It's a similar test and is still often referred to as an HA1C.  The methodology is similar but it's a more stable and accurate test.  I'm a Med Lab Tech so I occasionally nerd out over stuff like this.

Thanks for the info.  I'll definitely ask about it on my next visit (which should be soon - I'm due for a maintenance visit now.)

Fruiting kids!!!

I am so livid right now. Some bratty kids threw two lounge chairs and a whole bunch of towels in to the pool. If I find out who did it, they are getting kicked out.

Sadly it could have been done by 'adults'. I know a few otherwise grown up peoples who stoop to such things, usualy when alchol or missed medication is applied. (and sometimes just cause they are jerks at heart)

Yes, it very well COULD have been adults. However, when we've had the same group of brats running around the hotel, sliding on the tile like they're Tom Cruise, looking suspicious when hanging out around the market area, then basically disappear after their last trip to the pool before another guest reported the vandalism, it's a pretty safe assumption.

My upper blood pressure keeps not behaving. The lower one is near normal. I check them at the free blood pressure station in my pharmacy three times a week. My new doc put me on both Coversyl Plus and Coversyl but it's not working as well as it should. I'd hate to think of having to take more meds or higher doses, but not sure what else I can do about it.

I did a little google search on those and what I find is they are the same thing. Taking both does not seem to make much sense. Mind you I only looked at 3 websites and the click on tabs that never give enough information.

<sigh>

My husband came to me bragging about "clogging the toilet".  Funny, right?  Not when I found out he literally clogged the toilet.

Guess which one in the relationship has the handyman skills?  Yup.  Not him.

One nasty auger job later and I'm contemplating running the drain snake up one more pipe to make sure it doesn't happen again.

We have a really cheap and ineffective toilet here that gets clogged at the drop of a hat. Using buckets of hot water, drain cleaner, and a plunger are second nature to my roommates and me. It would be cause for a tenancy crisis if one of us said, "Oh, I don't know how to clear my own blockages." (No pun intended!)

Hats aren't the worst things that can cause toilet blockages. But if you're a plumber you already know that.

Enough already!

It's broiling hot in the desert here, although we've traded last week's record highs (116F+) for normal temps (~108-110F) and increased humidity (officially it's monsoon season now, but storms and rain have yet to make their appearances).

Not good weather to lose the main breaker on the house. No power = no A/C.

And not just once, but three times! In one week!

First time, I thought, well, it's age. House is about 20 years old now. So I replaced the breaker.

Second time, after some diagnostic help from the electric company's lineman, I thought, well, I just got a bad breaker -- only one bus went out, not the whole thing. (It's a very weird experience when half the house goes dead, and not in a neat or obviously divided fashion!)

Third time -- this morning -- after the profanity -- I'm turning it over to an electrician, because there's obviously a short somewhere. Of course, A/C techs and electricians are working overtime around here right now, with a 2-3 day wait time standard.

Sigh.

Enough already!

Funny enough, I came here to vent about my AC being out. We had power though. I'm also sensitive to heat. I get flu like symptoms in the heat. So we stayed in a motel for two nights. The temperature was very welcome! The daylight brightness coming from the window at night, wasn't.

The crew that was dreadfully incompetent on every step of the process, from flirting with my roommate, to eyeing our collectible cabinet, to quoting the wrong price, to getting the wrong part, to not accepting the money they were offered, to just not leaving. It was miserable to be without AC, but working with this crew was like pulling teeth.

I'm sleeping well tonight (assuming they didn't fruit up the AC unit) from not sleeping well in four days.

On another bit of badness, I had a player RTJ one of my F2F games and I politely declined. He then came back with a character sheet and said "You NEED to look at this character. After seeing it, you'll know why you can't refuse"

So I read the sheet. Basic nonsense. A character who thinks a power works one way when it doesn't (for the exact reason he wanted it work that way). So I handed it back and said "It's not legal. So yeah, still no dice." Then he proceeded to ask me how good of GM I think I am; how many campaigns I've run, where I see myself in five years a GM. I was taken aback so hard I almost wasn't born. When I recovered from my stun I just laughed. "Seriously? I've run more games than I can honestly count. And I have no idea where I'll be in five years! It isn't my career. So what difference does it make?"

Then the above happened and game got cancelled. Now I have four texts from him and just can't find the words to say "Sorry. We don't have room for you at the table." beyond saying that, which I already have. So I just said, "Again, I just don't have room, sorry"

I'm flattered to have the interest in my game, I just don't appreciate the odd attitude he's giving me, and the fact he doesn't realize I have a hard cap of player limit. For me, GMing becomes a chore with more than eight players, preferably four to six.

It's funny you mention that, because a player not accepting rejection (after pitching a character that was completely unsuitable) is something I hadn't seen at all until recently, and we had one too. They pitched a series of characters that were everything BUT what the wanted ad asked for, and then proceeded to argue that they needed to be given freebies (that no one else in the game had been given, at all) and have things house-ruled to bring their character up to the power level they were "willing" to play. And then argued repeatedly that the GM wasn't being "accommodating enough" to "work with them" to create a character that A) Was broken, B) Would have outleveled the other PCs in the game, and C) Wasn't even the role that was asked for in the first place. Like the game was going to suffer without their presence, and it was the GM's fault.

Like... really?

I'm unsure if I'm glad that it happens to other people too, or disturbed that there's more than one person with that sort of attitude.

It's called being Self Absorbed and Self Entitled. If you have ever worked in Retail or Service industries you will meet Many of these sorts of people.
They are the sort that try to force their way on those around them. Get 'special discounts' because they are 'more important' than those around them and in extreems, try to get in to closed stores just because they want something. Some go so far as to try to break in if they see employee's working but the doors are locked. (Commonly saying 'your doors are / were stuck' as they never can believe anyone would lock Them out.)
Seen this sort of behavior far to often to be surprised such people try to get in to gaming and pull this sort of self absorbed childish behavior and be completely blind to the fact that they are not liked nor welcomed by the GM or the other players for their behavior or attitude.

Just Once....

Just once, I'd like to receive a 30 day notice from my retirement accounts before that 30 days is already up so I don't wind up with tax penalties all the blueberry-strudeling time! Call me crazy, but I'm really starting to think they may not have my best interests at heart. :P

And who the tartlet waits 6 years to send a 30 day notice for an account flaw anyway?

Just Once....

Me, last week: Okay, are we set for our weekly gaming night?
Him: I might not be able to make it. In fact, probably not.
Me: Okay. We'll postpone, no big deal. (I do this because he's dropped last-minute many times, and I like to know when I should prep to have the game happen or not)
Me: We -are- getting together on Friday for my birthday, though, right?
Her: Sure! Hey, maybe we can even do some side-sessions then?
Him: Yeah! I'm really looking forward to it!
Me: Sounds good!

Me, yesterday: Just being sure, no game this week, but birthday on Friday, right?
Him: I might be free for gaming!
Me: Oh cool! I'll start prep!

Me, today: So, possibly game and definitely birthday this week?
Him: I can't game this week.
Me, having almost expected this: But birthday on Friday, right?
Him: Wait, -this- Friday? Probably not.

*sigh*

Trying not to get upset. But birthdays are a -big- thing for me. I always make sure we celebrate theirs, and this will be year two in a row in which, last minute, there's suddenly something more important / more interesting / better.
I try not to let the 'I'm only important if I'm GMing for them' feeling take over, because I know factually that's not true. But it's things / weeks like this that really stab me with that thought.

Two more days to wait before I might have an electrician out... but no confirmation on one, yet. Meantime, the electric company computer is apparently billing me by guesstimate, since the power is disconnected at the pole, but the account is still open.

What?

"It'll be corrected as soon as the power's reconnected and an actual reading from the meter can be taken. You'll be issued a credit then."

Ooookay. Damn good thing I dumped several hundred into the account between outages two and three, then. Didn't know I'd need to pay in advance for electricity I'm not yet able to use.

In reply to CrazyIvan777 (msg # 874):

I get that you'd really like to celebrate your birthday with these people (not sure why though!).  But next year, maybe you should make definite plans somewhere/with someone that doesn't include them, and if they question it, look surprised and say something like 'well, you couldn't celebrate with me the last two years, and at the last minute, so...'.  If it's for something ticketed, sure they can get their own tickets, and make their own arrangements etc, but make it obvious you're not counting on them, you're not going to save seats for them, or anything like that.

Belated happy birthday!  I hope you managed to enjoy it without these thoughtless 'friends'!

Re: Just Once....

OceanLake:
"Don't forget" instead of "Remember"

Why?

As a novelist, an English teacher, and a bit of an everything else (just a bit though), I'd prefer to ask "Why not?"

Psychologically speaking there's the idea that by saying "Don't X" someone is giving a command that's more likely to be remembered than something which sounds more permissive or suggestive like "Remember" or "Leave that alone." Whether or not this is good or bad in the eyes of the viewer is irrelevant unless it's articulated to the person saying "Don't X," and even then it assumes they're in a position and mindset to care about such a thing.

Linguistically speaking there's a whole plethora of reasons why one would use differing phrases to express the same idea. Whether it's for emphasis, or variations, or consistency, or because you believe one way is simply cooler than another way. Colloquialisms, regionalisms, idiomatic expressions, rhetorical nuance, and even dramatic timing are all perfectly valid reasons for using "Don't X" instead of "The opposite of X."

Philosophically speaking it could be that we as a society have been driven to focus on the negative aspects of life, or perhaps we are programmed to do so from birth. Perhaps it must be a conscious effort on the part of the speaker not to use "Don't X" because such a thing comes to use before any other usage, and we must retrain ourselves to think in ways different than those we have grown up with. Or maybe the individual has just been conditioned through their humours to believe not that "Don't X" is negative, but that it has a more positive connotation than other commands because it involves the word "Do" (albeit in conjunction with the word "not").

And, just as a guy speaking, why not?

Just Once....

Truly wondering if I can fruiting jack slap one of my bosses.  Past 3 days he has been on my asparagus like he thinks I belong in the Kentucky derby.  I've done my job for over 15 years, nothing has really changed.  All of a sudden I cannot do a dang thing right.  Yesterday the big boss asked if I would do a coworkers position as that person was covering for another who was being let off so they could work on the weekend.  No prob, just a shuffle.  I come in start doing coworkers job.  2 other coworkers who were right there yesterday when boss asked if I'd cover.  In walks the person I am covering for and instead of doing other coworkers job starts doing his.  I remind him he is covering.  he spouts off no he's not because he has a second job and that both shifts would overlap.  I let him know I was told there was a change.  okay 2 hours of this goes on and the boss who apparent thinks everyone on the planet is wrong except him comes in.  He asks me which shift I am working, and I tell him.  I tell him this is what I am told to do, coworker needs to be corrected.  This fruiting jackfruit states 'are you sure you didn't understand what he said?'.  I replied 'no.  It is not hard to interpret 'I need you to do bobs* shift tomorrow, he is covering Marthas*', Bob is doing Marthas shift...but he is not doing it'.  He walks off in a huff.  an hour later big boss comes in and wants to know why Bob has not done Marthas stuff.  I tell him the truth, he wants to do his stuff not Marthas.  He tells Bob to do Marthas.  Does my stinky boss come over and apologize at even give a mea culpa...nope.  He just gives me the stink eye the whole day.  So does Bob.  I go about doing what shift I was instructed to do.  When Bob asks me for help I send him to jackfruit boss.
