Dear Dice Roller,

Die in a fire. Not just any fire, but the coldest possible fire so not only does it hurt, but it's going to hurt for a long time until you die. You have failed me for EVERY critically needed roll tonight for every one of my characters in every game.

Sincerely,
Me

Heh, that sounds like my own dice in real life. I've had far too many characters killed in games because what "what shouldn't have been rolled" ... was.  Think I've tossed something like almost $100 in dice alone into whatever hell the trash compactor ends up sending them to.

Total unmitigated, unresolved, unrefined weapons-grade horseradish.  Damn dice.

Horrible day.

I had a very disturbing encounter with a mentally Ill woman today at work. Unfortunately my job is a magnet for crazy and with my state's governor trying to gut the mental health system it's going to get even worse.

I left retail hopefully for good years ago.

there are in fact places that do get a large number of Homeless and Mentally ill that are not Retail. My place of work is one of them.

yeah homeless people have a larger ratio of unpleasant and disturbing to not than most other demographics. on the same token, however, those that aren't are typically rock solid individuals

Sad day.

I have a game that I've been running here since September 2002.  And now it's finished.  The story is complete.  There is no more to be told.  After almost 15 years.

And the last PC to post in it was also the first.

I'm a bit depressed about it ending.  :(

Sad day.

Long games obviously become part of our lives. My longest game was a mere 5 years and I felt lost for a while when that ended - and it fizzled out when players became ever busier.

Look at your achievement. Not only did you keep the game running for 15 years, you managed to complete the story, and kept original players in the game throughout. The fickle nature of gaming being what it is, something like that ought to go down in history. Seriously, have you thought of contacting the Guinness Book of Records for a stab at 'the longest running RPG'? You must be close with that one. :)

Congratulations on the successful completion of your game, and here's to the next one. Maybe you can break your own record?

Re: Sad day.

Well, I don't know if it's going to mean much, but well done, mate! It's quite an achievement to run a game that long!

As for me, well I'm a bit depressed myself. Can't name name any names, and I'm not wanting to throw any mud, but I got kicked out of my first Rpol game this week. To make a long story short, the other players didn't like how I was portraying my character, even though the GMs at one point did acknowledge that it was spot-on with the description. I wasn't legitimately trying or mean to piss everyone off, I just did.

In essence, I was trying to be too perfect and do too much in-character, and even the GM's got hacked off with me going off and doing my own thing even though it was a freeform game. The irony is there was a character in the same game which was practically the same sort of character as mine, very puffed up and superior acting, he was just there longer than I was, and nobody seemed to complain about him. The thing that really galls me though, is that I seemed to be taken the wrong way a lot, me staying in character and trying to be witty ended up being interpreted as "egotistical and pompous". Yeah, maybe so, but there are some pots calling the kettle black in THAT camp, if you ask me.

In a way, I guess it's for the best, the game had stopped being fun with practically every post I made being micro-managed and I was literally nervous to even come up with a post even though I liked the game and its premise overall, and I do realize that these clashes do happen and we don't all get along 100% of the time, but nonetheless I am a bit upset and bit hurt that it happened the way it happened. I'm not asking for forgiveness, I probably deserved what I got,but I would just like to say that I'm sorry, wherever you guys are, I didn't mean to get you angry with me, and I'm sorry it didn't work out in the end.

There, I've said my bit, carry on, good citizenry of Rpol, I hope things go better for you than they have with me.

Re: Sad day.

Sounds to me like the GM was partially at fault there. A GM should vet character proposals to make sure they fit in with the overall group dynamic, and should also let you know if your interpretation of the character's reactions is a little over-zealous.

However, if he did, and you ignored him...

In general, assertive maverick loners make great story/movie heroes and lousy RPG characters. They probably should be banned outright. It might save a lot of hassle in the long term. Keep em for solo games. :)

Why must it be so slow?

I've tried to get into PbP games for years now, YEARS, and the one thing that truly irritates me is why they have to be so mind-bogglingly slow. It's even warned about in many videos and 'getting started' sections of forums and PbP websites.

I've been a member of several different forums for years, and on occasion I can hang out somewhere on a Friday night and post all night with people. There will be hundreds of posts in the span of a few hours, yet this game format tells me that I have to wait 5 days for one person to post one thing along the lines of "I move up the road and hit the rat?"

WHY? It's not the format itself, not at all. Everyone should at least be able to post a few times a day, every day. People stare at screens all bloody day long, check their Facepunch every thirty seconds, tweet out what they had for lunch and that the birds sound nice and how they've just realized that Kanye West looks like a Cadbury egg, BUT THEY CAN'T LOG IN AND POST A FEW TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF ONE HOUR IN AN AWESOME ROLEPLAYING GAME??

The rage.

In reply to AchillesIV (msg # 799):

While SOME people can do all of that, not EVERYBODY can.

Most of us here have actual lives away from the site, and things like families and jobs take priority.

In my own case, for example, I'm lucky to have a couple of hours of free time in any given day, and I have other activities to pursue besides RPoL.

Actually the format is the reason why I run my games here. AS BBR touched on other things take priority. Sadly your argument takes some assumptions into play. While I do have a phone that "can" post, it is extremely difficult as it is VERY old. That being said I do not post, or even text, on the thing unless I absolutely have to.

I also have an outdoor/construction style job. If I were to look at my phone for longer than a minuet, there is a good chance I'm fired. After a long 10+ hour day. I have two kids and all the chores that go with it. PbP is the ONLY way I can even RP anymore due to time constraints.

I think the best course of action is to simply only join games that fit your time schedule. Some weeks I'm able to post once a day. Other weeks I have a hard time even posting every third day. My players knew that when joining and I have a great group (You know who you are you awesome people!)

Re: Why must it be so slow?

Lol let me surprise you bigbadron, I'm married with 2 kids and pretty busy as well, but sometimes the reason I don't post everyday is that I just don't log in, not because I don't have access to a pc or am too busy. I sought out PbP for the same reasons: time constraints and a lack of local players/interest.

What I'm saying is that a lot of people (almost everyone I know, in fact) sit at a pc or some internet-capable device for at least 30 minutes nearly every single day. Not everyone, but most people. Mrrshann and his construction work are a very justified exception, but I do feel like that's an exception. A lot of people have similarly demanding jobs.

It's just weird that it sometimes feels like a chore to log in and have fun. Even for many people young and old with more free time, the posting rate is insanely low and I feel like it could be much higher. I don't understand why EVERY PbP game has to proceed so agonizingly slow where your character literally does one simple thing over the course of a week.

Maybe I just haven't found one at a faster pace, but I've dang well tried lol. It seems like there are hardly any.
