Re: Happy news!

I work with the theater program in one of the local high schools...they just closed a two-weekend run of Jeckyll and Hyde...which is some deep stuff for a high school program to tackle.  These kids handled it like champs...seven sold-out performances (they sold so well the first weekend that a matinee was added for the second), doing a show that I've had mixed feelings about (it's got some grwat music, and it's very demanding for the leads...but prior to this, I hadn't seen a production that didn't feel tedious, even the one produced by and starring several of my friends, that I painted the set for.  Maybe it was the way the director cut the show down (almost every song lost a verse, at least, just because they went on and on and on...), but even in terms of performance, this was just a really good show.

And I feel incredibly blessed to be involved.  I've been doing theater pretty intensively for a couple of decades, now...and working with these students always reminds me of the joy and delight I felt when it was new to me.  I seriously think they're one of the reasons that I stay young (a soon-to-be 49-year-old who routinely gets taken for being in my mid-30s...)

Re: Happy news!

Next show with the same group of theater kids.  This time around, they're doing The Little Mermaid (the Disney one)...and this is NOT a small show.  I think, when all is said and done, it's a cast of over 90 people.  And they're GOOD.

And I'm loving this show for a very different reason, this time around.  I'm a chronic Jack-of-all-trades (I get it from my dad), and especially in theater.  They initially asked me if I would do makeup for them.  Gladly.  Then they asked if I'd be willing to help paint some of the set.  Absolutely.  Then they asked me if I could make the costumes for Flotsam and Jetsam, and make Ursula's wig (sculpted out of foam).  Certainly.  And I've been helping with building and dressing the set.  Today, I started painting fish-scales on the leotards of all the mermaids (two sisters left, plus Ariel...)  If I can figure it out, I may also be helping the tech side of the show run, because they've got a pile of very nice body mics that are broken...and while I haven't fixed mics before, I've worked on enough shows to have a pretty good idea what the problem is...and solder well enough that I may be able to fix it.

I've never been so widely involved in a production before...and while part of me is flailing to try and keep up with all of it, part of me is all kinds of tickled to finally be facing this kind of challenge.

Re: Happy news!

Hey, it's a three-peat!  My jack-of-all-trades status is getting a workout.  We're renovating a haunted house ride, at work...giving it a facelift for its fiftieth anniversary.  Normally, I have little or nothing to do with the rides...but this one's a special case.

So far, I've cleaned up four wax figures...helped do extensive repairs on two of them and light repair on one more.  Today I finished repainting a fiberglass figure...kind of like a mannequin, but not free-standing.  When I started, it was fluorescent orange...now, it's all flesh-toned.  Next project?  Repainting a prop Egyptian sarcophagus.

And in the middle of all this, I'm making a dragon-helmet for a friend's cosplay.  DEFINITELY not getting bored with my day-to-day anytime in the near future...

Thought for the day:

Just passed Harbor Freight where they have a sale sign up and realized that in a fantasy world the phrase "Giant Liquidation" means something completely different.

Eh, they're both fun, cause huge messes, and usually end with somebody's house getting leveled. So pretty much the same thing.

Can I just say...

The Players in my game are absolutely fantastic! Every IC post is a gem in some fashion or another and they're so much fun to torment roleplay with. They rock the casbah! Seriously. They're awesome.

I'm a lucky GM. :)

Let me wish for you preparedness instead of luck.  When you're the GM, a Smith & Wesson always beats four aces...

Aw, what the heck.  Good luck in your new game!

Unexpected Rewards

Back in November, a GM on this site wound up in the hospital and couldn't continue their game. I offered to step in, and ran the game for a brief bit while they were out of action. They've been running their game again for a while now (with me assisting), and decided to get me a gift for helping them. I now own a nice, shiny, copy of Volo's Guide To Monsters.

Thanks, GB!

Health Food Can Be Bad For Your Health

I now know what the Heimlich feels like, and thanks to an ex-cop classmate of mine, I'm here to write this.

Health food is deadly: a fruiting carrot tried to kill me. <goes back to eating caramels>

That feeling you get when no one has posted all day, and none of your games have "new post" indicators, but you click on one and find that someone has just posted for you.

Feeling Happy

A year and about one week ago, I kicked out a toxic player from one of my games, and it was the last toxic player that game has seen since. I don't know how they do it, but I got to say I love my players to death for being so amazing!

Feeling Very Happy

After 16 months, one of my games has just crossed 20,000 posts. I don't even know what to say about that. That's simply a ludicrous number. I kinda feel like I should make a Ric Flair-esque "WOOOOO" at this point in celebration.

They Made It!

The very last of my teenager's friend group (AKA: my spare children) graduate tonight!

I'm so tickled to see them all grow up and get to where they can spread their wings and head away from their small-town nest.

Resident Evil:  Vendetta

Saw RE: Vendetta on the big screen last night.  It was very good.  The action sequences were awesome.  And what made them even better is that the heroes and zombies were mo-capped.  Their "action team" worked through all the stunts.

Pretty cool.  Reminded me of the ballet gun battles of John Woo movies.

Resident Evil:  Vendetta

Just got back from the store where an absolutely gorgeous full double rainbow was brilliant against the deep gray clouds.

And everywhere I turned, people were coming out of stores, cars, and homes to stop and gawk at it and take pictures.  It was a beautiful sight all around.

My tabletop GM just greenlit the most ridiculous Mutants and Masterminds character I have ever conceived of.

I'm going to need to color code sheets and it is going to be so ridiculously awesome.

My jerk of a cat and my overly friendly dog. Not sure if they love me because they have to or not, but I am glad I have them with me now.

Not sure how much worse I would be without them.
