Oh my, that is some initiative mod!
You should apply for a new arena record with it ;)

I think we are good to go, there were some typos on my sheet (current AC, CMB and HP... some higher some lower)
Nothing to flail a cat over.

FYI:

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

Lyn stepped through the door of the Arena, staring down at the floor. She hadn't long been here before, but she was ready to ensure that she didn't leave the loser yet again.

She rested a hand on her sword, and began muttering a few words.  As she stepped towards the middle of the arena, drawing her sword, it began to glow, as Lyn started moving faster and faster.

Odod, not to be left out, chased after her, staring the druid down as he sat right between the 2 combatants.

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

The Ankou is taller this time around, and much broader. A veritable mountain of a man under his black shroud, ominously carrying a wickedly long and sharp halberd of some description.

Mute and immobile, he starts with a brief spell.

Then he moves north past the Dodo. With every step, he seems to grow a foot taller ! His beefy arms become logs, his legs trunks. By the time he stops moving, he is a genuine mountain nearly 30ft tall still covered in what could be a pirate ship sail, wielding a weapon of formidable proportion...

" GRâaaaaaah !!" is all he seems able to say in that shape, a guttural roar that resonate in the coliseum.

Protection from Energy.
Knowledge Nature to identify the shape.
I’m not sure what the DC should be — is it based of my HD or the base creature’s?
Maybe just roll your knowledge and ask Maelstrom.

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

In reply to Ankou (msg # 13):

The Rules aren't particularly clear on this point:

quote:
Check: In general, the DC of such a check equals 10 + the monster’s CR. For common monsters, such as goblins, the DC of this check equals 5 + the monster’s CR. For particularly rare monsters, such as the tarrasque, the DC of this check equals 15 + the monster’s CR or more. A successful check allows you to remember a bit of useful information about that monster. For every 5 points by which your check result exceeds the DC, you recall another piece of useful information.

Judging from the other knowledge checks, the bonus is either static number with no bonus or a static number + the level of the actual ability itself. From what I can tell, no knowledge check makes it 10 + HD or 10 + Character level. E.g.  a level 100 sorcerer casting magic missile would still only be a DC 25 + 1 ( spell level) to identify (if targeting you). It's based on the spell level, not caster level. Level appears to be irrelevant. And even more so, when you look at identifying creatures, it's based on the monsters CR, not HD.

quote:
Identify auras while using detect magic Arcana 15 + spell level

quote:
Identify underground hazard Dungeoneering 15 + hazard’s CR

quote:
Identify natural hazard Nature 15 + hazard’s CR

As such, I would say the DC would be 10 + CR of the creature.

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

Lyn growled as the druid grew in size, and shifted into some aberrant form she couldn't recognise.  Taking a deep breath, she took a moment to study the giant Fauchard he was holding.  Taking a moment, she cast a spell a spell and blinked out of existence!

A small disturbance in the area seemed to follow the invisible elf as she dipped to the side of the beast, and focused her attention once more on her blade.  Even as she did, Odod looked to distract the beast any way it could.

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

The Ankou got suddenly very articulate, and laughed: "Ha ! You want to get up close !! No thanks !"

The massive monstre of a gladiator moved casually across the arena floor, accepting attacks of opportunity as he did so.

He casually turned around, used a simple spell to strengthen his defences, and started screaming at the top of his lungs, causing the arena walls to tremble.

  " GRAAAAAAH!!"

Now clearly enraged, he raises his tree-size fauchard and the blade drops on Lyn's shoulder with uncanny precision.

I just have 1 question.  Fauchard, being a reach weapon, means you can't attack within 15 feet. As far as I can tell, Lyn is within 15 feet, and as such can't be hit by the Fauchard?

Also, for my next turn, can you confirm if my being invisible will leave you flat footed?

@Maelstrom: we agreed to play hidden on the map, so we don’t keep each other’s position secret, but being invisible still entails the normal benefits plus grants the benefit of cover.

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

Lyn shook her head as the beast seemed to have no trouble locating her, even through her invisibility.  She watched as her blade tore into the giant's side, but the ice and lightning coating her blade had no effect!

"I can dance like this all day. The question is, can you?"

Deciding it was time for a change of tactic, the Magus made a few gestures, and a few bolts of pure fire ripped into the giant's side, before those who could see the invisible creature noticed her dashing towards the beast, a bright flame shimmer along her blade.

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

I'm going to assume you have greater invisibility.
Just to be clear, your stealth check is 32, right? 52 before -20 penalty for loud noise/casting/attacking.

The Ankou was wounded, but nothing he couldn't handle.
"RAAH!! Stop following me!"  he uttered, as he walked away, this time far enough to get into a good striking position. His giant weapon was raised high in the sky, almost touching the arena magic ceiling, and suddenly lowered to hit Lyn, she almost managed to dodge the blow... but not quite.

As the tree-size fauchard drew blood, and lots of it, he asked:
"Are you all right!? Want to dance some more?"

I attacked first, then moved with Stealth afterwards, so I don't think the -20 penalty applies? I havent been completely still so I only get +20 from Invisibility, but that was already included. And yeah, spell is Greater Invis.

Mael? Your call.

I'll roll my AoO when I have a chance

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

The reason I’m asking is that if I fail my perception check (which is the case if your DC is 52) I need to spend a swift action to use my Auspicious Mark otherwise my attack misses. So I’ll do that.

Sorry for the double post, I didn’t want to edit.
Boadicea and Arkrim went over this in Battle for the Belt (check that thread)
If you’re moving, invisibility gives only +20 to stealth.
If you’re also casting/attacking, you take a -20 penalty to your stealth, for a total of +0.

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

In reply to Ankou (msg # 24):

@Lyn - Ankou is correct regarding stealth. I'll list some of the conversation below.

A stationary invisible creature (that does not attack) has a +40 bonus on its Stealth checks. This bonus is reduced to +20 if the creature is moving.

Additionally, the arena's "house rule" is that you take a -20 penalty to Stealth for taking certain actions rather than "automatically failing" as per normal interpretations of the Stealth skill. An attack would result in a -20 penalty to your stealth.

@Ankou - You didn't quite answer my question. PM

Also, the match can continue. My PM to Ankou does not affect the progress.

@Maelstrom:
I cannot find the rules for Hidden on the Map on the new rules site.

My understanding was that one can choose to strike at a square even if they don’t know what’s in there.

However if you rule that to attack, one needs to first beat the stealth DC with a perception check, I will do that.

Okay, that makes more sense, thanks.

Perception DC is 32, so you're good. You do still need to roll 50% concealment though I think?

Lyn crits on her AoO for 52 slashing and 11 fire.

Possible immediate action pending answer from Mael

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

The Ankou needs not roll for concealment as long as Lyn has a heartbeat, which I assume she has.

Upon receiving Lyn’s strike, he dismisses his ironskin spell (free action) to negate the critical hit.

He still takes 29 slashing and 2 flaming damage.

Current HP is 172/266

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

FYI, Ankou, the reason I was using a PM was to protect the confidential nature of what you're using. But if you don't care, we can have this discussion out loud.

You can absolutely choose what square to attack in. But I would rule your character has to have some in-game reason for choosing that 1 square out of the over 40 squares that are available for you. A good reason would be - that's where they last saw their opponent. Granted, in this case it’s irrelevant because Lyn didn't move (sufficient reason) and your attack missed (moot point), but I just wanted there to be clarification.

In reply to Maelstrom (msg # 38):

Thanks Grunyar for posting in OOC: I'll repost here

quote:
Hidden But Still On the Map (Optional Rule): Hiding characters still reveal their position on the map during PvP. However, if an attacker fails to pinpoint their location through means other than the map, then they improve their current cover benefits against that foe by two steps to a max of total cover (no cover -> partial cover -> cover -> improved cover -> total cover). This is in addition to concealment miss chances that remain in place should their foe find them until the start of their next turn. If underwater (or suffering a similar revealing condition, see above) they increase it by only 1 step. Because of this rule, spread effects can't negate your cover. So fireballing an invisible character at point blank if the caster didn't know where the target was would be as follows: 50% miss chance for an autosuccessful save, normal Reflex saving throw if miss chance hits with +4 cover bonus, treated as having Evasion. So you'd have to be unlucky on the miss chance AND saving throw to get damaged by such an attack while invisible. However, if the cast succeeded on a Perception check, the target would not get the cover benefits

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

Sorry for short post, on phone. Hopefully it makes sense

Lyn's eyes glow as her blade bites into the giant once again, and with barely a pause as the blade dug deep into her arm, she began the words of a spell, even as odod rushed forward into a flanking position.

A blink, and she was on him, her blade dug deep, and as her sword swing down again, a burst of flames plunged forth from both sides! As the flames cleared, it was clear the giant had taken a beating, while a bright electric shock ran over the beast.

Odod: move to F2

Lyn: Spell combat, dimension door to D4, full attack, on crit use critical perfection free action to increase multiplier. Use swift action for critical strike. Cast scorching ray. Use stored maximised shocking grasp as free action for good measure.

Ankou takes 138 slashing and 61 fire damage and 60 shock damage.

16:43, Today: Lyn rolled 38,14,9 using 12d6,3d6,1d10 with rolls of 5,1,1,3,6,1,5,6,2,2,2,4,3,5,6,9.  Flame damage, scorching ray, flaming X3 attacks, flaming hurst.

16:41, Today: Lyn rolled 32 using 1d20+17 with rolls of 15.  Critical Strike arcana cast scorching ray tac7.

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

I'm not sure I understand everything, but then magi are expert at action economy so that shouldn't surprise me.
Could you break down what is what action? Especially how do you dimension door and full-attack afterwards?

 - Ankou has a magic item that will cancel that critical and take normal damage instead.
 - The electricity damage is negated.
 - I don't think Scorching Ray is a valid candidate for Critical Strike (we'll have to ask Maelstrom) as it doesn't have a range of "touch". Actually that may be moot as there is no Critical to begin with.
 - I will take that aoo against Odod for moving out of a threatened square (not with the Fauchard, but with a natural attack)

So, assuming everything else is legit (which I don't doubt it is), Ankou takes:
 24 slashing (-2 DR = 22) and 3 fire from attack 1
 30 slashing (-2 DR = 28) and 5 fire from attack 2
 26 slashing (-2 DR = 24) and 6 fire from attack 3

For a total 74 slashing and 14 fire.

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

Well, that changes things.

Just to clear things up, actions are as follows.
Spell Combat(Full)
Cast dimension door(Free as part of spell combat. Dimensional agility feat lets me continue to act)
Full attack(free as spell combat)

Critical didn't happen, so no swift action happens, though you are right that scorching Ray isn't a valid target, so sorry about that, thanks.

As Ankou isn't dead yet, I'd like to take a stealthy 5ft step after my attack to E4. I'll also use a Swift action to refresh my Haste.

This means Lyn is left with 47hp left.

09:34, Today: Lyn rolled 33 using 1d20+21 with rolls of 12.  Stealth! (Correct modifiers applied).

Odod just moved normally so feel free to take that AoO.

In reply to Ankou (msg # 42):

Yes, Scorching Ray wouldn't be a valid target for critical strike as it has a Range of 'close' and critical strike specifically limits its effect to spells with a range of touch.

Also, a PM for Lyn!

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

Okay, so.

Spell-Combat allows a magus to cast a spell and full-attack in the same round.

Spell Combat:
At 1st level, a magus learns to cast spells and wield his weapons at the same time. This functions much like two-weapon fighting, but the off-hand weapon is a spell that is being cast. To use this ability, the magus must have one hand free (even if the spell being cast does not have somatic components), while wielding a light or one-handed melee weapon in the other hand. As a full-round action, he can make all of his attacks with his melee weapon at a –2 penalty and can also cast any spell from the magus spell list with a casting time of 1 standard action (any attack roll made as part of this spell also takes this penalty). If he casts this spell defensively, he can decide to take an additional penalty on his attack rolls, up to his Intelligence bonus, and add the same amount as a circumstance bonus on his concentration check. If the check fails, the spell is wasted, but the attacks still take the penalty. A magus can choose to cast the spell first or make the weapon attacks first, but if he has more than one attack, he cannot cast the spell between weapon attacks.

As such, as part of spell combat, I can cast dimensional door, then take advantage of dimensional agility to attack.

I love how you guys just went with this when I did it vs Vry, but now have an issue with it :P

Re: Duel # 218: Ankou vs. Lyn

As the bird approached, Ankou slapped it properly.

The Ankou started showing signs of weakness... he moved away to get back in striking position. He moaned about his choice of weapon...
"Grrrr!! That thing is just too huge for close-quarter fighting!"  he uttered as he walked away

He hit again, and his fauchard proved efficient after all, as the steel struck true and cut the magus open from shoulder to hip.
  "WRAAAAAAH!! "  the giant bellowed.
