The pros of being right do not outweigh the cons of being wrong in this case. Being right means you've accomplished nothing, while being wrong means you've just spent effort tearing into a mother's grief for no reason. Really, the best case scenario is getting to be smug. Please try consider the consequences of having argued against it should it be true.

In any event, the idea of making characters to honor a dedicated gamer is a nice sentiment.

Sure.  And not everyone is as cynical as you.  Some of us still take what people say at face value.

This isn't about a Nigerian prince asking for help to get his fortune out of the country.

If it turns out that the person was lying, or mistaken (assuming they took the post from somewhere else and posted it as their own), what harm has been done?

It's a feel good gesture that does no harm.

In reply to pdboddy (msg # 13):

Precisely. At the very least, you have a new NPC. At most, you have a new NPC and you've done something to commemorate a fallen member of our community. Like Nintaku said, the pros of being right, outweigh the cons of being wrong. Well stated.

In reply to GammaBear (msg # 15):

You may certainly express your opinion.  But in your very first reply, it appeared like you were strawberrying on the thread.  How were we supposed to take that?  We simply replied with our opinion about your opinion.

And now the thread's off track.

Myself, Wyatt shall be a good-guy mage NPC in my tabletop Shadowrun game.

I think Wyatt will have to be a Knight of Avalon in the 7th Sea 2e game I'm running soon.

I don't know what I'll do with my version of Wyatt quite yet, but he will be a Paladin of Pelor for me.

The temptation to have a Wyatt Earp is high. :)

If you have the setting, go for it.

I am going to include Wigheard Parisser, Half-Elf and disgraced Paladin seeking redemption in my game, as a pivotal NPC.

(Wigheard is the Anglo-Saxon origin of Wyatt; and Parisser is derived from Ferris)

Since both my games are set in modern times with nearby universities I now have an NPC in both - Wyatt Ferris, a 17 year old student who hopes to have a career in Baseball!

May I propose that someone from our subset of gamer community (rpol) with social media access reaches out to his mother and asks for permission to use some of the images of him for our portraits.

I would do so myself, but I don't use twitter or facebook.

Just tweeted to #Play4Wyatt but may not get a response. Twitter can create a lot of noise and bear in mind Wyatt's family will be grieving right now and may not be in a position to respond to tweets.

Manticore:
The problem I see is the 'took his own life' part. The death report I found on him was 'hit by a train.'

swordchucks:
I know nothing about the case, but jumping in front of a train or large truck is a method of suicide.

quote:
A witness called 911 to report seeing someone jump in front of the train. The caller said the engineer sounded the horn but could not stop in time.

quote:
"When he was 14, he was playing in the 18-year-old age group," she said. "He suffered a concussion three years ago and had a really hard time coming back from it. He had cognitive behavioral therapy he had to go through as a result of the concussion and started to have anxiety and panic attacks."

Pure speculation but the thought is that the brain injury caused some form of depression or anxiety that prompted him to throw himself in front of a train :(

I'll be on the look out to drop a Wyatt or two here and there...

Ooof, so young.  Suicide is always tragic, but it is especially so in the young.

Wyatt Ferris is now an NPC in my M20 game.

I play alongside both Locke and Warrax, although I'm not usually a GM.  My heart to the family - I've been in their shoes with 3 very close friends.

Re: #Play4Wyatt
I'm running a D&D game in which a lone shrine to a god of springtime and morning sits outside a town that has otherwise turned its back on the gods. I already had in mind that someone had been tending the shrine for a while, and that this lone reminder of the god's benevolence was tolerated, out of a sense of longing for better times.

Wyatt Ferris will be a ranger, and the secret shrine-keeper.

If you have twitter that's probably the best way to report it, with the hashtag.

Must say quite the clever and appropriate way of remembrance. Given how much time I spend gaming it really hits home as a nice way to live on in the collective fabric of fantasy.

Not exactly RPG related, but I needed to name a minor character in my Nanowrimo, so now there's a Wyatt McClain who was a foot soldier in an army that was in my setting a couple hundred years ago.

When I get through working overtime, Wyatt Ferris will populate the Firefly 'Verse and the world of Tekumel (perhaps as the Pe Choi mage W'ai'att Feris'che {which will literally mean "keeper of dreams" in my campaign}).

Honor the fallen, give comfort to the grieving, and bring joy to those living and playing.  How can these things be in any wise wrong?

Nagatobimaru:
He suffered a concussion when he was 14yo, never healing fully from the damage.

Bear in mind that first there was an injury. Most mankind has advanced their understanding of brain injuries or imbalances. For instance depression is diagnosed as an extended period of sadness.

For those struggling to grasp how this works consider a skiing athlete who breaks their leg. You know for the bone injury the person needs outside help. Needs to rest. Needs support in the form of a cast and later a crutch. Eventually, if they do the right things and keep on their medication the leg can heal and they can run, skip and even ski again. The brain is also biological with many more components than a leg. Depression can come from injury or suppression of the hormones and chemistry that give the brain strength.

On going depression can lead to suicide. Rather than a selfish act it can be connected to thoughts of not wanting others to suffer or just wanting the pain to end. Imagine having a broken leg that never got treated and the world demanding you run on it everyday.

When viewed in this you can make a comparison to Wyatt's story to also read: A youth suffered a potentially fatal injury at 14 yet even though it never fully healed kept an active life going on 3 more years.

I'm on this too and Wyatt will become a NPC on Blackmoor as well.
