Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

Josep Gavinho:
Sorry, I just realised that the DC to break the grapple is 29, not 39.

Yeah, i was about to say, i thought that was a little high. :P

So anyways, the other thing i was going to say was:

08:27, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 36 using 1d20+21 with rolls of 15.  Latro spell Craft check to identify spell.
08:30, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 17 using 1d20+13 with rolls of 4.  Tiaca spellcraft to identify spell.
08:30, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 20 using 1d20+9 with rolls of 11.  Avi spellcraft to identify spell.

Do i know what you're doing with that unnamed spell?

quote:
Identify a spell as it is being cast: 15 + spell level + 1/10 ft Distance

(just for reference, Latro can currently identify a lvl 9 spell from 120 feet away with the check he made so i think i know what you just cast.)

Edit: also, wouldn't the black tentacles need to roll vs 50% concealment? They don't have dark vision after all and they are making an attack roll in the form of a CMB grapple roll against something the one that summoned it cannot accurately see.

Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

You identify the spell as a Wall of Force.

Black Tentacles automatically grapple anyone in the area, they don’t roll for an attack in the first place and they don’t rely on sight to initiate grapple.

Interesting. ok so

Tiaca has True Seeing right now. That means she can see the wall, correct?

Josep Gavinho:

Automatically is a pretty strong word there. The tentacles do target everything in their area with a combat maneuver but they still have to roll to see if they grapple anything. And aren't combat maneuver checks attack rolls?

quote:
When you attempt to perform a combat maneuver, make an attack roll and add your CMB in place of your normal attack bonus.

Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

I’ll leave it for Brakt to decide on both accounts.
I don’t think True Seeing reveals anything, hence I didn’t make it open information.
Black Tentacles only roll for grapple check, not the attack roll that usually precedes a grapple check. Grapple checks are not subject to concealment as far as I know. And the tentacles don’t have eyes to begin with, they don’t know whether it’s dark or not.

Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

Ruling on Tentacles: Spell doesn't rely on sight to grapple, hence no concealment check needed.

Ruling on Wall: Wall is invisible as made of pure force, and not due to magic. As such, Wall isn't seen by true sight. Since Latro knows the wall has been cast, he can use a free perception check to locate the wall at DC20.  Alternatively, he can act as normal and be advised after completing his turn if affected by the wall.

Latro, between your check and your entourage’s I can’t imagine you ll fail the DC20, so here goes:
Wall of Force stretches from A4 to J4, and you can tell it doesn’t go all the way to the ceiling of the arena.

Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

Afflicted with the curse of his oracle's nature, Latro decides the best corse of action at this point is to assume a completely defensive stance.

Tiaca was suddenly alone and not covered by her master's darkness. An invisible wall had appeared blocking the blanket of darkness from reaching her. She was trapped with the champion and Latro could not save her.
She started hyperventilating.
'It's fine. It's ok. I can handle myself. This is for my lord. He will smile upon me for my efforts.'
She regains a cool head looks toward Josep. "Hear me now, guildmaster. I am Aurantiaca, personal bodyguard and handmaiden to the mighty Latro Dectus. I may fall this day, but your tricks do not deceive these eyes of mine. You will know suffering at the behest of my master. Your pain shall herald him and you will fall to his might."
She draws a scroll from her pouch and waits.

Latro, I understand that your darkness aura doesn't extend beyond the wall (which incidentally makes the position of the wall very obvious now!)
Could you clarify what items and active spells are now visible on Tiaca?

I should also note that Tiaca has no move action listed, and nothing saying she drew a scroll, I hope that is correct cause I'm not really inclined to say I'll let you retcon that.

Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

Seeing as there are readied actions, I'll post my round in bits. Please bear with me...

Josep hears the maiden and has to admit her dedication is impressive.
"Very well, miss Aurantiaca. Let's take care of you first then..."
"But why master ?! Let's focus on Latro..." objected the dodo.
"Uh, you can speak? I want Latro to see what's coming for him, and what happens to his dear servant. We can't see him, behind that wall, but he can see us."

Josep drops his scroll to draw a rod, and casts a spell, quickly so.

Before i decide to take my readied action, I'm going to ask you to re-roll the black tentacles grapple check because as it stands, it should be getting a +5 to maintain the grapple at that is not represented in it's grapple roll.

I'm not going to try and foul you for something like that. But i'll take my chances in having you re-roll it's attack in the hopes that it is too low to maintain the grapple. ;)

I'll be back on in 12 or so hours. Time to go sell my soul to Amazon.

I will take that shit and run with it.
Best part is Josep doesn't even know. technically speaking. :P

Now for the other part

Readied Action: If Josep Casts a spell of any kind, Cast Reach (Long) Scorching Ray.

As soon as the makings of an utterance leave Josep's mouth, Tiaca is ready. She had been murmuring the words to her own spell underneath her breath and in an instant, she responded. From her hands flew two rays of scorching fire. Josep's mirror images were nothing to her true vision so her flames would strike the real deal. It might not be enough to buy her an extra round in the arena but it was worth allowing her master the extra time he needed to escape the clutches of the black tentacles.

07:58, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 18,29 using 4d6,8d6 with rolls of 3,5,4,6,3,4,1,3,6,6,1,5.  scorching ray damage.
07:57, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 25 using 1d20+6 with rolls of 19.  Critical Ray.
07:56, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 14,26 using 1d20+6,1d20+6 with rolls of 8,20.  Tiaca Readied Scorching Ray vs Josep touch AC1014.

Josep takes a total of 40 damage from Tiaca's readied spell. He must make a concentration check DC (insert correct number here) or loose his current spell.

And that's all i got as far as Tiaca goes. Avi won't take her readied action just yet.

Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

Sorry for the delay...

Josep starts casting and is hit fair and square in the face. He winces, wipes some blood and ash from his cheek, and turns back to Tiaca.
"She packs a punch! You've learnt from watching the best..."

It takes more than that though to break the guild master's concentration... his own spell is unleashed, knocking the air out of Tiaca's lungs.

It is followed by an other spell of the same kind killing the maiden outright, and the little skunk takes a hit on the fly.

Josep then casts a third spell, because he is done playing. He transforms into a huge being of fine sand and stone, dwarfing the two animals on that side of the wall. It is quite difficult for the crowd to see what happened to Josep actually, as he is still surrounded with five illusions of that huge earth-like creature...

No foul, since it's on me, but. Tiaca would need to use a level 3 spell slot to prepare and cast Reach Scorching Ray.

Just opened up a vote in OOC. As the only impact is ~40 hp, feel free to continue as normal assuming Josep is at full HP until otherwise stated.  When I close the vote, any damage required will be applied to Josep at that time. (Approx 24 hours)

Are you absolutely certain you don't just want to be a giant rolling boulder with no definable features whatsoever? I'll let you change it for free right now. Come on, i know you want to. ;P

Latro knew his training in the Tar Pits of Koth would pay off in this battle against Josep. As he squirms free of the tentacles, he watches through the darkness as Tiaca's critical spell is suddenly suspended in time. Josep seems just as surprised as he and Tiaca are and he notices the judges are talking amongst themselves. Twas the power of the arena at work once more but this time it wasn't looking in his favor.

Regardless, Josep quickly takes Tiaca out with his spells and grows to new heights. Literally. Latro would have to answer this quickly while also escaping from the tentacles. Using his inherent magic Latro begins floating himself upward through the air and out of reach of the tentacles. But it wasn't enough. He needed more hight to escape Josep's new natural reach. It would take what little heroic reserves he had left, but in his mind, it was worth it. After all, even with arena intervention, Luck had favored him thus far. Perhaps it would continue to grace him till the end of the match.

Meanwhile, Avi begins rummaging around in Tiaca's pack and pulls a potion from her pouch. She begins uncorking the bottle and prepares to feed it to Tiaca as best she can.

Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

So let me get this straight... moving whilst magically airborne doesn't go against the no flying rule, but hovering air elementals does. Interesting...
I'm not questioning the legality of your move, there's actually a precedent to this, with Afrezza in Battle Royale #5.
As long as you're not moving horizontally whilst airborne, you're not flying ;)

FYI the Wall of Force reaches between +5 and +6 (28ft tall)

Josep does not let a little crafty thinking from his opponent spoils his mood or his strategy.

The Huge Earth Elemental picks up the scroll he had dropped before, and starts casting whilst slowly sinking into the ground.

 He ignores the skunk.

Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

Josep, i believe that scroll of Summon Monster IX had been consumed when you summoned the air elementals. Unless you had two scrolls of said spell and i didn't notice in which case, ignore me. :P

Reading back Brakt’s ruling, that appears to be the case...
I’ll need to repost my turn entirely, unless that’s my third foul and that’s game.

Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

Josep attempts to grab a scroll which just isn't there.

While Josep attempts to chant the words from memory, he receives his 3rd Foul(DQ) and the match has ended.

If this is indeed game"

Latro is the victor by Disqualification.
He is Chaotic Evil, has 1,794 BP, and used 1 hero point during the match and 1 hero point to challenge the champion for a total of 2 hero points.

Sorry if I sound sour again, but there is no victor here.

Re: Championship #14: Josep Gavinho vs. Latro Dectus

Latro Wins by DQ.

Latro +512 BP, -1HP
Josep +150 BP, -1HP, -1 Championship Belt

Ref Brakt +416 BP

Calculations:
DUEL 1v1
Winner BP 1,794   Loser BP 1,537
Winner Reward 512 Loser Reward 150 - 50% rewards

Ref reward = (1654 + 200) / 8 = 416BP
