ROUND 4
Kahan rushes to the earthrocs to gather their reins.  He notices when he does this that the saddles and saddleblankets that were over the earthrocs have been stacked in a pile near the rocks.  Obviously, they did not want to give you a way to get a quick escape.

While Kahan is doing this, Borimer drops his sword and grabs his bow.  Adaran is also switching to his bow.

The demons fire their spikes.  Borimer is hit.  (4 hp dmg.)  The other flying demon switches its aim to Kahan once the dwarf he has been attacking goes into seizures.  Kahan is hit by flying spikes.  (6 hp dmg.)

One soulfeeder attacks the remaining dwarf, hitting it with both its attacks -- claws and bite.  (10 hp dmg.)  The dwarf's hair appears to be turning white with the drain of experience.

The other soulfeeder attacks Grung.  Both attacks miss.

Adaran fires at the flying demons.  His arrow finds its mark.  (10 dmg.)

Borimer also fires at the flying demon but misses.

Grung swings his axe but misses the soulfeeder.

Grizz grabs his trident and stabs upward, hitting the soulfeeder.  The soulfeeder squeals like a stuck pig and then its body shudders and dissolves into a wisp of smoke.

The remaining dwarf attacks the other soulfeeder but misses.

Kahan is leading the earthrocs away from the battle toward the southwest.

"Grizz, Grung!" shouts Adaran as he nocks another enchanted sheaf arrow and takes aim at the winged demon attacking Borimer, "Let the dwarf handle the leech, we need to take down these flyers!" Letting his arrow fly at the demon, he quickly draws another sheaf arrow and fires again.

Grung leaves the soulfeeder and dwarf to battle each other and moves to take the fallen dwarf's crossbow.

OOC:  I'll take the crossbow but will put away my axe first.

The second demon swoops low and flies back toward the forest.  You remember what happened the last time the flying demons left you.

Keep in mind that demons and undead are not subject to critical hits.

Borimer hits the fleeing demon with one shot.  (11 dmg.)  (The second shot, although it hits AC 1, actually missed because there is a -2 penalty because it is now a moving target.)

"Kahan, get the earthrocs ready!" calls Adaran as he sees the winged demon speed away, knowing they have little chance of shooting it down before it escapes their range. Stashing his bow, he darts over to the spot where the other winged demon's ashes fell and quickly collects the scattered arrows, sliding them into his quiver.

Grizz and the dwarf finish off the last soulfeeder, which disappears with a screech and a puff of smoke and sulfur.

Grung fires a bolt, but the non-magical bolt has no effect against the flying demon.

Kahan goes to Prump and casts a spell.

Adaran is getting the harnesses back onto the remaining earthrocs.

Prump begins to gasp in air and look around in a daze and exhaustion.

The dwarf says, "Tarimar claims you are orc-friends and that you bear their medallions."

Re: Temple of Ashmere 33 - Demon's Wrath

The dwarf says, "I had hoped joining Tarimar would be a rise in fortune to help my family, but many have treated Tarimar's group like its own clan, one free of morality and one where only the lineage of orcdom matters to count one an enemy."

As he talks, he sees you prepping the earthrocs, and you see him do a mental calculation.

"When Maellarean told us to hurt a fellow dwarf and leave him to bait you out, I could not do anything but follow.  But he was wrong, and many of Tarimar's most trusted men are likewise wrong."

Prump rises to his knees, slowly gaining his strength.

"I will make it up to you," he says to Prump, then to everyone.  "To all of you."  He takes the axe and warhammer, one in each hand, and climbs to the top of the rocks.  "If I can hold off the demons long enough for your escape, perhaps I will be redeemed."

He stands perched atop the rocks watching.

Meanwhile, you all manage to get the earthrocs ready and Prump gets some strength back in his body.

Then the dwarf says, "They come!"

You remember it is about a 1 minute walk from the edge of the trees to the rocks.  You throw your things over the earthrocs just to the east of the rocks and look back.

Through the trees steps the soulsorrow demon, along with its clawed companion that had been so fast and quick.

Above you come about 20 more winged demons.  One of them holds in its talons a familiar looking death knight, a long blade in its hands.  It points a bony finger towards you.

Meanwhile, the whole sky has been blotted out by a cloudcover of ash and sulfurous smoke rising from the volcano.  You will have to fly less than 200 feet above the water to remain safe, and even then, falling ash and rock could hit you.

The flying demons squeal and head in your direction.  They are about 30 seconds away, and the larger demons are about 1 minute away.  The lesser Soulfeeder demons are also converging from the woods and trees, creating a mob of demons.

Re: Temple of Ashmere 33 - Demon's Wrath

Kahan makes a quick gesture with his hands in front of the unnamed dwarf, patting him on the shoulder. "The gods will remember your sacrifice, brave friend. I will make sure of it." he assures him, before hopping on his earthroc, hoping to get a seat with either Borimer or Grung so he can feel at least a little safer. He also makes sure to cast his last two (three? I'm not sure anymore) Cure Light Wounds equally between whoever seems most damaged.

Likely Borimer twice and Grung once, if I have three. If two, then one each.

Re: Temple of Ashmere 33 - Demon's Wrath

Borimer and Kahan get on one earthroc.  (Earthroc 1.)

Grung and Adaran get on another earthroc.  (Earthroc 2.)

Grizz and Prump get on the third earthroc.  (Earthroc 3.)

The demons are converging on you even as you take off.

The dwarf screams a warcry and jumps from the rocks taunting the demons.  This distracts the flying demons.  Then the soulseeker reaches the dwarf and, with a swipe of his hand, knocks the dwarf flying into the trees of the forest.  His screams cease almost immediately as soulfeeders surround him.

As you look back, the soulseeker is looking up at you, his clawed sidekick next to him.

There is a shudder around you, and the volcano explodes again.  This time, you see fire and lava and black ash flying stronger than ever into the air.

The flying demons settle and land near the demons.  Then the soulseeker and its companion walk off the beach and into the ocean, sinking yet still walking after the waves cover them.  They are walking in your direction.

The death knight also watches from the shore before stepping into the ocean and walking toward you as he sinks.

The volcano sinks into the distance as you fly.  Soon, you cannot see the island, but can still see the black cloud of ash spreading to blot out the sky.

There is no further incident, and Prump takes you safely to the dwarven compound.  You land, exhausted and weary.  You are greeted and told discussions will be held in the morning after you are rested and healed.

Dwarven clerics surround you and tend to your wounds.  You are all healed to your normal strength and sent off to bed to rest until the morning.

THIS ENDS THE ADVENTURE.

It will be followed up by your discussions with the dwarves and the battle with the orcs.

You are also introduced to Arthur Glade, who shows you to your rooms.

XP to be given out soon.

There will be a total of three new people joining the group.

I was going to have an aerial combat and chase with the earthrocs and flying demons.  After getting the rules and prepping them and the scenario, I dropped it.  Too complicated and too little bang for the buck as far as being fun.  Time to move forward...

Borimer slips away after being tended to by the priests. He eats a large meal and then enjoys a pipe while watching the sky and thinking of the Demons now on the loose.  The warrior attempts a smoke ring, but produces an amorphous cloud of smoke instead.  He only smiles and continues watching the sky.
