Nifty.  I've updated the descriptions of a few of the NPCs you're likely to encounter. I'm also about to add an NPCs thread, that will list the NPCs and who they are to you... and then guess what?  I will fix up the "Tavern" thread.  The reason why it's taking forever is because of the description I am setting up.

Giving me time to get this move done might be nice, but you could advertise for cleric and give until Sunday (my expected return to RPoL). If we have one by then, great. If not, well as Chef would say: Fudge 'em. :D

We'll wait for you to get back until we actually start the serious play.  Besides, the Inn/Tavern/Thingy is where you'll meet other interesting characters, like this one. :)

Well, when I've tried it before, Firestarters seemed pretty weak... since they can't cast spells in rage, don't even have the armour of a Barbarian, and lose out majorly on HP. When raging, their AC is even worse. Firestarters are even more limited by the fact they only get offensive spells and Fireshield...

I've updated the NPC thread.  Now you all can have some idea which NPCs you encounter are good for what. :)

Okay, did that intro sorta bother anybody else?  It did seem a bit rushed and hard to follow.  General idea is, at some point, each of you approach the mansion - for whatever reason.  You're already at the whole outpost (The mansion isn't the only building.  It's one of about 8 or 9, but it is the dominant one.) so how you get there and why specifically, is up to you guys.

Anyway, upon entering the mansion, you run into the first line of defense, get around him, and then enter the main lounge/foyer, to see groups of soldiers preparing, and a rather pissed off Guildmaster.

And Michaella.  Keep in mind, you're going to be torching your cleric too, with your action.  He won't be able to avoid any of the damage either, chained to a tree like that.

He's that close to the fire?! How big is the fire I just doubled, anyway? I was assuming it occupied a single 5' square, which the hunters were gathered around. I didn't realise the fire was within 10' of the tree...

The whole area is maybe a 15' diamiter with the fire in the middle.  That's why I said I needed to draw a map. :P

Well... if he's on a tree at the edge of the clearing, he's just outside the fire itself... so he'll probably be pretty uncomfortable, but not in danger of actually igniting.

You PMed me that it had a 20' radius.  That's 5 additional feet all the way around.  And I specified that the tree was in the clearing.

Nono, you misunderstood...

Raging Flame makes all fires within a 30' radius of the target of the spell double in size. So say there's one 5' fire in a clearing and I use Raging Flame. The 5' fire becomes 10'. On the other hand, if there's four 5' fires in a clearing 30' across, each 5' fire becomes 10';

However, aside from any of the stupid baby name jokes I could spout, I was inspired. When (if) I have kids, I'm naming them after my favorite things to eat as well. Steak and Potatoes. :D

Hey, how do you want me to do Initiative?  Do you guys (and girls) want to keep the same initiative score, or do you want me to roll again each round?  Also, from here on out, to speed things up, all NPCs (on the same side) will go with the same initiative score.  That way it keeps things from slowing down.  Cool?

I always play with one-time-only Initiative, but if you want to run it another way... how does that affect flatfootedness? Does each round count as the start of a combat, too?

That's why I was asking how you wanted to handle it.  Technically speaking, you'd only be caught flat footed on the first round.

And even then only 'till you get your Initiative...

Are you updating the map? >< I can't see where the Paladins are now in my mind...

I vote we keep the same initiative each round, per combat/encounter.  1 less roll to worry about :)

I'm going to wrap up this combat scene and this thread today and give everybody the exp for it, and move on.  I think we've spent enough time on this combat, and it was kinda crappy because I needed to take some time off, twice, while doing it.  I just would prefer to sweep it under the rug and forget about it for a while, if ya know what I mean. :D

I didn't take the armor.  I would have had to take it off them and everything, and I didn't want to mess with that.  Their swords have already been taken.  So the rest I should easily be able to carry.

And most of that stuff was found before Kilgar came back.  Michaela might have seen her search the bodies.  Cabo.  But not Kilgar, he didn't come until the very end of it...he was off chasing the lizardman.

In Ely's post you clearly state that she PAUSES while looting and responds to Kilgar. Even taking 20 you might have gotten through the first paladin's things. But since the DM mentioned it last it leaves one to assume it was the last thing you came across. So either ELy was done (thus negating her having to pause to speak to Kilgar) or Kilgar was there while she looted the woman.

In any event: There's a half-orc in the party. You found a scroll written in orcish...See where I'm going with this? :P

I'm not saying you don't see the scroll, but I had already stated before that I was storing things while I found them.  I don't care if everybody knows what I find.  I always share my loot in every single game I'm in.  I don't like other pcs coming in and using player knowledge though.  I would have easily handed over the scroll and you wouldn't have had to take anything out of my hands, but I hadn't gotten that far yet.

And yes, I did pause to respond to you for the 5 seconds my statement would have made.  Even taking 20...you had to run after him, get mired in muck, and come back.  You didn't run either you hit things and through a temper tantrum.  You might have missed the entire thing.  You should have asked Swamprose how much you saw.  See where I'm going with this?

Yes, but taking 20 is exactly....20 times the amount of time it takes to adequately search the bodies, and you did a hell of a job if you found things like ring (being worn under gauntlets that go with the armor).  So if I were to use the rules Ely, it would take you 20 minutes to do that, which is more then enough time for Kilgar to come back.  Not to mention for Michaela to do something about it.

What makes my final decision for me though is this.  You address Kilgar after his rant, but before you pack all the belongings up, which to me reads that you're talking to him while you're packing.

You can't talk to him if he's not standing there.

So assuming it only took 5 minutes to thoroughly search the bodies, Kilgar has enough time to get where he's going and come back, see you searching the stuff and looking at it and respond.  Even Michaela would get too.  I'm sorry Elly, you just can't take it all without one of them stopping you if they want too.  Besides, it's only the scroll he took.  You can't read it anyway.  :)

Again...I don't care if they carry every darn thing.  I just had a sack for that purpose.  It has nothing to do with that.  But I don't like it that players use the player knowledge and assume they saw everything that they couldn't see.  That's why I'm upset.

Michaela, once she's controlled the fire raging with her, would have easily seen everything.  Cabo would have seen everything.  I'm not taking or hiding anything from anybody.  If I had I would have rolled a sleight of hand check to try and slip things out from under Cabo's notice...but I didn't.

Backtrack to where Kilgar snatched the scroll.  This is what you're both going to do.  Elly, make a Decipher Script check to see what the scroll is.  If you can't do it, then you sit there confused, looking at the scroll for a moment or two.  It's DC 15.  Please modify your post to reflect this.

Kilgar, modify your post to reflect the fact that you see her staring at this scroll when you approach.  You of course, can read it.

Quick question to my players.

There has been a dispute, and Elly is no longer with us.  One of the reasons I was personally offended by her loss was because of what it did to you two other faithful players.  Guys, we really need a third party member at this point.  You two really can't make it through the last wing of the adventure without a rogue AND a priest.  And me personally, in spite of Kilgar's efforts, would like to see another heavy hitter in the group so Michaela can focus on blowing shit up. :)

So here's what I'm asking.

Do you guys want me to alter the ending of this adventure, give you a summary of what happened, pass out your cool treasure and level you up, and then find a replacement for the next adventure?  Your new party member would have a fresh start at this point.

Or, do you want to sit here and wait, while I advertise for a new player or two, and then continue with the original quest?  Either works for me, but I prefer the first option, because I can finally judge how powerful you be for my next Job.  The next one turns you into either Tomb Raiders, or Reinforcements to a Zhentilar squad attacked by Harpers. :)

Here's the total amount of experience awarded...  14,840.  This is in addition to what you've all already gotten.

The items of value that were to be recovered were, an Amulet of Natural Armor +1, Dagger +1, 10 Silver tipped Arrows +2, 4 Potions of Cure Light Wounds, 1 Potion of  Resistance (as per the Resistance spell), and Gauntlets of Ogre Power +4

Along with 2 Gemstones valuing 250gp.  2 Gemstones valuing 200gp, and 5 50gp gemstones...there was a 400gp gold necklace...it is a MW item and could theoretically be enchanted.

And finally, 2,100gp.

Congratulations Kilgar for sticking this one out.  If Michaela shows up, split it with her.  Divide the exp by 2 and the gp by 2.  If she doesn't, it's, presumably, yours.

A couple things.  None of it good.  I'll start with the most obvious first.

1) None of you have anywhere in your background that you're loners who don't talk to anybody.  I'm also a GM who hates what I like to call "No-selling".  When somebody (like Axeface) does something (like dump a 250lbs chest of whatever, on a table) you notice it.  You don't ignore it.  You respond to it, or react to it in some fashion.  The Tavernish thread is there specifically so you all can talk to each other and interact with each other.  The Guildmaster is a smart dude, he's not going to assign any of the new comers a task he's giving to Axeface or Michaela without at least some effort on their part.  Remember you're all here because you want to work for the guy.

2) Michaela.  It's been a week, closer to two, since we've heard a peep from you.  You've been given a lot of something to interact with in the Tavernish thread.  Post, or let me know something within the next 24 hours or I'm docking all of that XP and the treasure you wanted, sending you on your way, and giving it to Kilgar.  You gotta earn your rewards here.

3) This one is a little better.  You'll hear from the Guildmaster later on today or tomorrow, it depends how quickly Michaela catches up, but right now the only one who can expect anything out of him is Kilgar.

It's cool.  Appreciate the heads up.  Kilgar was the holdup, and through a combination of tag, I think we got it all sorted out.  Since Michaela is gone, he got an additional boost from the previous adventures - I'm not going to reward the players who didn't stick around - and needed to finish his updates.  I think he's good to go now.  I should be moving the combat along later tonight.

Things have stalled.

I keep waiting for a reply to my question or for others to post to keep the battle moving but nothing has happened.

Should I be waiting for my turn in initiative before I post?

Well, the other posters should've already posted, but...

It's kinda okay that you hadn't, since I'm about completely fed up with DnD on RPOL.  1 combat scene takes weeks to get through a single round.  I expect to see multiple posts, daily, from people when there is combat...

And I hate drawing maps.  I'm not even going to bother doing it.  In fact, I'm pretty sure I am closing this game down.

Its not you or any of the other players.  It's just I'm all angsty right now and I can't place it.  I'm on the burnout phase of being a DM, and I hate having to do maps and combat in DnD... because the maps I just hate having to do, and combat takes incredibly too long.

That's fine.  If you need a break from DMing, I don;t think is a big deal.  This game has barely gotten going (for me at least) So, I haven't lost much by the game ending.

Take a break from Dming for awhile and then when you do feel like doing the work and stuff, start up a new area or this area again.

I think that's better to stop the game then try to DM it when your heart isn't in it.

I, for one, like the maps for combat.  It doesn't have to be big colorful maps, just a simple grid is good for me.  But enough to view things and say, "my charcater moves to F4 and attacks the beast in E4" or whatever.  I like the "tactics" of fighting and having a map makes it easier to for me to see what's going on.

But everybody has their own style of playing and DMing.  The key to happy gaming is to find players and a DM who have similar styles.  If people in a game have very different styles of play, I don't think the game will go well, or people will be less happy.  Not to say that one or the other is right and the other is wrong, they are just different styles.


So, I'm sorry the game is being closed down, but it's not the end of the world for me.  (besides, I wanna try making a new Character type.

Dammit, and I just got back! I did say in the ROA OOC forum, and I think on here as well, that I was going away for a month or more... so it's kinda unfair to dock everything from me. ><

Still, if you're on burnout, you're on burnout, and I know how much that can bite - not from GMing, but certainly from writing. Hope you get some spark back soon.

However, Kilgar Axeface is the most experienced PC in the region.  He is level 6.

I've had no word from Kilgar. I could run two groups but I'd prefer just one at the moment.

How often would you be able to post 3-4 times a week?

I haven't been able to get ahold of Kilgar in a few days.  He's got an odd work schedule, and mine is even more odd. :P

On the other hand, I've got several thousand dm exps built up.  I might decide to use'em in my own region. :P

Gordon is still around so thats Rogue covered.

I've a player interested who wants to make up a cleric.

Thats two spots filled. I'll take a max of 7 players. If Kilgar and Michaela are staying and Swamp is staying thats a good enough group to be getting on with.

The level spread may be a bit tough to begin with. Kilgar 6th, Michaela 5th, Swamp who knows;-), Gordon and Cleric at 3rd.

Gaius, my character, will be moving on to colder climates.

What type of PC you going for Swamp?

Probably a Cleric or Warrior of some sort.

Might go for a Cleric of Loviatar, a plain Fighter, or a Cleric of Bane.  Whatever it is, it'll have Zhentilar ties.

You can expect me to start at level 4 (at the very least).

You could always bump us up a level or two...

Anyhow you'll level fast anyhow. Going to have to challenge the tough people, so you'll get all that filty xp for keeping your head down and not being killed.

Just an FYI, I'm looking at a 4rth level Fighter, 1rst level Cleric, or a 3rd level Rogue, 2nd level Cleric.

The first will PrC into a Divine Champion

The second will PrC into an Assassin.  It just depends on what you want to do with it.

Uhm, you can't use DM XPs for more than one level in a row, so the very highest you could start would be level 4, actually.

We have a new cleric of Bane; Welcome to Malien Darkon.

Gordon is a rogue, but I can easily fit another rogue type in. if you want to go the way of assassin swamp then I can throw a few missions connected with that.

Not like its going to be difficult to find employers in the Moonsea.

Since I can only be 4rth level to start with, I am leaning towards a Fighter/Cleric of Talos, because I know this group could make good use of another front line assaulter - provided Kilgar sticks with us.

If he doesn't, we'll be out a front line assaulter.

On the other hand, I'm still toying with the Rogue/Cleric and eventually becoming an assassin.  I suppose a Rogue/Cleric of Talos would be alright... I'll just miss all the extra HPs and Feats.

Hey... I'm a front line assaulter! With Barbarian/Sorcerer, I have the effective HP of a Monk. Sure, my lack of anything but fire magic is a bit limiting when it comes to buffing myself, but...

With Michaela staying and Swamp with his Fighter/Cleric, then I only have one more position to fill.

Failing that I'm starting in 24hrs with 4 and sod the rest of them. I'm bored with waiting around.

I know Kilgar will be interested in continuing this game.  I spoke to him last night on the phone, but only for like a minute or so... it was a cellphone and it was a second brother's.  He's been in FL for the last week or so (I think, I didn't really ask) but he'll get to posting as soon as he's got a chance.

Well I guess I'm going to tell a little about myself to pass a little time.  I'm in Pensacola, Fl so if anyone is near and wants to play table top D&D let me know.  I'm currently working on my own campain setting.  Taking things from all the other books, that I like to include AD&D, and making a new world and all.  Man my work is cut out for me.  I have five chapters done.... +2 Thug
+2 Aggressive (Trait)

That's how  :)  I need to be fast though because I have some other stuff that makes me have -2 to AC and -1hp/level.  So I have to kill fast and be able to move out quickly so I also took the Quick trait which gives me an extra 10ft to speed.

And yes I know I still have not writing a description.  I'm going to be working on that tonight or tomorrow. Sorry that it's not posted.

My skillchecks suck, pfft.  I am +7 for Swim, and that's my best one. :(

Of course, you can suspect that a character dedicated to Talos should be a capable swimmer.  I am well rounded though.  A decent caster and a decent fighter, with no obvious flaws besides not having oodles of skillpoints.

I just need to finish out my spells but I have my weapons and Armor and other inventory down.  Woohoo.  I have 56lbs of gear, and 40 of it is my chainmail.  Go figure.

Of course, I have 2 Javalins of Lightning.  I bet they come in useful. :D

remind me to runwhen you want to use them.  Well I only have a masterwork shortsword and 5 daggers.  That I can talk about.  my skills are not all that hot also but they should get me by.  If not I can always do what a rouge is good at and run.  :)

Hey, the Spear is a rather versitile weapon.  You can throw it.  You can set it against a charge.  You can stab with it.  That x3 Crit on it is nice too.  It does a d6 for damage, which isn't quite as much as you'd like for a fighter, but for a Cleric/Fighter it's pretty good.

... spears do D8 damage.

Oh, I have claw bracers, if anyone was wondering. Yeah, I know, a pyrokene who spent feats on exotic weapons... so bite me. :p

I have questions concerning my Javalins of Lightning.  The DMG doesn't give a very good description for them except they are 5d6 lightning bolts that are DC 14.

Okay, that's nice and all, but do I need to make a Ranged Touch Attack, and if so, do I use my entire attack bonus for a ranged attack?

I'd take that to mean that they effectively cast Lightning Bolt as a 5th level caster with 12 in their stat, so... they force a reflex save for half damage and travel in a Line effect, meaning no attack roll of any kind is needed.

Hmm.  Wonder if there is a way to juice one up... 5d6 isn't all that good at dc 14 to save for half.  The most you could do at that rate is 15 points... Of course, it is without an attack roll.  And it would fry you pretty quickly. ;)

Well, I cut myself from the Thay region.  Vallah is a good DM.  Really descriptive, but it isn't what I am looking for when it comes to playing a warrior character.

I'd have liked to've known from the very beginning that I wasn't going to be able to hit something with my Mithril sword, or I'd have played a different type of character all together. :P  Anybody know any regions looking for a tank that likes to hit stuff?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting this show on the road.  It'll be nice to sit back, and not be the DM for a change, and still be able to play an evil character.

I believe the javelins work like lightning bolt.

Everything in 5' wide path 60' long in a straight line gets hit and makes a save.

So they work best when you can get the enemy lined up in a row.

Thats how I read it too.

As for fighting, well you'll have plenty of that to be getting on with.

Might even try to work in some goody goody who you can mug.

Neri - Your guess is as good as mine about the town/village.  If I was to guess, I'd say it's one of the many unnamed hamlets/villages that dot the Moonsea.

To answer your other question though, Cyrus hasn't broken you, has he?  He just caught you being sneaky, and is trying to point you in a much safer direction - the front.

Martin:  I edited the thread with the maps to put it in group 5 for you.  I'm not sure if players who are just a part of Group 5 can see public threads, you see.

I've copied over the Realms maps for the Moonsea area from the OOC Forum.
You are 20 miles north of Zhentil Keep.

The village where you got your supplies was created on a whim because people wanted supplies and Guildmaster Black had nothing that small to give you. Since I expected no NPC interaction and wanted to move the game on I didn't bother naming it. I thought it less likely you'd try to burn the thing down that way.

The abandoned village you are heading towards is near the Dragonspine mountains.

Michaela, you can roll to overcome the MR of (19) the ogremage or you can wait for me to do it.  That won't effect anything, but I suspect that Neri will win the initiative with a +11 to her mod.

I'm also an inherantly vulnerable build, with low AC and average HP.

If it were up to me, I'd invest in some defensive spells or try to get my hands on something like a Ring of Protection. :P

Yes, but you're missing the point of the build. The first combat defensive spell Michaela can learn is Fireshield (Red) according to her roleplay applications...

The ring is entirely up to you. :p

Neri - you wouldn't believe that you were the one I was suggesting level into a Cleric would you?  Heh.  One of Mask's domains allows you to have hid/move silently as a class skill I believe.

Leveling Cyrus up, I'm going to keep going with him as a Cleric until I can hit Divine Champion.  So if this pans out, there'll be a Firebug, a Blackguard of Bane, an Assassin of Mask, and a Divine Champion of Talos.

That sounds like a great crew of evil people.  Soon the moonsea will be ours!!  I'll start level in cleric on my next level.  :)  So never fear a cleric of Mask will soon be born.
