The Test of the Faithful - 5

Experience Points:

As usual, please update your character sheets, and add any XP bonuses, if applicable.  If you level up, please let me know and make the adjustments accordingly.

With the new pink gem in hand from the "FEAR" test, you retreat to the semicircular room (marked as "7" on the map):

The door on the eastern wall in the niche is still closed, and you tightly close the two stone doors on the northwest and southwest walls.

Between the healing spells, herbalism, and healing proficiencies of the group, as well as a good night's sleep ahead of you, you all manage to return to your full hit point status and strength.

You can also cast any other available spells before resting.

Everything is the same about the room except that now the word "FEAR" inscripted on the wall has a glowing luster as though lit up, in addition to the previously lustrous CONFUSION and DARKNESS.

PLEASE SEE BOLDED SECTION BELOW FOR UPDATE ON THE SHELVES.  REMEMBER THAT YOU DECIDED TO HOLD OFF PUTTING THE GEMS IN THEIR SLOTS UNTIL YOU HAVE ALL THE GEMS.

OOC: I need list of final spells to put into Rod Of Absorption.

(My next post will be the overnight resting, so I am considering it still within an hour or so of coming back to the semicircular room--before resting.)

Here is a description of the room again for you again:

This semicircular room has three entry/exit points:  the door you entered, a door on the south side of the west wall leading west (which is slightly ajar), and a door inset into a small niche in the eastern wall (see map).

On the wall behind you (the west wall), there are intricate carvings, which read:

"THE TEST OF THE FAITHFUL. Only those who prove true may transcend and descend.  Only those who prove true are worthy.  The seventh test revealed below."

A tapestry is hung on either side of these engravings.  Though they must be old and are filled with dust, they are in impeccable shape, obviously preserved through magic.

The left tapestry portrays the back of a black-cloaked man standing atop a mountain, his hands held high.  At the bottom of the mountain, hordes of followers bow in obeisance.

The right tapestry portrays a silvery dragon with piercing blue eyes, its tail winding around a black-cloaked figure.  In each of its foreclaws, it also holds a black-cloaked figure, and yet another is crushed between its teeth.  The dragon peers out from a cave in a mountain, and at the top of the mountain, you see the small figure of the cloaked man, hands still raised.

Below the wording and in between the two tapestries, there is another "shelf" that is closed to viewing.  You imagine it will open if the right conditions are met.

On the curved section of wall in front of you, words are elaborately carved into the wall with gold insets.  There are three words on the left, and three words on the right.  Each word is repeated multiple times in several languages.  In order from left to right, the words are:

 1) DARKNESS
 2) CONFUSION
 3) MADNESS
 4) MIGHT
 5) FEAR
 6) EVIL

The words DARKNESS and CONFUSION and FEAR have a glowing luster to them that the others do not, as if they are magically lit up.

Under each of the multi-lingual words, you see a square area where there is obviously some sort of shelf or casing built into the stone wall.  Indeed, under the first two glowing words, the "shelf" has rotated down 90 degrees, revealing two things:  each has a small indentation the same size as the gems you have recovered; each also has an item just above that indentation.
Under the first two words, the small indentation for the gems has receded into the wall and the shelves that appeared and gave you the weapons are visible.  Under the word FEAR, the shelf has rotated down 90 degrees revealing a small indentation the size of the pink gem, and an item.

This item is a black and brown composite bow with the word "Oathbow" inscribed in Elven along its edge.  (Meant for Shapfren.)

Oathbow

Of elven make, this white +2 composite longbow (+2 Str bonus) whispers "Swift defeat to my enemies" in Elven when nocked and pulled. Once per day, if the firer swears aloud to slay her target (a free action), the bow’s whisper becomes the low shout "Swift death to those who have wronged me." Against such a sworn enemy, the bow has a +5 enhancement bonus, and arrows launched from it deal an additional 2d6 points of damage (and ×4 on a critical hit instead of the normal ×3). However, the bow is treated as only a masterwork weapon against all foes other than the sworn enemy, and the wielder takes a -1 penalty on attack rolls with any weapon other than the oathbow. These bonuses and penalties last for seven days or until the sworn enemy is slain or destroyed by the wielder of the oathbow, whichever comes first.

The oathbow may only have one sworn enemy at a time. Once the wielder swears to slay a target, he cannot make a new oath until he has slain that target or seven days have passed. Even if the wielder slays the sworn enemy on the same day that he makes the oath, he cannot activate the oathbow’s special power again until 24 hours have passed from the time he made the oath.

Shae casts the spells and prepares to rest, letting Shapfren get the interesting bow while she clings to her ancestral spear.  She gets her bedroll ready and makes sure the doors are tightly closed and cannot be opened, and that no beetles can fit through.  "What a memorable day," she comments as she lays down to pray for spells and rest.

Ooc: Shae is not sure what spells she can give for the rod of absorption since she has cleric related spells and has access to them all.  She also just leveled up!

Tahldar settles down to rest once he has given Kahan spells for his rod from the available amount he has left.  Which isn't much.

The mage then casts a dancing light spell to give them a soft light to see by.  One which he knows will dissipate in about twenty minutes.  Enough time to settle in and then blink out, allowing them to sleep.

Didit just goes straight to the bow, she holds it in her hands and feels it. She looks around in case someone wants it, but she has made up her mind about keeping it. When seeing Shae and thaldar contribute with spells for the rod, she goes closer and speaks "When I said I didn't have any spells left I wasn't truly accurate, but I doubt an invisibility spell or an illusion will fool the tests"

"If Tahldar had not already given me an Invisibility spell I would gladly take yours. What illusion are you talking about? I might not end up needing these spells for the tests but I will likely use them at some point. The more spells I can have access to, the less I will need to rely on you spellcasters for less than useful spells so you can focus your efforts on more meaningful spells," Kahan replies as he looks over the book that came with the rod. "I am really glad that cleric 'gave' me this rod. It is rather useful and I dare say I put it to better use than the last cleric that had it, eh Borimer?" he laughs.

Re: The Test of the Faithful - 5

You settle down for the night--assuming it is night.  It is hard to tell in this dark and ancient ruin inside the mountain.

In the middle of the night, a sound awakens you.  As you rise, you realize it is the clickety-clacking of the multitude of beetles outside the door.  What strikes you as odd is that the sounds are coming from the northwest door, not the southwest one that leads to the area you encountered them previously.  At some point during the last test, they must have moved to the northern half of the testing area.

After a minute or two, the sound of the beetles diminishes as they leave the area.  You are glad you kept the stone doors closed overnight, or you may have a rude awakening.

Nothing else occurs overnight, and you wake up feeling refreshed and good as new.

OOC: As mentioned earlier, between spells, skills and rest, everyone gets back to their normal hit points by the time your rest is over.

Also, I am not exactly clear what is being used as a light source.  Torches won't last forever, and we use a modified version of the "light" spell in this game.  There is literally no outside light at all where you are, so light sources are critical.  Even infravision/nightvision does not work well (if at all) in absolute darkness.

speaking of the missing hand, wasn't there an adventure where borimer had to give back an npc's severed hand to another npc?  that would have been foreshadowing of him losing his own hand.  not that this is to keep you from worrying about how borimer is carrying the lantern, its entirely for nostalgia and/or literary reference.

Kahan: I think you are thinking of the light from after your battle with Esylia (the medusa) who is the sister of Syrissa (the good medusa). That was in the Harkhanon Ruins and can be found here:
link to a message in this game

--see messages 30-32.

Kahan opens the small jewelry box, which is covered in a black leather.  It snaps open as if on springs.  Its insides have mirrors on the bottom and underside of the lid.

Nested inside in a clasp is a white jewel that is growing brightly.  It is glowing so bright that it appears Esylia was using this as her light source.  (OOC: Think of it as a flashlight.)  The light-jewel acts the same as a bullseye lantern, directing a beam of light in one direction for up to 60 feet in a conical shape.  If taken out of the case, it acts the same as a regular lantern but is more difficult to hold onto without blocking light, as it is perfectly smooth and very small.

I had forgotten about this as well.  But we also had an issue with the anti-magic ray from the golden dragon statuette knocking out the magic of many items. I honestly don't recall what was and wasn't affected.  We should get a master inventory prepared because you guys have been adventuring for so long...

Borimer: I believe you are thinking of the time you guys accidentally gave the Hand and Eye of Vecna to help the injured translator who had been maimed so he couldn't see or write for translation.  The stories actually get mixed up in my head because I've run several groups through similar adventures.

OOC:
The box that holds it is about the size of a human foot.  It could be strapped about the waist on a belt.  If you take the glowing jewel out, I'm not sure what ingredients you have to strap it to anything (chains, jewelmaker equipment) since it would need to be fastened like jewelry or have a good chance of falling out and getting lost (or being covered up if put in a pouch).

The box has a clasp-like handle on top, and it opens by two mirrored doors that open horizontally (not vertical like a chest or normal jewelry box).  The two doors can be locked open (to spread the light like a lantern with the mirrors) or locked closed (to keep out all light).

You put the gnomes in the semicircular room and close the doors to keep them safe.  (If you want any additional warding spells or anything, let me know.)

Then you remember that in the previous test, you found out what the test was by placing the cube under the doorway and seeing what word lights up.

Borimer and the group are able to successfully open both of the stone dragon doors by pushing the orb and rolling the door up.

You place the golden cube under the door to the west, and the word "MADNESS" lights up on one side of the cube.  You place the cube under the eastern door, and the word "MIGHT" lights up on the cube.

(I think I forgot to say this, but the words on the cube disappear into its intricate carvings again every time you leave the specific "test," but then reappear and stay permanent when the gem from each test is place in its slot in the semicircular room.)

The doors begin to close almost immediately after opening them.  In the brief glimpse you had, you saw that each of these two rooms is a dark, unadorned square room with a 10 foot square pit leading down to darkness.  One ancient iron wrought ladder leads down on each side of each pit.

You put the gnomes in the semicircular room, close the doors so they can remain there safely with their lantern, and you return to the MADNESS test.

Upon entering, the door closes behind you.  Only your light amulet and the glowing cube emit any light.

You look down the pit with the four sets of ladders going down.  The ladders go down into darkness, not into a natural darkness, but into another of those darkness spells that seem to be common in this ancient temple to obscure what lies below.  So each of the 4 ladders goes down about 20 feet and disappears into a cloud of utter blackness.

Shae tosses small pieces of rubble down the hole.  They disappear into the magical darkness, and you don't hear anything below.  It is then you remember the magical silence spells in addition to the darkness spells that were cast.

Lukas and Leo descend the ladders with ropes attached.  As they get to the darkness, all sight and sound of them disappear.  You are left feeling only their weight on the rope as they continue to descend.

"The darkness and silent area only seems to cover about 15 feet of the descent.  After that it cleared and we could see and hear again.  Immediately we saw another dragon statue, this time with a purple gem.  I left it for now.  There was also a stone doorway but there was no apparent way to open it, other than removing the gem I imagine. Also, the floor appears to have mirror-like qualities from a type of reflective metal I am not familiar with.  Other than that, I didn't notice anything remarkable."  Pausing for a second, he adds "Oh, and the ladder does appear to be safe.  At least both of us made it down without mishap."

Re: The Test of the Faithful - 5

Everyone reaches the bottom of the pit safely.  The darkness and silence spell only lasted for about 15 feet before opening up. into normal darkness, but this one is lit up by your light gem.

You are inside the pit leading down, with walls on all sides.  There is an ancient stone door on one wall of the pit.  There is also, right in the middle of the pit floor, another of those dragon pedestals.  This one has a purple gem in the maw of the dragon.

The stone door appears that it will not open until the gem is removed from the dragon's maw on the pedestal.  There are not any marks, rubble, or anything else on the floor or walls.  The floor is made of very reflective metal, like a mirror.

You find on the reflecting floor the pebble that Shae had dropped down here, but nothing else.

When Shae removes the gem, the metal reflective floor and surrounding metal ladders that touch it become electrified.  At the same time, the stone door rolls open to the side...

Borimer suffers 12 points of electrical damage as he leaps to the far room.
Kahan suffers 8 hp damage as he follows.
Leo Suffers 6 damage.
Lukas suffers 8 damage.
Shae suffers 14 damage.
Shapfren suffers 12 damage.
Tahldar suffers 10 damage.

Borimer, Kahan, Leo, and Tahldar manage to escape the room.  Lukas, Shae and Shapfren are stuck inside, paralyzed with their arms and bodies twitching.  Borimer and Kahan stand at the door and pull them through.

Lukas suffers 5 points additional damage.  Shae suffers 3 points additional damage, and Shapfren suffers 4 points additional damage.

Shapfren is the last through, and the door begins closing.  She barely is pulled through just before it shuts on her twitching leg.

The door closes behind you.  At first, you are blinded but what appears to be an infinite array of lights all around.  Then as your eyes begin to adjust, you realize that what you are seeing is the reflection of your light gem being reflected off thousands of metal mirrors.  You also see your own reflections.  The door that just closed behind you is also covered in a metallic reflective surface.

Reaching forward and around to "feel" where you are at, this is essentially a passage of 3 foot wide mirrors set at angles to each other to create thousands of images and make it nearly impossible to tell where the corridor leads.  Where you stand, it appears to be about 6 feet wide, and pushing forward, you feel that it veers slightly to the left about 10 feet in front of you.  The floor is also covered in the same metallic reflective surface, and so is the ceiling 12 feet above you.  The floor and ceiling metallic "tiles" are also at angles instead of one solid sheet, so they also reflect various images.  This also makes the floor very uneven, constantly going up or down in 3x6 foot tiles.

You dim the light somewhat and Kahan starts marking mirrors.  The mirrors, however, form a long and winding path, and you soon find that some lead in different directions to dead ends.  If he marks every mirror, he will run out of ink before long.

The first dead end is easy to spot, but after 30 or 40 feet of maneuvering through the mirrors, the path curves to the left or goes to the right.

You see thousands of reflected images of yourselves in the mirrors, which is dizzying and mesmerizing, but so far, nothing out of the ordinary.

The mirrors are made of a metallic, silver-like material.  They cannot be broken, even with Borimer's great strength.

One problem you find with marking the mirrors is that the "markings" then reflect off the other mirrors, making it very difficult to determine without touching the mirror which one contains the marking.

Lukas fires the arrow to the left.  It goes 12 feet before striking a metal mirror.  The problem you find is that the mirrors make it nearly impossible to tell where the corridor turns without getting right up next to the mirror.

Scratching the mirror doesn't really do much.  You scratch it, only to find the scratch reflected a thousand times in the other mirrors.

After the 12 feet to your left, the corridor T's off to the left or right. In the reflections, you see a mirror that, unlike the others, is not connected directly to the next mirror, but instead has a white wooden border around it.  It appears to be somewhere off to the right side, though you will have to actually get to it to know for sure.

OOC: I'm thinking we probably don't have to do this by PM.  I had no reason to do so other than that the party was separated.  So let's just have the parties post in different colors (unless you prefer PMs).  This way, we don't have to take additional time to update people later.

Borimer, Lukas, Leo and Shae can post in blue.

Kahan, Shapfren, and Tahldar can post in green.

Remember you are only in proximity to the people of the same color, so avoid cross talking to the others.

Kahan, Shapfren, and Tahldar follow the buzzing sound.  They weave through the confusing mirrors until they see reflections of their companions.  As it turns out, their companions are at the source of the buzzing.  The buzzing is coming from the mirror in front of them, as it shakes and shimmers.  The door is framed in a ruby red frame to set it apart from the other mirrors that all touch.

The party is all back together now.

Re: The Test of the Faithful - 5

You all hold hands, and Shae touches the fast vibrating mirror with the ruby red frame.  An electric shock goes through each of you...

Borimer takes 6 damage.
Kahan takes 9 damage.
Leo takes 7 damage.
Lukas takes 12 damage.
Shae takes 9 damage.
Shap takes 4 damage.
Tahldar takes 8 damage.

The painful energy surges quickly through you, causes intense pain, and then Shae is jerked back from the mirror.  Your bodies continue to shake (dazed) for 1-4 rounds, in which you have no control over your muscles.

You also notice in this brief powerless interval that the explosion of energy sent a wave of energy and high pitched ring down the hall of mirrors.

It apparently has also wakened something.  You hear a high pitched squeal in the distance.  It is not human, and it sounds angry.

The turns in the mirror tunnels does not allow you to see what nature of beast this is, but it lets out another squeal, and this one sounds just a little closer as it echoes throughout the mirror maze.

Re: The Test of the Faithful - 5

You move away from the disconcerting sound and toward the slumped figure.  What you find is a corpse of a drow.  You cannot tell how long the drow has been dead because its body is slathered in a slimy substance that appears to have preserved its body.

The drow is slim and short, only 5 feet tall and under 100 pounds.  At its side is a short sword and dagger, both sheathed.  He carries a backpack and is clad in a leather armor, all of which is drenched in the slimy substance.  He appears to have died from some sort of claw slash across the chest.

In his left hand is a large jar containing the slimy substance.  It appears he slathered himself with it before death.

In his right hand he clutches a scroll.  Prying it out, you see that it reads, "If I am dead, revive me and I am at your service. A raise dead spell is sufficient. My body is preserved. Help me please."  It appears to be written in his own blood.

Re: The Test of the Faithful - 5

OOC: For purposes of avoiding confusion, let me introduce our newest player, playing Vuz.  (Is that what he likes to be called?)

Vuz is a drow rogue.  The 'death' he experienced caused him extreme memory losses like amnesia.  He remembers very little, though you can test his memory if you like.  He does not know how long he has been here--or even if he died in the last century.

I will be giving Vuz information ("memory recall") as he experiences familiar things and flashbacks, so he will be able to help guide you some, but not a lot.  His memory will recover a little at a time as he is exposed to familiar things.

Given the unknown length of his death, you probably already made an important connection in your minds.  Since all of you crossed over the time-space arch from Tienna to Allevia, and since Etag many years back reversed the Gate, the timeline that Vuz remembers may not be the timeline any of you know, and it probably will not match up with the timeline of the people you meet once you get out of here.

I remind you at this point of the posts from Etag found here:  link to a message in this game (up to message 32)

Healing Spells:
The Cure Light Wounds will heal 25% of recipient's original hit points (minimum 4, rounded down), the Cure Serious will heal 50% of Original (minimum 9, rounded down), and the Cure Critical heals 75% (minimum 18, rounded UP). The Heal spell stays the same, including all the disease and blindness healing, because it is basically a heal 100%.

The mirror is quite solid....but, the moment it is touched, it shimmers momentarily, and you feel the floor go our from underneath you.

Too late, you realize you have been duped into a trap.  The mirrors at your feet are a pit trap, and you find yourselves falling into darkness...

The fall is momentary, as you fall only about 20 feet, landing in soft sand that doesn't harm you physically.  But you do fall about waist deep, and you can feel the sand slowly shifting beneath you.  It takes only a moment to realize you have been caught in quicksand.

20 feet above you is nothing but a solid rock ceiling--the bottom of the mirror maze.  The area of the quicksand is about 50 feet square, but it is positioned in a circle, with the center of the circle of quicksand slightly lower (about 25 feet from the ceiling) than the side where you are at).  The flow of the quick sand is dragging you both down and slowly toward the center--like an hourglass.

There are two potential exits.  To your left, a passageway leads to darkness.  To your right, you see the gradual incline of the natural stairs you saw in the mirror, leading toward some sort of light in the distance.  There does not appear to be anything to latch onto.

OOC: I wish to cast a fly spell, but range is touch so if a strong member of the party is nearby I will cast it on them.  If not he will cast it on himself.

He wishes to make his way to the stairs with the light.  He will give aid either through his flight spell by carrying people and/or use of rope to allow others to drag themselves out of the sand.  (This would serve better if cast on another which he will do if he can)

As his hands are full and he has nothing that will be of any help Vuzyl waits to see if anyone else has anything that would get them out of here.

If they already have rope he will also tie a grappling hook onto it and throw it to the nearest ledge where a hook could stick. "Remember, don't struggle. Re: The Test of the Faithful - 5

OOC: You were all standing next to each other when you fell, so you are within touch distance.

Tahldar begins casting, reaching toward Borimer...

The rest of you try to limit your movement because you feel that every time you strain against the sand, it just makes your sinking go faster.

Kahan is pulling out the rope to toss over to Borimer.

Tahldar finishes the spell, and Borimer finds that he can fly.  Kahan also tosses a rope to him, which the one-handed warrior grabs.

Here is the spell description for the fly spell:
The subject can fly at a speed of 60 feet (or 40 feet if it wears medium or heavy armor, or if it carries a medium or heavy load). It can ascend at half speed and descend at double speed, and its maneuverability is good. Using a fly spell requires only as much concentration as walking, so the subject can attack or cast spells normally. The subject of a fly spell can charge but not run, and it cannot carry aloft more weight than its maximum load, plus any armor it wears.

Should the spell duration expire while the subject is still aloft, the magic fails slowly. The subject floats downward 60 feet per round for 1d6 rounds. If it reaches the ground in that amount of time, it lands safely. If not, it falls the rest of the distance, taking 1d6 points of damage per 10 feet of fall. Since dispelling a spell effectively ends it, the subject also descends in this way if the fly spell is dispelled, but not if it is negated by an antimagic field.

The exact duration of the spell is always unknown to the spellcaster, as the variable addition is determined secretly by the DM.

OOC: Sorry for the delays. I've been out of town more than in town over the last two weeks.

Borimer begins flying to the side with the stairs.  He has to swing-wrap the rope around his hand since he only has one at the moment.

Shae turns into an eagle and goes to the opposite side of the room with the door.  While doing so, she swoops down and is able to grab Leo and take him with her, dragging him atop the sand to the door.

As Shae and Leo reach the far doorway, the plank under Leo's feet goes down an inch.  You hear the expulsion of air and see that a sickly green mist or smoke is coming down the hall toward you...

Borimer is flinging the rope from side to side to get people to grab hold of it...

Lukas, Vuz, and Tahldar grab it.  Kahan is unable to because something wraps around his leg and begins dragging him under the sand and away from the rope...  (He is about 10 feet from the others.)

Shap also begins to panic and call out in pain.

Tahldar also cries out in alarm.

Borimer feels the rope become very tight as Tahldar is being pulled in the opposite direction by something under the sand.

ROUND 2
Shae grabs Leo and goes to the other side with him.

Tahldar reaches into the sand and casts a spell.

Vul grabs Tahldar to prevent him from being grabbed.

Tahldar's spell emits a shocking, electric jolt.  The thing holding his leg disengages.

Borimer continues pulling them, finding it easier to get them closer now.

Kahan sets down his shield horizontally and tries climbing on it like a sled.  It is a slow process but seems to be working.

Now it is Lukas' turn to cry out as something wraps around his leg.  (Lukas is also connected to the rope.)  Suddenly, the rope gets harder to pull once more, and Borimer is struggling.  Lukas still has the bow and grappling arrow in his free hand.  (He can wrap the rope being pulled by Borimer around one arm if he wants both hands free.)

Shap is still out in the middle.  She cries out in pain as something continues to gnaw at her.  (3 hp dmg.)  She is also sinking.  (4 rounds until under the sand.)

Now at the far side by Borimer, Shae sets Leo down.  She begins changing back to half-elf form.

The green smoky mist has now reached the entrance at the far side of the room and begins to seep into this large round room with the quicksand.

OOC: Sorry for the delays.  That's how crazy life has been.

You pull harder.  Whatever is down there suddenly lets go.  Borimer falls back.

Shae and Leo pull Didit to the 'shore' where the sand ends, and Kahan gets to the edge of the sand and the rock.

But the release was not a surrender.  Tentacles fly from the sand, and a large, crustacean head rises, sand falling all around.  Attached like barnacles or remora to the crustacean head are a hundred swarming beetles, giving the head an eerie appearance.  The beetles are not like the ones in the corridors above; these are black, the size of a fist, and have sharp pincer mouths.

About 20 beetles leap off the sand octopus to land around you.  The sand octopus continues to rise.  Its head alone is larger than a horse.  Its mouth faces upward and is filled with skewed, sharp teeth.  The mouth and head rotate down.  Its eyes are glazed over white as though with cataracts, but it senses you.

Eight long tentacles are coming in your direction...

Re: The Test of the Faithful - 5

The web spell goes out as everyone scrambles away from the sand pit.  Then Shae's wall of fire goes up, and the scent of grilled beetles reaches your ears.  You manage to shake off and crush the few remaining beetles on this side of the wall of fire.

You then proceed up the stairs just as the green mist is enveloping the room, and creature below.  As you reach the top, you are shaken by an explosion!  The wall of fire ignited the green gas, causing a huge explosion.  The giant creature was stuck in the web and sinks, alive but greatly shaken.

Your own eyes are slightly blinded by the light, and you feel the heat strike you from below.  Luckily, you were far enough away from the explosion, but the smell of sulfur reaches your ears.

The natural stairway eventually tapers off into a dimly lit room.  There in the center is another of those dragon altars.  In its maw rests a glowing violet gem.  You remember that you hold the purple gem from the other room and that in previous rooms you switched out the gems.

This room is octagonal in shape.  Its walls are covered in the metallic mirrors, as are its floor and ceiling.  Besides the tunnel you just came through (which we will deem "east"), there is another set of stairs leading up to the northwest and a passageway to the south that then curves sharply to the right.

Shae swaps the gem.

You hear a distant rumbling...

Then a rumbling in the wall to your left (west).  The wall begins to  move.

The western side of the wall tilts down, creating a ramp-like platform leading up into the darkness beyond.

Shae now has the violet gem that glows slightly.

You begin going up the ramp.  As soon as the person with the gem reaches the top, the ramp begins to raise back into the wall again.  The last few jump up and the ramp is gone.

You are now back in the hall of mirrors.  Behind you, there is no mirror, just a stone wall where the ramp used to be.

The mirrors (which are made of metal, I'll remind you) are everywhere.  They lead down a contorted passage to your left or right, turning about 10 feet.  You see your reflections manifested a hundredfold, and it appears that one mirror on your right which is set at an angle, reflects a distant mirror that has an orange frame around it.  There are no framed mirrors showing to your left.

Leaning against the wall that used to be a ramp he pulls off one of his boots and tips some errant grains onto the floor.

Also you have not really explained what you are doing here, swapping gems about in a place that is trying to kill you does not seem like an relaxing way to recover after escaping the destruction of your world so what's the story. How does that happen anyway, what could be powerful enough to kill a world?

From straight ahead, you hear a chittering and cackle, just like the one you heard before falling into the sand pit.  Because of the mirrors turning, though, you see nothing but your own reflection straight ahead.  The insectoid chitter picks up speed.  It seems to be coming toward you.

Re: The Test of the Faithful - 5

Shapfren casts fireball.  It doesn't go too far because the mirrors twist and turn throughout the maze.  But it goes far enough.  At first, you feel the heat from her fireball reach but not hurt you.  Then, there is a larger explosion as the green sulfurous smoke ignites.  Borimer's eyebrows are burnt off, and Shap has to cover her head.  The intense heat burns but does not damage anyone.

And they you stand and wait, the light from your magic crystal reflecting off the mirrors.

The clicking and insectoid noises stopped.  But now they start up again.  You see reflected in the mirrors what appears to be piles of dust, but looking closer, you see that they are piles of burnt insects.  What approaches seems to be a cloud of flying insects, a cloud so thick it is nearly solid.  It changes forms and coalesces, becoming more solid and then less solid.

It approaches, moving in what appears to be intelligence.  This is no normal swarm of insects.  Something seems to be in their center, something solid with two legs, but its form is obscured by the swarm of insects around it.  That is...

...that is, until an arm--a humanoid arm--comes out of the swarm and points in the mirrors toward you.  The arm is wrinkled and burnt and nearly skeletal.  Some powerful undead thing seems to be approaching you.  It does not talk, but it makes those strange insectoid clicking sounds.

It is about 30 feet from you (apparently), as it rounds the last corner of the mirrors.  The floor here is about 6 feet wide with a ceiling 12 feet above you (all covered in those metal mirrors).  You have very little fighting room.

Spell description:
When this spell is cast, the priest creates an invisible barrier to all sorts of insects, and normal insects do not approach within 10 feet of the caster while the spell is in effect. Giant insects with Hit Dice less than 1/3 of the caster's experience level are also repelled (for example, 2 Hit Dice for 7th- to 9th-level casters, 3 Hit Dice at 10th through 12th level, etc.). Insects with more Hit Dice can enter the protected area if the insect is especially aggressive and, in addition, rolls a successful saving throw vs. spell. Those that do sustain 1d6 points of damage from passing through the magical barrier. Note that the spell does not in any way affect arachnids, myriapods, and similar creatures--it affects only true insects.

You attack the bug enveloped undead creature en masse.

Kahan tries turning the creature, but it is not susceptible to his attempt.

Shae begins casting.  Tahldar begins casting.  Vuz begins moving behind the creature.

Shap and Lukas begin readying arrows.

Leo and Borimer attack.  They both score a hit, angering the creature and bellows in what cannot be described as anything other than a deafening clicking and high pitched scratchy squeak (like a fingernail down a blackboard).

Tahldar casts, further hurting the creature.  Shap and Lukas fire.  Both hit the creature with arrows, Lukas hitting twice while Shap hits only once.

Shae casts repel insects, and it has a profound effect.  The insects go flying, leaving you staring at an emaciated undead THING with bulging eyes, stringy hair, two long hands, and a bulging belly from which insects continually pour, as if through some magical portal.

It rushes Shae with clawed hands reaching...  Shae is hit and scratched by one of the claws.  (5 hp dmg.)  Shae feels a strange infection immediately eating away at her arm where it struck.  A rotting smell and dark putrefaction rises from her arm.  (Gangrene is now spreading up her arm and cannot be healed through normal healing.)

Your party has been spared by Shae's quick thinking from being attacked by the insects, but more of them pour from the creature.

(FYI, no critical hits on undead--Borimer.)

Vuz attacks from the rear, his short sword finding its mark.  (7 dmg.)

The creature is surrounded by you but is enraged.

You go after the strange undead bug emitting monster.

Borimer slashes, hitting the thing twice.

Its insects immediately fly to surround Borimer, engulfing his face and biting him.  (-4 hp; slow poison in face causing -1 hp per round until healed, blind fighting, and pain causing another -2 to the to hit scores.)

Shae casts a spell, and three of the insects grow to giant size, turning on the undead creature to attack it.

Kahan casts a spell, reaching out and touching Shae's arm.  The growth the disease and gangrene slows.  You are not sure if it will heal or not, but it stops expanding from her arm.

The thing slashes out with its claws at Kahan but one claw just gets his armor and the other misses.

Leo attacks but misses.  Vuz also strikes but misses, dropping one of his daggers in the process.  (1 is a critical miss.)

Tahldar casts another spell.  (3 hp damage.)

Lukas fires two arrows.  The second arrow finds its mark, embedding itself in the creature's skull.  (Critical hit.)  After all the damage taken by your group, including the initial fireball, the insect swarm spell, the damage from weapons and spells, and now the arrow, the creatures squeals in a deafening scream so loud your hands immediately cover your ears.  The bellow continues, a click and squeal and screech...and then you lose your hearing.  The creature then collapses to the floor, its body quickly being consumed by the insects that came out of it.  The blob is a mass of insects and bones.  It is regaining its strength but is currently incapacitated.

Your ears ring and then your hearing comes back.  You notice now that the mirror next to you shows that it leads into a dark corridor of rock.  To leave, you can go that way or follow the maze of mirrors back to the last intersection.

Grasping his remaining arm he adds "But a way out of this maze has opened up.  Follow my lead and lets get out here."

OOC: Talhdar will lead Borimer out the stone corrider.

"Yes, I think that would be wise", Leo adds as he follows the others out.

"The sooner we get away from this thing the better" Shapfren walked following Thaldar's lead and seeking to help guide Borimer. "How do you feel Shae? will you resist?"

Didit will also help guide Borimer.

Vuzyl picks up his dropped dagger and moves to follow the others.

How is the arm Shae? As soon as we are safe we should look into fixing it up, worst case I still have some Kashmandu Clerical Ointment, Dead Man's Glue, it may work to stabalise it until we can find someone who can fix it. Maybe the Cliarthur can help you as well if we can find them.

"I'm glad we won't have to go to Kashmandu to get more ointment. It really doesn't seem like a good place to go," the priest replies, looking at Shap's arm as they headed out.
