Groppo takes a step forward and notices some sort of pillar - sticking out of the sludge right in front of him and covering his view of the monster. Hearing the monster eat away at the ground, he picks up a flask and chugs it, then begins inspecting his immediate surroundings - making sure not to get surprised by any more pillars, stairs or ledges. "Hrmf..." he says, and makes a few jumps on the spot, warming up his muscles for the battle to come.

Latro raises an eyebrow at the creature as it begins eating the bridge.
"It's trying to limit our options of approach." Latro shouts. "Make haste in ascending the tower before all our avenues are lost."
Moving firmly down the bridge to the south, Latro draws his sword as he moves but takes no perceivable action thereafter.
Tiaca on the other hand, moves across the bridge to the east, unpacking a scroll from her scroll case as she moves, and raises her hand toward the creature.
"Don't you know you shouldn't eat your meal, raw? Let me heat it up for you!"
From her outstretched had come two rays of scorching fire that swirl and intermingle before striking the creature simultaneously.

OOC: Go team! I think this thing may in fact be a gargoyle of some kind but don't quote me on it. It's just a guess.
Also, can we see if it has wings or not? Or is a description like that limited to a successful knowledge check?

The strange creature hisses at the ray, eyeing the creatures below, but continues its task as the blast barely seemed to phase it at all. It's stone flesh almost seems to pulse and ripple as it eats more and more stone.

Groppo, still holding that flask he just emptied, walks downstairs and stops only when he's right next to the sludge. Bending down, he - using his armored gauntlet and the flask itself - fills up the flask with sludge, grimacing as it burns him slightly.

Latro continues his trek up the stairs, drawing a potion as he goes. Curiously, he does not drink it just yet though his sword continues to produce ominous sounds.
Tiaca has a palpable look of displeasure on her face as her rays don't seem to do very much at all. She moves herself to the northern stair to gain a better vantage point.
"Fire not your thing, big boy?" She says as her hand crackles with energy. "Then perhaps a bit of lighting is more to your tastes!"
From her hand surges a bolt of lighting that zooms up the stairs and washes over the creature.

Assuming no Electricity Resistance (which, lets be real, it probably has) Tiaca deals 36 Electricity Damage to the monster. It must succeed a DC17 Reflex save to half the damage to 18. either way, resistance happens after the reflex save, should it have it.

The monster seems annoyed but unconcerned with the spell slinging as it continues to eat stone with ravenous hunger...

Groppo pushes off from the ground, and flies towards the monster - landing close to the central platform on one of the bridges. He looks for Boadicea, and can barely see her, far away behind pillars and the platform. He looks for Latro, and sees the mighty warrior walking up the stairs on one of the other bridges. "Well, it looks like I do not have to be the first one up there..." he mumbles to himself, holding the flask ready to throw.

OCC: I believe I'm flying in a way simple enough to avoid rolling any checks, but it's honestly my first time flying if we don't count airplanes, so it's kind of exciting!
Rules question - ref ruling not necessary
From Fly-spell: "The subject can fly at a speed of 60 feet (or 40 feet if it wears medium or heavy armor, or if it carries a medium or heavy load)."
It does not say that speed reduction from these sources apply to fly movement speed, but it references things that do already reduce your speed. If I have full movement speed in spite of wearing a heavy armor, do I get the 60ft fly speed? I used 40 this round,
 and might not get another chance for 60, but maybe...

Tiaca is notably frustrated at her spells' relative ineffectuality. "Seriously?" she blurts, throwing her hands up in the air. "Fine! Let's see you dodge two in a row!" She lets loose yet another lightingbolt in anger. Popping open the lid on her scroll case once more, she moves off the stairs to make way for the incoming Boadecia as she pulls yet another scroll from its confines. Avicularia audibly growls at her as a warning not to try anything as she heads up the stairs.
Meanwhile, Latro mutters a dark incantation while placing his forehead to his blade. Raising it high, a bolt of red lighting strikes it from nowhere and the sword begins to glow ominously.
"Kill them all, my servant." The sword growls, now filled with life. "Slay them all, as your goddess demands."
"In due time, Bloodrender." Latro responds "The creature shall die first, and then the rest shall fall to our might. I am uncertain my power alone can slay a beast so strong as to shrug off Tiaca's magic so effortlessly."

Also, FYI, Groppo, for future reference, please declare your up and down movement (how much was used to move up and down). Otherwise, there's no way to know if your movement is legal or not unless you move only half as far as possible or less.

The creature roars angrily at the blasts and moves away from its attacker just as it finishes tearing the bridge apart leaving only a hanging stairway to no where. It sees Latro standing close and begins to growl, staring him down.

A creature would need to achieve a standing jump 5 feet up, 5 feet across to traverse the hole (DC20 Acrobatics)

Groppo, now close to the creature, lobs his flask of sludge through the air! He aims between the feet of the monster, but it proves to be impossible to hit there. Luckily, the flask hits the monster anyway, and the sludge drips all over. Seeing the flask hit, he moves up, grabbing his weapon.

Tiaca cackles as her Lighting bolt finally strikes true against the creature. However the creature destroys the bridge in a rage giving her no other real option that to travel around the edge of the arena looking for a new way to strike.
Latro stores his potion back in his belt pouch and uses his free hand to cast a spell, bringing into existence two daggers made of force that swirl around him. He then calls upon the might of his goddess to help him smite this unruly foe, vowing in her name to bring this creature to its end. Regardless of if he gains this grace or not, this is a promise he vows to uphold.

The acidic sludge itself doesn't seem to have any effect on the monster, but it's greasy substance sends the monster slipping. It manages to grab the ledge, pull itself back up and steps over the grease back into a steady position. Groppo's strategy almost worked and the creature looks displeased...

Groppo makes a mighty swing with the blunt side of his hooked hammer, missing the creature. Seeing that the creature is hard to hit, he takes a wide stance before attacking the creature with more control: swinging the blunt and piercing side of the hammer one after the other, from the left, right, up and down. Only one of the attacks hit, and not a very strong one either. "We're going to need to work hard on this guy!"

Seeing an opportune moment, Latro swings his foul blade at the creature, attempting to strike it while it pulls itself back up onto the platform.


06:52, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 27 using 1d20+18 with rolls of 9.  AoO vs creature.

AoO Summery:
Giving the creature any benefit of it's position, implying that it might have cover from latro where it is, latro still manages to hit the creature because it is climbing (losing any dex bonus to AC per climbing rules) and because it is prone (per map rules) which cancels out a possible cover bonus.

Latro hits the prone climbing creature for 13 damage, not accounting for any DR. Latro may have just created an alternant timeline wherein the creature fails its climb check to not fall into the deadly goop below. DC is 15 + 1/2 damage dealt per arena rules. I have no idea if Groppo's AoOs count towards this or not but if they do, thats swell as all getout!


Should this result in a new series of events it may in fact be Groppo's turn again because a falling creature sorta invalidates his actions.
I'll be preparing my next turn on the assumption the creature was able to succeed its climb check to not fall and prevent myself from getting a good old fashion 48 hour time out.

GM akrim, i await your climb check (or complete overrule of alternant timeline theories. :P)

OOC: This post assumes the creature was able to succeed in a climb check to avoid falling when struck by Latro's attack. Should it have actually failed it's climb check, Latro's actions will have changed dramatically. This post is merely to avoid a 48 hour rule call and to expedite the process should the creature end up passing it's climb check.

The creature wasn't everything it was cracked up to be. Sure it was strong, yes it had an overwhelming hide to strike through as well as multiple elemental resistnaces, but with the power of his goddess and the might of his demonic weapon, Latro was certain he would be able to overcome this creature and the other two gladiators as well.
He just needed more time and that was something the arena was not kind in handing out. Tiaca bought him some critical time and allowed him to enchant himself as much as possible. But time was drawing close.
Calling upon a cloudy spirit to aid him, the new manifestation floats whimsically around Latro's Falcata. Taking a few steps forward, latro draws his previously stored potion and quickly drinks it.

"Fight hard, my master!" tiaca calls as she continues to circle the pillar via the bridges. "I will be at your aid soon!"

So that nobody forgets:

CLIFFHANGER: The floor is DEATH edition!

MONSTROUS BATTLE ROYAL: 3-4 heroes fight a monster, then fight each other to the death. Be careful. Your allies might betray you early and let the beast eat you. Trust no one! Rewards are separate for monster and battle royal so it is a feast of rewards win or lose. Have fun!

Use your FULL BP. No mythic. Monster starts in the middle, everyone else picks a corner.

FLOOR: The floor is 10-foot deep heated acidic poisonous sludge water dealing 2d6 fire and 2d6 acid damage per round of submersion and requiring a DC15 Fortitude save each round or be nauseated until the start of next turn. The nausea is a poison effect. The liquid is also foggy as if by Obscuring Mist. Anything below +2 on the map is submerged. The base Swim DC to maneuver in it is 10. Once damaged by the sludge, you deal an additional +1d6 acid and +1d6 fire damage with your first melee attack against a target that has not been damaged by the sludge. This doesn't stack if your weapon already deals acid and/or fire damage. Nonmagical items and ammo are instantly destroyed if they fall into the sludge and aren't currently being wielded or worn by a creature. Thus, firing arrows at creatures in the sludge is useless if they are beneath the surface.

SLIPPERY LEDGES: Failing a Climb or Acrobatics check or falling prone while adjacent to a ledge or cliff in this match automatically throws you over the edge! However, a DC15 Reflex saving throw (free action) allows you to catch a ledge and dangle (prone). However, failing a check while already prone = falling over the edge into the toxic sludge.

SLUDGE: Anyone adjacent to the sludge can pick up a glob of it and lob it like a thrown weapon. It creates the effects of the grease spell wherever it is thrown (DC to resist = 10+1/2lvl+dex mod of thrower) but also deals 1 acid and fire damage to a target caught in its area upon casting, but not thereafter (grease itself lasts the rest of the battle). Of course, picking it up deals 1 fire and acid damage to the person doing so and vanishes after 1 round unless it is put in a flask. 1 flask holds 1 charge.

FLOOR KILL: If you kill a foe by knocking them over the edge into the death sludge (they drop to 0 or lower in the sludge before escaping) you immediately gain their special maneuver for the rest of the battle (and thus, can take 2 special maneuvers each round, see below). Shooting someone out of the sky works too (remember, a DC15 + half damage dealt fly check is needed each time you are damaged while flying to avoid falling).

SPECIAL MAP MANEUVERS: Once per round, you can make any of the following special maneuvers:
  • Make a combat maneuver without provoking an attack of opportunity.
  • Trade an attack from your full attack action for an extra 5-foot step (doesn't count against your normal movement limit).
  • Trade an attack from your full attack action to cast a spell with a spell level no greater than 1/5 your base attack bonus (so if you had +15/+10/+5, and sacrificed your +5 attack the spell level would be maxed at 1st level but if you gave up your +15 you could cast a 3rd level spell instead).
  • Cast two spells at once as a full-round action (two standard actions or less) but become stunned until the end of your next turn.
  • Take a 5-foot step as an immediate action.
  • Move half your speed as an immediate action but then fall prone.
  • Gain +1d10 bonus to AC, CMD, and all saving throws until start of next turn as an immediate action.
  • Add 1d6 to a d20 roll you make and treat your roll as the new number. This can negate the "nat 1 autofail" but can't create the "nat 20 autosuccess".
  • Heal 1d6 hp/2 levels as a standard action.
Once you make a special maneuver, you can't do so again until the start of your next turn. If you have a special feat or trait that already allows you to do any of these things, those uses don't count against these ones. Minions can't use special maneuvers.

The sound of scraping stone and the clanking of metallic weapons upon it echo as Latro and Groppo take swings at the creature...to little effect. It's skin is so hard that neither seem to harm it at all despite the multitude of swings. It appears, the creature is not as easily harmed as something made of flesh and blood...

Groppo stares at the shield as it flies towards Latro, then the monster attacks. He manages to evade part of the assault, but the monster pierces his tough metal armor while simultaneously grabbing hold of him. Groppo swiftly drops his weapon, and directs his full attention towards wrestling with the much-too-large monster, failing to do so. "Nnraah! You two stop that, get on this guy right here!" he yells toward the west bridge.

Latro glares towards the woman. "You will know endless torment for your betrayal once the creature is vanquished." Latro growls. Moving with great haste over the puddle and behind the grappling creature, Latro swings his blade back as far as he can manage and throws all his power into the attack that he can muster. Guided by his summoned spirit, Latro's attack manages to pierce through the creature's hide. Unfortunately, it's natural bulk made Latro's attack mostly ineffective but that didn't stop him from channeling his touch of corruption through his blade and get some extra damage in and hopefully stun the creature long enough to allow groppo to escape the attack.

Latro's minion climbs the south stairs ready to continue laying fire waste to the monster.

OOC: Latro can actually hit this thing at a reasonable rate with all these buffs he's got going. That's actually insane.
 also, seriously, immunity to will saves? That's preposterous. No way its immune to will saves. what kind of thing is this?..

A wicked smile crosses Boadicea's face in return to Latro's glare.  She charges down the west side of the arena and hurls her shield yet again this time taking the legs out from under poor Tiaca.
