OOC: I was more looking for a magic item shop, but if there are none, then I suppose I shall have to do without.

Kahan browses over the wares from the Gypsies, wishing they had updated their gear from the last time the had been there. "So, tell me about yourself, Nimith. What brought you here exactly?" he inquires curiously.

" A bit of gambling could be fun, I think." He shrugged, he felt he might be butting in on their entertainment, but thought he'd put his two cents in anyway.

Re: The Orc Invasion - Part 1

If you choose different groups, I will separate you into different group postings, as I have done previously.  That will work just fine, given the size of this group.

The three options are:

Nimith - Currently, Kahan and Adaran are following him

Polyanthar (the gambling gangster) -  Naj

Anlisade (private adventurer) -

Arthur looks over to Flint and says, “I am not so sure about your statement.  So fare you are the only person who has vocally acknowledge me in the group.  Not that I do not appreciate it.”

Then  Borimer seems to want some company so Arthur says, “Would you mind if I tag along.  I am not much for integration but I do like to strike up a conversation or two.”

Re: The Orc Invasion - Part 1

Heath:
"I have also had suspicions that there is a traitor among us.  Word of this 'Tarimar' is common in the southlands, where I have just been engaged in battle with the orcs for many months.  Some dwarves even have some interest in Tarimar's cause because we all share the same passion of getting the orcs out our lands.  They are a parasite and a cancer."

He leans his cane against the table and pulls out a folded parchment.  "I have taken some notes about people I believe may be in league with Tarimar and hiding among us.  This Nimith gnome is one of them.  At first, I was looking for the tattoo on the arm.  Then I heard that some of his followers get tattoos on their backs instead.  And there may be other ways to tell.  I have three potential suspects:"

He looks over the parchment and then looks up and says:

"Nimith, of course.  I have never seen his back, and he seems to know too much about Tarimar.  He also speaks lightly, even joking, about Tarimar.  He may have the tattoo, or he may have some other item of significance from Tarimar to signify their allegiance.  At certain times, he also has a very convenient failure in his memory.  Just ask him about where he lived or what he did six months ago and you will see.

The next is Polyanthar.  He is a dwarf gambling lord, or so they call him.  No principals, he'd sell his mother for one orc Drakma.  He has the tendrils of his intelligence everwhere, trying to get secrets.  He may be one of Tarimar's men, or he may not have joined him but instead sold information to Tarimar for a price.  I heard tell that he has a newly acquired ruby brooch in a scarab shape.  He told those who enquired that he got it from me, which he certainly did not.  He is suspicious, but he has his retainers and bodyguards too, so be careful.

The last is Anlisade.  He went on an excursion for about six months time and returned with a chest of spoils.  He will not tell anyone where he went or how he got it, and he no longer goes to the public bathhouses, so his arms and back are never exposed.  I believe he may have visited Tarimar, and rumor has it that Tarimar gave him a necklace with certain magical properties, something that Tarimar values.  Anlisade is a powerful dwarf with more sons than I have fingers, and they will stand with him as powerful adversaries, so be careful.

I fear if Tarimar's man is among these, he may do something soon to bring Tarimar to us.  If you can find and stop him, I will do my best to get Krugoth to give you much more of the treasure than he already has.  He will be grateful, I am sure."

He folds the parchment back up, offers to tell you where Anlisade and Polyanthar are at, and waits to see if you have any questions.

As Pamaran relates his suspicions, Adaran listens with interest, but also studies the dwarf's face intently. When Pamaran finishes, he nods and replies quietly, "I have the same suspicions about Nimith. He's definitely hiding something, and seems considerably nervous about staying out of this conference hall for too long. If I had to guess, I'd say he might be a paid informant. He has all the typical signs of a rat - nervousness, dodgy answers, paranoia about being interrogated. What do you know about his background?"

Re: The Orc Invasion - Part 1

(Observation Results:) As Adaran questions Pamaran, he notices that Pamaran seems the quintessential warrior.  He is hard, calloused, and clearly against the orcs.  Every time he speaks of the orc hordes he scratches at the bandages on his head or arm, or he will ball his hand into a fist.  When he speaks of Polyanthar, Nimith, or Anlisade, his stern voice is sincere in a distrust or dislike for them that is not feigned.

"Nimith is a gnome," he says in response to Adaran's question.  "Like most gnomes, he is squeamish, enigmatic, and takes to himself rather than joining the clan thoughts.  He has not been here long, but many around here are suspicious of him.  He is a mage, after all, and dwarves are none too fond of mages.  He throws around his relationship to the famous gnome brothers with too much ease.  It would be unwise for us to trust him too far."

Re: The Orc Invasion - Part 1

Adaran nods in agreement to the dwarven Captain. "One thing puzzles me." he says contemplatively. "If Tarimar's 'cause' is just to get rid of the orcs, why doesn't he align with Krugoth's forces instead of gathering his own clan of renegade dwarves, planting spies in the compound, and killing anyone who doesn't serve him?"

Re: The Orc Invasion - Part 1

Pamaran shrugs.  "How would I know?  From what I've heard of Tarimar, what he wants is to replace the orc government with one under his own rule, one without a king but with order and might.  I don't know that he kills everyone who won't serve him, but I don't think he's lenient on those who fraternize with the enemy orcs.  Few men are simple enough to have only one 'cause,' as you put it.  No doubt, he is a complicated man."

He looks up as food is brought in.  "Never go to battle on an empty stomach," he says, offering Adaran a place at the table with him.  "A man's last meal will taste better than the feasts of kings, as we like to say around here."

Re: The Orc Invasion - Part 1

"His men killed Kahzir and Prump," Adaran replies coolly, "and murdered a whole team of dwarves sent to map the tunnels beneath the Eye of the World. Whatever his causes are, it's not only orcs and their associates who he kills. His hired mage made it clear that they'll slay anyone who's 'not part of his plans', as he put it - orcs or not. Even loyal dwarves like Prump." As he speaks, he studies Pamaran's reactions sharply, paying close attention to whether the Captain seems dismissive of Tarimar's treachery, or appropriately angered by it.

Re: The Orc Invasion - Part 1

He shakes his head and scratches at his wounds absently, frowning.  "Sad business, that.  They say the great dwarven king Lashlikahn murdered men, women and children before creating one of the strongest clans of the North.  History is written by the victors, as they say."

He smiles before changing the subject.  "Perhaps Prump will be grateful to you and fight with you in the battle tomorrow," Pamaran says.  "You could use every extra set of hands you can get, especially someone skillful at riding the earthrocs."

Pamaran does not appear to like Adaran's tone and seems very conscious of the fact that Adaran has not sat down to eat with him or talk to him with any charm.  (Charisma check failed.)

Adaran looks at Pamaran thoughtfully for a moment before nodding and responding, "I'd love to relax and eat, but if there's a traitor somewhere in the compound, I'd prefer to find him now, rather than later." He leans closer and says quietly, "Where has Nimith been staying? If he's a spy, I might be able to find something incriminating in his room."

Pamaran raises an eyebrow, obviously disapproving of the method.  (Charisma check failed.)  "Sneaking into people's places through burglary?  Even a traitor deserves better treatment.  Nevertheless, if you must..."  He gives Adaran the location of the room.

It is near where your own rooms are, where all the non-dwarves are sent to stay while visiting.

"On the contrary," replies Adaran, "the only thing a traitor deserves is execution." Inclining his head respectfully to the Captain, he turns and leaves the conference hall.
