Act 5.4.2 - A Refuge in Akari City

Location: A Refuge in Akari City

In many other places, on many other planets, this would be an 'alien refuge', specifically a place for non-humans to avoid persecution.  Here, however, it's simply a refuge.  This sector, and particularly this planet, value their neutrality very highly.  As a result there's no preference given here of one species over another.  Humans and non-humans are equally welcome.

Having said that the simple fact is that with the Empire raging the majority of the people here have fled from Empire-controlled space, are non-human and have a distinct issue with Humanity.  This is not necessarily a safe place.

The refuge is in the Western District, an industrial complex that forms a fair portion of Akari City.  Towering buildings cast almost-perpetual shade and the streets have a rough look compared to much of the rest of the city - though not, of course, compares to the Claws.  It's doubtful that any of the tour airspeeders go to this part of the city.  Small hubs of entertainment trades form the 'pressure valve' for the city's hardest workers and most of the district is dedicated to seemingly endless factories and warehouses.

Stuck between an electronics manufacturer and a cosmetics factory, the refuge is situated in a formally abandoned warehouse, fixed up and renovated for the countless bunk beds and few kitchens that support this desperate population.  Even from the outside it looks like a ramshackle hotel of the cheapest kind, primarily tacked together with donations and volunteer work.

Such is actually the case.  Even a brief look on the net indicates the place as sponsored by a few smaller corporations but exists primarily as a charity that relies on fundraisers and generosity.  The building is unguarded but a security camera is visible above the front door.

Flash took the baton and slipped it under his coat next to his own baton.  He'd left his hold-out blaster with Arin but he hoped he wouldn't need it.  He walked forward and knocked on the door.

"What exactly do you want me to say?  I still only have a basic idea of why we're here."

Mika shrugs.  "I don't know if you noticed, but this is an alien zone and since the Bothan thinks I'm some sort of Imperial, having a non-human friend at my side.  Show I'm not an alien-hater.  Smooth things over and try to keep things low-key like I promised Vyn.  And if it goes to hell, you're the best one to have at my side."  She gives Flash a wry grin.

"No, he wants you to apologise for drawing a weapon and threatening people with it." Flash corrected.  "Don't play the innocent victim with me.  You didn't deserve to be robbed but don't pretend you're fautless in how you handled crowd control."

Flash was in no mood to be diplomatic.  Sheila was getting shirty with him and now Mika was playing the victim.  He was getting tired of it.  He wanted a drink.

The irony didn't escape him that the person he was working the most smoothly with tonight was Arin.  Perhaps there was hope for the man after all.

Re: Act 5.4.2 - A Refuge in Akari City

"Yes, all right, all right!" comes a voice from behind the door.  "You'd think there was a war goin' on.  Bombs droppin'?  No?  You can bleedin' well wait while I get th'door open, then."

There's a series of grunts and the dull 'thunk' of a stuck metal door unsticking.  An old lady, a Bothan with greying fur, yanks the door open and stares up at the pair, puffing.  She looks like she's run to the door from a fair way away.  Peering up at the pair of them she rubs one of her hands which, it seems, has been bruised at some point.

"You ain't refugees," she states bluntly.  "Not scruffy enough.  What d'you want?"

Mika sighs, but doesn't dispute Flash's point.  After all, what was the point?

As the elderly Bothan woman comes out, obviously annoyed, Mika puts the best face forward she can manager.  "Greetings, my name is Kimy Stell.  This is my friend, Forim.  I was given this address by a friend, looking for a Bothan who was at our hotel earlier this evening.  I'm afraid I've misplaced something and it was suggested to me by a mutual acquaintance that this woman might be able to help me out."

Old she might be but the elderly Bothan is still clearly plenty sharp.  She looks Mika up and down a couple of times and then says, "You reckon someone's nicked something off you, eh?  No need t'fancy it up, people nick things sometimes.  Who're you looking for, exactly, little dear?"  The way she says 'little dear' doesn't sound particularly like an endearment.  It sounds more like sheer habit.  She'd probably call a rancor 'little dear'.

Unless Flash thinks otherwise, Mika's thought will be to start on this floor and work up.  If no luck, then work down.  While it's probably futile, she's hoping to make a small enough stir to not give the young Bothan (Fiarr) any more notice of their arrival then is absolutely necessary.

Re: Act 5.4.2 - A Refuge in Akari City

There are, indeed, a few Duros around.  Many species are represented here and Duros aren't exactly the least common non-humans in the galaxy.

The rooms around are small and cramped, poorly furnished but clean enough.  A gloomy atmosphere of depression clings to the place.  It doesn't look like a bad place but there are, the pair can estimate, probably a thousand or so desperate, shell-shocked people clinging together in the repurposed building.  Most of the people here are either very young or quite old, with a few adults and middle-agers scattered between.  It's a stark reminder of the ravages of war, of the depredations of the Empire and everything the Talons stand against.

Flash follows Mika, his eyes darting left and right.  He was having a mild sense of forboding as they descended.  There was no reason to suggest this would get violent or that the Bothan even knew they were coming.  Still, this was her own turf and the locals were likely to support their ally in a confrontation.  It wouldn't take much for the hunters to become the hunted.

He just hoped Mika knew what she was doing.

Re: Act 5.4.2 - A Refuge in Akari City

The trip down is slow because the turbolift is broken.  When they reach it there's a very worn-down repair droid working on it; the thing is so old and so patched up that the refuge people almost need to buy another repair droid just to repair the first repair droid.  It beeps at them in a very old droid language, a precursor to the Binary language, and points at a sign that directs them to - of all things - stairs.

It's a long way down to the lowest inhabited sub-basement but they know when they reach it because the stairs are blocked by a very locked door with a sign on it saying 'Authorised Personnel Only'.  Underneath it someone has written in Basic, 'New arrivals, this is your stop.'

As they step out into the main area of the refuge floor they can see a distinct difference.  The new arrivals are more paranoid and desperate than their more experienced fellows on higher floors.  There's more muffled crying from rooms as people come to terms with having lost everything and death, while no longer an immediate concern, is still not out of sight.  Most of the doors don't lock here so people guard their meagre possessions as best they can.

Re: Act 5.4.2 - A Refuge in Akari City

Flash looked around and didn't like what he saw.  Many of these people were desperate, and desperate people could do anything.  What's more the sheer desperation here made him angry, really angry.  It reminded why he was determined to wipe out every last member of the Imperial military.  Scum like that deserved to die.

It also made him review his opinion of the Bothan.  If she lived here or volunteered here he could actually understand why she'd stolen Mika's credstick.  If their roles were reversed he'd have done the same. . .or worse.  He idly fingered the piece of flimsi in his pocket and remembered what Heigren had said to him.  He wondered if the Zeltron was right.

He looked at Mika.  "How do you want to handle this K?  Looks like their may only be one way in or out.  Want to scope the perimeter or just find our girl?"

Flash looked around, seeing if he could spot the Bothan, or the Duros.

Re: Act 5.4.2 - A Refuge in Akari City

There is little way of not being noticed here.  Most of the people take careful note of the newcomers and simply pretend (rather poorly) to ignore them.  Others actually back into their rooms and close their doors.  Not a single human can be seen anywhere; most of the residents here are of the more common non-human species such as Twi'leks, Duros, Bothans and so on.

A couple of times Mika thinks she spots their quarry but it turns out they're not the Bothans they're looking for.

Then she hears a familiar voice.

"...stupid of me, I wasn't ready to go out.  I just made a fool of myself."  It's that Duros who had a meltdown at Mika's threatening stance.  "Stupid frackin' flashbacks," he adds with a frustrated growl.

The voice is coming from a small common area near the middle of the floor, an open space where people probably congregate to catch up with one another.  If this building used to be an office block then it's probably a lunch area or something similar.  It smells of mould slightly.

"Do you need to go back to your room?" comes a deep, warm, manly voice.

"No!  No," the Duros says in a slight panic, "enclosed spaces, y'know.  Just, um, just coming underground was hard enough."

"Okay," the man replies, "take your time."

"Bitch was probably an Imperial," comes a sour, waspish voice, a woman with a slight growl to her tone.  "Think they can run whole sectors..."

Re: Act 5.4.2 - A Refuge in Akari City

There is a short, quiet conversation that Mika can't hear. The woman - presumably the Cathar - doesn't sound happy. If anything she sounds ready to punch a hole in the fabric of space with her anger. A few words from the very deep-voiced male have her moderately calmed, though. After a little Flash reappears around the corner, followed not by the Duros but by the unknown species.

Mika has never seen a... whatever-he-is before, either. He's tall, tall enough that he has to stoop to avoid hitting his head against the ceiling. Two and a half metres tall? Three? It's hard to say. Way bigger than Flash, let alone Mika. He is broadly muscled and very hirsute - not furry like a Wookiee but hairy, with a neatly-trimmed beard and hair bound into braids that fall well past his shoulders. His eyes are a deep brown, edge-to-edge colour, the whites invisible - and while his face looks relatively human he has a bifurcated lip and four horns curling up from his brow. The are black, they look sharp. But when he smiles it's a comforting smile, warm and friendly, that makes him seem more cuddly than able to gore four holes in your torso with minimal effort. He is, very clearly, unarmed.

"Well," he says after a pause, "not an Imperial. But here you are. I felt it... safer for all concerned if I come to talk to you rather than Kyvarr. She is... Not very diplomatic. My name is Oruvenn, I work as a counsellor here. And you are..?"

Kyvarr growled in her throat as Ovruvenn walked over to see the Imperial.  From what Fiarr had said, the human was dangerous and prone to violence.  She spoke quietly to the Duros.

She watched the human closely.  Any trouble and she'd deal with this trouble maker.  Her alcohol-induced headache was now strong enough to make her really cranky.  Perhaps the drinking contest with a wookie hadn't been such a good idea.  Still, the booze had been free and the Zeltron host had sure wanted people to enjoy themselves.  Until the trouble with the human, she'd certainly being doing that!

Oruvenn's smile widens, though it's perhaps a little strained.  "A Cathar.  Her story is hers to tell if she wishes to.  Just tread softly around her.  She is... tempestuous.  May I ask what you'd like to speak to Laide about?  Normally I wouldn't get involved but he's quite, er, fragile at the moment.  Had Kyvarr not been there he'd likely have run by now."  He doesn't comment on the confrontation between the Duros - presumably this 'Laide' - and Kimy... but he does watch her closely for any signs of aggression or threat.  He makes no pretence of doing anything else; he is sizing her up as a potential threat and he has no problems with her knowing it.

So far, however, he clearly hasn't noticed anything worrying about her.  So far so good.

The tall non-human stares at Mika for a few long moments and then nods as if convinced of the genuineness of her apology.  Perhaps his species is telepathic, or maybe he's simply very good at reading people.  Possibly he's simply taking a chance.  "All right.  You've no need to apologise to me, however - and believe it or not, but of the dozen or so refuges about this part of the city we're not doing too badly."  He sighs, as if it's so close to a lie that he's uncomfortable, so he adds, "Comparatively speaking, anyway."  With a gesture of one large hand he waves the pair to follow as he ambles back over to the nervous Duros and his Cathar protector.

"Laide," he says as they near, "this woman's name is Kimy.  She has something to say."  Before anyone can speak, though, he raises a finger in warning to Kyvarr, a strong but lithe looking Cathar sitting near Laide.  Although well in control of her own temper she looks really angry.  If Cathar had tails hers would be fluffed up.

Then he looks down at Kimy again.  "I apologise for losing my temper.  Tomorrow, Kimy.  Right now I need to tend to my duties."  He clearly means tending to Laide but is polite enough not to say it.  "If you need to talk about something related to the shelter than the Bothan who I assume let you in, Shana, will be able to help you."  He turns away and starts leading the even more scared Laide out.  "Unnervingly enough, she manages all of the finances here."

When she finds out why Mika wants to talk, though, the Bothan is her best friend.  When the door opens and Mika steps out Shana is nodding her head in thanks and shaking the humans hand.  She personally sees them off from the door.

And then, a short taxi-ride later, Flash and Mika arrive back at the hotel.
