Limericks

A limerick is a five line poem.  The first, second, and fifth lines rhyme and so do the third and fourth.  The first, third, and fifth have the same verbal rhythm (meter) and length, and so do the second and fourth.

Examples:
The limerick packs laughs anatomical
Into space that is quite economical
But the good ones I've seen
So seldom are clean
And the clean ones so seldom are comical
-- Vyvyan Holland

Would a limerick thread be kinda tough?
It could work if we helped out enough.
We just need to strive through,
And do all we can do,
And maybe this thread won't be rough.
-- Dr. Monkey

The more-or-less complete rules of limericks can be found here:

Bart's form could use some change
The form he must arrange
To be correct
One must expect
To see, avoid, the strange

(Since you seem to be into analyzing the meter...
When writing a limerick, I think you choose a foot to use.  Once decided, you use that foot in the form 3, 3, 2, 2, 3, with equally footed lines rhyming.  So, in the one above, my foot is short-long.  So it goes: ".-.-.-, .-.-.-, .-.-, .-.-, .-.-.-".)

So much about taking the crown
I think if you must write it down
Just to waste your time
And think up a rhyme
Your face must be wearing a frown

quote:
I think you choose a foot to use.  Once decided, you use that foot in the form 3, 3, 2, 2, 3, with equally footed lines rhyming.

(Actually, I believe it's also considered perfectly valid to use short-long short-short-long short-short-long, even though the first section has one less short.  Also for the 2 line, short-long short-short-long, is valid.  Myself, I prefer not to count meter at all and just go for close enough.  After all, it's still wasting time.)

To quote two of my previous limericks, sometimes the limerick is beautiful.  Sometimes it's not. ;)
quote:
The meter of rhyme is not dung.
For trippingly off of the tongue,
A poem sounds its best,
When lines are caressed,
Just like mama's breast when you're young.

What an enjoyable game,
All of us rhyming acclaim,
But occasionally,
Some rhymes just shouldn't be,
This one is certainly lame.

It's not like I sleep.
And I've tried counting sheep.
But now I have not just one job, but two!

Re: Limericks

We each need a knowledge filter
When we hear a fact out of kilter
To tell if it's true,
'Though not what we knew,
*

*I'm not sure what to put in for the last line:
-Sew a tapestry of facts, like a quilter.
-Please try hard not to be bitter.
The first is weak and the second doesn't really rhyme.

Re: Limericks

The timing on this one is different, I went with all anapests in this one, two down, one up, ..- instead of using more iambs, down up, .- like I usually do.  I felt that I should say this because requested sort of seems like the accent could go on either the first or the second syllable, depending on context.

I requested access in a game
as a bard who would sing out their fame
for two days no reply,
The G.M is awry,
I guess nobody now is to blame

You all likely can do this.  Just sit around with rhyming dictionaries and rewriting for a while until you have something that fits.  What's even more troubling than this is the acronym conversation -- so often I'll have a conversational phrase that almost fits, but just doesn't quite make it and I end up rewriting it from scratch.  Sometimes, after a number of rewrites I'll just throw in the towel and put what I have, but rarely I end up with something that I rather like.

Re: Limericks

When I was in 8th grade, my English teacher gave me my first rhyming dictionary.  I basically never used it again for years, then started using it just before losing it in a move.  When I looked online, I found rhymezone.com  So, now I pick some interesting words to sort of rhyme with, then play with meter until I find something that sort of works.

To help me see how each line is going, I type out the lows and highs as I go like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_%28poetry%29 but I use . for low points and - for high points.

My friend, ChaosLord, is a ferret
.--.-..-. or .--....-. (depending on whether your voice goes up on Lord like at the end of a question or goes down like at the end of a statement) so I probably need to change that.

As a sidenote, it is my personal opinion that Obama didn't get any clapping during his inaugural speech because he kept putting his voice up at the end of each line like he wasn't stopping but was just going on.  If he'd put his voice down like something was final, then people would have known that he was "stopping" for a moment and that it was ok to clap.  People respected him too much to interrupt him in the middle of a sentence, so he didn't get any clapping during his speech, in my opinion.  The Archbishop, though, he sure knew how to pitch his voice.

Tayler Mali has a great riff on that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmLE2bliXCI
Obama spoke like he was asking questions instead of like he was telling us things.

Anyway...

ChaosLord is a ferret of chaos
-.-..-..-.
holy cow, nothing rhymes with chaos?  Normally, I'd rewrite the first line to something that rhymes easily, but lets press onward.
k-oss, loss?  now, whatever I grab has to end on a down note, so... "duck sauce"?
Then I try to find something that ends with duck sauce and fits the first line's pattern.
These make try poor forgotten like duck sauce
Just a little now; scrumptious is duck sauce

then whatever for the next
did that make sense?
.-.-
have I gone dense?

now to find something that rhymes with 1 & 2 and fits the foot pattern.
something...

I can't get from SketchUp to Hammer from Valve

We interrupt this breaking limerick to inform you that although this first sentence flowed pretty well, apparently "valve" has no rhymes.

I can't get to Hammer (by Valve) from my SketchUp.
I think it's because; but if I try and... no! yup?
It just won't compile.
It seems it's hostile.
Perhaps it's that I am too close (I'm a young pup).

I built this beautiful double helix spiral staircase in SketchUp that I want to bring into a Hammer map but the SketchUp plugin is saying that there's some sort of error, so the .vmf is "corrupt" and Hammer removes the "corrupted entities".  They're just ordinary blocks (all convex or straight, nothing concave) inside my skybox, but it's just not working for some reason.  Argh!

Not bad.  If I'm being picky, I'd say your meters don't match very well.

For example:

Lives a witch with many aims (7 syllables, rhythm doesn't match)

Better:
Lived a witch with some dubious aims

One could claim that I suck,
But I persevere,
With apologies to ear,
I make people say 'What the fudge.'

OOC: Only I didn't say "Fudge." I said THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words, the "F-dash-dash-dash" word!

Re: Limericks

The easiest way to build a limerick is using the following formula (it's one of the most common, too.)

There once was a (two syllables) named (one syllable)
Who (description, match the above syllables - usually eight syllables, though you can change it by one)
He/She (did something, five total syllables)
(something else, five syllables again)
(Result, eight syllables)

And follow the rhyme scheme of:
A
A
B
B
A

Re: Limericks

There once was a limerick named Lim,
who tired of being so prim,
so he double entendre'd, (pronounce to rhyme with the next line)
somethin' 'bout an old maid,
and found himself singing a hymn?

So that last one was really quite poor,
And in writing I felt -- well -- voyeur.
No more like the last,
Entendre lambast,
In this one I feel the grandeur.

Happy anniversary, for FourLegged, to you,
We hope that you will be here, for many more days it's true,
Happy, happy birthday,
From all of us who play,
And now that we have sung here, we'll dance a pas de deux.

I'll upload a recording of me singing it soon as I get a moment, I have to go cook dinner for my mom. :)

This is what I hunger for
A limerick brought fresh to my door
Unless you have some English scars
(In which case read me your memoirs)
A story short I do abhore

I'll stop in now to say hello
Through here like the wind I'll blow
I'll just be here for a few days
And give you all my words of praise
A lovely, lovely ASWOT show

Those really aren't good limericks, right?
The last line doesn't even have a bite.
The next two lines are just too long,
It's really rather all quite wrong.
I guess I sort of have stage fright?

After seeing http://i100.independent.co.uk/...y-clever--WJRpxm263e
I made this:

For x squared, a minus x, twelve
For solve it, some math we will delve.
For we'll factor the roots
For its attributes.
Four; minus three; file on the shelve.

That was more difficult than I'd anticipated.  Also, it's only a visual rhyme.
