Re: Here There Be Giants 4

Shapfren hadn't spoken, she just kept feeling bad about being trapped on this awful place. "This is not fair! I'm a princess, I should be safe and warm somewhere nicer than here, these ugly smelling barbarians deserve to be punished for daring to want to eat me!" she began performing the same fast and contrasting tune she had used he day before on the eggs, hoping to aim it somewhere closer to the giant's heads.

Fireball

Is she going to give warning to those engaged in melee that she's casting fireball within 10 feet of them?

The place is very big and so are the giants, aiming for a space far enough from us and close enough to the giants so they get the full effect while mostly shielding us from it. besides can't sing and talk at the same time

I'll assume you are aiming at the 25 foot tall ceiling just slightly up and behind them.  I haven't done the math or looked at the rule/radius yet, but that gives you the best benefit of the doubt.

Re: Here There Be Giants 4

You engage the giants in battle, gaining a surprise attack on them.

ROUND ONE

Borimer makes two strong attacks against the unsuspecting largest giant, which seems to be the leader.  He makes a critical attack that actually misses its belly and slashes into its right thigh.  Blood gushes out of the wound.  (75 total damage, Critical effect = major bleeding, 1/2 move.)

Tahldar casts mirror image, and six replicant Tahldars appear around you.

Shapfren begins casting.

Donovan attacks the largest giant with his two blades.  Unfortunately, the giant dodges the swipes now that he is onto your attack.

Kahan is reading a spell to cast on the largest giant.  The leader is reduced to a size of under four feet tall.

Shae continues to hide in the background.

Hatchman attacks with his sword.  Both his slashes also miss.

Lukas attacks and makes a critical hit with his short sword against the leader.  (14 hp dmg.)  His sword opens a vein in the left leg.  (Coincidentally, Lukas' critical hit roll was exactly the same as Borimer's, except on the other leg, so now both legs are spouting blood in profuse bleeding.  1/4 move for the leader now.)

Shapfren's fireball explodes near the ceiling, blossoming down.  The part can feel its warmth, but none are injured.  The giants, however, are not prepared for such a magical feat and take massive damage to their heads and shoulders.  (All failed saving throws.)

The leader, due to his reduction in size, does not take damage from the fireball.  The spear holder takes 15 damage, and the club holder takes 26 damage.  Their hair is literally burnt off their faces, and they are completely bald and scalding as they cry out in pain, but giants have always been known to have a high tolerance for pain, and this redoubles their efforts.

The large spear is thrust by the spear holder leader at Borimer, striking him cleanly and hard in the left arm.  (Critical hit=34 damage; Left arm skewered and destroyed; Arm destroyed, no move/attack, major bleeding.)  Borimer has to fall back as his left arm is completely removed from his body, the same arm where he lost his hand just a couple days earlier.  His ruined shield falls to the ground, and blood pours from the wound.  He is unable to attack as he drops his sword, reaches over, and tries to stop the bleeding.  (FYI, the critical hit roll was for left arm and a roll of 12, which result is posted above.)

The club holder swings at Donovan but misses.  The Leader swings at Lukas and hits, but his reduced size spear only does minor damage.  (4 hp dmg.)

Giant 1: 76/165 hp (Currently: 25 due to reduction spell, plus he is at a 1/4 move, is bleeding profusely, and has lost his strength bonuses; his spear was also reduced in size.)
Giant 2: 108/123 hp
Giant 3: 97/123 hp

OOC: This was a hard one to work out.  I had to work out the timing of the attacks and the spells, particularly due to the reduction spell, and also taking into account Kahan prepping a wizard spell on the rod of absorption.  The dice were unfortunately not rolling in your favor.

Re: Here There Be Giants 4

Talhdar screams out "NO!  Kahan help him!" as he witnesses Borimer's horrific injury.  Wasting little time the diminutive elf begins casting anew.

OOC:  Tahldar will move to find a spot to line up the two remaining large giants, even if this puts him in harms way.  He'll rely on his images if need be.  He wishes to cast lightning bolt on them both, but not hit anyone in the party.  I'm not sure what spell Kahan cast on the giant, but if it was reduce the spell does not affect strength or hp's, just weapon damage.  Which isn't all that useful really which is why I have not, and will not, cast it.

Re: Here There Be Giants 4

I actually had it affect hit points and damage.  Looking back at the fine print in the rule, I see you are right that it doesn't affect hit points or strength, but I did adjust proportionately.  (That's my error.  It just makes more sense that they would change too.  But I won't do that next time.)

We should have taken the chance to leave instead of getting deeper into the mountain thought Shapfren after watching her savior being savagely maimed once again, this wasn't good by any chance and she was growing more and more scared by the minute. However she decided to keep performing and changed the tune to one more faster and fluid, they had to stop at least their leader and hope the others decided to retreat.

Shae casts a spell to conjure and summon an ape to fight the giants.  She tries to stay hidden behind them but will order it to attack the giants from behind in the hopes that they will turn around and expose their backs to the rest of the party.

Re: Here There Be Giants 4

FYI, for everyone's knowledge, regarding a destroyed limb, here is the rule for curing it while the destroyed limb is still fresh, which requires a minimum of cure critical wounds.  This does not restore a severed limb, which requires a regenerate spell (a 7th level cleric spell):

Crushed, Shattered, or Destroyed: Limbs that suffer this kind of catastrophic injury may never be usable again; hits to the torso, abdomen or head of this magnitude are often lethal. If the victim survives, he will never naturally recover to his normal self. A limb damaged this way will be useless for the rest of his life, and hits anywhere else will leave the victim incapacitated. The victim will be bedridden for at least one to eight months before he can even regain a semblance of mobility.
A cure critical wounds spell or other healing magic capable of restoring 20 hp of damage can repair the damage of this kind of injury. In addition, the bones of the affected area (if any) are assumed to be broken and may require another application of healing magic to repair.
Destroyed shoulders, hips, or limbs reduce the victim to 50% of his normal maximum hit points. Any other wounds of this magnitude reduce the victim to 25% of his normal total.

Re: Here There Be Giants 4

ROUND 2
The stench of these giants is so strongs it feels like it is clinging to your bodies and the insides of your nose.

Kahan runs to Borimer and begins casting.

Tahldar moves to a position to line up the two giants and begins casting.

Shae begins casting.

Shapfren casts magic missile, as the missiles fly from her hand and hit the leader.  Lukas also attacks the shrunken leader.  Both of them hit the leader, knocking him dead to the ground.

(Morale check rolled...and passed.)

Donovan turns to the third giant (with the club).  He hits and misses in his attacks, for a total of 14 damage.

Borimer is on the floor in pain and bleeding profusely as Kahan's hands become overrun with his blood.  Kahan finishes his spell, and the bleeding stops, but the left arm now hangs useless at his side, unable to even hold a shield up anymore.  (Borimer receives up to 40 hit points back from the serious wounds spell and can fight next round.)

The giants begin swinging.  One of Tahldar's mirror images disappears as it is struck with a spear.

A giant club the size of a small tree swings through the air, hitting Donovan full in the stomach and causing massive internal injuries.  (41 hp dmg.)  The ranger lumbers back, badly wounded from the powerful blow, but he is still in the fight.  (No critical hit.)

Tahldar casts a lightning bolt that flies from his hands.  The lightning hits both giants as they try to step out of the way.  (Both made saving throws and suffer only 12 and 13 damage.)

Shae finishes her spell, and a large gorilla-like ape appears behind the giants.  It immediately roars and rushes to attack.

Giant 1 (leader):  dead
Giant 2 (spear): 96/123 hp
Giant 3 (club): 70/123 hp

FYI: The stats I am using are the hill giant stats in the 2nd edition monster manual
