs up the tires of the cargo truck loses traction for a few seconds as some zombies trapped under the tires are grinded into the ground. Once the tires gain traction the cargo truck leaps backwards. As the truck hits the curb it jumps rather forcefully but easily negotiates the obstacle. Just as Laney is about to regain control, the truck hits the island in the middle of East Carey road.

Again the truck easily travels over the obstacle, but it's a rough ride for everyone, and a few people in the back are almost thrown out of the truck's cargo bed. The truck continues traveling in reverse and hits some large rocks which make a loud banging sound as the truck stalls out.

The horde of zombies from the north building follow the cargo truck. A large number of zombies from the south building move towards the stalled out truck as well.

Laney frantically tries to restart the engine, but it fails to turn over and start.

Within a minute the cargo truck is completely surrounded by Zombies. As before they are unable to reach up along the sides, but they can reach in from the tailgate.

OOC:

Please make a save vs horror factor (get a 15 or higher and you pass). Fail and your pretty much unable to do anything for a full melee.

If you want to attack the Zombies surrounding the truck feel free to post four full rounds of melee actions (i.e. one full minute). Yeah that's a lot of actions, but you might be able to thin out the horde.....maybe.

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 48):

After the truck stalled out, all Laney could do was hold onto the steering wheel and shut her eyes. Her pulse pounded while she tried and failed to breathe in the stink of diesel and decay that enveloped her. Once she was in control of herself she gasped and drew a deep breath.

Seeing that despite their reach, the zombies were unable to climb in, she grabbed her rifle and slung it across her chest.

"Everyone! Engine's flooded but it'll start again! Let's thin out the ones behind us while we got the time, so we can get the hell outta here. Single shots! If the new folk want a magazine, remember that sharing is caring!"

Rolling down her window just enough to poke the barrel out, she began shooting down the left side of the stalled truck, picking off targets clustered around the rear wheels. She concentrated fire on a single target, then moving on to the next when he or she fell down into the mob. Spent brass casings were ejected one after another to fall into the crowd as she methodically aimed and shot.

OOC: To be clear, a failed HF roll effects you for 1 melee turn. Not the full minute (4 melee turns). So I believe Eddie can get in a few turns of actions/attacks if he wishes.

Like most everyone else in military cargo truck, those just rescued took several seconds to recompose themselves. Those who were handed a magazine of 5.56mm ammo unsung their rifles and stared to take headshots at the Zombie's near the rear of the truck.

The woman with the police sniper rifle un-slung the rifle and began mashing the butt stock into the head's of Zombie's along the right side of the truck. The guy with the Benelli M4 shot gun does the same as well. Those with the SMG's, lacking shorter weapons move ot o the way to let the others do the work.

OOC: Only Laney stated how many rifle magazines she was donating. I figure Annabelle, and Eddie both also donated (they are the only other two with rifles), but I need to know how many.

Arani rubbed her temple, having bumped her head when the truck had hit the large rocks, and feeling disoriented for a couple of seconds. When she managed to refocus, she found the zombies having surrounded the truck, and began firing at the closest ones -- that was to say, those closest to the bed of the truck she was in in order to prevent one of those things from latching onto an arm, or worse, her gun. Losing either would be rather bad.

After emptying her magazine into the horde with great effect, she took a deep breath to steady herself before being more economical about her remaining ammo.

Isabel doesn't have many shells for her shotgun and thus opts to bash Zombies heads in with the butt of her shotgun.

[Private to Isabel Tsang: You know a fucked up character death would be Isabel having left the safety off on the shotgun. Then a Zombie tried to pull the gun down. As Isabel and the Zombie fought for the weapon the Zombie inadvertently pull the trigger and Isabel's head gets blown off.]

As everyone does what they can some of the Zombies along the sides of the truck bed start to actually climb up the side! The woman with the sniper rifle, the guy with the shotgun, and Isabel use the butt of their respective weapons to knock the zombies off from the side of the truck. One of the men with an SMG's stomps the Zombies hands as the climb up. One of the other men with an SMG starts using ball pen hammer one the hands of the Zombies climbing up. The third man with an SMG stabs Zombies in the head.

Luckily along the passenger and driver side doors there is nothing for the Zombie to grab on to....

OOC: I noticed yesterday that the book says Zombies can climb at 35%.

The three men with HK416's take careful aim as they shoot into the head of the surrounding Zombies. Together they manage to kill five Zombies with perfect head shots.

Eddie manages to kill three Zombies with single shots to the head.

Laney first puts four shots into a Zombies body to cause it to collapse and fall under the others. She then manages to take out four Zombies with head shots, and another with several shots to the body.

Annabelle and Arani both seem to be the reincarnation of Ann Oakley. Annabelle takes out nine Zombies with head shots, while Arani takes out eleven.

Over all those shooting take out 35 Zombies near the back of the truck. The open area begins to fill with more Zombies....

The sides and front of the vehicle still have Zombie trying to climb up.

One Zombie is already on the hood of the truck, and another one begins to climb up behind it.

On the left side of the truck three Zombies begin to climb up, three others fail to do so.

On the right side of the truck four Zombies begin to climb up, two others fail to do so.

OOC: Please post another melee of actions.

Pass a piloting roll and the engine will start at the end of the next melee.

Sitting back down in the driver's seat, Laney let her rifle lean against the dashboard. Saying a quick prayer (please, God, sweet baby Jesus, deliver us from this evil!) she hit the starter button. The starter whirred impotently, engine apparently still flooded with diesel. But then it caught a little, shooting a gout of thick black smoke out from the top of the stack. After a few seconds it coughed and died.

But at least that was progress! She grinned and paused, just a few seconds, to let the engine clear a little more before trying to start it again.

"Almost there, people, just hang on a little and HOLY SHIT ANNABELLE THEY'RE COMING UP THE GODDAMN HOOD!"

Izzie was a fan of the shotgun, but it seemed in this instance having something with a higher magazine capacity and more available ammunition would've been a wiser choice in hindsight.  That damn 20/20 hindsight.  She continued to hack away with the butt of the shotgun, also wishing she had a machete or even a samurai sword right now.

Las Vegas, Nevada: Rescue Crew

Noticing that she was running far lower on ammo than she would have liked, and that the others were pretty well set up in the firepower category, Arani shifted her attention to trying to prevent the zombies from climbing into the truck.

Of course, she wasn't crazy enough to try and punch them in the face and get a few fingers chomped off, so she focused on axe kicks to the crown of the head and strong kicks to the torso to keep her attacks well away of the zombies' rotting teeth. Twice she landed her foot in a rotting chest, and one time her axe kick devastated a decaying skull as it all but exploded under her heel.

She was going to need to wash her boots after this.

Actions:

13:13, Today: Arani Vasingis rolled 13,10,18 using d20+2,d20+2,d20+2 with rolls of 11,8,16.
13:17, Today: Arani Vasingis rolled 12,13,11 using 2d8+4,2d8+4,2d8+4 with rolls of 5,3,4,5,4,3.  Damages.

Actions 1-2: Power Axe Kick, +2 Strike already added. 10 to Hit, Body hit for 2x (0.5 x 13) = 13 SDC damage

Las Vegas, Nevada: Rescue Crew

As Laney tries to restart the trucks engine everyone else fights back against the Zombie horde. The horde is fought off and no Zombies manage to climb up into the back of the truck.

Annabelle fires into the Zombies climbing up the front of the truck. Her first two bullets hit the lead Zombie in the upper shoulders. As the Zombie crawls/climbs up the windshield Annabelle's third bullets strikes the Zombie in the forehead, causing the head to explode into a shower of skull fragments and brain matter, with some of it splattering onto the young woman.

Annabelle fires a fourth time and hits the second Zombie in the head. This time the bone fragments and brains splatter across  the driver side of the truck windshield, obscuring the view for Laney.

[Private to Annabelle Wright: You didn't need to fire your last bullet.]

Izzie smashes the butt end  of her shotgun into the head of one of the Zombies requiring two good hits to bash the Zombie's head in. As she smashed the butt end of the shotgun into the head of a second Zombie Isabel loses her grip on the shot and it falls into the horde of Zombies and is lost from sight.

[Private to Isabel Tsang: 19:52, Today: Darkside Trooper rolled 10 using 1d100 with rolls of 10.  Isabel lose shotgun? 25% chance.
Shotgun is lost...
]

Eddie takes aim with his M-16A2 and  fires twice, dispatching a pair of Zombies. He fires at a third Zombie but doesn't take it out by himself. One of the recently rescured men blows its head away.

Arani resorted to kicks to fight off the Zombies. It takes her two kicks to knock one Zombie off the side of the truck and two more to knock off a second Zombie. As she kicks a third Zombie  she manages the hit the head and smashed in a head, covering her right boot in brain matter.

The engine to the military cargo truck rumbles to life. With the remains of Zombie brains covering the drivers side of the windshield Laney pulls forward at a slow speed at first and then turns on the windshield wipers at their highest setting.

Several Zombies in front of the truck are run over, a pair of Zombies cling to the front of the truck but slip off and are run over as well.

Izzie cursed aloud when the shotgun slipped from her grasp, a resounding, "F**K!"  She thought for a split second of jumping down to retrieve it, feeling it's loss weighing heavily on her survivability, but reason took hold thankfully for her.  She grabbed her ASP baton and whipped it in a direction away from any colleagues to extend it, ready to bash some skulls.

At that moment she felt the truck begin to slowly move, so instinctively held onto any part of the truck so as to not fall out and join her shotgun at the bottom of the horde.

When the others in the cab yelled back if anyone was ok, she looked around at the others to see if anyone was hurt, and made ready to render aid.  She also replied for herself, "I would be a hair better if I didn't drop my damn shotgun." with a tone of self-berating and an unhappy expression of self-disappointment.

Once the truck finished running over the zombies that were in front of it, and the ride became slightly more comfortable, she reloaded her gun and sighed as she looked at her remaining ammo.

Keeping an eye on the road, Laney asked Annabelle, "please call Joint on the radio. Let him know we're coming to him, we're going to need help for the next run so get ready to roll when we arrive."

To those in the back. "Good to hear everyone's ok! Give them folks some water, please.

"Isabelle, if you got a pistol I'd suggest you stick with that.

"Arani, you ain't got a lot more shells for that Howitzer of yours! You got a Beretta you can switch to? Also, you mind driving? I want to pow-wow with the new arrivals we got back there. It's good we're drawing off some of the crazies, and we're going back for the rest of those people, but we need to make a plan and get our backup closer."

She looked for a place to pull over (the middle of the road would do if there were no zombies close by) momentarily to transfer drivers, if Arani was willing to swap out.

Laney turns the truck around and drives around the horde of following Zombies. At this point the MRAP pulls up alongside. The group of people still on the other building jump and wave. Their shouting cannot be heard over the moaning of the Zombies....

As Laney drives down E. Corey Ave, Joint follows. The horde of Zombies (about half those at the range) follow as well.

When Laney stops this doesn't leave a lot of time before the Zombie horde catches up to the two vehicles.

OOC: You guys can freely talk to the other group. When it gets to the point that the Zombie horde is close enough to be a threat I'll let you know. Map is updated.

As soon as Laney stopped, Arani jumped from the bed of the truck to get behind the steering wheel. Only when she was in place did she look to the other vehicle and give them a brief wave in greeting, not like the loud zombie moaning allowed much in the way of conversations anyway, both in terms of volume as in the amount of time it would take to have it.

Izzie easily collapsed her ASP baton striking it down on it's tip into the hard bed of the truck.  She then drew her M9 pistol and made ready to take shots at the closest zombies as they got closer.  She wanted to talk to the newcomers, but the immediacy of the situation precluded any chit-chat that would have to wait for later.

Seeing the others jumping up and down on the other roof, she felt compelled to yell out, "We'll be back!" attempting to be as reassuring as possible.  She glanced at the group of newcomers to see how they reacted, and see who was among them.

The zombie moaning and approaching herd made it harder for her to make any usual snap judgments about people.

"For now, we gotta go back and grab the rest of these folks. I say we use the MRAP this time to make the pickup, if you're ok with that, Joint?

"We can fit everyone else here in the truck for now. We'll park the truck a lot closer so it will be easier to support the MRAP.

"Any volunteers to go in the MRAP to pickup the other survivors? Three ought to do it. I can drive if Joint is cool with that, and if I do go then Isabel, you might want to stay so we have medical personnel in each vehicle."

Which vehicle was used to go in depended a lot on what Joint wanted. If he didn't want to risk the MRAP then that's just the way it was going to be, but she hoped he would be willing.

"I may be insane, that's true. I am not a psychic, nor am I stupid. You were supposed to wait and provide backup. You had one job. But I guess people decided to take off, and they got fucked up a little. I take it it's not critical or else you woulda' said it. Isabel is up to the job of sewing 'em up better than me, anyways.

"You may not like it but everyone I took with me is fine and we got the job done, at least the first part. I conserved lives just fine."

She raised her voice so that the people in the MRAP could hear her.

"Ok, let's go back to the other range, get folks sorted out, turn these beasts around. Driving through the mob isn't a problem, it's something we found out. If I can get a couple volunteers, I'm taking the cargo truck back to the police range and rescue the other people. The MRAP can stay close, but not too close, to assist if necessary. Again, the mob ain't a problem if you keep moving.

"Come, stay, lay or pray, make up your minds, yall got a choice. You know what I want to do. You all know we can do it."
She wasn't just talking to him, but had her voice pitched to that others could hear her, including those in the MRAP.

OOC: Sorry If I'm posting before others have a chance. I hope it's ok due to the context of this being an exchange between Laney and Joint, but other PCs are invited to participate and she mainly explained a little better what she wanted done, and now the chips can fall where they may.

Yeah real smooth operation with a hundred plus zeds moaning and most likely going to attract more.  How long and how far do we gotta drive to lose them before we can get back to the original task.

Willing to sacrifice your own to save others you are, "Oh my group is okay", but who gives a shit about our own.  Look around, the rules have changed, there is no more back up when things hit the shit.  You can't call for for back up if the people that you do know are the people getting shot up.  And fuck me saying "oh it can't be that bad or I would have said so", we are down two solid men who now may or may not still have bullets in them. Cause people are already going crazy kidnapping women and raping them and shooting at whoever.

We need to do our task given to us, make it out of that alive then set up somewhere.  Then I am all game to go help you save people and make merry.  This vehicle is out of your hair brain schemes for now and your right for once everyone does have a choice.  My choice is to get the injured and the saved, as we have three ladies in here to a safer place and not back into harms way.

"Hey Joint, I hear yeah on all your points and they are good ones no doubt.  But Rob, Jonathan and I, we caught these ladies full story.  So we got three and sniper lady got two that collaborates with these ladies stories.  I think if we get these people out we can get some of them to help us check out Hoover with us, like you said we are down two people.  Rob and Jonathan could cover the vehicles with who ever wants to stay back and the rest would be with us.  We all just met and trust is still being built, but yeah can't lock out everyone right away.  If we go with something like Laney's plan we could be in and out in less then thirty mins figuring how to get these Zed's as Arani calls them off our backs."

My opinion is the 9-mil through-and-through is the more dangerous wound, it could have hit a blood vessel or ruptured muscle tissue due to hydro-shock. That buckshot in your ass ain't goin' anywhere, doctors usually just leave it in as surgery's a danger all its own and it's harmless. It's only in the movies that removing projectiles is important, we NEVER fucking did it in the field!

Check the dead cultist for tats and that truck, if it's theirs, for anything like maps or other useful stuff (if that's not already been done). Maybe do something about the woman that got killed, damn shame.

"Ok Arani, suit yourself and I'll make sure you got the Beretta before we go in. Let's get moving. Everyone hold on! We're gonna be moving."

She slung her M16 around her shoulder, then hung on herself for when Arani put 'er in gear.

There was more that could be said but the mob was closing in and it could wait. She turned to the people they rescued. "Hey, like I said, I'm Laney. My apologies, I didn't catch your names? I was a paramedic with MedicWest. You don't seem like crazy-ass cultists. More like Las Vegas Metro or the Highway Patrol? And you of course Lady Doc,  if you please. Anyone over here wants to pitch in over there git moving before the zombies get here.

As the process of moving between the vehicles takes place Rob calls out,

"If anybody has any snuff or a smoke I'd be much obliged."

Wincing as he moves his arm he adds,

"Or weed or Oxy... I'm pretty open to the idea of drug use right now."

As they moved out to the smaller range Laney pointed out, reasonably, "for one thing the government gave us that MRAP and these guns. They also got other shit no one knows about. They sat here in trailers in Nevada and rained down God's wrath on the heathens halfway around the world. Don't think they still can't do that.

"You don't want to tell me your name. I get it, I ain't your PO or PD. We'll just keep things simple and call you "Ilsa".

"We saved your lives, Ilsa, and we're going to try and save your friends. You're using our ammo and we're still gonna risk our lives. You know what? I bet you sat around and told yourself all your life you were a "maker" and not a "taker". You'd die before you sink to that level. Now that now we're free to do what we want, you'll take help if it's offered but won't pay it back 'cause ain't no one gonna make us cover our debts anymore. Life's kinda funny, huh? Don't worry, we're not helping because the government is making us, we're doing it because you asked."

Laney thought she'd run into "Ilsa's" type before but she could be wrong. Hell, at least she didn't get called the "n-word"! That was progress of a kind. She changed out the half-empty STANAG magazine for a fresh one. "Ilsa, you think you're good with the ammo you got? We'll see if anyone can spare more. No promises."

She was staying in the truck. That was the way Laney really was: actively standing for what she believed in and sometimes a little abrasive. She wasn't unassertive or compliant, she fucking walked it like she talked it and didn't care if anyone liked it or not. Sometimes people didn't agree with her and sometimes she cared about that, sometimes she didn't. But she walked her own path, wherever it took her.

OOC: Does "Ilsa" and her kommando have any distinctive tats or is wearing symbols that might raise any warning signs? Indications of belonging to any kind of hate or white supremacy groups?

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada: Rescue Crew

After pulling himself into the back of the truck TAB secures himself a spot near the tail gate of the truck.  His abilities with a shield and melee weapons and the fact that he is wearing military armor will allow him to be a fairly respectable rear vanguard.  It was some real weird medieval stuff they were about to do.  The choreographed moves that he had practiced for hundreds of hours, the endless nights of research into historical warfare was about to potentially become relevant.  He made sure that his bayonet was accessible, as his machete and shield would be his weapons of choice first off.  If he lost his machete his bayonet would be second and then axe from the shoot out would be third. He regretted not putting more work into melee training with an axe it would have to be something he considered strongly, it seemed that these walking dead were not prone to weapon use which gave those who still lived a small advantage.  All the while TAB was prepping himself he wondered how well a Spartan Phalanx or Roman shield wall with spears would work against these undead, it would have to be well trained group of men and some select women who could do it.  Joint would be fantastic with his phenomenal strength that TAB had witnessed when working out, but the major problem with the oaf was his lack of team work.  Well that would all get hammered out eventually in the mean time TAB turned his attention back to the mob of zombies and their sickly moan.

In reply to Eddie Thomas (msg # 100):

Laney tried to estimate how fast the mob was shambling. Depending on how fast they were travelling they might have 20-30 minutes to get sorted out at the other range.

"You bet, TAB. We gotta get turned around first, get organised.

"Arani, please take us to the other range, the one on the far side of the water tank. There's a CB radio we need to pull from a truck, Isabel should look over the wounded and the women that Ace and the others rescued there.

"Plus, I see a side road that leads up to the main range where the other folks are trapped. If it goes up to the fence we got us a bolt-cutter and we can avoid the mob altogether.

"So yeah, please, let's get to the other range, make a short stop."

She waved to the MRAP, point at them, the truck and then then pointed at the other shooting range, the one where Bobby Lee and Ace got ventilated by the cultists.

OOC: From E. Carey Ave you can see a side road leading around the water tank to the north, leading to the Moran Firearms Facility (the main range). From our vantage point can we see if it looks like it goes right to the range? (I think so!) If so that will lead us around the mob.

As well, the shoulders (and likely turnouts) seemed to be jammed with abandoned vehicles, and behind that were berms and rough ground for a couple hundred metres or so. There didn't seem to be any value to risking it.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada: Rescue Crew

Arani nodded, and recalled the map in her head. If she remembered correctly there were a couple of roads that didn't have a lot of vegetation on either side, and the car was built for offroad to begin with.

- "Got an idea. That gunfire had to have attracted the attention of the zombies around the building, what if i swing the truck around over there, leading this bunch into the desert, then circle around to the southside where the people at the range won't have line of sight? After the pickup we'd take the water tower route back. Team MRAP could take their wounded to get treated in the meantime and wait for our arrival, and with us luring the zombies out into the desert the horde would stay out of their hair for a good while too."

She pointed out the route she was thinking of on the map, avoiding hills that looked steep enough to make the truck flip over if the tires didn't hold their grip. There were a couple of fences along the way, but it wasn't anything the truck couldn't handle. Just to be on the safe side however, she avoided the fence around the water tower which was more likely to be reinforced.

- "How's that look?"

OOC: It's on the map, in red.

19:05, Today: Arani Vasingis rolled 40 -- a simple success using the Warhammer Test system with a target number of 42.  Streetwise.

"Yeah, please take the side route to the south now, then we can come back via the other range and grab that CB radio that got left in the truck. It's a change in plans, but a good one."

She raised her voice to be heard over the engine.

"Everyone, change in plans yall! We're taking the route Arani pointed out. And we're taking it now, we're not waiting until later. We can go by the other range and grab that stuff on the way back. Yall cool with this?

"Either way, yall be on the lookout for "fast movers". Most of the crazies are "slow movers" but we did see a couple a few weeks back in Vegas. Plus there was some funny movement last night but it wasn't clear what it was. I got a feeling we're gonna see things that can run and jump!

"TAB, honey, you want to borrow the bolt cutters in case something jumps up at you?"

OOC: Good thinking! This seems like a viable route and good on you for figuring it out.

I say let's take it now, and then go by the other range later. Plus, the GM was presumably hoping we'd cut to the chase and go in for the 2nd rescue sooner rather than later, this certainly does that if no one objects, eh?

The woman with the sniper rifle and her group seem pleased that they were heading back immediately for their friends.

Arani guns the engine and begins to follow the MRAP at a slow speed so as to allow the Zombie horde to follow....

She then turns to the left and drives down into a dry creek bed before reaching a dirt road that seems to have been traveled by ATV's. She speeds up at this point, leaving the Zombie horde behind to wander aimlessly in the desert. The dirt road leads to a fence line which Arani follows and stops where she wants to turn but is blocked by the fence.

OOC: To me that looks like a chain link fence. So you guys need to either go around it, try to drive through it, or figure some other way to get it out of the way.

Laney was in the truck cab, sitting between the driver, Arani, and Annabelle's legs as she stood out the passenger roof hatch.

As they drove, Laney checked her gear and weapons. She also checked that her rifle was on Safe, popped out the half-empty magazine and put it into an ammo pouch. She then pulled out and inserted a fresh one into her M16A2. As well, made sure her bolt-cutters and medical kit were secure. Laney saw with satisfaction that the mob had continued to try and follow them offroad and, having lost sight of them in the draw, would probably wander around the desert a while. This was certainly better than her own idea of driving back through them up East Carey! They still had about half the mob to deal with but that was much better odds.

"Good goin', Arani. Nice work," Laney said, appreciatively.

"Everyone! Check yall's guns, put in a fresh clip* if you need to."

When they reached the fenceline Laney studied it. It looked like chain-link topped with triple strands of razor-wire. She pulled out the bolt-cutters. "All right. Yall are lucky I brought my "All-Access Pass". Now, yall cover TAB and me while we take care of business."

Once the truck was stopped near the fence she left the rifle on the cab floor where she could reach in and grab it. Hopping down, she started working on the fence, cutting an opening.

Arani grinned appreciatively when Laney complimented both her thinking and her driving. Even if they were to take the same route back to base, the zombies would be far too scattered to be able to block the road.

- "Right people, let's keep this as quiet as possible. Thanks to those suckers shooting at our buddies, it should have drawn in the zombies surrounding the building, so if we manage to stay quiet the south side should be clear and we'll have a nice and easy pickup as neither the zombies nor the cultists will have line of sight. After that we circle around the water tower, and whatever horde will be behind us can get stuck on that fence and fan out like that other group eating sand right now."

She looked around, trying to keep an eye out for zombies. A few stragglers they would be able to deal with in close quarters, guns would essentially ruin the plan but she wasn't about to have the others get chomped on for the sake of keeping things quiet. If that happened, they would just have to improvise, and hope that whatever zombies would be attracted by the sound would not veer far enough to the south to get in the truck's way.

The look on his face is one of worry and that haste is what is needed.  TAB uses his hands to signal that they should look in the direction that he will point and indicating the number.  Even going so far as to somehow imitate the mass of the three fat ones.  It will surely more look like he is playing the part of a gorilla.

Arani blinked for a moment at the news. The fact that they were now about to face some kind of mutated zombies -- as if the regular Hordes weren't bad enough -- was worrying enough as it was, but if there was a way to control these things then they just ran into a primary objective to send to Alaska.

All she really had time to do was cut the strands of wire at the top, making sure they were completely severed and rolled back. Those would be bad news if they wrapped around an axle or got stuck on the truck. She'd just have to trust the 5-ton could bulldoze the fence to get through it.

"Ok! Let's go!" She sprinted for the cab to climb in and get her rifle.

Arani sighed when she heard Annabelle open fire.

- "Well, i guess that answers my question..."

Seeing Laney climb in, she turned to her for a moment, before shifting the truck in reverse, either to turn and take off or to get some extra distance to help build momentum for bashing the fences.

- "So, seeing as, despite my warnings, we just seem to have opened fire on a massive group of like four zombies, i take it the silent approach got axed, right? Still doable or should we circle around again while the zombies are attracted to all the sound we just made instead of the people shooting at us?"

She wasn't exactly pleased with the way things had gone, but didn't consider this the time and place for an argument. That would come later.

With Laney finishing up her fence cutting and high tailing it back to the truck. TAB will follow suit, retreating while facing the opponent, with occasional looks to his side and to the rear.  The sound of high velocity rounds and the crack of someones carbine is some what frustrating to TAB has the ability to hear the approaching enemies is that much harder.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada: Rescue Crew

Annabelle and Eddie start firing on the Zombies.....

Annabelle blows off the head of the pointing Zombie and while Eddie hits one of the large fat Zombies in the head it is only a glancing blow. The two large fat Zombies then begin to run at the truck, and despite being large and fat they seem to be a bit faster then the most common Zombies..... They also begin to moan....

Annabelle fires a second time and her shot hits one of the fat Zombies (not the one Eddie had previously hit in the head) in the body, but the bullet strike doesn't seem to slow it down. She fires a second time and the fat zombie moves ot of the way at the last split second.

Eddie takes a second shot at the fast Zombie he just hit and is satisfied to see the head explode into a brown mist of decaying brains. Eddie's third shot misses the second fat Zombie as well.

Laney climbs into the cab of the truck and closes the door.

TAB is still a few feet from the trucks driver side....the fat zombie isn't that far away, less then  and if TAB really wanted to he could charge and attack the Zombie with his weapons.

The gunfire manages to attract other zombies nearby. Nine more Zombie become visible, coming from the east and approaching the rear of the truck. While they are not close it won't take any more then 30 seconds to reach the truck.

OOC: Game map is updated with rough location/direction the Zombies are coming from. Please follow the init order. The people who rolled higher get to react to those who rolled lower (yes I rolled for everyone) so lower people are 'forced' to post first.

[Private to Tiberus Asimov Blackiron: It will take you 1 action at a full run to reach the fat Zombie, or one action to climb up the side of the truck and a second action to be safely inside the cargo bed. Please make a climbing roll (-10% due to your armor/gear) if you decide to climb up the side of the truck. The roll won't matter unless the truck moves. If it moves your roll will matter. If you fail the climbing roll, make a second roll. Passing the second roll will allow you to hang off the side of the truck, failing means falling off the side of the truck.]

[Private to Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael: It will take you one action to poke your body half in/out of the can so you can shoot at the Zombies coming from the rear (this would be considered 'some other awkward position' and -5 to strike, no bonuses). You don't have a clear shot at the fat zombie (well unless you decide to shoot past Annabelle's legs and Arani's head with a missed strike roll hitting one of the two women). It will take two actions if you decide to get out of the truck completely.]

Laney understood Arani's frustration but was still satisfied to see the "smart" crazy go down. The presence of a seeming "intelligent" crazy, able to communicate, was very worrisome and made a stealth approach useless. Taking it down was worth the noise (to her) and there it was.

The remaining fat zombie chugging towards them was on the driver's side so there was no way to shoot at him without putting the rifle muzzle near past Arani's head. A no-go. And the cluster of 9 were behind them, also not easy to engage from her position.

"Nice shootin', Annabelle! Sorry about the noise but it was absolutely worth it, hadda pop a cap in that "thinker" no matter what.

"Cutting through the fence will take about 5 minutes each. I think that's out. Arani, whaddaya say let's back up and come around via East Carey from the east.

"No ma'am, no Seven Six Two! I got a fresh mag of Five Five Six, yall! And I want them empties back, hear?"
She handed one of her 3 spare magazines back for the guy who was out. She had a fresh one in her rifle, another full one and a half-full one in her ammo pouches. She then unrolled her window to make it easier to shoot.

Once Arani was sure that everyone was back in (or on) the truck, she put it in reverse and did a turn while backing up so she would be able to head back in the direction she had come from. Hopefully, with the truck facing the direction the fat zombies were in she would be able to get a good look at them and see whether she could slip past in between the fat zombies and the group of regular ones in order to move along the south fence back to East Carey, to keep from running into whatever would be left of the group they had lured into the desert on their way there.

OOC: Yeah, not trying to jinx anything, but you mentioned a smart one leading three fat zombies in post #131. The smart one and one of the fat ones died in post #142 and the second fat one got double teamed in #152. I don't mind them being gone, just figured there was one left is all, hence the question.

With the fat zombies in front of the truck being dead again, Arani shifted gear and drove around the bodies so she didn't risk the wheels getting stuck on them. Once she was clear of them, she would continue with her alternate route to make one last pickup attempt provided there was not too much resistance there -- hopefully the shooting would have pulled any zombie groups east towards where they had been, rather than to where they would be heading.

OOC: Added the altered route to the map. I also suck at editing maps so there may be a layer or two more than we need in there.

Arani doesn't find any obstacles in driving around the gate. Well there were a few Zombies here and there, but she just ran over those that were in the way.

Meanwhile the guys in the back share the rounds from the M-16 magazine offered to them by Laney.

The gal with the sniper rifle offers her opinion to the conversation. "Yeah we can't go blasting those things all the time, we should've tried to take 'em out without guns." As Arani gets close the building the people on top can be seen waving. The nuber of Zombies surrounding the building is a little bit less then before. The gal with the sniper rifle points to the north side of the builinf where it looks like the front entrance is. "Why don't you try to pull up alongside where the side walk is?"

- "Well, i picked the southside because of those cultists holed up in the firearms facility across the street, and i didn't want them taking potshots at us while we were sitting still picking the other group up. That's the whole reason we were cutting fences to begin with."

She glanced at Laney before keeping her eyes on the road again.

In reply to Arani Vasingis (msg # 167):

Laney pointed to the massive water tower.

"Don't worry, Arani. Three things:

"1. According to Handsome and Ace, the cultists are all dead.

"2. If they weren't, there is a water tower in between us and them, if they were alive.

"3. Again, they're all dead, but if not we don't have any possible line of sight due to the curvature of the hill and the position of the other buildings. But they, again, can't shoot at us as they're all dead. In the "dead-dead" way, not walkin' around.

"So I really think we should be taking this lady's suggestion and going in on the North side."

OOC: As far as Laney understands there are no other cultists alive. But if you take a look on Google Street view you'll see there is no possible LOS between the range at the foot of the hill and the buildings of the Firearms Facility at the top as the latter are below the crest of the hill:

https://goo.gl/maps/XZZecoXhJRv

The range where the cultsts got killed is behind the berms panning to the lower left, by what appears to be a coach (bus). The John T. Moran Firearms Facility is to the upper right, behind the crest of the hill. In between, and higher, is the white water tower, which is sitting on its own hill. I think this clarifies's my PC's point.

The horde of Zombies surrounding the building is large enough that trying to slowly push through them is plausible but would give the Zombies ample opportunity to climb up the sides and back of the truck.

Again it looks like plowing through them might be the better option.

OOC: Arani if plowing through the zombies I'll need two pilot truck rolls at -15%. If you drive slowly through them it'll mean the people in the back will have to fight off zombies climbing into the cargo bed of the truck.

Once she spotted the zombies, she stopped a decent distance away, turning her head to call out at those in the truck bed.

- "Right, heads up, folks! I could try slamming into these suckers, but it's about even odds of something going wrong. Or, i could go slow and push them out of the way, but you'd be stuck fighting them off as they try to climb in like last time. Your call."

She knew she would be fairly safe even if the truck did launch itself up from the curb, but those in the truck bed did not have the luxury of seatbelts or something intended for passengers to hold onto. It was only fair that they would be the ones to decide the best course of action.

She turned to look around again, giving a tap on the back to get the attention of those in the cab.

- "Lock and load back there folks, slow it is!"

She began a slow and steady advance, trying to get two wheels on the curb before they'd reach the zombies in order to try and not mess up the aim -- or worse, balance -- of those in the cab while they'd be fighting off zombies. She did keep herself prepared to floor it in case of trouble, the zombies might be able to keep from being ran over due to a lack of momentum, but a truck could still give a pretty good shove if need be.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada: Rescue Crew

Arani begins to push the military cargo truck into/through the crowd of Zombies. The truck is soon surrounded by all sides. A few Zombies are run over, but many are attempt to climb up the front, sides and back of the truck.

Front of truck
A single Zombie begins to climbs up onto the hood of the truck......

Driver side of truck
On the driver side of the truck a pair of Zombie manage to start climbing up....

Passenger side of truck
On the passenger side of the truck a pair of Zombie manage to start climbing up....

Rear of truck
No Zombie are climbing up the back of the truck, yet.....

OOC: Please post a full melees worth of actions in one post. After that wait for my GM post before posting again.

It will take a full melee for a Zombie to climb up and into the cargo bed of the truck.

I am assuming that both of the driver and passenger side windows of the truck cab are rolled up. Just keep in mind that if you do open up and try to lean out of those windows you run the risk of getting pulled out of the truck.

If Laney was disappointed she didn't show it. She simply replied, philosophically, "You know, there's a very good reason they say "this ain't no democracy" at times like these, I just hope we don't find out why the hard way."

Arani was driving and Annabelle was standing in the passenger side roof hatch. She didn't like it that one of the crazies was crawling up on the hood but there wasn't much she could do about it if she didn't want to shoot through the front windscreen. She did put in her ear plugs to preserve her hearing in case there was gunfire in the truck cab.

"She's all yours, Annabelle," she said, pointing at the woman climbing on the hood of the 5-ton. Grabbing the radio again she upped the volume a little and transmitted,

"Handsome, Ace, anyone? Do you read me? Over.

"Handsome, Ace, any station? This is Laney at the range. Please come in.

"If you can hear me, we are going in now but we're doing it the hard way, nice and slow. We won't crash but we're gonna be fightin' all the way. So we may be running a little low on bullets, if you dig."

OOC: I am holding off for my PC's attacks until I think I have it straight: there is one zombie attacking the cab from the front. The 1 zombie on the driver side and 2 on the passenger side are climbing into the bed or the cab?

Added: Confirmed, just 1 near the cab. Thanks, GM! Instead of posting a back-and-forth conversation over a minute's time I will post in the radio thread and edit this post as we go along.

As the truck continues to move forward, people in the back of te truck dow what they can to keep the Zombies from climbing up into the bad of the truck.

Eddie blows off the head of the Zombie climbing up the front of the truck. He then fires on the two Zombies climbing up the driver side and blows their heads off too.

Annabelle focuses on the Zombies climbing up the passenger side, and blows their heads off too.
[Private to Annabelle Wright: You only fired two bullets, so don't mark off the ammo from actions 3 & 4.]

Arani doesn't see a need to put the truck into reverse just yet, but realizes at the speed she is going (the speedometer barley reads anything) it'll take a minute or two to reach the side of the building.

A total of four more Zombies mange to climb up the sides and front of the truck.

Front of truck
No Zombies climb up onto the hood of the truck......

Cab, Driver side
No Zombies manage to climb up to reach the driver side window

Cab, Passenger side
No Zombies manage to climb up to reach the passenger side window

Driver side of cargo bed
On the driver side of the truck a single Zombie manages to start climbing up....

Passenger side of cargo bed

Eddie takes two well aimed shots and drops two of the Zombies climbing up along the driver side of the truck bed. He intends to fire a third shot but holds his fire as the other people in the back begin to use the butt stocks of their weapons to deal with the Zombies.

Arani finally pulls the truck along side the building so the people on the roof to be rescued can jump down into the bed of the truck. As the truck stops the horde of Zombies surrounding the truck pushes up against the front, back, and driver side.

The pushing of the Zombie horde makes it harder for those trying to climb up the side of the truck to do so, thus there are easily dealt with by gal with the sniper rifle and her people.

Before the people on the roof start to jump down they drop four duffle bags of various shapes/sizes. The clunking sound the bags make is a pretty good sign the bags are filled with weapons.

Five people then drop down off the roof into the back of the truck. They too are similarly armed as the people previously rescued. With a total of twelve people in the back f the truck it's cramped, but the side and back are well covered by people to prevent any Zombies climbing up.

Once the people in the back of the truck are settled in Arani wastes no time in appling the gas and pushing/running over any Zombies blocking the front of the truck.

OOC: If you want to use a bullet to shoot some Zombie feel free to post doing so, just don't forget to mark off the ammo used.

Despite the clear necessity, Arani did take care to accellerate slowly and be careful when driving off the sidewalk, as she could tell even without looking around that the bed of the truck would be pretty cramped judging by the amount of impacts she had heard behind her. It would be a shame for anyone to fall off at this point, so she just needed to push down the urge to floor it one more time before they'd be able to clear this horde and get underway back to base via the agreed upon route past the water tower. Hopefully the ones shambling after them would be too busy getting stuck on the fence to follow them around the obstacle.
