That's actually a lot of crimes you're discussing there. Like, most of them.

Also you're making very little sense.

Do you mean to say it wasn't descriptive, as in not "most authentic mexican" or "most recognizable decor".

Or are you making a prescriptive argument? As in, that "unique" prescriptively eschews any need for qualifying it as "most" any more or less than "least".

It's an especially egregious misuse of the word.  Nothing can be the "most" unique, it is either unique or it is not.  Uniqueness is not a spectrum, it's a binary.  Something unique is neither more nor less unique than anything else in existence else it is not unique to begin with.

See Strunk's Elements of Style.

Is it My Imagination...

or is there a full-blown summer slump in progress around here?

Part of it is, I'm sure, my recent so-called life that does not seem to be going my way at all, but that's starting to look up a bit.

Nothing to it but to do it, I suppose.  Keep on keepin' on, and all that jazz.

In the words of Malcolm Reynolds, "I aim to misbehave."

I'm a start me a new game, I think.

Oh, wait...

Is it My Imagination...

I have a question, why isn't there a player option to remove yourself from a game? It's irritating to ask to be removed from a game and then still have it pop over and over in your sticky list.

Is it My Imagination...

In reply to PCO.Spvnky (msg # 1220):

Because we believe that the GM, and only the GM, should have control over entry to, and exit from, his game.  Just like we wouldn't let a player add himself to a game, we don't let him remove himself.

That said, if you ask the GM to remove you, and he doesn't do it within a week, then you contact the Moderators, and include a link to the in-game thread where you asked the GM to remove you.

From the FAQs:
As a player, I want to be able to remove myself from games.

As only GMs can add players to a game, only GMs can remove players from games.  If you'd like to leave a game, be sure to tell the GM and ask them to remove you from it.  If they do not respect your wishes within a reasonable time, contact the Moderators about the issue.

I had a really cool Conway's Game of Life background for my Galaxy phone. I say had, because it just disappeared. I can't find the files anywhere and it doesn't seem to be available in the Play Store. Problems don't get much more first world than this, but I'm bummed.

Well, maybe this is an incentive to program my own.

P.S. To make matters worse, I believe the above sentences have zero typos.

One of my PC rolled 18 d20 so far in my game. He rolled 6 ones, and 2 twos. It's getting kinda... absurd.

Evil d20...

In reply to gorchek (msg # 1226):

I had one truely epic roll once - rolled 20D20's at the same time. They all came up 20. Was for multiple actions in a tourneyment - the GM in the end disqualified me though cause I was playing a mage (who would have won the Entire tourney with that awsome roll - using his dice no less).
That was also the last time I and the rest of the group, let him GM a game (he tended to get pissed when we won at anything and then pulled stuff like removing my win.)
Still the odds of that single giant roll are beyond my ability to estimate and I have Never done anything like it sense (to that scale at least, on smaller scale with lesser dice sure, but not D20s.) Thinking back, it's to bad I did not go buy a lottery ticket that day, probably would have won with that level of luck.

The odds are something like 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (yes that's a 1 followed by 26 zeroes, about a million times the number of stars in the observable universe. Or a number so large that if you tried to count it you wouldn't reach it before the universe were be a billion times older than it is now.)

That is such an improbable event that it's on the scale of winning the grand prize in the lottery every week for three weeks in a row.

With a roll like that, you should have not only won the tournament, you should have won the hand of the king's only daughter, too.

No wonder you kicked the GM out!

1st level female mage. Won the Whole tourney.
Had I been the GM, I would have claimed some outside (possibly godly agency) had interfered (cause lets face it, reality wise that would be what it would take for such an event / roll to happen) and used that as a 'legal' excuse for nullifying such a win.
He could not say I cheated as there were 5 others at the table who all witnessed the roll to. Definitely a once in a life time roll.

Definitely a once in a life time roll.

And that is why that GM sucks. You guys witnessed something that perhaps no other person on earth has ever or will ever witness again and stole that moment away from you.

I am reminded of a story from my college D&D days. The party was ~7th level or something like that and ran afoul of an adult black dragon (CR waaay too high). This was a cinematic moment where the party is introduced to Big Bad early on, runs away etc. So the party is running away and the wizard has expeditious retreat so he can keep up with the party and still shoot spells over his shoulder. He had time for a single spell and just for fun, he threw a phantasmal killer at the dragon.

Now for those that don't know, Phantasmal Killer is a spell that can potentially cause someone to die of fright but only if they fail about a bazillion saves. First the wizard had to beat the dragon's spell resistance. Passed it with a 19 or 20... Then the dragon had to pass it's next save. Anything but a '1' would do it. GM rolls a 1 right out in the open. Okay...the dragon is scared but there's no way it could fail it's heart attack save and.... another '1'.

Dragon has a heart attack and the fleeing party hears an earth shattering "whump" from behind them.

This was the GM's Big Bad and his whole campaign was derailed when it died but you know what, like a hydra three more campaign opportunities sprung up from that corpse. The next session was just the party inventorying, identifying, and dividing up all the magic items. Then the next session was a big plannning session on how the hell they would cart back mountains of gold and gems without anyone realizing what had happened. Then came the shopping spree...

Basically while the GM lost his plans he was able to give the players a truly amazing story and ended up with over a month to replan his adventure. As for power levels I think he just treated the party as a level or two higher due to the sheer amount of magic and gold the players had. Now you have a dragon's hoard but how do you guard it? Who else is going to come looking after it? The GM didn't have to scrap ALL his plans but a bit of allowance for the story to surprise HIM gave everyone involved a memorable story to keep with them for their entire life.

How dare that GM rob you of an epic story just because he wasn't happy with how lucky you rolled.

Getting back in shape

Just don't get out of shape.  The older you get, the harder...
Picking up SCA Fencing again when 50 and out of shape is an eye opener.

Right now, I'm just doing a simple drill.  Advance, Lunge, Advance, Advance, Lunge, Advance, Advance, Advance, Lunge.  Then Retreat, Lunge, etc. until back at the staring point.   5 reps, each arm.  (Yeah, we work on off-hand too.  I hate it.)

Oy, am I winded after just 10 reps...

No good choices

This is not about me, but about my sister.  She and her boyfriend are facing a really hard choice, and there's no good answer.  They have four cats, and two of the older ones have been sick for two years.  One of them now has a confirmed cancer diagnosis, and they've decided not to pursue chemotherapy.  The cat is now on pain meds, and when on them, is fairly good.  But when they wear off, the cat clearly has some pain and knows something is wrong.

In a week, my sister and her boyfriend are going on a trip that will last three weeks.  During that time they'll do some sightseeing, go camping for four days in a remote location, and then the boyfriend is having an elective surgery.  The timing of the surgery is crucial because right now he has the time off and the insurance to cover it.  When he takes his new job later this year, all that changes.  It is something he could put off, but if he does, he would forfeit several expensive appointment fees.  Putting off the trip would also mean losing the deposit on the place they're renting, and several other things.  It's money they really can't afford to lose.

They're afraid to leave the cat alone, because the cat-sitter would have to give the sick cats a fairly elaborate rigmarole of medications.  And there's the additional chance that the very sick cat could take a downturn while they're across the country, or more worryingly when they're camping and out of cell service range.  They wouldn't want to have to have a stranger make the decision to put their cat down.

They've talked about having the vet come and put the very sick cat down, being as with the diagnosis, there is nothing about the situation that will improve.  Only the pain meds are making a difference (that and their affection for the cat).

The "best-case" scenario involves the very sick cat having a health downturn before the vet visit in a week, them putting the cat down so she's no longer suffering, and then getting on the plane the next day for this trip.  Obviously the trip will be either fraught with sorrow and guilt (if the cat has to be put down) or constant worry (if they don't put her down) that she'll die or get very ill when they're not there.  But if they cancel the trip, they're out a huge amount of money, a badly needed vacation for both (they both work their asses off), and a surgery he's been wanting to get for years.

We talked about it over the phone, but I can't really give her any better choices, other than to commiserate about how this is such a sad situation.

No good choices

I can't speak for that situation but I can only put myself in that scenario and hope an explanation of the thought process helps.

Pets are ultimately mortal and while you can delay the parting it is going to happen. The difference is that now they can choose how that cat's last moments are spent.

They could take sometime to spend their last moments with the cat and give it a proper goodbye and then let it pass peacefully in its sleep. It would be tragic, too, but it sounds like the prognosis is that it could go south at any time and I would think it would be better to have the cat in a place surrounded by love and relative comfort than try to prolong its suffering. It might sound cruel or heartless but I would rather go that way. Face with months of uncertainty and pain when the outcome is pretty much a given I would rather go out with a bang rather than continue to be a burden on the ones that I love :(
