I'll just keep busy wasting time by hitting the refresh button on ASWoT every 5 seconds until someone posts.

This is an interesting way to utilize this time wasting resource.

Re: Timewaster's Lounge XLVII

I've been super inactive here and on the whole forums for a couple weeks now (maybe? time is meaningless right now)

I can't say it's going to get better, I guess I'm just a bit burned out (?)... I don't have any huge commitments right now (my precious game seems to have faltered off a while ago... I could put the effort into having a chance at reviving it, but I'm not feeling up to it)

Honestly, all the games I'm in seem to be slowing down heavily... I wonder if it's related to the state of the world... I hadn't really though that maybe people are sick right now... I assumed it was more mundane; maybe overstressed or too busy? But that thought just struck me... I really hope not. I don't know anyone on this site personally, but they all seem to be decent, interesting, and committed people.

Regardless, this wasn't really meant to be a downer post, just a notification that I exist still, but am not here much.

I really don't want to do what I did a few years ago... and just disappear. I don't even remember why I did that last time, but I must've lost interest... It's happening again.

That last part was kind of a downer, because it is something that I've been upset about for a while. I kind of feel like I should be more committed, but to what? Being around? Meh.

Worthy of an award, eh?

I will just keep hitting refresh until someone gives me that award...

Re: Timewaster's Lounge XLVII

I've been super busy with other stuff. Thought about logging in to make a few posts, but didn't have the time.

The best thing to do would be for the GMs to bump this game, since it's clearly slowing down pretty bad. Though, it would probably be pretty silly for me to call it 'dead', considering it's almost as old as I am.

Hmmm...I thought anyone could bump, since it's part of the bumper car arena thread. I don't think it has to be GMs

For fun, check out the cast of characters. We have had a lot of players in this game over the last 18 years or so! And that doesn't even include the ones who were removed at some point.

Re: Timewaster's Lounge XLVII

It's kind of crazy, TBH!

Also, I don't know 100% of rpol.net's features, so do you mind if I ask if you were the original GM for the game? Or were you, like, elected or something?

I mean, ignoring the fact that there are currently nearly a dozen other GMs (including that lovely koala... he'll be the last of those monstrosities that I slay) are you the original creator of this game? If not, do you remember or know who made it?

Also, if you have any miscellaneous meta-lore, I'd like to hear it, too :)

Re: Timewaster's Lounge XLVII

No, Heath was not the original GM/creator. He was elevated at some point, same as I was. I think GermAnt was (a) GM when I started, and so were Zeldi and the koala in the corner.

My original RTJ was sent to Cody Coriva, despyzer, FourLegged, Germ Ant, Yoss & Zeldi, but I don't think any of them was the original creator either.

Re: Timewaster's Lounge XLVII

despyzer was the creator of this game. He left RPoL long, long ago (not officially, but haven't seen him around in probably a decade or more). I think Cody, Germ Ant and FL came before me as GM. Yoss came well after. I don't remember about Zeldi. I probably became a GM around 2005 or so.

THe game has been around since probably 2002, almost since the outset of RPoL. It goes through periods of being very active and (like now) slow times. It's nice to hang around even during the slow times and try to revive it. It's like a phoenix that keeps being reborn every year or so.

Re: Timewaster's Lounge XLVII

What they say is true,  despyzer, (known at the beginning as Despyzer,) was the creator of ASWoT. When I joined in early 2013, there was, (I think,) two active GMs.

Sadly, both Despyzer and Leah, both have been gone for a very long time.

Sometime after despyzer disappeared, ASWoT came to the attention of the RPoL powers that be and almost got closed down.  Fortunately we survived and I was designated as the owner.  I did not want that role and passed it along to somebody who wanted it. (I cannot recall who that was.  (Yoss, maybe?)

By the way, thank you for saving me for last.  I wish you great success.

Re: Timewaster's Lounge XLVII

FL, I think you mean 2003, not 2013. :)

I remember that near shutdown very well. I think it was in 2006. We ended up having to trim the posts, which had the most in all of RPoL, as I recall--over 100k in posts. I think it had to do with a game we had here that rewarded posting in other forums, and they thought that was against the ToU, and then someone (not a GM here) did something that peeved the moderators. That's when we created the archives.

Yoss' passion was key in keeping ASWoT alive back in '06 or '07. But I also recall that it was FL who had to deal with the moderators and help post the rules to keep us alive. That was above and beyond the call of duty.

I found your post from Sept. 6, 2006, quoting moderator ElSpike, and think it may be worth reposting here:
FL:

It looks as though the powers that be have noticed us again and they are not pleased.

The Rules.
ElSpike:
Players of this game are constantly flouting the rules of RPoL and interrupting other users of this site. Therefore the following rules must be adhered to by you and your players.

#1. Any player advertising this game outside of the normal advertising process in Wanted - Players, will result in the game being closed for 1 week. Any further adverts will result in the doubling (think exponentially) of the previous penalty. Closure of the game will entail all posting and viewing  privileges being revoked.

Rule #1: When venturing into the 'Players - Wanted' thread, please follow the rules, also when bumping the thread, try to add something creative and useful, not just "BUMP!", I can see how that would get to be very annoying very quickly. (I'm partially responsible for this, as this was the first time I actually took a look at what was going on there.)  Perhaps, when bumping the thread, we could post something interesting/informative/creative that might actually inspire people to join ASWoT.
ElSpike:
#2. Any player found distrupting another game to score "points" or any other reason will result in the game being closed for 1 week. Any further disruptions will result in the doubling (think exponentially) of the previous penalty. Disruptions include asking stupid questions in other forums, derailing Community Chat threads or general nuisance posting.

Rule #2: Stop it.  If there is anybody caught disrupting another game on the behalf of ASWoT, there will be serious consequences.  This has been an issue in the past and it almost got us shut down.  I do not want to lose ASWoT because of something beyond my control.
ElSpike:
#3. Threads that are no longer of use are to be removed from the site. There are  threads from 2003 that are just rhyming games and hold no use. Additionally, "reviving" threads just for the purpose of avoiding this rule will not be tolerated.

Rule #3:  Enjoy the archived threads while we still have them, as of the 9th of the month of September, I will be removing them.  (I'm looking into a way of preserving the archived threads in some other way, (perhaps another website somewhere, I'm not certain.)
quote:
The above rules apply not just in their letter but their spirit. Attempts to "rules lawyer" around them will also result in penalties.

Should you have any issue with these rules, please contact us.

This private message was sent to despyzer.  As a GM, I feel it to be my duty to share it with you all because I believe you should know about elSpike's concerns.  If you have issues with any of this, please respond within this PM thread and I will present our responses and defenses to the PTB myself.

Kind regards
elSpike
on behalf of the Moderation team.

Re: Timewaster's Lounge XLVII

Sorry about the umm... typo? Call it a Freudian slip.  It was an accident that I claimed to have been here for 7 years instead of my mother 17.

I recall the moment of sinking dread when I saw that message from ElSpike. It's not good to be on a moderator's radar.

Not long after I posted the rules, I reached out to ElSpike to apologize and tell him that we will abide by his rules.  Surprisingly not jerklike, he accepted and we were put on probation. Not long after, I was designated Owner.

To our credit, (correct me if I am wrong, the memory of a koala is shorter than their lifespan,) I don't believe that we were ever closed for bad behavior.

I don't believe so, but we had a time shortly after that where RPoL wouldn't work, but it ended up being a technical glitch, as I recall, and not a moderator caused event.

WE will need to create a new Lounge, as this is almost at 1000

Re: Timewaster's Lounge XLVII

Man! That's some awesome (real-life) lore! Have any of you ever considered starting a History of ASWoT (sticky) thread?

Also, yeah, a new lounge is definitely needed. I've been getting this notification for weeks, now. It might be kind of exciting to start over, or maybe a bit somber? Maybe neither.

I don't know the rules for posting links on this website, so I will refrain.

Instead, if anyone of you who hasn't seen it (somehow) and wants to learn where I got the idea for my Koala Genocide, just GoogleTM 'koalas are terrible animals copypasta'. It's a reddit post from Feb 2017.

Content warning #1: Curse words & Icky description of koala biology.

Content warning #2: You won't ever think of koalas the same way again.

It's super funny and legitimately educational. It's also kind of upsetting, though.
