Norse Mythology DnD

I know that in many ways DnD has its fairshare of Norse inspiration, or at least say Lord of the Rings which has elements of Norse mythology in it. But I was wondering if anybody ever tried to play a DnD game in a world that was more strictly based on Norse mythology.... Say the elves are more like the "light elves" from Alfheimr, the Gods are the Norse Pantheon... dwarves are more from their own realm (possibly even actually the same as dark elves even, according to some interpretations of the Eddas)...

Anyway, seeing as I just wanted to start throwing this around as an idea, I thought the Community Chat is the best place... I'm not necessarily looking to run this game myself, at least not at this stage. Just more looking for inspiration and thoughts, ideas....

Back in the 2cd edition days there was a book based on that idea, and on Celtic Mythology and Oriental Mythology, and several others as well. Takes some digging but you may find them on Amazon or ebay.

The 2nd ed books were the Historical Reference (HR) series.  They were the same size as the Complete character class series but had a green cover.  HR1 Vikings Campaign Sourcebook was the first.  They were all pretty good books, especially at the time.  I've got three of them and used them all, both as general reference and specific campaigns.  They worked pretty well.  All are available at times on Amazon, e-bay, abe books, and others, but can get a bit on the pricey side.  They have been released as individual pdfs (around $10 each), and I saw them as a bundle of all seven for just under $60.

HR1 - Viking Campaign
HR2 - Charlemagne's Paladins
HR3 - Celts Campaign
HR4 - A Mighty Fortress  (30 Years War)
HR5 - The Glory of Rome
HR6* - Age of Heroes      (classical Greece)
HR7* - The Crusades

* note - HR6 and HR7 don't actually have those numbers on them but were a part of the series.

3.5 does have the Norse pantheon in Deities & Demigods, and there are so many elf and dwarf subraces that you could probably jury-rig something without much trouble if you wanted to.

Norse Mythology DnD

I was in a game on here that was completely Norse based.  I believe he was using both the source book from 2nd edition as well as other sources.  Alas, we paused briefly for the holidays and, sadly, it seems to have come to a grinding halt...and just as we were about to stage a massive assault :(
