Josep Gavinho:
Joseph invites Hiro to a legendary monster hunt.

      Referee: Jayce
Participant 1: Hiro, Dwarf, Unchained Monk 11
Participant 2: Josep, Noble Drow, Sorcerer 11
          Map: random large
     Lighting: Standard
      Terrain: up to Jayce
        Walls: up to Jayce

I don't have any knowledge skills.
I don't expect details, but we should probably be able to tell whether it has wings or not, how many limbs it has, if it wears armour or weapons, if it looks old or young, what colours it sports... Does it looks like a ghost, a robot, or an elephant...

Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

Sorry guys, posting from my phone again... jayce, do you mind , taking care of maps ?

Josep saluted his friend and rival, then turned to the monster at the other side of the arena and a shiver ran along his spine.
The legendary monster was magnificent and everything he had hoped for -almost.

"I'm dashing forward, old chap, you better keep up! Aim for the knees, they look weak. Weaker than the rest, at least."

He clicked his heels to gain some speed, dashed towards the dragon and started casting spells.
One thing that Josep was known for was reliability. Tina would say predictability.

As always, he started firing nasty high-powered rays at his enemy.

   ROUND: 1 - (init21+)
POSITION: T1-> S10
ACTIONS: (free) click heels to activate boots of speed
(move) move to S10 and draw rod of Piercing
(swift) cast Quickened Piercing Scorching Ray
          (standard) cast Piercing Scorching Ray
          (free) grow claws

 HP: 99/99
 AC: 19; FFAC: 12; Touch: 17
CMD: 21; FFCMD: 15; FFTAC: 10

EFFECTS: haste 10/10
GEAR: Boots, Rod, Gloves, Shirt, Cloak, Championship Belt, 2x Potion, Backpack, belt pouch, dagger, sling, component pouch, spellbook. (-0 ACP, Light Load)
  USES: Spells: L5 0/5, L4 1/7, L3 0/7, L2 1/7, L1 0/8; Claws 1/11; Breath 0/1; Rod Piercing 2/3; Belt 0/1

DICE ROLLS:
SUMMARY: Josep clicks his heels, casts 2 spells and shoots Rays of Fire at the Dragon.  He also grew some claws.
The fiery magical Ray's pierce right through the dragon's natural resistance, ignore his tough hide entirely, and burn his flesh.
It looks like the monster would be able to withstand some more though... That's 150 fire damage, including the critical hit.

Yeah Hiro ! Unleash your fury on the dragon !

Jayce, I mistakenly rerolled damage for the critical hit (29 vs the 19 I originally rolled) the damage above doesn't include the reroll.

I for some reason put an S, where Josep is technically located. Ignore the J in top right corner.

Josep gets an AoO. Due to grapple.

Josep Gavinho rolled 23,3 using D20+6,d6+1 ( AoO vs Big Bad Bronze Wolf)
 That doesn't cut it, I reckon !

Josep Gavinho rolled 23 using D20+9 ( Fear DC 24)
Unless there's a circumstantial bonus I don't know about, Josep is shaken (as he well should be, grappled by a dragon on the edge of a cliff!)

17:19, Yesterday: Jayce the Tamer rolled 23 using 5d6 with rolls of 4,2,6,6,5.  Shaken duration .

You can roll your own 5d6 duration or go with the 23 rounds I've rolled. Whichever you prefer. Some people have natural luck and prefer their own rolls. Unless there was a rule that you must go with what I rolled.

Looks like you even know the right color. ;)

Re: Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

Josep was in a dire situation, caught off guard and now prisoner between the dragon's powerful claws...
"Take your time, Hiro ! It's not like we're on a clock or anything." He mumbled as he tried to jiggle free.
Too late did he realise that he actually couldn't cast spells whilst grappled by the formidable creature !

   ROUND: 2 - (init21+)
POSITION:  S10
 ACTIONS: (free) speak
          (swift) cast Quickened Vanish
          (standard) cast Dimension Door

 HP: 99/99
 AC: 19; FFAC: 12; Touch: 17
CMD: 21; FFCMD: 15; FFTAC: 10

EFFECTS: haste 9/10, grappled.
GEAR: Boots, Rod, Gloves, Shirt, Cloak, Championship Belt, 2x Potion, Backpack, belt pouch, dagger, sling, component pouch, spellbook. (-0 ACP, Light Load)
  USES: Spells: L5 1/5, L4 2/7, L3 0/7, L2 1/7, L1 0/8; Claws 1/11; Breath 0/1; Rod Piercing 2/3; Belt 0/1

DICE ROLLS:
Josep Gavinho rolled 34 using 1d20+16 with rolls of 18.  Concentration: quickened vanish
Josep Gavinho rolled 35 using 1d20+16 with rolls of 19.  Concentration: dimension door
SUMMARY: Josep does a great job of keeping his concentration, despite being shaken and grappled by a bronze dragon.
He only then realises that he couldn't succeed in the check, even on a natural 20.
So that was pointless ! I don't suppose you would let me change my standard action? Josep would probably have figured out after his first spell that the DC was too high... well, it doesn't cost anything to ask, right?

Hiro, please make one check from last round and once from current. Please label as well, as if you pass the first one, you are immune to second. Sorry Josep, no can do. Please don't hurt Jayce too terribly much in future matches. :(

I went back and checked your matches and you're a very forgiving player in accordance with rules(real Pathfinder and Arena house rules). But in this instance, Taking your turn back isn't a fair move. Nor would I ask for a turn back.

OOps. forgot to add the tail damage. Man that's insane.

19:45, Today: Jayce the Tamer rolled 31,32,21,32 using d20+19,2d6+23,d20+19,2d6+23 with rolls of 12,3,6,2,3,6.  corrected roll for seriously bad tail dice.

OK:

Checking the rolls(hard to see with all of them), full attack was bite, claw, claw, wing, wing and rolled tail separately. Tail was listed as an attack but I rerolled attack and damage since the damage die was skewed. Since I messed up the roll. The AoO tail slap had a lower damage, you can keep the lower damage if you like.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestia...rightful-Presence-Ex-

Frightful Presence (Ex):
This special quality makes a creature’s very presence unsettling to foes. Activating this ability is a free action that is usually part of an attack or charge. Opponents within range who witness the action may become frightened or shaken. The range is usually 30 feet, and the duration is usually 5d6 rounds. This ability affects only opponents with fewer Hit Dice than the creature has. An opponent can resist the effects with a successful Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the frightful creature’s racial HD + the frightful creature’s Cha modifier; the exact DC is given in the creature’s descriptive text). An opponent that succeeds on the saving throw is immune to that same creature’s frightful presence for 24 hours. On a failed save, the opponent is shaken, or panicked if it has 4 Hit Dice or fewer. Frightful presence is a mind-affecting fear effect.

Format: frightful presence (60 ft., DC 21); Location: Aura.

You could be right, maybe. It could also be that continued failed saves just increases duration. Or, restarts an active duration. Either way, because of the clause, a failed save would then mean that you are not immune to its frightful presence. Continuing on:

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamema...l-abilities#TOC-Fear

Fear:
Spells, magic items, and certain monsters can affect characters with fear. In most cases, the character makes a Will saving throw to resist this effect, and a failed roll means that the character is shaken, frightened, or panicked.

Shaken: Characters who are shaken take a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.

Frightened: Characters who are frightened are shaken, and in addition they flee from the source of their fear as quickly as they can. They can choose the paths of their flight. Other than that stipulation, once they are out of sight (or hearing) of the source of their fear, they can act as they want. If the duration of their fear continues, however, characters can be forced to flee if the source of their fear presents itself again. Characters unable to flee can fight (though they are still shaken).

Panicked: Characters who are panicked are shaken, and they run away from the source of their fear as quickly as they can, dropping whatever they are holding. Other than running away from the source, their paths are random. They flee from all other dangers that confront them rather than facing those dangers. Once they are out of sight (or hearing) of any source of danger, they can act as they want. Panicked characters cower if they are prevented from fleeing.

Becoming Even More Fearful: Fear effects are cumulative. A shaken character who is made shaken again becomes frightened, and a shaken character who is made frightened becomes panicked instead. A frightened character who is made shaken or frightened becomes panicked instead.

So, unless GM Arkrim states otherwise, I'm continuing on as such. Key note, as per house rules, Hiro will get a save every round to end Frightened or Panicked. As per:

ARENA IMMUNITIES:
Several special immunities are granted while you have 50% or more of your current max HP:
You can't be compelled to forfeit or commit suicide.
Auto-kill effects (such as quivering palm or circle of death) deal 1d6 damage per CL/HD instead of auto-killing on a failed save (plus whatever they do on a passed save).
Ability/level damage/drain can't drop a score/level below 1.
While affected by a disabling effect, you roll another saving throw every round at the end of your turn to determine if you are affected for another round (think Hold Person). A single success ends the effect. A "disabling" effect is anything that causes the target to be unable to take their normal actions (confused, dazed, dominated, frightened, nauseated, paralyzed, staggered, stunned, panicked, unconscious). A successful saving throw ends the effect but doesn't stop you from being affected again by the same effect later nor does it heal damage taken from the effect (unless noted otherwise). If the effect already grants a saving throw to end every round, this doesn't stack with it (take whichever is better).
*You do not gain these immunities against foes with a CR that's 4 or more points above yours.
*Arena Immunities can be turned OFF in PvP matches if all players agree to it.
*Accumulating nonlethal damage effectively lowers your HP for these calculation purposes.

If you have supporting evidence to the contrary, you are free to present it. As of now, I believe I am doing the correct thing. But I am not a GM, I am just a ref.

So, as of now, Hiro makes two saves. One from previous turn he forgot to roll, and one from just now.

Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

Well Josep is dead so the point is moot for him.

If Hiro makes the first save, he becomes henceforth immune.
If he fails it, I agree that he needs to save again every turn, and with every fail the fear effect gets worse.
If he succeeds on one of these saves, he keeps the last active fear condition and is immune to further feat effects.

  That's what you mean, right?

Correct, the range is 210 ft. I linked the frightful presence ability just to explain it. For True Dragons, it is 30 ft per age category.

Correct in the order of operations.

Dimension Door:
You instantly transfer yourself from your current location to any other spot within range. You always arrive at exactly the spot desired - whether by simply visualizing the area or by stating direction. After using this spell, you can't take any other actions until your next turn.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classe...TOC-Abundant-Step-Su-
Abundant Step (Su):
At 12th level or higher, a monk can slip magically between spaces, as if using the spell dimension door. Using this ability is a move action that consumes 2 points from his ki pool. His caster level for this effect is equal to his monk level. He cannot take other creatures with him when he uses this ability.

As of now, you used  hero point and lost your turn. There is a feat chain to do that very thing though. As much as it may not seem like it, I do want you two to win. :) I am pretty sure I get the same xp no matter the outcome.

If there are no disputes, I will allow you to save your hero point and use your move action. I will not allow a change to your action line in type of action or order. As I denied Josep to do so. And it would not be fair to allow you a change and not him.

I feel saving the hero point is fair because all actions stop after the abundant step anyway.

Hmm. I assumed that since hero point actions fell outside of normal initiative it wouldn't be affected by that...

if that's NOT the case (and I'm willing to let Arkrim make a ruling) then I would just move to the same spot normally (I abundant stepped to avoid any AOO's).

Can we shift my movement type to a normal move and proceed as normal with AOO's added in?

Re: Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

In reply to Hiro (msg # 44):

You did not label the action to verify act out of turn or add extra action.
Since it was in your turn, I viewed it as extra action.

If you used it to act out of turn, it would be a readied action and change initiative, as such you would not use the rest of your turn.

But a move action abundant step turn end, hero point readied action attack(standard) would net you one attack. Which, you rolled 26 and that missed.

OK. We will let Arkrim make the call.

I would not allow you to change your action as I did not allow Josep to change his action. GM Arkrim can let you do anything as his word supercedes mine.

You may follow normal protocol for summoning GM Arkrim to intervene.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamema...er-rules/hero-points
Act Out of Turn: You can spend a hero point to take your turn immediately. Treat this as a readied action, moving your initiative to just before the currently acting creature. You may only take a move or a standard action on this turn

Extra Action: You can spend a hero point on your turn to gain an additional standard or move action this turn.

Re: Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

Play by play of turns:

Mage armor
Heroism
Dispel magic(don't actually care if it works)
Shield
Mirror image
Dispel magic(don't actually Carr if it works)
Blur
Engage Hiro.

Do you have anything you can do to prevent these actions? If not, I will fast forward to this point. Instead of wasting time with all those posts.

I know when GM Arkrim plays stalling does not apply. But I am not him so thus the dispels. Let me know.

Hiro, can't you throw something at the dragon?
And/or charge through a jump?
If only for honour :)

Let me know if I'm being too harsh. I can't tell. I'm supposed to play at a medium level. Not too easy but not too hard. As per monster hunt ref rules.

But we're all game breaking maniacs and you two are top dogs.

I'll change my actions if you think so.

Re: Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

After the first Heroism the dragon is officially guilty of stalling :)

STALLING
During a match, players must attempt to attack an enemy or buff/summon an ally that is attacking by using an effect that has limited uses per day every 3 rounds (see the Invisibility spell for what constitutes an attack).
If you are incapable of doing either of these things, attempting to do so with at least a move action counts (such as a Perception check made as a move action to find a hidden opponent). Stalling counts as a foul.
Match special terms can alter the time frames for posting and stalling if desired.

It has to attack at least every third turn.

In reply to Hiro (msg # 53):

Dispel magic is an attack as per:

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/...pells/i/invisibility
invisibility:
For purposes of this spell, an attack includes any spell targeting a foe or whose area or effect includes a foe. Exactly who is a foe depends on the invisible character's perceptions.

And

link to a message in this game

Prep Round (optional):
As an optional extra, you can add prep rounds before combat begins. You cannot attack, charge, run, teleport or ready an action during a prep round. See the Invisibility spell description for what constitutes an "attack."

And the rule you quoted.

And remember my previous round was a dispel magic. So I am starting fresh. All actions are in accordance with rules.

Yes, you're right, it certainly looks like it's technically legal.

Does it make sense that a dragon is behaving this way? Not in the slightest. I think you're thinking like a PC and not like a monster... but:

Re: Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

That is why I originally wanted a ref and a player for the dragon.
No problem though, let's keep things moving.

I think we expected more of a show... You are, as Hiro pointed out, technically right.
This being said, the monster hunts used to have different rules for stalling, whereby simply remaining out of reach for more than a round constituted stalling, I can't find the reference right now.

I also remember a fight where Hiro, having won on a technicality against a vicious dinosaur, conceded because that is how he rules.

Casting innocuous spells to work around the stalling rules seems like a cheap trick, one a legendary challenge monster should not have to resort to.
The dragon will probably shred Hiro to pieces anyway, even without seven buff spells...
Feel free to rule however you see fit, you're still the ref, but I think there's a higher road somewhere out there.

Also, our own fault for being too cocky, Hiro! Next time I won't skip buffing...

This is not a debate about the why a dragon, not just any monster, should act. I can already tell we three disagree about how a dragon, a creature of intelligence and legendary renown throughout the 7 inner seas, SHOULD or WOULD act. It isn't a brute. It is able to analyze it's situation and understand tactics. They make it to be 1,200 plus years old for a reason.
We can debate that topic in the OOC. I shall turn it down a notch and engage.

Same effects overlap not stack. Unless the source specifically says otherwise(such as dodge). However, the highest effect applies. Such as wearing armor +4 armor bonus or bracers of armor +8. The +8 would apply. Likewise, the higher roll would apply. You can double check them. For now I took 73 damage. I would probably put it as 2d6, or whatever it is, drop lowest.

I believe I could have taken an AoO. It is extensive research. But the findings seem to align. I would like your input first before just doing so. My findings are listed below.

<quote Flying Kick>

The monk leaps through the air to strike a foe with a kick. Before the attack, the monk can move a distance equal to his fast movement bonus. This movement is made as part of the monk's flurry of blows attack and does not require an additional action. At the end of this movement, the monk must make an attack against an adjacent foe. This movement may be between attacks. This movement provokes an attack of opportunity as normal. The attack made after the movement must be a kick.

Take 5-Foot Step:
You can move 5 feet in any round when you don't perform any other kind of movement. Taking this 5-foot step never provokes an attack of opportunity. You can't take more than one 5-foot step in a round, and you can't take a 5-foot step in the same round that you move any distance.

You can take a 5-foot step before, during, or after your other actions in the round.

You can only take a 5-foot-step if your movement isn't hampered by difficult terrain or darkness. Any creature with a speed of 5 feet or less can't take a 5-foot step, since moving even 5 feet requires a move action for such a slow creature.

You may not take a 5-foot step using a form of movement for which you do not have a listed speed.

Provoking an Attack of Opportunity:
Two kinds of actions can provoke attacks of opportunity: moving out of a threatened square and performing certain actions within a threatened square.

Moving

Moving out of a threatened square usually provokes attacks of opportunity from threatening opponents. There are two common methods of avoiding such an attack—the 5-foot step and the withdraw action.

Re: Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

If you double check, I power attacked Josep last time. I just swung at you this time. The dragon's bite has a 15ft reach and you were less than that away. and the dragon, "I believe," is ten feet tall. (half long rule or whatever). Which is why I didn't account for cover in the roll. But even with cover, it reached. If there is anymore confusion, please don't hesitate to hit me up.

And thank you for catching that, it should have been +26. ;) (Dragon's bab is so high, I have to subtract 5 when power attacking. Which is why josep's damage rolls had +10 more damage per attack than against you.)

Re: Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

34 damage. Sorry, third one missed. My mistake. That also means, I was mentally adding the Higher ground but I never actually added it. How about that. Not that it mattered in Josep's case.

In reply to Jayce the Tamer:
Just to be clear, I didn't mean that the dragon should not buff or generally not use his magic. Mirror image or
Blur are great options!

The use of dispel magic to get additional prep rounds however, that was a stretch.

Don't feel like what you're doing is taking it down a notch, just like it wouldn't be taking down a notch to not fly if the monster had been a Dinosaur for example. Just playing along the rules for Monsters vs Players.

In reply to Josep Gavinho (msg # 68):

Please put these comments in the OOC. :) That way, players can talk about fairness(as a whole) as opposed to filling the match with banter.

Also, Hiro, please out round 6. That's the rrond we are on.

OOC: So the thing I didn't remember until just now is that cover meant NO attack of opportunity...

You can't execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with cover relative to you.
I definitely had cover while in that square (the only way for me NOT to have cover is if it had been directly over me)... so I dropped that initial 18 damage. Let me know if you disagree.

Just take 35 damage. The third attack missed last time. I have no rebuttal against aoo with cover save what I said already. Your argument stands.

Re: Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

I thought this from the get go. How I would counter the dragon with both parties still up. Since Josep went first, I would have spoken to Hiro free cast fly or dimension door standard and move to Hiro's starting square. Hiro could have used a hero point and moved to C3+6 to act before the dragon. And any free and one swift that he likes.

The dragon would have to either use spells, fight Hiro or take full attacks from Hiro while full attacking Josep. This would have been the optimal positioning in my opinion. The dragon, as Josep researched, has only a 15ft reach with its bite and 10 for everything else. Meaning being at +4, while Hiro is at +6 Hiro would threaten the dragon from any possible angle to melee Josep. That would have won against the dragon, in my opinion, and with relative ease.

If no disputes:

LoserTeamTotal #BP * 90 = LoseX / (# of losers) = LoseXPot
1) LoseXPot / Winner 1 #BP = Total Rewards for Winner 1. (1/2 this is max reward for referee)
2) LoseXPot / Winner 2 #BP = Total Rewards for Winner 2. (1/2 this is max reward for referee)

WinnerTeamTotal #BP * 30 = WinX / (# of winners) = WinXPot
1) WinXPot / Loser 1 #BP = Total Rewards for Loser 1. (1/2 this is min reward for referee)
2) WinXPot / Loser 2 #BP = Total Rewards for Loser 2. (1/2 this is min reward for referee)

converts to

(Josep + Hiro BP = 3377) * 90 = 303930 / (2) = 151965
1) 151965 / Dragon's BP (1850) = 82 BP. (1/2 this is max reward for referee)

Dragon's BP (1850) * 30 = 55500 / (1) = 55500
1) 55500 / Josep 1366 BP = 40 BP. (1/2 this is min reward for referee)
2) 55500 / Hiro 2011 = 27.598 = 28(round up?) BP. (1/2 this is min reward for referee)

Final rewards:

Josep 40 no consumables
Hiro 28 ~ 27.598 used one hero point and one potion of fly.
Jayce 41 one foul from misuse of dice roller.

Re: Monster Hunt #16: Hiro & Josep vs. ???

 Strategy-wise, I've been careless.
I thought Hiro would be able to reach the dragon in the first round, I didn't realise he would be stuck behind...
Good old mirror image could have helped, too.
Also, once the dragon had Josep grappled, I pribably shouldn't have tried an impossible concentration check... I didn't realise the DC was soooo high.
