Lyn stepped through the door into the arena, and waited while a tiny bird followed through behind her.  She had been preparing for this moment, and it was time to show what she could do. A few words, and the bird shifted and morphed, its wings stretching and bending almost out of shape, in the end, a huge misshapen mess was left, slowly flying up to survey the arena. She then draws forth her rapier and waits.

He hated Lyn.

There were no ifs, ands, or buts about it. He hated she was a magus. He hated that she wanted to fight him. He hated that her name had fewer syllables than his own. He gritted his teeth in anger as he stared at the tiny mage and lunch.

Elemental power bubbled up from the ground around him. "Lyyynnn...," he said through gritted teeth. The ground started to shake as his anger grew. "Lyn!" He shouted while angrily staring at the mage. The elemental power swirled around him faster and faster as his anger grew more palpable. "Lyn! Lyn! Lyn!" He couldn't hate the magus any more than he did. When his anger reached a tipping point, Bruhli screamed in rage. The elemental power that was swirling around him immediately soaked up into the barbarian himself. "LYNNNN!!!!!!" As soon as all the elemental power soaked up into Bruhli, he screamed and there was an flash of elmental power. It was hard to tell if it was ecstasy or pain.

The elemental power shot out of him blinding all onlookers who looked to closely. The dust in the arena kicked up and when it finally settled. A large sized creature stood in the corner where Bruhli once stood. It was Bruhli but bigger and his normal dark brown skin seemed to glow faintly red. His head was bowed, in what appeared to be tiredness. But his head slowly rose and a grin appeared on his face.

“Let’s begin.”

Immediately a wall of pure elemental power streaked across the face of the arena. Bruhli was ready to destroy.

The elf was a bit taken aback by the level of rage coming from across the arena.  Shaking her head at the Barbarian who hated her, even though she had never met him, she raised her rapier in a salute, a silvery glow framing the blade.  As she murmured just a few words, Odod took flight above the wall splitting the arena.

all good then! Bruhli is up

Bruhli was going to snap Lyn and her rapier in half! Saluting before finishing the fight!? Lyn would be destroyed with prejudice!

He was about to step forward to do so, but there was a sudden pain. Fissures started to appear on his skin as power leaked out. The fire!! It was too much!! He couldn’t control all of it. But he had to destroy Lyn! He had to! He had to prove that he was better! "AAHHH!!" He gritted his teeth. But he couldn't hold the energy in.  He started to glow faintly red and purple and seemed to turn into a creature of light. “GAHHH AAAHHHH AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!”

The energy threatened to consume him entirely. “LYYYNNNN!!!" He screamed as the energy exploded out of him. As Odod was the only creature within range, it took the damage.

After the energy had left him Bruhli stood there looking longingly at the ceiling. This was all Lyn's fault.

She understood the Suli's rage now, and her eyes light up with a determined glow.  Her mind cast back towards the flickering pages of her spellbook, and without hesitation, the words spring to her mind, and forth from her lips.  A faint glow began to emanate from the elf, before bursting into bright green flames, and she took a few steps forward, staring the barbarian down.

Bruhli looked toward the mage and smiled widely, “So there’s fight left in you after all! I can’t say the same thing for your animal friend.”

As Bruhli stared at Lyn, the elemental energy that had evaporated after his last attack against Odod started to bubble up again. The rage that had been slacked with Odod’s passing began to shine.

The fire grew until it shown bright red around him. Bruhli saw Lyn cast a spell. And he actually had the ability to identify the spell Lyn cast. But Bruhli didn’t care. What could a spell do against his barbarian might?

Instead Bruhli growled angrily as he summoned his elemental power. “YOU DON’T KNOW PAIN! YOU DON’T KNOW RAGE! YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND MY FEROCITY! LET’S CHANGE THAT!” Fire shot out of Bruhli's hand and he turned it into a blast that he directed at Lyn. “DON’T DIE YET LYN, THERE’S MORE TO COME!!!” The fire was so hot that Lyn, if paying attention, could tell it tried to burn away at the spell she just cast – but was unsuccessful in dispelling Lyn’s effect.

Bruhli was enjoying this fight very much. "COME ON LYN! SHOW ME WHAT YOU CAN DO"

Bruhli followed up the first hit. Again – weightlessness before the power of the void sucked the life right out of Lyn.

“HA HA HA HAA!!! HA HA HA HAA! Little mage, Little mage, what happened to your determination?” As Lyn fell to the ground, Bruhli roared “NNNOOOOOOOOO! GET UP! GET UP! WE MUST CONTINUE TO FIGHT!” But the clerics were already coming for Lyn and Odod. Bruhli angrily thought about attacking the clerics – But something strange happened – the rage vanished. The elemental energy subsided and Bruhli shrunk back to his normal size, though he was still a large individual.

He gritted his teeth. “Must find another opponent” As the Suli stalked out of the arena, a wide grin could be seen on his face - the elemental rage was just beneath the surface.

Wow. That hurts...

Just one thing. Empower only modifies variable effects, which Maximise has none. So I don't think you should get the bonus damage from Empower.

I don't know if that makes a difference, but I have to try.

The effects are still variable meaning, maximize spell just "maximizes" those variables to the highest possible extent. In effect, maximize and empower spell both modify the variable effects, just at different times. See below

Maximize Spell

in a way, you’re both right, but mostly you’re both wrong.

Maximise gets you the maximum on what you would have rolled.
Empower adds half of you would have rolled.

For example :
10th level Fireball deals 10d6
The same empowered deals 10d6 x 1.5
The same maximised deals a flat 60
The same both empowered & maximised deals 60 + 10d6 x 1.5 (not 90)

The rule you quote spells it out very clearly.

Bruhli, jut roll the damage and add half of that to your maximised damage.

Either way, I did the math and 2 negative maximised blasts will take me, without the empower.

Lyn has 1,412BP, used 0 hero points and lost.

OOC: Corrected: attk 1 is 59 + 23(.5) = 70 and rolled the same for attk 2 so 140 negative energy damage.
