Harkahnon Ruins 7 - The King

OOC: I treated this as a wandering monster situation.  On my first roll, you got the encounter...

You get back to room 8 and begin preparing for a rest.  But you hardly even start talking about who will take what watch when the northern door to room 7 slams open, and the king stands there, crown on his decaying face.  His sceptre is in one hand, its end glowing.  The glowing eyes in the eye sockets are a raging fire of enmity.

"I SMELL ELF!" he screams into the room.  "I SMELL TREACHERY!"

Without fear, the now-undead king steps into room 7 and opens the door to room 8.  Kahan's fire trap goes off in the lich king's face.  (4 hp dmg. Save made.)

"A lich," Edmure says in astonishment.  He begins mumbling some ancient text and he shrinks in fear in the back of the room, his blind eyes searching.  "For by death is wrought greater change than hath been shown. Whereas in general the spirit that removed cometh back upon occasion, and is sometimes seen of those in flesh (appearing in the form of the body it bore) yet it hath happened that the veritable body without the spirit hath walked. And it is attested of those encountering who have lived to speak thereon that a lich so raised up hath no natural affection, nor remembrance thereof, but only hate. Also, it is known that some spirits which in life were benign become by death evil altogether."

You are now all trapped in room 8 with the lich king in the doorway.  You are not surprised because his voice in room 7 warned you.  You therefore had 1 round to make any preparations you wanted.

Please post: (1) what preparations you made in that round, and (2) what you will be doing during the next round.

When he hears the king's voice, Naj comes to attention, his two handed sword ready for battle.  "We are like fish in a barrel," he says, indicating the small room everyone waits in.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 7 - The King

Flint quickly digs out the Wand of Frost and yells at everyone to "Stay back from the door"   He then (oddly enough) turns to face the back wall of room 8 and begins to cast a spell.

Borimer waits for Flint's attack before rushing at the undead king and then catching his boot on some rubble. His first swing is a travesty due to the unfortunate footwork, but he steps in with a quick second that just may work...

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 7 - The King

Hearing the king coming, Kahan beckons for everyone to step away from the eastern wall of room 8 while casting a spell. When the king gets there, Kahan reaches his hands into the wall and pulls it apart, creating a huge gaping hole in the wall, big enough for any of them to easily fit through. "Blind and elderly first! That would be you, Edmure." the priest states, pulling the older man through the wall as he rushes through room 7 towards room 9. Hopefully the king will be too distracted by Borimer to see the escaping.

If escaping meant preparing for a sneak attack from behind, that is.

Making the hole in the wall between where the numbers 8 and 6 are located.

OOC: Great...I see very bad things happening here, LOL....Hopefully you won't get past room 6 before my spell goes off (and you step into the path of the wand in room 7).  (Crossing my fingers in the hope that Heath is a forgiving and beneficent DM)

OOC: Sorry, redited my msg when I reread yours Kahan.  You ARE escaping to room 6, correct (opening the wall between 8 and 6 I would assume so)?  And THEN going to 7?

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 7 - The King

As the king prepares to enter the room, Kahan has cast a spell creating a hole in the wall between room 8 and 6.  He ushers Edmure through, and the others can follow if they want in Round 1.

Meanwhile, Flint has cast a spell, and he steps through the south wall and disappears, reappearing behind the king (in room 7), where he holds up the wand of frost for use.

During all this, Borimer and Naj attack the king.

Borimer attacks first, but he slips, dropping his weapon and forfeiting any further attacks that round.  (He may quick-draw a handy weapon and attack during phase 2 of the next round, or spend the next round retrieving Chianta.)

Naj swings his two handed sword as Borimer fumbles, hitting the lich-like creature across the chest.  (14 hp dmg.)

Malissin goes through the hole in the wall following Kahan.

Harak stands in Room 8 near where the hole in the wall was created by Kahan.

The lich king swings twice, first at Borimer and then at Naj.  "Najomel!" it screams as its sceptre makes contact with Naj.  (9 hp dmg.  Save vs. death failed. Naj loses 1194 XP. Save vs. spells failed.  Naj ages 19 years.)

Before your eyes, Naj ages slightly, a streak of white showing up in his elven hair.  Luckily, the aging is not as noticeable on an elf as it might be on a human.

Flint lets the Wand of Frost loose, and a cone of cone spreads out across the back of the lich king.  (27 hp dmg.)

The lich king waves its sceptre and seems to almost disappear from view as it stands in the doorway.  (Effect is a duo-dimension spell, changing the lich into a two dimensional creature.)

The lich steps fully into room 8 to continue its assault, which is focused on Naj.

OOC: Not quite sure what Harak is doing, but I wanted to get this post out before I go on vacation.

OOC2:  FYI (and please don't look this up until after the battle, if you're so inclined), the "lich" here is loosely based on the Dark Lord lich variant in Dragon Magazine #210. However, I have to scale it down somewhat because the Dark Lord is too deadly--as in one hit and you're disintegrated "deadly".

ROUND 1:
Naj and Borimer's attacks above happen in round 1.

Flint has used the wand of frost.

As for the rest of you, please indicate your actions after following Kahan through the hole (or not), as to what you will do in round 1 while Naj, Borimer, and Flint are engaging the lich.

As the lich is in two dimensional form currently, attacking it may not have normal or expected results, for better or worse.

OOC:  WOOT!  Yeah, that's right...who's your daddy NOW Lich? LMAO (Sorry couldn't resist)

OOC2: That's just mean...tell me where to find the info and ask me not to look it up for three days?

OOC3: So, having only height and width (no depth) he can be seen (for example) from the sides, but not from the front or back (or vice versa), correct?  Or is it relative to the viewer?  I ask because Borimer and Naj are relatively 'in front' of the Lich, and I (in room 7 at the door to room 9) am somewhat more 45deg to his side/back and was wondering which of us can still see him (if any).

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 7 - The King

I'm going to take the duo-dimension spell as its written more than as it might seem to be in reality, but I will give more of a chance to hit when he is turned sideways. I don't think the spell is well written for monsters...or liches.

So he seems to practically disappear for all intents and purposes from Borimer and Naj's view, and the door to room 8, which opens into room 7, is now blocking Flint's view.  He essentially becomes nothing more than a straight line to a person of his choosing (which is even more effective than invisibility).

He currently appears like a straight line to Borimer and Naj, which will make him much harder to hit and require repositioning as part of the move.  He will counter accordingly.  Trying to reposition and hit him like this the same as hitting a -10 AC.  For others, you get a bonus, meaning it is the same as hitting a 0 AC.  (His normal AC is -3.)

So basically, at least one person has to be "bait."

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 7 - The King

Sheathing the wand of Frost, Flint moves to the NW Corner of room 7 (so he has a view directly into room 8).

OOC: If he gets a 'side' or full view of the Lich and none of the party are in the path of the spell, Flint would like to cast a Lightning Bolt.  I assume Borimer and Naj are basically standing on the '8' in room 8 though...?

Motioning for Flint to move backwards

OOC: Backwards to where?  I have moved to the NW corner of Rm 7 looking South into room 8 (through the open door).  The Lich has moved into room 8 (I assume just inside) per Heath's post.  If you want to cast a spell into room 8 (at the Lich) I would suggest you move beside me so we don't interfere with each other's spells (I am waiting for a chance to cast too....just don't want to hit Borimer or Naj who are still inside room 8)
