Re: Battle on the beach

Being new to the crew, Tagen isn't sure if the tavern talk includes him just yet or not, so he goes about his duties as best as he able to figure them out. If he gets called on to join the others he will do so, otherwise he'll spend the evening checking out the town and picking up any last minute items he might need.

During his travels, Calgarvin comes upon the most recent addition to the crew and decides to suss him out. "Greetings crewman. Calgarvin," and he holds out his hand. "The captain mentioned he was looking for extra hands. I tkae it you're it. What do you do?"

Re: Battle on the beach

Tagen stops what he is doing when he sees Calgarvin approaching, then stands and takes the man's hand when offered, shaking it firmly.

"My pleasure Calgarvin, I'm Tagen."

Releasing Calgarvin's hand the new arrival continues.

"Right now I believe I'm here to acquire blisters and be barked at by the Mate, but when I'm not scrubbing the deck or hauling sail I'm a fair hand with a bow. I also have some modicum of skill in certain areas that, shall we say," Tagen flashes a sly grin, "is why I've suddenly taken such a liking to the sea."

Re: Battle on the beach

Calgarvin laughs heartily at Tagen's explanation, though he makes surprisingly little sound. After he quietens down, he continues, "Well you have probably come to the right place. Just be careful, though," and he looks around until he spots Varul a fair distance from him, "...of our first mate. He is a friendly enough chap when there's no work to be done, almost a gentleman, but he can be awfully forceful if you slacken off in your chores. You should come join us for a night of beer swilling. We have had some success on our mission and the ale will be flowing."

He will then bellow, "Those of you not assigned to a turn at watch may head fer shore when your duties be done. Be back on board afore first light."

Calgarvin wanders over to Varul, feeling secure in that he has finished his chores on deck. "Varul, will you be joining us? Having shed blood together, it would fitting if you, I and Brald would share an ale or two."

Re: Battle on the beach

Tagen also winds up his duties, at least he 'thinks' he has, and makes his way over to where Calgarvin and Varul are talking. Looking up at the huge first mate Tagen is still amazed at the sheer size of him, but addresses him anyway...

"Excuse the interuption sir, but since this is my first trip to sea, and since we'll be heading into town later, I was wondering if there is any type of special equipment I should have before we leave port? I have my bow and sword, which is what got me the job, but if you have any advice on the matter then I'm all ears."

Tagen just stands looking up at Varul awaiting his reply, prepared to duck or jump over the side if necessary.

Tagen listens to Varul's experience talking, then answers with a simple "Aye, aye, sir."

Tagen begins walking away, then stops and turns to Calgarvin as if he forgot something important. "Say, Calgarvin. You mentioned heading to a tavern for some beer swilling, which tavern might that be, and when I get there, the first round's on me."

"Very good, sir. C'mon Tagen let's go give ourselves a hangover," and Calgarvin scuttles off the ship. As he walks along the plank to the dock, he looks down at the water in between it and the ship and smiles to nothing in particular.

Re: Battle on the beach

Tagen heads off the ship with Calgarvin and wonders about his new shipmate and what got him into the business of pirate hunting. I suppose we all have our own reasons and stories to tell. Varul seems born to it. In fact, if the Swift Wynd weren't here he'd probably jump in one of those small fishing boats and set off after them anyway. Calgarvin is different though, he seems calm and well mannered, not your typical sailor. That's assuming I even know what a typical sailor is ..." Tagen breaks the silence with a question.

"So Calgarvin, how long have you been with the Swift Wynd?"

Re: Battle on the beach

Finding a tavern on the docks is about as hard as finding sand on a beach, and its not long before you are seated with a cold drink before the pair of you and a nice looking wench walking away.  The bar itself is fairly full, of course, what dockside tavern isn't full of old sea dogs, and young sailors fresh off the boat and ready to drink thier profits away.

Re: Battle on the beach

Before Vraul goes to meet Calgarvin and the rest of the crew at the bar....he jumps overboard and swims under the ship. The salt water feels good as his skin absorbs the nutrients and he re-hydrates. While under there he will check the hull of the ship as he always does......then if he sees nothing untoward, he will climb onboard and head to the tavern...

In the Tavern

While sitting there with Calgarvin and watching the view of the wench moving away, Tagen turns his attention to the crowd around him. He listens very intently for any gossip he might be able to overhear, whether it's about pirates or otherwise.

Re: In the Tavern

Calgarvin ensures they each have a tankard in fornt of them before he begins to speak. He takes a long, long drink from it and nearly drains it before placing it back on the table. "The Swyft Wind? Well, only a couple of weeks, maybe five. I was only with the ship a week or so before we were sent out on a mission of exploration with an old man and his map. Let me warn you now. Don't trust to old men and their maps. He waited until we had completed his quest for him, then transformed into a demon and meant to eat the lot of us, I'm sure.

"So, a few weeks on that mission, and straight back here. It appears that we may be sailing shortly, though, for some real quarry. My, my, but I've been waiting for this moment for a long time,"
and he drains the rest of his ale and orders another straight away.

Tagen sits drinking with Calgarvin, though not quite as fast as his new companion, listening intently.

"You seem pretty anxious to get going. Is that because you like being at sea, or because we're hunting pirates? You seem to have an unsettled score with them."

Re: In the Tavern

Vraul starts to walk for the tavern, his thought on drinks. He makes sure no hands try and nab anything form him, but he does not move out of the way of others that may be walking his way.

When he enters the tavern he will yell for an ale as he moves to the table Calgarvin is at. "And don't go making it one O those puny human mugs either."

Calgarvin stands when Varul arrives and waits for him to sit down. He then continues with Tagen, "It's the sea. It's a far different place to a deep forest, and my studies take me there. Being able to contribute to the closing down of pirate activity is an added bonus for me."

Re: In the Tavern

Tagen follows Calgarvin's lead as Varul enters, and stands until the first mate sits down. I think we're going to need a bigger table, he thinks to himself as the small giant takes a seat. When Varul's drink arrives, Tagen pays for it and then hands the wench a few more coins for the table. "When that runs out let me know, and keep this one for yourself." He tips the serving girl a gold in hopes it will keep the service at a steady pace for the night.
