Harkahnon Ruins 4 - Levels

You look in at the room marked 20a.

Here is the currently revealed map of areas you have explored:

A 10-foot-diameter hole, ornately edged, gapes in the floor of this room.  Directly above it is a similarly sized hole in the ceiling. A small pedestal sits
against the southwest wall, a diagram barely discernable above it.  There are three small bowls on the pedestal.  The bowls are empty.

The hole in the floor and ceiling appear to lead down to an identical room below and above, and those rooms to identical rooms below and above, ad infinitum.  It is like looking into the infinity of two mirrors facing each other.

After tying the 50' length of silk rope to the grappling hook, he started lowering it into the hole, careful to watch the hook instead of looking for anything down the hole. If there wasn't anything down there, he'd pull the rope back up and use it as a torch while he went to open the door into the western room.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 4 - Levels

As the rope descends, an odd thing happens.  You see the bottom of the rope dip down 15 feet, then 30 feet, and looking up, you see the same rope dropping down toward you.  This appears to be an endless loop of holes in three floors, each floor being 15 feet.

In other words, after about 45 feet of dropping the rope, the top of the rope is dangling in front of your face.

Taking a minute to look more closely, you see that the only difference between the rooms is the placement of the southern door on one of the rooms and the color of the ring around the hole.  Yours is black, the one below you is red, and the one below that is white.  Looking up, it appears that the one above you is white, and the one above that is red.

Below is a diagram.  They are supposed to be all the same size, so ignore my error.  You are at 20a; you can reference the others by 20b and 20c or by color of the ring.

Grizz tries the door to the west.  It is unlocked.

The west door opens, revealing a large kitchen.  (Room 14.)

A massive, dust-covered preparation table stands against the south wall. A large fireplace is located on the western end of the north wall. Next to it, a door leads west and another door leads north. The room appears to be empty, although it has signs of recent use.

Kahan scratches his head at the odd hole beneath him (or would it be considered above him?), looking up at where the hook was hanging before pulling it back up. "This is very odd magic. Syrissa, what is the point of this place? Do you have any idea?" the young priest asks, pulling out a gold piece and dropping it into the hole, wondering if it will fall infinitely and eventually achieve terminal velocity.

"Syrissa, would you feel comfortable staying back here with Edmure while we scout ahead? I have a feeling Esylia will come back, and I do not think there is any other way for her to get back to this level other than through these holes. Edmure would likely be very handy in finding Esylia, as long as he keeps his eyes closed and simply listens for her to return." Kahan asks, waiting for her answer before continuing forward with Borimer. "Which door would you prefer to go through first? I have no preference and would likely decide randomly if you don't care." he mentions with a shrug, looking between the two doors.

The door to the west leads into a 20' x 15' room (area 13).  A round table
sits in the center of the area, the top warped and leaning to one side. Doors to the east lead to the kitchen (area 14).  There is a door to the west, and to the north, an arched opening leads to the base of a circular staircase winding its way up.

Otherwise, the room itself is empty.

Grizz looks at the table.  On the underside, someone has carved crude numbers in the wood with a knife or dagger that read:

"486267825798"

Underneath that is scratched the word:  "DEAD"

The door to the west is unlocked.  There is no sound beyond it.

Harak listens at the stairs and hears something.  It makes a soft "plink, plink, plink" of some ball or round item that is rolling down the stairs, hitting one stair, and then the next as it starts to pick up momentum and come down toward the room where you are at.

Current Status:

Borimer is inspecting (listening and smelling) the door just north of #9.  Nearby are Harak, Flint, Kahan, and Grizz.  Naj is in room 13.

Your friendly medusa guide Syrissa is back in the room with the infinite teleportal with her blind husband Edmure.  The doors leading back there are all open so you can hear if anything is going on.

Her evil sister gorgon Esylia (who is twisted and serpentine) is somewhere on the level above you and has been lobbing grenade-like objects down the stairs and the teleportal level.

Room 12 has two broken beds.

The room north of room 12 has a sewage smell and strange but faint sloshy sounds coming from it.

You have two vials of fluid that will turn stone to flesh...just in case.  Presents from Syrissa.

You found a strange device in Room 33a that is a pulley/winch system connected to two numbers on the wall set to "35".  Pulling the winch will change the numbers.

You found a Crystal Focus Room in room 32a with an odometer like object with 12 numbers:  742138703546

You found a code of 12 numbers scratched into the bottom of a table: 486267825798.  Underneath that was scratched the word:  "DEAD"

OOC: FYI, I originally thought of making this a "Dung Elemental," but I thought that might be too cheesy, so it is a modified type of Ooze from a monster manual with a couple of special attacks I took from a couple of oozes there.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 4 - Levels

Grizz uses some fishing wire and hooks to get the dismembered hand up to the surface.  Clutched in the hand is a small note.

You can't help but notice that this hand is not all that decayed.  Its owner must have died within the last two weeks or so.

You pull out the note and open it up.  Unlike the hand, the cloth note is decaying and the writing on it very old.  After a few moments, you are able to decipher it.  The writing says:

528373567447
DEMONS

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 4 - Levels

DM Heath:

To Harak: The status hasn't changed much since I posted the above, except that you fought the ooze monster in room 9 and found a new note with a new code and the word "DEMONS" on it.  You also found a partial code of some kind scratched into the wood of one of the destroyed beds in room 12.

Character positions are pretty much the same.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 4 - Levels

The south door reveals a 15 foot by 20 foot room.  (Room 7.)

This was apparently a bunk room or barracks of some sort, with several sets of bunks.  However, the bunks have been destroyed, as if in a battle or ransacking.

All around the floor, you see familiar pieces of statues that have been blown to bits, more work of Esylia making sure the victims of her gaze never see the light of day again.  The bunks also show signs of being hit by explosions from her strange grenade-like balls.

What is different here is that the pieces of the statues seem to have been arranged in a strange pattern of concentric circles.  In the center is the remains of a stone hand, open-palmed.  In that palm is resting a cloth note similar to the one you found in the privy.  It is folded so you cannot see the writing on it.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 4 - Levels

With Harak, Kahan and Grizz right behind him, Borimer opens the door in the southwest.

He is immediately met with a cry of "No, you monster!  Leave me be!"  This is followed by a muttering and a flash of light.

This flash of light is a lightning bolt directed at the door.  The man who has just cast this spell from some sort of wand has his head turned away to make sure he doesn't look at you.  But you have little time to reflect on that since you are busily trying to dodge a lightning bolt.

OOC: Surprisingly, not a single one of you made the saving throw, which actually makes sense, since you were blindsided by it.

Borimer is hit by the lightning for 23 hit points damage.
Harak is hit by the lightning for 22 hit points damage.
Grizz is hit by the lightning for 28 hit points damage.
Kahan is hit by the lightning for 17 hit points damage.

The lightning bolt bounces off the far wall, hits one of the broken bunks, and stops.

The man, meanwhile, is diving under the bed in the room.

You see that the room is some sort of bedroom with a bed and a desk.  (Room 8.)

He comes out and sits on the bed.  You can see that he is emaciated, his clothes in tatters, and that his lips are parched and chapped.  He also looks to have been hurt badly in a recent battle or something.  "She killed them all," he says, obviously a little wild-eyed and crazy from whatever ordeal he's been through.  "There's only me...and maybe Shamir...but I don't think so."

OOC: That's right.  With Adaran gone, I'm going to have to start keeping track of that again if you guys aren't doing so!

As the man sees Kahan administering to his friends, he pulls himself out from under the bed and takes a seat.  He is frail, and is shaking with tremors.  He will take what healing he can get, and he begins to talk, telling you the following:

"My name is Chrisman.  I brought ten warriors with me and went through the Crossroads Ark about...I lost track of time in here...but it must have been at least 10 days ago.  I've only had a little water since then.

That snake-woman beast set upon us soon after we arrived, turning my men into stone and blowing them to bits.  I fled, hiding from her.  A couple others did too, but she got them eventually.  I wound up here, where I've been for many days now.

"We know some of what happened.  There is a man here who lived in this temple -- Androlus.  When the evil snake woman arrived and he saw what she was doing to those who lived in the temple, he put out his own eyes to avoid turning into stone.  She has kept him locked up ever since, trying to cull information from him.  We don't know how long he has been her prisoner, but it has likely been many years.  We were going to release him when she found us and set upon us.  That's where the last of my men made their stand.

"So here is what we learned from Androlus.  The spherical device is only one part of the Crossroads Ark.  It is the part that controls time.  When we came through, we did not go anywhere except through time.  Backwards in time, because we saw parts of the temple that were broken are now intact.  We think we have been sent back a thousand years.  Anyone you knew will not be born for many centuries to come.

"The next part of the Crossroads Ark will send you through space.  There are many locations it could send you, from the deepest areas of hell to Allevia.  But the proper code must be input into the six gears.  This snake woman is searching for codes.  I set up a trap outside this door to catch the snake woman.  Androlus told us where to find a code, but a portion of it was missing.

"You need to talk to Androlus.  He can get us out of here if you save him.  He knows all about this place."

Chrisman then says, "Where is Lumen?  We need to report back.  Is the king still well and held to the throne by Lumen's spell?"

As to the spheres, he shrugs.  "She seems to have an unlimited supply.  I think she keeps them upstairs somewhere."

"The snake woman kept him locked in a closet area inside a square room.  It was a secret door that we stumbled upon because Androlus heard us and called out for help."

OOC:  If you choose to have Androlus help you, he will move slowly and may need someone to support his weight much of the time.  Even with healing, he is dehydrated and starving.  This will not heal with a simple spell but will heal over time as he gets food and water.  He also walks with a limp that slows him down.

Chrisman:  Chrisman is a scholar and has some training in magical arts.  His spellbook was lost somewhere when he was fleeing, and he just used his last lightning charge on the wand, so he is of little practical help there.

OPTIONAL OBJECTIVE:  Keep Chrisman alive to lead you to Androlus.

"Does that note have a clue on it, or did you put it there knowing Esylia would think it was a clue?" Kahan asks, having wondered what the note was but not wanting to touch it when he heard there was a trap involved. While he is waiting on an answer, he will cast another healing spell on Borimer and Grizz. Once everyone is settled in to rest, he will also cast a spell on the door, telling everyone that if they wish to open it, they must first speak a command word or be blasted by fire. "Borimer, why don't you and I go find Syrissa and tell her we will be resting? Perhaps she would like to take a break as well." he asks before heading out of the room.

Casting Cure Serious Wounds on Borimer (which should bring him back to full if I'm not mistaken), then Cure Light Wounds on Grizz, before casting Fire Trap on the door (the command word is earthroc if it matters). Can we have that recap on HP now? I'll make sure to keep track of my own once I'm sure what it's at. Also before resting Kahan will do a healing check on anyone that hasn't already been healed.

He says, "It had a number on it.  I set it there a day or two ago, and I've forgotten what the number is now."

"Good idea."

Bormer thanks the priest for the healing and then goes with him to speak with Syrissa.

"We should stay here were he has been safe for over a week," Harak suggests.

He is down to 32/54 hp.   He can heal 12 hp on himself after doing the ceremony, but that would wipe him out as far as doing anything else for a while (other than fight).  He could use some healing that didn't cost so much, if there's any left.  He can watch all night.

Borimer nods before leaving to speak to Syrissa.

"Yes, I definitely agree, the spell will do us good. And the priest's."

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 4 - Levels

As you are discussing whether to rest to regain your faculties and strength, you hear a shout from back in the teleportal room.  Then you hear a scream.

As you run over there to investigate, you hear another of those explosions.

In the teleportal room itself, you see rubble flying down between the teleportal area, working its way up to terminal velocity as it falls nonstop.  Some of the rubble is also on the ground next to you.

Looking around, you see that it is the remains of Syrissa.

Naj is also standing there, as well as Edmure, and they relate what they saw (or heard):

Syrissa was yelling up a level at her sister, Esylia. Then Syrissa jumped into the teleportal, trying get across to Esylia.  But Esylia's gaze was stronger than Syrissa's, and Syrissa was turned to stone.  Her sister then lobbed the grenade-like objects at her, and the explosion blew up Syrissa's falling statue-ified body.

By the time Naj got there, he saw the remains of a large, serpentine tail exiting the door two levels below you...and one level above you.

"Now," Edmure says, "everyone Syrissa turned to stone has been revived."  Then the blind old man stops short, still in shock at his wife's death.

"Including the lich king. Fantastic." Kahan mutters under his breath, heaving a sigh and furrowing his brow in frustration. "And technically, it's everyone she will turn to stone, because we are currently 1000 years in the past. Semantics aside, we were planning on taking a rest before... this all happened. Would you care to join us?" he asks the older man, offering to lead him back to the bedroom area if he said yes.

Still struck by his sudden loss, Edmure agrees to follow you back to rest.

OOC: Since Edmure is blind (and therefore impervious to the gaze), and now enraged at Esylia, he will help you in any way he can.  You might find a use for his imperviousness.

Borimer resumes watching over the others while they rest, Chianta's hilt never far from his hand.
