Re: Chapter Seven : Waiting

After every member of Pluto Company has re-supplied, they are summoned to meet Lt. Colonel Maddox.

Maddox was one of the few survivors of Hillcrest - and knows Major Zor Karno well.

The briefing comences once everyone has seated. The officers and non-coms of Pluto Company sit up front, with the soldiers and mercenaries behind them - Maddox stands facing the company next to a pointy-eared d-bee of some sort, two savage-looking simvan and a massive reptilian humanoid.

Re: Chapter Seven : Waiting

"Pluto Company, how are we this morning? Your recent sacrifice has been brought to the attention of Tolkeen command, and I have good news. You are all being pulled off the front lines."

Some of Pluto Company clap, and cheer - Maddox pauses before continuing.

"You have been tasked with defending a village of the Kingdom of Tolkeen from possible Coalition invasion in the near future. You will be in charge of setting up defenses and preparing a small militia of volunteers from the town. This village will be your home for next few weeks - an emptied hotel has been made available as your base of operations. You will still be in contact with us at all times - so consider this a huge break. I have provided Major Karno with written instructions as well as maps and such of the area. That's it for me, I am going to allow your new Major to say a few words - before you all head out again to make Tolkeen proud. Oh - I've almost forgot. I am standing with four new additions to Pluto Company."

He motions with his hand the two simvan, the reptilian, and the winged woman.

"Major Karno?"

Re: Chapter Seven : Waiting

Karnon's eyes narrow to slits at the news. Free... but away from the front lines? Some might consider that good news, but Karnon would have relished the opportunity for revenge against the indignities he had suffered at the ignorant hands of the Coalition.

His nails bit into his palms at the frustration.

His tongue lolled slightly as he considered his options. Training volunteers? Hardly. He'd be useless in that department. His skills weren't such that they could be learned in a few short months. This time might instead be more usefully used for creating more magical resources, in the form of talismans, amulets and scrolls. And a summoning circle...

Karnon waited for Major Karno to make his own speech. He had some things to gather.

Inside the shell of the golem Obidiah wanted to scream. He had always been a patient man but now he is no longer a man. He is a construct of war and he certainly did not sacrifice his humanity to training volunteers.

"Oh well the Coaltion might have a thing or two to say about whether we are just sitting around putting farmers through drills. Even if that be the case there is likely some combat to be found."

Ramenhotep grins devilishly at the prospect of the coming mission.  To lay down defenses in the hopes of obliterating the next wave of Coalition fodder, there could be no more appropriate a task.  Already plans for traps and strategies are flowing into the sphinx's mind.  This would allow him to get his first taste of revenge without wasting his talents on the chaotic front lines.

Oksana is tall, at least 6'6", and her body glistens with a silvery-chrome skin.  Every feather on her wings is like its own little mirror, reflecting an image of her surroundings a thousand times.  The wings are each partially retracted and appear to be capable of telescoping out to a span of thirty feet or so.  The shiny and smooth surfaces of her toned physique is covered only by a black pair of spandex capris pants, a black sports bra, and a pair of black rubber climbing shoes.  A small headset is worn, covering her right eye with a multi-optics visor.  She's also got a small satchel slung over one shoulder.  No weapons are visible.

After the speech delivered by Maddox, Oksana moves off to stroll among the other soldiers and mercenaries.  She doesn't introduce herself to anyone, preferring to just get a feel for her new comrades.

Looking more like one of the civilians they're currently bound to protect, Jeran had his hands thrust in the pockets of his jeans and was rocking back and forth on his heels as he listened to the briefing.  Very little of what he knew could be taught to civvies in such a short time, but perhaps this would be an opportunity to pick up a few new things from the other magi that might be useful for this.

As Oksana strolles by, he smiles and openly looks her up and down -- with emphasis on the 'up'.

"Hey there, beautiful," he says with a grin, seemingly unconcerned of the fact that she could likely break him in two without breaking a sweat.

Ramenhotep paused to watch a flock of griffins flying overhead.  Each of the group of six appeared to be mounted by a humanoid rider.  Their silent grace as they glided through the air was enough to bring a measure of peace to this sphinx's soul and he realized how tense he has been of late.  The anxiety of preparing for war had snaked its way into his mind and it was poisoning his appreciation for beauty.  Griffins were like cousins to the sphinx, lower on the evolutionary scale, but related nonetheless.  Ramenhotep turned his gaze back to the earth after the creatures passed by and he lay down on the floor under a window.
Ramenhotep pulled out a small notebook and pen and began writing lines of text into the leather-bound journal.  He would periodically pause, look around the area and then return to scribing whatever words he needed to record.  The sphinx remained alone.

Lt. Lynn sits at a table near the front with some other officers. Her face is hidden deep within the hood of her robe as she looks down at the table going over a small pile of papers. She has a journal out and is jotting down notes in it with her left hand. Without looking up or stopping her writing she replies to Jeran. "You just did. If you have something important to say then out with it." Of course it is not Jerans fault she is even bitchier today than she normally is. Like everyone else she had heard the exploits of Pluto Company and what they had accomplished on the field of battle in such a short period of time. With her desire to rise through the ranks quickly she was excited that her request for a transfer had been put through. Hearing that she was going to be babysitting a village of farmers as her first assignment did not exactly fit the visions of glory she had concocted in her mind.

Matte black Samurai armor would seem out of place anywhere else, but in Tolkeen it seemed like nothing was a surprise. Demons, Monsters, all manner of Mercenaries and Mages... it was a veritable melting pot of the strange and even the stark silver embroidery upon his exposed areas didn't draw even a second glance from anyone in Tolkeen.

Standing among the center of the crowd, Photios had arrived to the Pluto Company to recieve orders and a Platoon assignment only to be present for a mission debriefing before he was even settled. It didn't really matter to him, as long as their was the chance of encountering Coalition forces he would be fully committed. He needed to make those short-sighted, close-minded humans pay and this war was the best place for it. Better still, constructing defenses was something he was quite skilled at especially if they were to be given much time to prepare.

The golem stands impassive for nearly a few seconds creating an awkward silence. Then the telepathic reply comes to Dyvalis,

"Oh pardon me... It is so easy to get lost in thought these days. Inhabiting this golem is such an alien experience I am honestly beginning to struggle with it I think. Funny you should mention that particular presentation. It does smack of irony given my current incarnation. While I like to believe my intentions were pure I will most likely be remembered by history, if I am remembered at all, as an old man too cowardly to die who sold his soul using patriotism as an excuse. But I digress and I apologize. I am sure you did not come over to attend my self-pity party. I always considered Gemada a bit of a pompous windbag myself. Did you hear how he volunteered with no prompting to quest in an alien dimension for a mystic artifact known as the Mobius. He perished on another world trying to save Tolkeen. Funny really the contrast that often arises between what we say and what we do. I do remember you. I remember your father. I often found fault with the man. Looking back perhaps I was wrong."

Zor, waits for a bit before addressing Pluto Company, he has done little to improve his appearance after being in captivity, well he had groomed the several month old beard that he had grown, and wrapped a bandage over his empty left eye socket. But as a True Atlanean he still looks rather distinguished....the frontal armor plate his is wearing is made from the scale of a large fury beetle, and underneath a chain mail consisting of smaller fury beetle scales. The only thing in his hands is a single peice of paper.

“You don’t need any words of encourage mean or anything about how you’re the best company among Tolkeen’s fighting force. Your alive and that means your either good or lucky. I must have been lucky, because I was captured and subsequently rescued by you, and as such Tolkeen has seen fit for me to command you.”

“There are a few issues which have occurred recently that I have to address before we go on.”

“There seems to have been a miscommunication regarding Splugorth forces. From here on out they are to be attacked on site. It seems like Tolkeens right foot didn’t know what the left foot was allowed to do. But if I find out that a lower ranking individual disobeys the lawful and prudent orders of those above them, they will be reduced in rank one grade and forfeit any loot collected at the end of the battle.”

“This brings me to the next subject; Because of the incident with the Rau-man Arven, the disposition of all loot collected, from the battlefield or from the bodies of our fallen will be determined by the platoon commanders. I don’t care if the dispositions of items are determined after or during the battle, whatever decision is made by the platoon commander goes. If a platoon commander decides to horde all the good loot for himself or is favoring some and un-favoring others bring it up the First Sergeant.”

“As of now the Mystic Knight Jack is promoted to First Sergeant. If you a have a problem that can not solved amongst yourselves or your platoon commander, you go to the First Sergeant. Don’t come to me, unless of course you’re an Officer.”

“Now onto platoon reassignments," and for the first time Zor begins reading the peice of paer in his hand. "I will be forming a Headquarters Platoon, led by myself, consisting of Osema, and his crew, the First Sergeant, Photios Dimitrios Erasmus, and Ahnaka Kale.”

“The mercenaries Madness and Dlamar have decided to no longer fight as part of Pluto company.”

“Lt. Xion, your now a 2nd Lieutenant, Lt. Drake your now in charge of Third Platoon.”

“Attila since Lt. Drake had a disagreement with you, you are now moving to First Platoon, and Obidiah you are moving to Third platoon to take Attila’s place.”

“Sergeants Razgriz and Dresteran are also being moved. Sergeant Razgriz is moving to 2nd platoon, and Sergeant Dresterran is moving to 1st Platoon."

“For those of you who wish to know Magnet Man is recoving from the wounds he suffered at the hands of Arven. Magnet Man most likely survived due to the actions of Ahnaka.”

“As for your current orders, Lt. Colonel Maddox said them himself, we will be setting up defenses for the next few weeks and training volunteer militiamen.”

“That is all, we will be moving out tomorrow morning.”

He was surprised to hear his name called out, and even more so in the context it was used. His eyebrows rose in his human form for a moment. A promotion? Right after being rescued from the Coalition? Strange. But he let his face become more impassive again, trying to take it in stride.

He couldn't help but notice it would give the potential for much much more responsibility, especially being...what was the term?...nurse maid to a bunch of soldiers. He sighed almost inaudibly.

The remark aimed to reduce some of the pressure upon Oksana by distracting her apparent suitor was lost in the scramble as the new Major finally showed himself and began the briefing. Learning of his Platoon assignment he noticed the Atlantean heritage of the Major and made a note to inquire as to which Clan he was from.

Dismissed, he was about to file out and prepare for the mission but his calm was disturbed by the rowdy Brodkil Leader. To think he would dare talk as such when their Major was of the same race he was insulting. He regretted causing commotion, but he could not let the honor of an Atlantean woman be insulted, "A mangy beast like you could only do one thing with an Atlantean woman, and that would be to lick her boots. You'd be best served by watching your mouth in the company of so many Atlanteans, that is... if you enjoy your existence, Brodkil."

Speaking out as he did was not done for the sake of making the Demon silence himself or to exert some sort of control. No, it was simply the Atlantean's own code of honor. In times of war, and for him that was always, one had to hold onto some vestige of themselves or risk losing it all to the horrors and atrocities seen every day.

Non-confrontational types, or those who knew better might in fact keep their mouth's shut. Speaking out would only give fuel to their fires and begin new conflicts. Insults given by demons really weren't anything to be concerned about, they slung them about continually throughout the day. But to Photios, it was the mere act of voicing his objections that allowed him to retain him humanity in the face of the things he had done in the pursuit of revenge.

"Words have power, even those of Demons... Alas, we shall be working together though I use that term loosely. You keep to your end of the bargain, don't touch the tolkeenites and no friendly fire, do that and you get paid. Thats all that matters, right?"

Lotus' hands hang loosely at her sides in a fashion one might expect from a gunslinger preparing for a duel.  Although she has two firearms holstered on her belt, she would have to be insane to start shooting among the rest of Pluto Company in case she missed the brodkil.  But she stands there nonetheless, watching the interaction between the newly promoted sergeant and the brodkil "Lord".

Zor waits with his arms crossed to see how his newly promoted First Sergeant decided to handle something as trivia as name calling. It would be his first test as a First Sergeant; maybe he would have to find another First Sergeant before too long or maybe not. It all depended on Jack's actions.

Of course Zor was not pleased with Lord Osema’s insult, but that was the general nature of the Brodkil. One couldn’t change the general nature of a Brodkil anymore then one could prevent a male dog from mounting a bitch in heat, as it was in their nature to do so. He silently thought to himself.

Re: Chapter Seven : Waiting

Karnon quiet laugh was like a barking yip, as he saw the posturing between the Brodkil and the Atlanteans. It hadn't gone unnoticed that aside from the Brodkil, the only members of Major Karno's HQ platoon were Atlanteans. Elitism didn't really belong in the Tolkeen army, particularly in light of the reasons for this war. That in mind, the juxtaposition of something like Osema making advances at Ahnaka, however crude, was a source of humor for the wolfen.

"Calm yourself Brodkil, before someone decides to put a leash on you." he chuckled, obviously not in any way truly offended by the remarks. "And perhaps I shall provide you and yours with some sport for you during this next... assignment."

The offer was honestly given, and a potential way of diverting the Brodkil during the occupation of this village... creatures such as they would grow restless without bloodshed, and a Shifter such as Karnon or Mephisto could indeed summon challanging opponents for them... or enslave the Brodkil outright if it came to that. Subdemons were quite easy to handle.

Lord Osema throws his hands up in a mocking display indicating that he has somehow been wronged. He does take a brief second to give a look to his pack telling them to be ready turning back to Jack he simply nods his head in the affirmative. He remains quietly respectful just until Jack starts to turn away and then he remarks in a voice that is definitely not a whisper.

"I gotta better idea Sergeant Jack-Ass. how about you toss my fucking salad while I fist your dirty little bitch Mystic-Knight whore over there and my boys go find your mother so we can all anal rape her. That is what I was thinking...sir."

Once all the officers had convened around Zor he breaks the bad news, they would be escorting supplies whilst on the way to Mad Town...

“Tolkeen wants us escort nine supply trucks to Fort Comartin, so we will not be able to teleport or fly to Mad Town. I want fourth platoon to teleport there and act as an advance party.”

“When we move out in the morning I want 2nd Platoon in the lead, then 1st Platoon, then the nine trucks we will be escorting and have 3rd Platoon bringing up the rear. Platoons will rotate every 16 miles, with the lead platoon falling to the rear and the middle platoon taking point. We are being given a detachment of several air Juggernauts which will be providing air cover for us, I am assigning them to 3rd Platoon, under the command of Cpl Van. They will also assisting in the defense of Mad Town."

“Additionally I want scouts on the ground out in front and to the sides of the road, as well a rear guard for whichever platoon is last in the marching order.”

“Any questions or suggestions?”

OOC: While this is intended for the officers (Lt and above) the rest of the company will soon find out about the escort duty.

Air Squad Positions (based on the map in Shadow of Evil):

1 Iron Dragonfly 300ft above the foutain in the center of town (#17).
1 Warhawk patroling the north-western skies from the marina (#1) to the clock tower (#16). (200ft altitude)
1 Warhawk patroling the south-eastern skies, from the Lion's Den Arena (#39) to about 50 yards outside the town. (200ft altitude)
1 Wing-Blade stationed 200ft up, near the Junk Yard (#46).
1 Wing-Blade stationed 200ft up, near the Animal Market (#24).
1 Wing-Blade stationed 200ft up, near Boone's Farm (#11).

Other than the Iron Dragonfly in the middle of town, all the Juggernauts are quiet and unimposing. The Dragonfly's engines however send a rumble through the air, announcing its presence.
