Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

Winter snows come fast this year, catching many travellers by surprise.  Most inns are either booked solid for the season or have closed, awaiting fairer weather and the summer trade travellers who bring in the bulk of their business.

You manage to find a somewhat rundown little place call The Rusty Nail, nestled in the dock district between a fishmonger's shop and a drygoods shop.

Prices are a bit steep for so low-quality a place, but the demand is high, driving prices up.

The owner of The Rusty Nail is a sour woman named Prudence Colarn.  If she ever smiled, you think her face would crack. Anger and resentment seem to fuel Prudence.  You have seen her bitterly talk in harsh but hushed tones to several robed men of late.

Prudence Colarn:

Prudence's brother Arjun helps run the inn and makes sure the few fights that break out in the comnon room don't get too far out of hand.  It is clear he has some fighting skill.  It is odd that the robed men show up only when Arjun is not in.

Arjun Colarn:

A tipsy dwarf named Orgruth Ironteeth makes his home in the inn.  He has travelled far and wide and has many tales to tell and will do so at the offer of a stout drink.  It is rumored come spring Orgruth is off on an adventure into Mount Sar to the north of the city.  It is also rumored Orgruth is a Harper agent and his drunkeness is only an act.

Orgruth Ironteeth:

Rounding out the inn's more noteworthy residents is a tall imperious-looking woman named simply "The red lady" for here hair is red like flames and she is seen only in red dresses.  Her voice is soft and her manners mark her as a noble.  So what is she doing in a dive like this?

Some say she is a spellcaster of great power, others say a courtesean in hiding.

The Red Lady:

A bard comes in now and then to earn some coin.  He is more a tale-weaver than a singer, but he has been known to sing well enough to help pass a cold night.  His name is Falconer Baran. His accent tells you he is from Calimshan, though his skill is a bit pale for one from so far south.

Falconer Baran:

Re: Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

Food is plain as are the drinks.  There are some dusty bottles in the back of the bar, but no one has ever asked for them, so it is unclear what may be in them.

Prices are too high for the fare, but you don't have much choice, as these are the only digs to be found now that snows have come to the city.

The dry goods shop and rare merchant who comes in from the cold offer basic goods for sale at fair prices.  (Any item in the Player's Handbook short of heavy armor or exotic weapons is available at listed prices.)

Rooms cost a gold a day or 8 gold a 10 day.  Prudence has a waiting list, and is all-too-ready to make room for fresh tenants if any get out of hand.  The price of the room includes use of the common room, privies, wash water, and a basic breakfast of bread, eggs, and various meats with goat milk.

Re: Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

The Thayvian was quick to take up space in the Inn, and had booked himself for two tendays in advance.  He paid an additional two coins, as a not so odd request for privacy in his room, making it an even twenty gold pieces.

Once able to rest, Rjak spent less time in his armor, but always, rain or shine, twice a day he'd wear it to stay in peak condition.  As guessed, Rjak was a bear of a man.  He had a big beard that he kept neatly braided.  He tended to be quiet, and spent a lot of time to himself.

Currently he was writing while waiting on his morning food.

Re: Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

Damion was a bit uncomfortable in the inn setting, he liked to be out in the wilderness where he could be closer to his mistress but the weather had turned quite foul so he chose to stay indoors for now. He too paid for a tenday, most of which he will spend in silent prayer in his room or offering his services to any that needed the healing arts. He did not request payment for his troubles but did not refuse if one decided to donate.

For a good portion of his time in the inn he did not wear his armor or weapons, but he did dress in loose fitting earth-toned clothing, his wooden holy symbol was always out for all to see.

Kalmir spends the days wearing his studded leather armour. Unlike the others, his armour was light and unobtrusive enough to allow him to wear it all day. He also paid for a tenday and is currently in the common room eating breakfast.

Finishing his writing, Rjak lightly blows air across the ink to help it dry, and then inspects his work.  Satisfied, he rolls the parchment up like it was a scroll and then turns in the direction of Kalmir.  "Morning.  So big guy, where'd you learn to swing an axe like you do?"

Damion wandered down the stairs and headed into the common room. He was dressed in a heavy dark green shirt, a pair of heavy leather pants and boots. His wooden holy symbol swung loosly from his neck. The young priest walked over to the table where Rjak and Kalmir were seated.
" Good morning gents. Have you eaten yet?" he said as he took an empty seat at their table.

The door the tavern bursts open, letting in the howling wind from outside. Two clerics of Lathander quickly enter and shut it behind them.

Good morning They say to all present and make their way to the bill board, where one of them unfurls a rolled parchment with beautiful calligraphy painted on it. He tacks up the new bill on the board and nods to his companion when he is done. They go after that, leaving you with Lathander’s blessing before they exit back into the windy morning.

Rjak glared at the priests and took a big swig of his coffee when they came over towards his table.  It wasn't that he disliked the men, or even that he disliked their faith.  It was more just a case of him not being interested in their blessings right now.  Once they left though, his interest piqued at the papers.  "What do they say?"

Now he would take the priest's coins...

A few of the other patrons gather around the bill board to have a look. Two of them begin speaking to each other within ear-shot of Damion. They are well dressed men in their middle years and have an air of affluence about them.

Well Borric this looks a lot safer than traveling to that gods-forsaken marsh in search of that trifling bauble. His tone is rife with sarcasm.

Don’t play the fool; you know I have no intention of going myself. I am just at a loss on who to send. But this bill gives me an idea. We should hire a scribe to make some for us and then pay some poor fool to collect the stone for me He muses, rubbing his chin as he ponders the possibilities.

Well Borric if you have the gold to waste, why not? At the very least it should get you shut up about the damned thing. The other grumbles. They head back to their table to discuss the matter further.

Damion takes a second to listen to the two men before wandering back to the table.
Well, it would seem our fair priests of Lathander are in search of some bodyguards for at least two seasons to watch over a group building a new temple and farming village in honor of their god." he said as he took another bite of his breakfast. He then points at the two men that were talking while he was at the board."And I over heard those two talking of some item they are searching for."

The door opens and in walks a sun elf carrying lots of weapons; he shutters shivers and brushes the snow of his equipment. He looks up and smiles friendly to anyone looking, out from his backpack pokes a small curious head. He feeds it some nuts and it disappears back into the backpack, from where those that are close enough can hear noisy chewing.

He makes his way to the bar greeting the tables he pass (Rjak, Damion and Kalmir) with a friendly gesture. He places his back pack in front him and waits for a waitress to arrive.

He pauses for a few seconds as his face turns a bit more serious “I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation, I hope you don’t mind my interference? I take it you are adventurers? I myself am an adventurer and currently looking for work, perhaps I could join your group?” normally he wouldn’t be so forward, but money was short and he needed work.

Rjak has an accent, and it is from a very distant land.  "Interesting.  I've always admired elven craft.  I made mine too." Rjak, seemingly lost in new conversation pulls out his sword.  The blade is made of pure Mithril, and the hilt is carved out of polished obsidian and then beset with red, blue, and violet jewels of all shapes and sizes.

Etched into the blade and then filled with copper are dwarvern runes spelling out the name "Soulburn".  Stamped on the base of the blade is the Soulburn family crest.  Even a deaf, dumb, and blind elf could tell you that this blade was definitely a human's sword.  "I wouldn't call myself an adventurer.  I'm more of a merchant."

He makes a small whistle and out of his backpack comes a weasel; it curiously inspects the strangers using its sense of smell before curling up in Khidran’s lap “This here is Soe, she has been with me most of her life, I found her when she was only a few weeks old, sadly her mother was killed by lizards who used her for supper” closer inspection reveals Soe’s ears are moving so she is obviously listening.

OOC: I like that idea. I'll do it up.

Snow swirls around your feet and the bitter wind whips your cloaks about, threatening to tear if off at times. But visibility is good and you soon see the Priests leave another tavern just up the road from you. It takes a moment for you to get within hailing distance and they stop and turn after you shout at them a few times.

I’m assuming you are asking about the particulars of the guard duty;

Yes we are seeking able bodied warriors. The terms of service is a tenday up to two seasons and we pay 10 gp a day! There are many who would see this effort fail and I will not lie to you sir; you will see battle and you will see it often if you sign up for a tour of service. And that is not all; there may be other dangers as well. So far the acts of sabotage committed have been many and varied and mostly horrific. If it were not for the grace of our god it would have already failed but the choice is up to you sir. Come to our Temple if you want to sign up. Lathanders blessings are upon your sir. The last is said with a ritualistic feel to it and they continue on there way if you have no further questions.

You are under the effects of the Bless spell

" I must take my leave and pray to my mistress. I will return when I am finished and maybe we can figure out what we will do next." he says just before heading to his room.

Re: Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

His muscles ached, his lungs burned, his breath coming in ragged gasps and sweat poured from his brow in rivulets as he ran for his life. He could hear them coming not far behind him, but the echoes made it hard for him to tell exactly where they were. The sewer stank of refuse and filth but it still could not overpower the stench of burning flesh that seemed to follow him no matter far he ran; the stench of his fellows untimely death by a rogue spellcasters fireball. Five of them had ventured forth and only one returned.

Something small exploded in the center of his back, causing him to stagger and fall. It felt as though his back had been ripped open by the blast and he struggled to maintain consciousness while he climbed to his feet, leaning on the wall for aid. He stumbled blindly forward, managing only a few steps before the wall fell away. He fell again, this time towards the missing wall and hit his forehead on a metal pipe. His hands reached for it to brace himself and it was cool to his touch. Although his vision swam from the pain he had endured thus far, he was still able to make it out; it was not a pipe but a ladder. Tymora must be smiling on him this night for he had been lucky to make this far. With renewed strength he climbed for the surface.

He was struggled to push open the grate that blocked his way, he could hear them clearly now and they were very close. He glanced down every so often and his vigilance was suddenly rewarded with a brief glimpse of a face leering at him. It quickly disappeared but soon replaced with cabalistic chants and outstretched hand whose owner seemed to be suffering from malnutrition.  A small bead of orange energy streaks from that hand straight at him and his world exploded in pain…

The sound of an explosion sound right outside the Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern, rattling the windows and jarring the occupants. Screams and the sound of stomping feet filled the air outside the tavern, quickly followed by the sound of chairs scraping against the wooden floor as the occupants scrambled to their feet and rushed to the windows and door to get a glimpse of what was happening.

Damion was half way up the stairs when the explosion shook the tavern causing the young priest to steady himself on the railing. When he got his senses about himself once again his training kicked in and he headed for the door thinking only there must be wounded to tend to with such a blast. He rushed past his companions and to the door, which he flung open and rushed outside with no thought to the chilled air.

Khidran was wondering when the waitress would tend to him when he heard the sound of the explosion, he quickly turned and ran towards the door, only to see Damian pass him and fling the door open, he followed him out into the cold morning air, sword ready as he had learned.

Soe was trying to lure some food from Rjak and Kalmir by purring and brushing up against their legs imitating a kitten (it actually looked a bit pathetic), when the explosion occurred, before anyone could react she was in the backpack and only a pair of lurking eyes revealed her presence.

Re: Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

Just outside the tavern, the snow has melted completely in a 20 ft radius, with steams rising from every surface.  Beyond that it has become a wet slush. There are no people in that vicinity except for the wounded and the dead, but you can still see people running for the lives away from that area. In the center of it is a hole, and man come crawling out. He could easily pass for one the undead but yet you instinctively know he is still alive. His emaciated frame is covered but dirty shroud and its cowl covers his face. He pulls a dagger free from the confines of his robe and begins earching through the fallen as iff he is seeking someone amount the dead and dieing.

Two more figures pull themselves free of that hole, a Gnoll and an Orc, they are both dirty and decrepit yet their frames ripples with muscle and both wield vicious looking axe.

Find him. The cowled figure commands and they twobegin to search.

He knew he was slowly dieing. It wouldn't be long now, yet he took comfort in the fact that it would be under the sun and sky. The blue sky and a few white clouds filled his vision; despite the fact that his head hurt and his ears rang and his body felt as though it were on fire, that sight still made him smile. He turned his head to the right and he could see the hole that was once the sewer entrance. So he saw necromancer crawl forth and he saw the blade of a dagger flash a in the sunlight a moment later. He began to check the bodies, searching for him no doubt but he was going the inthe wrong way. That was good, maybe the watch would arrive in time to stop them. Yet his heart sank a moment later when the other two crawled from below. The gnoll was heading straight for him and he knew he was aboutto die...

You do not understand what he says but when he throws out a hand you know it was not something good.

Khidran listen to the cowled figure trying to determine what sort of spell he is casting, he wasn’t very experienced in the art, but he knew a spell when he saw one.  Quickly he determined it was time for action before his newfound friend was under the control of someone else, he didn’t enjoy the prospect of fighting against Kalmir, so he grabbed his bow and an arrow and fired at the cowled figure"Intercept the beasts Damion, then I’ll keep this one busy!" he yelled.

Damion's prayer is answered but the spell goes awry. He feels the magic of his goddess flow through his hands, into the ground, spreading out as it searches for some semblance of flora in surrounding area. It finds none. But something else happens instead.

The snow around melted patch on ground races in like a mini avalanche towards the Orc and encases his boots, rooting him place. The dumbfounded Orc stares at his encased boots and tries in vain to pull the free, from the seeming fragile snow.

The Gnoll skids to a halt when he notices the snow's odd behavior. He looks at the newcomers and begins stalking towards you.

Damion woke at the crack of dawn and dressed. He left the inn and wandered to the outskirts of town to a copse of trees. He entered the trees and knelt down placing his hands on the frozen earth. The young priest began his morning ritual of prayer. As the sun rose and the warm rays washed over him he felt the warmth of his goddess fill him. He was still relatively new to the ways of Mielikki even though he had been in her grace for most of his life so he reveled in the feeling of her presence.

After his prayer time was over he made his way back to town. His shoulder ached from the wound he recieved the following day in the battle with the sewer dwellers and he shivered as he wandered by the scorched land where they had come out into the streets. He was lucky that the others had joined in the fray and helped himself and his companions. Damion entered the inn once again, as he had done for the last tenday, and got the table his companions and he had sat at every morning since coming to the town.

Stumbling a bit as he comes down the stairs to the common room is the drunken dwarf who gave as good as he got - better, in fact - during the melee last night.

He nurses a swollen eye, but he managed to take out the orc that entered the inn with a well-aimed strike with his stone mug.  His deft work with a dagger across the grey-skin's throat let you know there is something more to this seeming drunkard than meets the eye.

Orgruth Ironteeth:

Orguth raises a hand and makes the number "2" gesture with his stubby fingers.

Prudence comes over to the table with a plate of two fried eyes, two pieces of dark toast, and two ales.

his usual breakfast.  She rolls her eyes as she leaves.

He slurps most of one of the eggs down, letting some of it drizzle into his beard, then follows up with a slurp of his ale.

He then leans back, lets out a little belch, and says quietly Damn wonder her brother's never around when them robed ones come by.  As if he knew when they was coming and going, eh?

And here the lad had hopes of becoming a paladin, too.

Finishing his ale, he follows up with a piece of toast dunked into the remains of one egg and stuff his mouth before he can say any more.

You managed to scare them off by killing the gnoll and orc and badly wounding one of the men in the grey robes.

Some property was damaged, but overall, no real harm came to The Rusty Nail due to your intervention.

The five seemed to be looking for someone who rose up out of the sewers, where the five were seen to enter the street, too.

Re: Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

Waking from his sleep, Iodaem sat up instantly, sweating all over.  It was a dream.  Just a dream, he thought, and soon began to calm down.  Tymora, grace me with enough luck to stop these dreams from coming every night, he prayed, and put his feet down on the cold floor.  Or Beshaba, turn them on some other unlucky soul but me, he added, thinking it enough of a morning prayer to his dual goddesses.  Getting dressed quickly, he then walked into the common room of the tavern, and after some deliberation, he joined the people he had helped fight off the strange creatures the night before.

"A good morning to you," he quietly said as he sat down, and glanced around, as if looking for someone in particular. . .  Did she leave already?

Re: Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

After a quiet and peaceful reverie, Authiel awoke early and took a long, relaxing walk before stopping some distance from the inn and taking time to reflect on the previous day and prepare for the coming one.  Finally she returned to the inn.  She stepped inside, her cheeks pink from the weather and exertion, and shook out her hair before shrugging out of her cloak as she scanned the room.

Seeing the men she had met the previous night, she walked shyly over to them, not really wishing to eat alone if she did not have to.  "May I join you?" she quietly asked in her sweet, lilting voice that still bore traces of her accent.

As the group speaks, eats, and re-visits last night's fight, a young man of about 16 winters with a tuft of thick red hair and some pimples on his face comes into the common room.

He wears a suit of leather armor that is too big on him and carries a dull short sword.  He has a new dagger strapped to one boot and a coin pouch that clinks of coin as he walks.

He sees you and Ironteeth and swallows hard.

He comes over to the table and clears his throat.

I am Kendrik Holtzwein and I seek a life of travel and adventure.

Are...are you taking on new partners?

Re: Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

Orgruth burps loudly, a bit of egg clinging to his lower lip shaking like a fall leaf on a branch.

Laddie, I don't change no diapers, and while I don't speak for this lot, I bet they don't either.

There's plenty a' work to be done in the spring thaw, like guarding caravans and such heading south or north.  Mebee train a bit more, go to temple for help, and come back when you've had some more exprerience, eh?

The boy's face turns red as the salty dwarf speaks and he almost trembles as he says in a proud but quivering voice Sir dwarf, I have seen some battle!  I have slain a creature - something like a goblin, I think.  That is where I got this dagger and some coin!

The dwarven traveller squints and gestures to the boy to show him the dagger.

Kendrik proudly displays it, handing it over relctantly to Ironteeth.

Hmm...'t'ain't of goblin or orc make, more like something you could buy at any one of a dozen stalls in the marketplace.

The boy goes to grab the dagger back, but it drops to the floor near Kalmir's feet.

I don't know where the monster got it, but I got it off the monster two nights ago, right near here!  Strange coins, too!

So I want more adventure.  I...I killed the evil thing, and I like the way it made me feel to do good!  I...I told my pa what I wanted to do, and he said i was old enough now to go off on my own, and now here I am.

I bought some armor that I coudl afford, and my uncle gave me his sword from his days at war...

And if all you can do is poke fun, to hell with you!

The boy's face is flush with anger and pride, and Ironteeth knows enough to back off.

He claps the boy on the back, waves for a drink to be served, and leans back in his chair, looking at all of you.

Prudence says nothing as she brings the boy a large cup of milk with a bit of honey and spices on top.

The boy nods in thanks and looks to you, as well.

As Authiel entered, Iodaem seemed to have found whoever he was looking for, and he gladly welcomed her to their table.  She looks so much like her. . . he thought as they ate breakfast, but he didn't say anything, instead watching the lady from the corners of his eyes.

Then, as the kid came to 'join' them, he looked the boy up and down, and frowned, but stayed silent for now.  He wasn't an adventurer, after all.

Kalmir clapped the youngster on his back. The boy was younger than Kalmir was when he left home to seek adventure. But look what happened to him, years spent rowing for pirates before he got lucky enough to escape. Men from Kalmir's village say, boy never too young to find glory on field of battle, but better you get seasoned first before you go fight with us. Kalmir not question your valor, but it take Kalmir years to become the warrior he is today, every day, every fight, makes a warrior better fighter but have to start somewhere.

"A life of "adventuring" as you call it isn't a life for everyone, young sir. There isn't always glory and riches to be had on the road. There is also death and all manner of horrors. But if you must follow the call of the open spaces then you should surely find a mentor."

Khidran greeted Authiel and the boy, and frowned of Ironteeth's manners. He himself hadn't been much older when he started joining the hunting groups back on Evermeet, but he'd also received training and were amongst his kin, he took a deep breath "Perhaps we should consider taking him in, I'd hate to send him out in the world with the wrong kind of persons, then I'd rather take him under our wing were we at least can teach him properly and protect him if needed?" he petted Soe and she purred again not seeming affected by the relatively large crowd that had gathered.

A stout man wearing robes marking him as a worshipper of The Morning Lord, Lathader, strides into the inn, sniffs, and looks around.

Spotting you, he nods and comes over to the table.

Well met, and I trust the sun has blessed you with its rays this fine morn.

Brother Peiter:

I am brother Peiter of the church of Lathander.  I seek those in need of employment who have skills at battle and who are not adverse to leaving the confines of Waterdeep for two seasons or so.

Pay is fair, and all food is given to you freely.  We may even be able to supply basic equipment, as needed, for the trip.  Mounts are also paid for by us, and you will be allowed to keep them, once your tenure with us is completed.

Of course, there will be several tests to make sure you are of the right heart and have the required skills for our mission.

If I can sit and explain my offer further...?

He indicated a chair, hoping you will let him sit near you.

Prudence Colarn, the owner of The Rusty Nail, comes over with fresh drinks and points to a small man limping down the street outside her inn.

Prudence Colarn:

See old Rejin there?  He owns a little place, danker than this hole, if you can believe it.

Those cloaked ones, they came to him about a ten day ago.  His son, a real big guy like Kalmir here, he threw them out on their ears after they tried to get Rejin to buy "protection service".

Two nights later his son has missing a leg and Rejin almost lost one, too.

Now he sure pays protection money.

If not for you folks...

She shrugs and returns to the bar.

Late in the afternoon, a slender halfling woman with black hair and a lute strapped to her back enters the inn.

She goes to the bar and has a few words with Constance.

Then she heads toward a large table in the middle of the inn and leaps atop it.

She takes her lute off, taps her feet, and sings a raucous song about a pirate, a priest, and a pickle shared between them.

Caralee Mistletoe:

When she finishes, she bows and shakes her hair.

Now that I have your attention, fine sirs and finer ladies, let me introduce myself.  I am called "pest" by some, "honey" by a select few others, but most know me as Caralee Mistletloe formally of Baldur's Gate, now of Waterdeep the last 6 years.

I am in need of some able-bodied mercanaries, and any who think they fit that bill can step up and claim an ale on me.

An older man clad in a fur-lined cloak with the bearing of nobility enters the inn and looks around, disdain on his face.  Four beefy bodyguards stand at the door, hands on the hilts of their short swords.

The man is about to leave when he spots you.

Taking you in with his pale blue eyes, he eventually shrugs and comes over to your table.

Nobleman:

Urm...I...I am afraid I'm not sure I...

Well, I've never done this sort of thing before...

You see, I am in need of a band of adventurers.  Trite sounding, I know.

But you see, I have a slight...well, a personal problem I would like taken care of as soon as possible, and as quietly as possible.

Can we...can we go somewhere more private to discuss matters?

Re: Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

You stay in the inn for what feels like months (time flies...) and once spring finally comes, so too come the caravan masters looking for riders to guard their wares and wagons as they trek north and south from the city.

Two in particular catch your attention.

One is a foul-mouthed dwarf with a braided beard and rings on every one of his stubby fingers.

He is Dalgrum Arncast and he is heading south into Amn and is looking to hire a team, giving free mounts and supplies to those who sign up.  He is hauling metalwares and basic goods to the war-torn land.

Dalgrum Arncast:

The other is a more refined (though that says little) human of middle years who is heading north to Silverymoon.  Accompanying him into the inn is his second-in-command, a wizard of imperious bearing.

The caravan master is called Erik and he wizard is named Rendell.

While they do not offer to let you keep the horses you will ride on their trip, the do offer to put you up for a ten day after the trip in a fine inn in Silverymoon and the items they are hauling - woods, spices, and dried fish - are of less interest to thieves and raiders than those hauled by Dalgrum.

Erik:

Rendell:

Re: Winter in Waterdeep - The Rusty Nail Inn and Tavern

OOC:

No, all these potential employers don't enter the inn at the same time.

Matter of fact, "Caravan Guards", "Heirloom", "Rescue and Escape" and "New Dawn" all take place in the spring after the long hard winter in Waterdeep.

Only "The Cloaked Ones" takes place during the winter.

Vote over in the OOC thread.

RP as you like here with any of the NPCs I have introduced here for more hints about the adventures, but you'll get mainly what is already over in the ARPs thread.

Investigation can take place, too, with appropriate skill checks when you go in and around the city to find out more details, if you like.

And the young lad at your table can come with you on any of the adventures, or he can well go off to find his fame and fortune on another adventure all his own.
