Zombie Apocalypse Showdown

RULES OF ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE

CAN YOU SURVIVE THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE? OR WILL YOU BE A MINDLESS ZOMBIE INTENT ON EATING THE BRAINS OF HUMANS?

Here's how to play:

STEP 1: A "Round" goes until someone has rolled a "00" or a "01."  All rolls are made on a d100.  At the beginning of a Round, the roll is set at 50.

STEP 2: Start the game or round as human.  (Don't worry, that won't last long.)  Roll d100.

STEP 3:
If you roll a 100 or a 01, the round ends.  (See below.)

If you roll less than the person above you, then you are human.  (You either stay human and escape the zombies, or, if a zombie, you have been killed or received a cure and now post as a human.)

If you roll higher than the person above you, then you are a zombie.  (Either you remain a zombie or you have become infected and become a zombie.)

If you tie the person above you, then it's your choice.

STEP 4:
In your post, copy and paste your roll and then ADD A FUN NARRATIVE WITH THE RESULT BEING THE RESULT FROM YOUR ROLL (zombie or human).

(This can create a running narrative or community storytelling with the group of humans helping each other out, and zombies collaborating with grunts or whatever, or it can be an independent post.)

STEP 5(optional):
Include how many rolls you have made and been able to remain human or zombie.  The person with the highest amount of rolls without changing (minimum of 3) is Governor of the humans or King of the zombies.  YOU MUST ANNOUNCE THAT YOU HAVE BECOME GOVERNOR OR KING since this is an optional rule, and you must from then on post your streak number (the number of rolls that you have remained human or zombie).

Overthrow the rule of the person before you by having a longer streak of being a zombie or human.

RULES CLARIFICATIONS:
ROLLING A 100 OR A 01:
This ends the round.  The last roll is reset to 50.

A natural 100 (00) means that the zombies have conquered the world.  Everyone becomes a zombie and the game resets with everyone starting as a zombie.  (If anyone is king of the zombies at this point, he gets his name in the Hall of Fame.  A governor loses his spot as governor.)

A natural 01 means that the humans have ended the zombie plague.  The game resets with everyone starting as human. (If anyone is Governor of the humans at this point, he gets his name in the Hall of Fame.  If anyone is king of the zombies, he loses his spot and starts as human.)

SIMULTANEOUS POSTING
Use the dice roller log to determine what your roll means, even if the post order in this thread does not match the roll order in the dice log.

Results history:
Round 1: Humans win, no Gov
Round 2: Zombies win, no King
Round 3: Zombies win, Athena was Queen
Round 4: Humans win, no Gov
Round 5: Humans win, no Gov
Round 6: ongoing...

You know, the current game-end rule favors NOT posting once you've gotten King/Gov.  This is a flaw for any ASWOT game.  An ASWOT game should always favor MORE posting.

Maybe the rule should be that you track how many times you've been zombie and/or human in total.  That way it always benefits you to keep rolling.

In reply to Yoss (msg # 21):

That was my point in the testing thread.  Except that it is a little counterbalanced by someone taking over your throne and your desire to keep rolling to avoid it.  You can also roll to have a bigger streak.  The problem is that whether you post may be conditioned on whatever the last person's roll will be.  Which is not a problem if the game is active, but might be if it dies down a little.

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown

I suppose if someone doesn't want to roll, they could just say they are a zombie wandering around aimlessly or a human hiding out in a safehouse, but that kind of takes the fun out of it.

I noticed people are not really adding fun narratives.  That's one thing I was hoping would be more utilized.

In reply to Yoss (msg # 62):

That's a really good point.  I don't expect anyone (including myself) to go back up through the threads. But maybe when a new game starts, we have a big BIG BOLD MESSAGE that a new game has started; also, in the subject line, we could put what game number it is.  (Like right now, maybe it's game 3 or 4.)  Then you just see if it is on the same game as the last time you posted.

For now, let's do that.  We'll put in big bold letters when a new round starts, and then we'll just post in the Subject line 'ROUND 1' and then go from there.

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown Round 3

Yoss is currently King of the Humans (4 rolls).
Athena is currently Queen of the Zombies (5 rolls).

By the way, when FL hit 4 rolls as zombie, he caught up to Athena (who had 4 at the time).  Could he have declared himself Zombie King, or must he have bypassed?

EDIT:
Current rules say "longer", but I'd vote that a tie should be good enough.

I was tempted.  But a 10% failure rate on a very strong 6-in-a-row seems too risky for me.  Getting to 7-in-a-row doesn't seem worth the risk, especially since no one's even close to catching up yet.  Seems better to just wait for the "01" or "100" to come along.  Meanwhile, I'm basically sidelined, as I said back in posts 21 and 22.

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown Round 6

I was thinking of another optional rule, but I don't want to make this complicated.  (LIKE THE KING/GOVERNOR RULE ITSELF, THIS IS COMPLETELY OPTIONAL)

Something like this:

If you are the King or Governor, you roll twice.  (You must become King or Governor first, and then roll twice starting on your next roll.)  The first roll determines whether you remain a zombie/human.  The next roll determines how many followers you attract.  (This incentivizes the King/Governor to keep rolling.)

A 01 or 100 roll still means the humans or zombies win, but that can be trumped if the reigning King or Governor has more followers.  (The 01 or 100 would essentially add 100 followers to the humans or zombies.)

Example:

Yoss is Governor, and since becoming governor has made three "follower" rolls, attracting a total of 153 followers.

Heath is King of the Zombies, and has attracted a total of 40 followers.

A 100 is rolled.  This means the Zombies have 140 followers (100 + 40).  Normally, the zombies would win, but Yoss has 153 followers and they would take down the zombies despite the 100 roll.

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown Round 6

OOoooh.  So a way to combat the 50/50 odds of having your "investment" fail?  (Right now, the strategy is to get King/Gov, then just pray that the 01/00 coin flip is in your favor.)

Very interesting.  So, if there's no zombie king, there are no zombie followers and thus they auto-lose if there's a human governor (and vice versa)?  Similarly, even if both sides have a leader, whichever side has more followers will auto-win when the game ends?

I like the ability to alter your odds as an incentive to keep rolling.  However, auto-win seems like it could be demoralizing if one side gets too many followers.  Perhaps the followers could somehow boost chances without making it auto-win, thus leaving the minority team with a hope of winning (other than just catching up on followers).

It's yet more complicated, but perhaps after the final roll comes (01 or 100), a GM (or whoever) makes a final roll to see who wins.  The team who won the flip (01 for humans, 100 for zombies) gets to double their followers, then add up the total followers between both sides.  Say Z is the number of zombies and H is the number of humans, with N equal to the sum of H and Z.  Roll 1dN.  If the roll is greater than H then the humans lose.

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown Round 6

So my idea is simply that the side with the most followers wins when a 100 or 01 is rolled.  The followers are gained by the rolls (as in my last post), but 100 followers is added to the zombie or human side depending on if the last roll was a 01 or 100.

If there is no current leader, then there are no additional followers to add to the 100, and then the last roll automatically makes that team (zombie or human) the winner.  So you can lose all your followers too if you stop becoming king/governor.  The question is whether you can transfer your followers to a king/governor who takes the position away from you.  I would say yes.

This rule (like the king/governor rule itself) is purely optional with the individual (in this case, the king/governor), so it doesn't have to complicate the rules for anyone who doesn't want to use it.  If you do use it, just post your total followers in each post.

Yoss, another potential incentive is to say someone loses their governor/kingship if they don't roll within 3-5 days, and they are automatically switched to the other team (if they are caught).  They would lose all followers.  (Exemptions would be if they can't roll--like me right now.)

OK, I'll rephrase, make that rule and it ruins the game by making the determination of winner extremely random, rather than by either strategy (which most ASWOT games have little of anyway so no big deal) or even for posting frequently (as most ASWOT games reward).

Perhaps it would be best to go back to my old suggestion of keeping track of how many times you've rolled each thing and that's what determines Governor.  Then you always encourage more rolls, more participation, and you're never enticed to delay for a better pre-roll.

I don't quite understand.  It encourages posting for those who are governor/king so they can get more followers and avoid the randomness of winning or losing on a 01 or 100 roll.

I don't understand your proposed rule.

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown

Here are the rules again (copied from Post #1):

STEP 5(optional):

Now, in the midst of the LOVELY CHAOS, zombie-froggychum made an announcement:

"For I am the oldest undead present, I declare myself....

the eruption of nonliving applause was enough to terrify even those with an iron will, and the following rave was enough to coerce even the scarediest cats to join the new wave of ex-humanity!

Poor little froggychum was stuck in this disgustingly alive human body. He just wanted to return to his throne as the Lord of Death-Parties... Perhaps that world would never return to his grasp. He may be stuck like this... forever.

Alas, it was futile to hope. For now he had to keep his mind busy, and what better way to do that then mindless killing of innocent doctors. Froggychum used to believe in vaccinations, but this 'Zombie Cure' had caused him nothing but pain. He was pretty strong as a zombie, but he hadn't been weak before he had been turned either. You see, Froggychum had the power of {REDACTED}!

Soon, he would escape the compound, and when he did, hopefully there would be some walking corpses waiting to spread their filthy disease to him. If they did, he would reward them heavily in electronic music, before he would depart back to The Americas.

It had taken him two and a half months, but Froggychum had locked himself in his Saharan compound, subsisting solely off of the rations that existed there.

He had spent that time using the power of {REDACTED} to both reverse engineer the vaccine into an un-vaccine (read: Bioweapon) as well as somehow managing to barely slip by with preventing the outside world from learning of his meddling.

And at last, the time had come... He had finished his Unvaccine! Now, he could return to his rightful position of Zombie Dance-King! It wouldn't take long for his new superhuman body to make it's way back to New York, and once he was there it would take even less time to hunt down and assassinate any potential usurpers who had stolen his eldritch title!

For the first time in months, he opened the door to the outside world, and took a step out...

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown

16:47, Today: RabbitBall rolled 28 using 1d100.  Zombie Check Human (6, still Governor)

"Not if you can't catch me!!" RabbitBall closes the doors to the dandelion shop and boards it up to prevent the horde of zombies outside from entering. The guards are told to keep zombies out but if they find a human out there, to let the Rabbit Response Team know so they can sneak the human in through the hidden tunnels. Meanwhile, RabbitBall forms a group of humans to work on a vaccine.

09:12, Today: The Fool on the Hill rolled 47 using 1d100.  Zombie Apocalypse Roll. (Zombie 2)

The most Foolish zombie on the Hill runs (at a zombie speed) to the Dandelion shop boarded up window and start pounding them.
"Get out and face me as a Man! Hem... I was meaning that you should behave like a man.... while you are still a man... of course..." then the Foolish zombie pauses "...and I should behave like a zombie.... of course... as long as I am a zombie... of course..." he pauses again "...I mean: let's all behave as we should... as long as we are what we are... of course... and we are now what we are not... and... hum..." these philosophic thoughts seem to confuse the Fool.

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown

RabbitBall gets reports from the vaccine department that they have made progress, but no one inside the compound wants to test it. So, being the good governor he is, he takes the vaccine and wanders out into the field ahead of him, giving the guards a complicated tongue twister as a password to let him (or other humans) back in.

He walks up to the first zombie he finds and lets the bite happen. He starts chanting, ""I'm Jorge, the Unhangabe Hobgoblin, I'm Jorge the Unhangable Hobgoblin, I'mmm Horrrhay the unnnnnnnnhhhh..." When he tries to wander back, the guards try to get him to recite the tongue twister but all he can muster is grunts and is denied, have clearly been turned into a zombie.

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown

The attempted zombie vaccine turns out to be a cure, but on an extremely long delay. As he recovers, he realizes he's being turned away from the human camp. Well, that's why we test. So he starts shouting to the guards, "I'm Jorge the Unhangable Hobgoblin! I'm Jorge the Unhangable Hobgoblin! I'm Jorge the Unhangable Hobgoblin!!"

The guards then administer the test he prepared beforehand specifically for him. They hand him a pair of ropes which he wraps around his waist. One guard stands at each side and pulls on the ropes while he chants about being the Unhangable Hobgoblin. Instead of tightening around RabbitBall's waist, they fly off him, one in each guard's hands. This was the sign that he was free of zombie toxin, and they let him in. Because of the delay, they keep him in quarantine just in case.

13:05, Today: RabbitBall rolled 42 using 1d100 ((42)). Human (1)

OOC: On a tie, you decide the result. And I think Froggy is still on his 3-streak as a zombie, so that makes him king until someone beats the streak.

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown

A stray needle in the ground near the dandelion shop stabs into RabbitBall's foot. Due to his zombieness, he doesn't notice until the fluid goes into his leg and up throughout his body. When the first drops hit his brain, RabbitBall realizes that he's standing outside the dandelion shop and it took a rogue injection to cure him.

Seeing the Fool babbling about near the entrance, RabbitBall realizes that he needs to draw this interloper away before trying to enter. He waves at the fool and shouts keeping just out of range of the Fool and other zombies. Once they're away, he identifies himself as Jorge the Unhangable Hobgoblin and passes the rope test to once again enter the shop.

Oh! Surprise! He managed it!!!
That was because the weak vaccine effect came and went and now came again!
The Fool, human again, is in front of the dandelion shop, with a crowd of zombies behind! he runs to the shop, repeating over and over the password, expecting the human barricaded inside the shop to give him salvation.

Re: Zombie Apocalypse Showdown

After a brief bout of brain fog and an appetite for human flesh, RabbitBall shakes out of it and returns to the dandelion shop where he sees a Fool trying to get in. He flags down the guards, steps in, and takes the two ropes in front of the potential interloper. He shows the Fool that the two ropes are tied together at their center by a black thread. Folding each rope at that point, he wraps them around his waist and hands one rope (both ends) to each of the guards. To an outsider not paying attention, it would look each guard was given one end of two different ropes and the part where they are tied together is hidden behind his back under his jacket.

As they pull, RabbitBall repeats the "I'm Jorge the Unhangable Hobgoblin" line until the string breaks and each guard just has one rope. They then hand another pair of ropes done similarly to the Fool.

RabbitBall makes a long explanation and demonstration to the Fool, but the unbalanced dose of the vaccine fails again to keep him as a human... he turns again into a Zombie-Fool and cuts the lesson short by attempting to bite him!

There's a reason the test is hard; it's to keep flighty people out. In response to the Fool's attempt to bite him, RabbitBall ducks underneath, picks up the Fool safely, and drops him outside the dandelion shop, pointing him toward a newly turned zombie that looks a bit like a human, hoping it will distract him away from the entrance.

The uncertain effect of the scarce dose of vaccine once again turns the Zombie-Fool into the Fool. He realises that he's precipitating down from the dandelion shop into the hard floor, surrounded by freshly-transformed zombies. While he falls backwards, he realises that RabbitBall is pointing at one of the freshly transformed zombies, as if challenging the zombie to eat the Fool.
The Fool instead, while he's falling, points at RabbitBall and swears... until the hard floor suddenly stops his fall and his swearing.
