Harkahnon Ruins 12 - The Orcs

You begin heading east and enter the throne room (Room 15).  You stop in this room because you hear voices coming from the east (Room 16).  It is a loud voice with an Orcish inflection.

"Where be the kingslayers, thief?  We have unfinished business."

"I don't know," comes back a voice, a very familiar voice.  "I never went in the temple.  I was standing watch."  It is Adaran, and the tone in his voice indicates he is a prisoner of some sort.

Another familiar voice says in Common, "Iffen he knows, he tell soon 'nuff.  They betrayed me.  Cravens all.  And this slobberin' fool led the charge."  The voice belongs to Grung.

[Language unknown: "Whbemo o vorle unwhe?"] another unfamiliar orc voice responds in Orcish.

[Language unknown: "Ioekes ckth k u,"] Grung says.  Then he says in Common, "Listen.  What do you hear?"

"Nothing," says another voice, a non-orc.

"'zactly," says Grung.  "The earthquakes and destruction.  Gone."

"Gruumsh take us all," says yet another orc voice in Common before switching to Orcish: [Language unknown: "Lin tic ichundant ugh t whi lo roeve?"]

You hear some quick discussion in muffled Orcish. [Language unknown: "Ta Uretioone Ave." "Prtio ainentyin'proard." "Ha po ieou." "Was tho Nateli." "Ll whi Ceich Direfo."]
Grung says something in Orcish.  [Language unknown: "Fi Mirut sanichent as, icaectrat m u Ncnili Ouhe.  E ic i lesi ssetta herntiint."]

OOC: The above was done using the language private lines, so those of you who do not speak Orcish do not know what was said in some lines, while others do.  There are at least a couple of you who speak Orcish and at least a couple who do not.

Grung shouts commands to his warriors in Orcish.

The door opens just a crack and you see a hand reach in and lob something inside at you before slamming the door shut again.  At first you think it might be one of those exploding orbs, and you prepare to dive to the ground.  But it is too large and dark, and looking down, you see that it is the dismembered head of Adaran.

Behind you (from the west), you hear the sound of someone -- or something -- approaching, and you remember the demons wandering around this place.

OOC: I still don't have a move from Malissin.  Will NPC if he doesn't post today.  In the meantime, this should get your blood flowing so we can get the action moved well along this week.  It is unlikely that Grung and his experienced warriors will walk through the door and into a trap, knowing that you are there.

You start preparations, and Borimer moves to the western wall just north of the entrance to the room.

Two strange creatures crawl into the room, their backs lined with spikes.  They look like killing machines straight from Hell as they come into the room with chattering claws hitting the ground, and with the swiftness of an insect.

You stand there, jaw dropped, and then you hear Grung yell from the other side of the door:  "Come get us, cowards!"

It is then you notice that these demon creatures have no eyes.  They totally run past you and slam into -- or rather through -- the door, breaking it into splinters as they chase after the voice and noises from the far room where Grung had called.

The two creatures run into the far room, and the sound of battle ensues.

A moment later, there is a flash of burning light with an explosive, thunderous sound, and a heat wave rushes into the room with you.  Some wizard has just set off a fireball in the far room.

You hear quick grunts and the sound of weapons striking, and then silence.

From the far room, you hear Grung's voice call out to you:  "You sends foul beasts to fight for you, cowards?  Come fight the king like men, not dogs."

Then there is silence as he awaits a response.

Borimer gets the benefit of Kahan's Aid spell as he runs into the Time Ark room, with Harak close on his heels.  Flint is casting a spell, and he and Harak turn invisible as they slink into the shadows.

Borimer and Harak first see just a pile of dead and scorched bodies, including the two strange demon creatures that had come through here.

Then they hear a voice, but it is a voice from above.  It commands, "Fire!"

Looking up, you see that Grung has stationed his men around the top balcony that overlooks the Time Ark device and the room Borimer and Harak have just entered.  Grung's archers stand poised above, bows drawn.  Meanwhile, Grung is holding his axe and pointing down.  Next to him is some sort of orc wizard who seems to be struggling with something invisible next to him.

Arrows rain down from above...

Sixteen arrows fly down from above.  They all miss or bounce harmlessly off of armor and sword except for one that hits Borimer and one that hits Harak.  (4hp dmg for Borimer, 2 hp dmg for Harak.)

There are 8 seasoned warrior orcs standing around the overlooking balcony, plus Grung and his otherwise engaged mage.  (Half a dozen more are dead on the first floor, their bodies littering the marble floor.)

Given how crowded it is, I have blown up the map below.  Please indicate which location you are going to, but given the tight quarters, you may not travel through the others to get to a particular individual, but must deal with them as they stand.  Unless wrestling or grappling, you may not occupy the same square as someone else, as each square is only 5 feet.

Grung is shown.  He wields his magic axe.  The orc wizard is shown, as well as the invisible stalker attacking the wizard.  Grung's 8 warriors surround the balcony, each carrying a bow, but each also has a melee weapon at his side.

I have included graph coordinates for you to state where your character will be (A1, B2, etc.).  Please indicate where your character will be at the end of round 1.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 12 - The Orcs

ROUND 1
Borimer moves into C4, attacking Orc8.  With several fast swipes, he hits the orc and knocks it dead to the balcony floor.

Harak slips in unnoticed under the shadows to D4 but bumps into the invisible stalker.  A spell from the spellcasting orc hits the invisible stalker and it *poofs* out of existence.  The spellcaster is very wounded but turns his attention to the sneaking figure of Harak near him.

Kahan uses the Rod to send a chain lightning spell up at Grung.  It hits Grung (21 hp dmg, saving throw made), then arcs around, hitting and killing the spellcaster, and then hitting Harak (16 hp dmg, saving throw made), and then hitting Borimer (9 hp dmg, saving throw made); it also continues around the ring of the balcony, hitting the next orc (Orc 7)(7 hp dmg, saving throw made), and the next one (Orc 6)(10 hp dmg, saving throw made), and the next one (Orc 5) (4 hp, saving throw made), and the next one  (Orc 4)(1 hp dmg, saving throw missed).  The arcing lightning then dissipates out.

Orcs 1 through 6 fire arrows at Borimer.  Malissin and Kahan are invisible and unseen as they move.  Orc 7 drops his bow and grabs his battle axe to engage Borimer.

Only 2 out of the volley of arrows injures Borimer.  The rest miss or bounce away harmlessly.  (11 hp dmg.)

As the invisible stalker and his wizard fall, Grung charges toward Harak and Borimer with his battle axe.

Flint is behind Harak and Borimer on the stairs where Borimer stood a moment ago.

ROUND 3
Flint follows Borimer.

Borimer strikes out toward Grung, who returns the attack with his own axe.

Borimer hits Grung at the knee (critical hit). This results in a knockdown (1/2 move).  (30 hp dmg.)

Grung swings his mighty axe, hitting Borimer across the side.  (14 hp dmg.)

Harak swings but misses with his scimitar.  An axe returns in Harak's direction but misses.

Arrows fly from the remaining orcs around the balcony...

Borimer is hit with 3 arrows (14 dmg) and Harak is hit with 1 arrow (5 dmg).

Meanwhile, Kahan nand Mal run through the western door past the falling demon in the eternal teleportation pit.  A burst of fire escapes its mouth like a fireball from a dragon's breath.

Malissin dodges out of the way but Kahan is hit directly by the fire.  (14 hp dmg.)  The force of the fire escaping the demon's lizard-like mouth is that it is now quickly being propelled to the far side of the pit.  It will reach the far side at the end of the next round and be active.

Malissin and Kahan move past the fiery demon and climb the northern stairs.  (They can continue on the second level toward Grung next round.)

ROUND 4
Flint begins casting.

Mal and Kahan are running up the stairs.  (OOC: FYI there is a 1/3 chance the demon will land on the second floor after it momentum carries it from the eternal falling pit, which is the same floor/room Mal and Kahan have to pass back in front of before going after Grung.)

Borimer swings, missing Grung.  His sword hits the side of the balcony railing and is knocked from his hands (critical miss).

Grung swings but misses Borimer.  (Aid spell helped one of them be a miss.)

Harak continues sweeping his scimitar around the southern end of the orcs (orc 6).  (Critical hit.)  Harak severs the head of the orc with one fell sweep of the sword.

The remaining orcs fire arrows again.  This time, Flint is visible but they are already aiming at the other targets, so he is not targeted this round.

Two arrows hit.  One hits Harak in the leg, just grazing him.  (1 hp dmg).  Another hits Borimer for a far more substantial effect is it imbeds in his torso.  (6 dmg, critical hit.  Borimer is struck in the torso:  Armor damage, torso struck, 2/3 move, –2 penalty to attacks.)

Flint finishes his spell, and the axe hilt on Grung's axe becomes covered with a slippery grease.  Grung's battleaxe flies from his hands.  (Saving throw missed.)  Grung begins reaching for the two handaxes hanging around his back.

OOC: Mal and Kahan will arrive at the end of round 5 and can attack in round 6, assuming they are not waylaid next round by the lizard demon.

In reply to Borimer (msg # 76):

What artifact are you referring to?

Right now, Borimer moves at 2/3 regular speed.  Quickdraw would count for 1 out of 3 attacks (but 1 out of 2 right now).  So he could draw another weapon or pick something up and attack once, given the arrow in his torso that slows him down.  This slowdown also affects his ability to be the first to attack every round until it wears off.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 12 - The Orcs

ROUND 5
Borimer grabs Chianta off the ground.

Grung seizes this opportunity to perform a charging move on Borimer, grappling him to go over the balcony.  (Critical hit.)  Grung slams into Borimer full force.  They are about equal strength, and Grung grapples him as they both fall over the side of the balcony, landing roughly on the stone floor below (next to the Time Ark).  (Borimer suffers 8 damage from the fall; Grung suffers 3 damage.)  Borimer lands on his left leg wrong, and it crumples in pain beneath him.  (Critical hit effects on Borimer:  left knee disabled, knockdown, 1/2 move, lose rest of turn.)

Knockdown Effects: (saving throw missed) Borimer falls prone to the ground after the knockdown, the fall from the balcony, and landing wrong on his left leg.  (See rules clarifications thread "knockdown effects" to see what must be done to get up again, but the 1/2 move for the busted knee will still remain.)

Meanwhile, Flint sends down a mass of magic missiles down upon Grung, but they don't do as much damage as hoped.  (9 total damage.)  Grung is gravely wounded but still alive.  (7/70 hp.)  He rolls away from Borimer to take something from the sack at his side.

Harak misses the orc with his scimitar.  Arrows fly toward Harak and Flint.  Two arrows hit Harak (11 hp dmg), and one hits Flint (6 hp dmg).  OOC: The magic missile spell has a fast speed, which is why he was able to get the initiative and cast it before being hit by the arrow.  So his spell wasn't interrupted.

The other orc swings his axe at Harak, but misses.  (Critical miss.)  The blow in these close quarters instead accidentally hits the orc next to him on the balcony.  (4 dmg.)

Meanwhile, Malissin and Kahan are approaching.

As they pass the neverending pit room, the dragon-like demon lands on the second floor, which just happens to be the floor they are on.  It is across the pit from them.  As they speed through, Kahan uses the staff and calls forth a fire elemental.

They continue on and reach the balcony.  Kahan and Malissin can attack the orcs on the second floor next round.  Because Kahan stopped to use the staff, Malissin is slightly ahead of him, just north of the balcony room.

Kahan instructs his elemental to fight the demon while he looks around the battlefield. Borimer looked badly wounded from his fight with Grung, and was probably in need of healing. Of course, he was currently on the wrong level, and the priest knew healing spells couldn't travel, unfortunately. So, deciding to throw caution to the wind, the young holy man decides that jumping from the balcony is the best decision. Mal, Harak and Flint could handle the orcs... probably. As he wonders about this, he begins running and jumps down, hoping he learned a thing or two about tumbling from his former rogue companion.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 12 - The Orcs

OOC: Let me clarify in case the last round moves weren't clear enough.

All players and enemies are on level 2 except Grung and Borimer.  Grung and Borimer went over the side of the railing and received falling damage as they slammed into the floor of level 1.

Grung is backing north into the worship area with the broken pews, so he is directly under Kahan and Malissin, who are now on level 2 (the floor above him).  So Malissin can't backstab Grung, but he could backstab one of the other orcs who are on level 2 with the bows.

Since Malissin was out of the action and going up a level, I will translate his misunderstanding of where they are at into a mistaken identity, having him attack the orc next to the northern entrance thinking it is Grung (and being mistaken since he is sneaking up from behind).

Because Grung is directly under Malissin and Kahan, he is out of their reach unless they maneuver into a position where they can see him and reach him with a ranged weapon/spell.  Frankly, Malissin and Kahan probably don't know where Grung is (or Borimer) since this all happened out of their view.  Flint and Harak, however, have line of sight to Grung (and Borimer) from the second floor balcony (south side), and have height advantage.

Borimer suffered a knockdown and slowed movement due to injuring his torso (arrow critical hit) and knee (falling damage crit), so he is about 10 feet south of Grung, who is moving north away from Borimer and pulling something out of the sack at his side.  Due to his injuries, Borimer's normally very fast speed has been reduced to 1/3 of normal.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 12 - The Orcs

ROUND 6
Malissin attempts to backstab the nearest archer...and fails miserably.

Kahan instructs the elemental to fight the demon as he then looks south to observe the battle, and then he runs to the balcony and jumps over the edge to the floor 15 feet below...  (roll failed)

Kahan isn't the best at tumbling, especially with his armor on, and he lands heavy on the floor, hurting himself in the process.  (5 hp dmg.)  But he is next to Borimer now.

Flint, meanwhile, has been pulling out the wand of frost and waving it around the area where the other orcs are at.  An ice storm appears over their heads.  Unfortunately, you are in a small enclosed area, with Kahan and Borimer directly below, and the ice storm has a minimal 20 foot radius.

Harak hacks at the next orc in line.  Already wounded, the orc goes down after two powerful slashes of the scimitar.

Borimer makes a quick shot at Grung but misses.

Grung pulls out a vial of blue liquid that he drinks down while moving north toward the neverending pit drop.

Archers fire...

Two arrows hit.  One hits Harak in the shoulder (3 hp dmg) and one hits Kahan on the ground below (2 hp dmg).

The ice storm fully forms...

The powerful hail rains down on the orcs.  They are still heavily wounded from the previous attacks and chain lightning, and the ice storm is too much for them.  Only one still stands after the powerful hail rains down on their heads.

Harak manages to dodge the worst of the storm but is still pelted with painful hail.  (Saving throw made; half damage; 13 hp dmg.)

Borimer and Kahan are mostly shielded by the ceiling/floor above, and the hail does not hit them.

Flint is not so lucky.  He is within the radius of his own ice storm but jumps out of the way in time to only take half damage.  (7 dmg.)  But Malissin ducks back in time to avoid all damage, his rogue skills coming in very handy.

The demon, meanwhile, is screeching and attacking the fire elemental.  The two are a strange match since they both use fire based attacks and both are immune to fire.

But you hear something from the northwest area.  It is a heavy stomping of something very large, so heavy its footsteps make the floor of the temple tremble beneath you, and you realize you have not yet met every demon released by the Venue Ark's power.

Mal, if able, will attack the nearest orc. From behind, preferably. Even better if the orc was unarmed, asleep, and possibly even in a coma to boot. While Mal considered himself a decent person overall and tried to avoid violence where possible, when the swords were drawn and the magic flung, he fought to win and that meant that he didn't fight 'fair'.

Only one orc remains, and he fires off an arrow that misses Harak.  Meanwhile, Harak attacks him with his hands, hitting him and stunning him.  (Saving throw missed.)

This allows Malissin to come up and backstab him, taking down the last of Grung's accomplices.

Grung is quaffing a bluish liquid as two arrows from Borimer fly by his head.  Grung's body glows for a brief instant, and then his wounds begin to heal.  (Potion of Healing.)

Kahan is casting, and Borimer is healed.  (Cure serious wounds.)

Flint casts a lightning bolt that starts right in front of Borimer and directly hits Grung.  (29 hp dmg, saving throw missed.)

The lightning bolt is more than Grung can take, and he falls dead to the ground, dropping the container of bluish liquid next to him.

Something is approaching from the second floor northern area.  It bellows like some angry dragon might.

The other demon is breaking past the fire elemental to come to the spot where Harak and Malissin stand.

19 (level 1), 16, up the stairs to 22 (level 2), doorway to 32d; thats about 14 squares and borimer has an 18" movement rate

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 12 - The Orcs

Everyone makes it up to the second floor again.  About this time, you see the lizard-headed demon shove the fire elemental into the bottomless teleportation pit, and the result is an eerie rotation of light that comes and goes as it falls and falls past the floor again and again, its fire leaving a trail like an elongated candle flame.

The lizard creature turns toward you again, and you see it has a head resembling a lizard or dragon, the claws of an eagle, and the body of a brutish bulette.  Its eyes focus in on you with intelligence and evil as it is lit and then shadowed with each passing fall of the fire elemental.

You remember that it breathed fire. It seems to be unhurt by the fire elemental's attacks.

You hear another screeching call that sends a shiver through you, and you realize that the other demon, whatever it may be, is on the third floor above you somewhere, its heavy feet plodding around to the room that would be south of room 20c (a room you have not yet investigated).  It seems to be moving north (toward 20c, where it can go up or down the never ending pit).

"Someone hasten my stride like before!"

Borimer waits only long enough for anyone to cast their magic before he rushes to meet the demon at the door, Chianta swinging back and forth before him.

"Everybody Take cover!!" Flint decides to use the one last charge on the wand to conjure the exact same spell again.

Use Ice storm from the wand aiming to center the area on the demon

Borimer changes his plans upon hearing Flint's warning, and he ducks down to avoid the wand before charging the demon.

im thinking borimer could do this since he was going to wait just long enough for a possible haste spell anyway. if not, then borimer will boldly continue his charge fully unaware of his future freezing :)

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 12 - The Orcs

Borimer stops in his tracks as Flint calls out.  Harak and Mal slink away invisibly but maintain their distance.  An ice storm suddenly appears over the lizard demon's head, raining down on it and injuring it severely.  (58 hp dmg.)

Clearly angered by this, it fires a rocket-like fireball from its mouth straight at the wizard.  Flint jumps to the side but is badly injured by the fireball.  Kahan and Borimer manage to jump out of the way of the cone of fire, but Flint is hit directly and falls dead to the ground.  (22 hp dmg.)  Flint is now badly burned and dead. (At -15 hp.) (Flint had been injured by Esylia for 11 hp, by an arrow for 6 hp, and by his own ice storm for 7 hp.  He only had a total of 31 hp, so the 22 damage from this put him at death, which occurs at -10 hp.)

Borimer's delay also allows Kahan to cast a protective spell on him.  (Borimer now protected by protection from evil.)

The creature is very angry, very injured, and turning its head toward Borimer and Kahan next.

You hear stomping that indicates the other large creature is crossing the floor above you.

Androlus is still in the throne room below, but is likely safe for now.

OOC: For basic play purposes, this creature is treated as a greater yugoloth.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 12 - The Orcs

Kahan begins withdrawing with a chant, his eyes rolling up as he does so.

Borimer charge while Mal and Harak sneak up behind the lizard headed demon.

It rakes out with its claws, and bites.  All three attacks miss Borimer.

It is hard to tell what exactly happens next as Borimer, Mal and Harak all strike the creature at once.  Mal slips his blade under the bulette-like shell, and Harak strikes from behind, his scimitar slicing through its neck.  Borimer makes an amazing strike with his sword, driving the blade up through its jaw and skull.  But the end result is unmistakeable, the demon creature flops dead to the stone floor.  You quickly withdraw your weapons as you see its body begin dissolving.  Truly, it was a demon-like creature and not mere mortal flesh.

Kahan is deep in contemplation.
