Technical Problems?

This is a minor gripe in the grand scheme of things, but this is a vent thread, so vent I shall!

The husband has been complaining of a "bad smell" in the house, particularly right when he opens the front door.  Mostly, I feel this can be contributed to the fact that the master bedroom, which is right across from the front door, contains both a cat's litter box and our half-bathroom, neither of which is cleaned as much as it should.  In particular, despite the fact he has designated taking the trash out as one of his household chores, that bathroom garbage doesn't get emptied every week.  For him, "taking the trash out" consists of hauling the filled trash and recycle bins to the curb, not checking to see if any trash cans need emptying into the big before trash day.

So instead of going on a more frequent cleaning regimen (which I would be happy to help with), he decides the best way to get rid of the "bad smell" is to buy one of those plug-in air fresheners and plug it in right by the front door.

Here's where I must mention that he and I have very different ideas of what constitutes a good air freshener/scented candle scent.  He prefers things that are sweet or heavy - cookie scents, baking scents, vanilla, etc.  I much prefer fresh, fruity, or floral - apple, lilac, pine.

Apparently he compromised by getting lavender-vanilla.  I hate it.  It smells like something that would be installed to attempt to deodorize a public restroom in a restaurant, or be an overly-scented perfume worn by an elderly woman.  Our damn Swiffer mop heads are scented that way (they were on sale), so I associate that smell with hard cleaning and a nasty job.  The scent combination is unpleasant.  It's like spraying pine air freshener in a bathroom after taco day - it just smells like someone pooped in a pine forest.

I told him I didn't like it, that I in fact strongly disliked it.  He said it was better than this elusive "bad smell."  It being so close to the bedroom and right where I had to walk by it a dozen times a day meant I got to be irritated by that nasty smell even in my sleep.  So, since the plug-in is under a bench and out of line of sight, I just unplugged the damn thing.  Since it had already sprayed on the bench a few times, I figured the scent would linger enough that I could get some nasal peace.

No such luck.  I came in after my night shift to discover he'd plugged the wretched thing back in, stinking up the whole bedroom and hall again.  I unplugged it and hid it on the top of a bookshelf, out of sight.  Once the stench dissipates, I'll consider getting the alternative scent he bought - apple cinnamon.  But I don't want my sleeping space to smell like lavender-vanilla-apple-cinnamon.

Mostly I think a mutual devotion to more frequent and dilligent housekeeping (and the occasional spritz of Febreeze) would solve this alleged "bad smell" that caused this fiasco in the first place, and that's what I'll be telling him this weekend.  Also, that when we go shopping for any air fresheners from now on, we're doing it together or not at all.

I got fired from D&D

So yesterday, I got fired from D&D.

My DM for my Tuesday night Adventurer's League game contacted me because he "couldn't help but notice [I am] becoming more and more frustrated during sessions, talking a lot more at the table about non game things, stopping play a lot more to "correct" non issues, or simple things I forgot." He asked that we "talk about it before it becomes a real issue at the table!" (I'm cutting and pasting quotes from our FB chat.)

Yes, I had some mild frustration with a few things, but nothing was a deal-breaker. Strahd's a bipolar looney-tunes, and that can induce hair-pulling. I was upset after the perfect magic weapon for my fighter was distributed with a random die roll, even though the entire table agreed I should have it except for the ranger who ultimately did get it. I got quiet when I lost, mourned my crushed hopes, and moved on. Certainly didn't blame the DM.

Yes, I cross-talk at the table. Guilty as charged, thank you for bringing it up, I commit to being quieter.

No, I don't remember "stopping play" for corrections. Please provide me with an example, and I'll happily take responsibility within reason.

Yes, I have some mild frustrations with the DM always saying "let him play his own character" when all I'm doing is helping the three players who are brand new to D&D remember some basic powers to help them fully realize their potential. When the Level 1 barbarian doesn't Rage, she'll probably die.

Yes, there are former players who are no longer at the table who had frustration levels go to high for too long and things got ugly mid-game. I've been playing for decades, and that happens.

Finally, I apologized profusely for everything that was my responsibility and committed to correct the offending behavior. I considered all these minor issues, and I offered an easy solution.

So he starts talking about the challenges he had getting the group together, how much time and money he has invested in his hobby to DM for free, and that he's very happy with the group that has come together. So far so good.

Then I get this:
quote:
"I have to ask myself, as an amateur DM, investing his own resources into other peoples fun, am I willing to deal with peoples drama? Having read everything you shared, I am at the conclusion that I really don't want to have to deal with adversarial players. Some of the things you disagree with are things I know I am not willing to compromise on, the reason being that no DM can ever truly make everyone happy with their DM style. However, I am in the position to cut my losses with those who arent on board, and would rather focus my time and energy on those who are having fun and can bring themselves to accepting my DM style. After all, you arent paying me and I am under no obligation to cater to anyone's preferences. I feel as though I have put forth effort to be a friend to you, beyond the game table.  However as your actions have shown me, this is all for naught.  I do not feel you respect me as an equal at the table.  On that same note, I do not seek to further attempt to gain your respect as it is not something I value any longer. Therefor I have come to the conclusion that I no longer want you at my table. Feel free to make your own Tuesday group. I wish you all the best man And am available should you want to vent, or voice any disagreement, just know my decision is final and unrelenting." (emphasis mine)

This is followed up with:
quote:
"I also just want you to know that I harbor no ill will towards you man."

I am in complete Hostess Fruit Pieing shock.

I ask him what exactly I said in my plea to offend him. His response was that he "just wanted to hear me out."

I ask him if he had already made his decision before he talked to me. He said, "Of course not." Again, I ask what I said to lead him to believe I don't respect him. He says, "It had nothing to do with what you said. I judge people on character and actions. Those actions were observed at the table."

WTF?! Sounds sure as heck to me like you made your cherries jubileeing decision way before you contacted me for this "talk."

The remainder is a further deteriorating spiral into this dude's madness as I try to discuss the logistics of me trying to run a table in the same store on the same night, as that's the ONLY night I can do it. I also ask him what he's planning on saying to the others, because I feel it's only fair to make sure that those who remain are clear about the expectations that he for all intents and purposes sprung on me in his own frustration. If I'm going to be the head-on-a-stick in front of his castle, he sure as heck better be overt about what it means. I also don't need him dragging my name through the mud when I may be interested in starting my own group.

So now my one face-to-face gaming outlet is squashed under the heel of a mad DM's boot, and I'm really plantaining upset about it.

And the irony: I respected him until he told me that he didn't think I respected him, and now I don't respect him for not showing me the respect to let me know why he thinks I don't respect him. :)

Sorry for your frustration and all. Got to say loved your choice of 'fruit' for the explenitives.
I suggest you talk to the other players on your own and see what they have to say. Try to keep your bridges from burning any further. Other than that I can't think of anything to add.

What do my former DM and Strahd have in common?

One is a bipolar, soul-sucking despot ruling over an imaginary land with an iron fist, and the other is a fictional vampire.

Hmm, never posted here before so I figure I will give it a try.

So gamin has been my favorite and most relaxing pastime since I was in high school.  Lately however it has been becoming more and more irritating and aggravating to me. I am not quite sure what to do about it but I am considering just stopping altogether.

My main gaming group plays one night a week and used to be fun and interesting.  Now it has degraded to the point where at least every other week (although it is probably more often than that) I get to sit and listen to tirades about feminists being the worst thing int the world, or how white privilege doesn't exist, or how drumpf is not actually all that bad a president (or actually how great he is).  There is one player in particular that whenever he opens his mouth something comes out that hurts my brain.  I listen to them, their examples, and their definitions (that are completely inaccurate) and just get more irritated.  last week we literally had about 30 minutes of actual game time in a 7 hour session and I was beginning to expect them to break out a confederate flag and possibly burn a cross.

So to alleviate this I have two games that run haphazardly on Sundays.  The first one was great, we have been playing for years (level 19 mythic 4 in PF).  Now we are playing far less frequently so half the session is devoted to remembering where we left off.  The player with the most involved plot line doesn't show to most of the sessions (claiming school yet there is plenty of time for PC games).  The rest of the game is spent (seemingly) attempting to not get any of our objectives done by continuously trying to find new things to do before completion of older goals.

The second Sunday game is one that I run.  I spend a decent amount of my time coming up with plot lines for it only to have players consistently bail on it because everything in their lives is more important than the game.  One player tells me "I'm too tired" the day I show up hung over with less than 5 hours of sleep.

Then I try to supplement with rpol.  I spend hours coming up with a concept, followed by writing up a backstory.  I don't get in, or I get in and the gm suddenly had something come up and can't run the game anymore, or I get in and one person becomes a complete dingleberrylichlover from the get go.

I try to start up another game during the week with a couple other friends but one of them has no desire to play ANYTHING remotely interesting for two of us (out of 4) so that falls through.

So then a friend of mine starts running a new PF game and we sit and discuss my concept for hours.  I make my character, suddenly there are rules that aren't allowed because they feels they are unbalancing, yet they are running the game to play test a class that another one of their friends made up to see if it is broken.

ugh......

A break is not a bad thing. Makes it less likely you will go postal on those around you.
Sometime though you may have to set a house rule to leave the Real World at the door. So no politics, religion or anything not related to the game. Your a GM not a therapist [if you Are a therapist, then remind them you get Payed to listen to such things and if they want to vent, make an appointment.]

That's really rough. Like Shado said, a break can be a good thing, both from tabletop games and from the circle of friends you hang out with. It can help a lot to go out and do a Meetup group or something to mingle with some fresh people and have new conversations, it can also make hanging out with old friends more pleasant as you'll have new things to talk about. (I can sympathize with this too much myself, lately hanging out with the same social circles each week has started to feel like a slog as the same topics get discussed every week)

Contagion

Last month, I reported one of the IT guys for going around with exposed, untreated ringworm while updating computers.

A couple days ago, an odd persistent itch began between my shoulders and creeping up my neck. Last night at the gym, I saw him! Ringworm IT Guy! And he didn't wipe down any benches he used. I reported him to the gym management and he was asked to leave.

I have an appointment tomorrow for the itch. I don't know if it's really ringworm (I can't see it properly) or if it's just in my head, but I am livid.

In reply to Eggy (msg # 1131):

Good god! LMAO. I actually LOLed. And here I came to vent!

Well poo, I don't feel so bad now. ;D

Anyway...yeah, I came here to fruit curse, but I'll refrain...for now.

My ceiling fell in. It's sort of my fault, like some low non-zero percentage, but still. Long story short, our home is technically unlivable. By any code, it should be legally require repair. BUT...and this is my grace for you all saying "THEN FIX IT!" We've tried. Many times. My best friend's parents own the place. They have us in contract, but they've been sticklers and...honestly, downright mean people. But here'
s the thing. They violated the contract, so my friend and I pay zero rent. And...well...my fault comes for not just moving out. I mean yeah, it's horrible. Leaks, vermin, MOLD, YES mold. But I live in an area of very high rent. Saving $800 a month, so I can have dental work done (which NO dentist will accept payment plans without a BANK loan, which I have no credit [as credit is something poor people should never use--it's evil])...sorry for the tangent, anyway, money that would be toward rent is huge for that bill being paid that much sooner, since I have one good tooth on the top and very crudely functional bottom teeth. So I stay here, to "mooch" off the "blackmailed" people that wouldn't let US fix the damn leak because "it has to be done right. I'LL fix it" No, you're not! IDIOT. You literally put drywall and stapled it over the hole in the ceiling, you fruiting idiot. The LEAK.. the thing that MADE the hole, is still leaking. God condemn fool, and lazy fruit!

Now an infestation of roaches fell on my bed. YES, it was nightmarish. So...I'm not happy. But I'm SOOOOO close to having the $2000 (AFTER insurance D:<) to get dentures, and I'm 35! So I'm not happy about the fact it's been one abuse relationship after another. I need to eat damn it! I haven't been able to enjoy food since before I was 17.

If I wasn't within a month or two of getting that money I would start packing tonight! *sigh* But medical bills take the lion's share where I live. And my teeth are horrible. I also need care for my mental illness and PTSD, and no homeless shelter will allow my opposite sex, FRIEND live with me, and medicare won't help give a live in aid solely because my friend has always kept good care of me, so there's no reported "incidents" so if I live in group room, and I black out...*UGH!* *sigh*

If I just deal with one problem though, the sh... poopy house I can cope, but when I won't...it causes a chain of moderate problems, that which the sum is far greater than the house burden alone. WE don't live in good times, right it certainly ain't, but truth it be!

Simply put....I'm pissed! WE would FIX the leak. WE would pay for that. THEN rent. But no! The 78 year old man, who I legitimately think is senile, and as non-hyperbolic term, LITERALLY not all together man; doesn't believe a (5-star review rated) professional can be trusted.

Then again, maybe he's mentally ill and has always been so, he's also been paranoid his whole life, thinking the US Army still has him as a sleeper agent from the bay of pigs, that minorities are stealing his garden manure, and when my roommate was a youth, requiring her to have all the blinds closed, have no friends, be inside at 4 PM, and never talk to the neighbors or speak above an "inside voice" which was barely loud whisper. And then beat her anyway! He has an utter god-complex....so the leak remains, and will remain unless his wife, who I hear is being abused now (D:<)....can help seize authority. As soon as he is fruiting dead though, I'll spit on his grave. I wish almost daily for some entity to grant that deathwish. Domestic abuse alone warrants that, but all this just makes me sweat venom for the man.

Ahhhhh....so yeah...*big sigh* that's my lovely news. Sincerely though, the prior comments did bring levity. I needed that.

Re: Aaaargh!!!

Your description of your land lord sounds like he is Very much insane and possibly dangerous to those around him. Everything there points to the fact that he has been so for a Very long time. As such it would not take much to have him put in a special safe place (hospital with padded walls) and that would allow you to get the worst of your place fixed. Or you could just remove the old building and put in a prefabbed building - I have read of what is basically outbuildings being turned in to homes in some states. (this was done to battle homelessness and it seems to work pretty well.)

I get the part about the teeth. I am in a bit of a catch 22 for that myself. I got 7 teeth that need to come out, but have an adverse affect from things like valum and laughing gas (I get panick attacks even With those things) and as such sedation is the only answer. BUT I got a bad heart and because of that I can't be sedated as it may kill me. So I eat with a grand total of 2 working molars and 1 top front tooth (all my front bottom teeth are fine, so go figure). I got no molars on the bottom left of my jaw, the crown on the last of those broke off a couple years ago (2016). Same problem with getting that fixed to, sedation plus bad heart ... Ironically I have the money, but only because my Dad died last year and left me a trust Specifically to help with such problems (medical trust). The wording of the trust allows for some other uses, which is great as it's paying the bill on my car insurance and taxes for the car to. (Huge help that really - I like having a car.)

In reply to ShadoPrism (msg # 1133):

Oh yeah! That YOU! Yeah, I meant to reply to that vcnt. Because I'm probably one of the few people who knows it, and you liekwise.

Yeah, as far as putting Bill away (Anne's father and our landlord) been there, tried that. Three times.Once/twice here, and then follow up to which that said "Nope he checks out, and seems very safe. We have no grounds for admisison" and the once to the Arizona law inforcment, which come to find out LOVES Bill and he could do no wrong. He's good  ol' boy and has an unofficial invitation to go shoot off at the range any time.

Bill is salseman, or was for over ten years. A sociopath very likely. We ARE going to move out. But right now it's lily pad in murky waters, it';s better than risking the unknown. Not to mentioned moving costs too. And that where we live will impact Anne's (my roommate's) school schedule, because she' barely squeeing by to get home, get toi work,m and get to school. Some variation in travel time could screw up both work and school.I mean, yeah, eventually she'll HAVE to deal with it, but it's not worht it now. She's LESS than a year from graduating. And then it's likely we'll be out of here, of Bill will be out of our life at least. The man is basically going blind and goes 90 on the highway and changes lanes violently. I'm hoping no one else is hrut, but that man can only defy death so long. HEck, he CAUSED an accident when he was driving us to the car repaire for OUR car. I was livid. Some poor fool goes into the ditch and I just stare gaping jawed, while Anne is crying out for her father to "Look out!" and her mother is prattling on about "Well that's just how they drive here./ ANYWAY, so I was watering the plants..." totally oblivious, and I'm just speechless as Bill nearly causes an accident and runs yellow light by speeding up. I am pie-faced how he gets off with zero kharma, just astonished. So either age, chewing tobacco for forty years, his remission of cancer, or disaster will kill him. He's a slippery SoB though. That's for sure.

Anyway, yeah, he's bad news. I never should have accepted the invitation, but like I said, he's salesman. He was acting very generous to Anne, and we thought, ya know what, he' can change and be better, might as well give hima shot.Anne is very forgiving, and very generous. I was AWLAYS hesistant, but even I fell for the ruse, just so he could have control. I could tell many stories, and some are even found in the other vent thread. So yeah, I now have zero trust of the man. And less for the mother, albeit she's a victim too.  Anne's parents are spitting images of my own. Sociopathic abusive father, immature over dramatic older brother mooch, and enabling naive mother. Just lacking the alcoholic insecure arrogant older sister.

Anyway, We need to move ASAP. And I just needed to write this susie-pie out to really see it. It's being unable to put out the fire, and so refusing to leaving the building too. So yeah, no later than next year we're out of here. Unless the gods of Creation decide today is a good day for a Botch for Bill. ;p

Re: FW: RE: RE: Re: FW: FW: Re: AAAARGH!!!

What I'm about to say may sound small, but it's just the start of a day and I'm not looking forward to the rest of it now.

I was supposed to be in the clear. I really was. Just finished my last classes (besides student teaching) and so my semester was over. Other people are finally settling in too, so some of my personal projects could finally get off the ground (and I could get back to gaming). Yes, there were some troubles with some videos at work, but that's work, and my work troubles are pretty minor in comparison to a lot of folks (even in comparison to my own work troubles in the past).

But this morning I woke up to a dead phone (despite it literally being charged to 100% right before I went to bed, and I do  mean literally 100%, and literally right before bed). Luckily, I wake up automatically aabout 15 minutes before my alarm goes off every morning, so I didn't run late to work or anything, but my phone doesn't even show me what the grape took up all of that battery life (the percentages only add up to about 50%). Normally it does, but not this time. So I've got to test it now to figure it out.

But the bigger and worse news I woke up to this morning was that, after months of waiting for an artist to get free from other obligations to work on a project with me, he apparently finally actually looked at the project and said "Not for me. Sorry." I am a patient person. I really am. But he got free two days ago, posted some WIPs yesterday, and then this morning I woke up to "Sorry, but I'm leaving the project. Not my cup of tea." And, just... it feels like this was the plan from the start, you know? Like he was just stalling as long as he could before needing to say no... But that's my paranoia talking.

So, now I'm down an artist, my phone is possibly dying (that or an app is invisibly taking up all my battery), and it's only 8 AM. This day had better turn around...

And, you know what? I'm gonna try to start that turn right now.

What did the green grape say to the purple grape?
"BREATHE!"
