Re: Act 7.1: Corellian Sector

A message flashes up on the Nebula Drifter's comms, tightbeamed to the ship and heavily scrambled using Black Talon encryption codes.  The origin point would take some work to trace but it couldn't be further than the same star system.  The fact that the message is tightbeamed implies that whoever's contacting the ship knows precisely where they are.

Re: Act 7.1: Corellian Sector

OOC:  First up, apologies for my silence: my ISP decided to upgrade all their infrastructure in my local area and the result was that I had no phone, TV or internet access for three days - except for on my mobile phone, which does NOT get along well with RPOL... *sigh*. On the plus side they've credited my account so that I haven't had to pay for those days where I had no service, AND they've upgraded me to 100mbs for free, so it could be worse.. :)

Secondly:  Mika, I think you've mixed up which ship you're on - you're on the Lunar Flare - the signal went to Nebula Drifter.  :)

Devon blinked in mild surprise when the comma panel chimed, indicating an incoming transmission.  Putting the Flares call on 'hold', he quickly pulled up the transmission details and studied them with a perplexed expression.
"What the hell? Tight beamed and encrypted with Talon codes?"

Routing the transmission to the terminal in his cabin, Devon stood and hurried toward the bridge exit.
"I'm gonna take this one in private - Mika and the others are on open comms, and this calls encrypted.  Also its tight-beamed.  That means whoever sent it knows exactly where we are - Kyvarr, get us an escape route plotted in case we have to run.  Doc, stay on the line with the Flare. Get as much info out of them as you safely can - tell them if there's nothing keeping them on the surface, they need to get moving."

Closing his cabin door behind him Devon sat at his terminal, plugged in his Talon commlink so it could decrypt the signal and then prevented his terminal from sending video by the simple expedient of hanging an unwashed t-shirts over the camera.  Finally he tapped the button that connected the call, making the ship tight-beam his own transmission back along the incoming signals path.

"This is the Nebula Drifter, identify yourself."

Re: Act 7.1: Corellian Sector

The feed flickers into life with video content alongside the vocal stream and an image of Cor's face appears on the vidscreen.

"Hello, Nebula Drifter, this is the Voidsong.  I would say 'long time no see,' as I am told that is a common saying in Basic between people who have not been in contact for some time but I note that I still cannot see you.  I doubt 'long time, still no see' particularly works as an idiom."

Cor's voice is the same as ever it was - cool, smooth, collected - but there is an undercurrent now that was not there earlier.  More confidence and more authority has crept into her tone - if it really is Cor, of course, and not just a complex charade put on by Parties Unknown for reasons beyond Devon's current knowledge.

"The Voidsong is at the edge of the system.  What is the status of your team?"

Heigren turned from the seperate comm station he'd been using and turned to the others.

"I just finished talking to the customs guy. Slotted us an exit vector for ninety minutes from now then got mighty cranky when I said I wasn't sure when we wanted to leave. Mixed among enough curses to make a drill sergeant blush, he indicated not to bother him again until we actually want to go. Which leaves us the question, how long are we waiting for Fiarr?"

Devon had to stop himself from snatching the t-shirt off the camera - the old Devon would have down that... but perhaps too much time spent round people like Zyra and Fiarr had rubbed off a little...

Forcing down his excitement and relief at the return of one of the more wayward vessel and crews in the Talons little fleet, Devon said:
"Good to see you again, Voidsong.  Call me paranoid all you want, but please confirm you are speaking freely by telling me what nickname I gave one of your droids?  Also, how did you know our location for the tight-beam?"

He couldnt help feel it was somewhat unfair to give Cor nothing but his voice to go on when he could see and hear her... and he didnt like having to distrust his friends, but Cor had been out of contact for a long time, and he had to be sure this wasnt an elaborate trap for the rest of his team.
On the bright side, it meant that he could delay having to explain his black eye for a few moments longer...

"You refer to CC9 as 'Doombot;' I am unsure if he appreciates it or simply tolerates it but he has not shot you yet so that is a good sign.  As for the tightbeam," Cor gives a light laugh, "remember that I half-own the ship in which you are now sitting.  I knew what to look for.  Your caution, however, is both wise and warranted.  Much is changing in the galaxy.  Flash and I have been privileged enough to witness part of it but that can all wait."

Cor's image sits back slightly.  "Do you need more proof?  Information on the coffee-machine-droid I began making when we parted company?  The circumstances of Arin's death?  Of Aryan's?  The... delightful discussion that followed the arrival in the Talons of myself and a certain Darvin Sloan, whose whereabouts are currently, perhaps thankfully, unknown?"

Re: Act 7.1: Corellian Sector

Relieved, Devon hurriedly pulled the t-shirt off the camera; revealing himself, his black-eye and his cabin to view.  He was grinning a big, relieved grin as he tossed the T-shirt in the direction of a pile of dirty laundry in the far corner of the room.

"Damn, don't remind me about Darvin, I'm still amazed that Flash didn't haul off and punch him out... it's good to have you back in one piece, Cor - don't mind tellin' you I've missed you guys."

Devon sat in silence for a moment, staring at the screen, then:
"We should probably focus on business for now, right?  You sound like you've found something big - anythin' you can tell me now, or is it best we wait till we can meet up?"

Cor arches an eyebrow at the screen as she sees Devon's black eye but doesn't comment on it - not yet.  Instead she simply nods.

"Yes, it should wait.  Barring unexpected events we will reach you in about ten minutes.  Then we can all convene on the Voidsong and we shall discuss things in detail.  What is your crew's status?" she asks again.  "Are you ready to move or will you take some time to gather?"

Kyvarr watched Devon go. Clearly in his rush he'd forgotten she had no skill at plotting hyperspace coordinates. She'd have to improvise.

"Dohr can you plot emergency an hyperspace course?  I have no idea how to do it
If you can't why don't you warm up one of the fighters in case we need an escort?"

She flicked on the comm to the Ghtroc.  "Lunar Flare.  Still waiting on an ETA for your arrival, over."

"At the moment we got the Flare down on the surface an' from what they were able to tell me over open comms Heigren has made contact with some local anti-Imperial group, Sheila has possibly arranged a meeting with another group, an' Fiarr is off doing something an' has her comm switched off.  One moment, I better tell the bridge to expect you."

Switching channels, Devon used the ships internal comms to send a message up to Kyvarr and Dohr on the bridge.
"Don't panic, guys - that transmission was from Cor and Flash aboard the Voidsong.  They'll be pullin' alongside us in about ten minutes.  Any updates from the Flare?
"

OOC:  And yes - Devon (and I) had totally forgotten!  :)

Dohr shook his head at Kyvarr’s question: “I fear not. I served in the army and used what little brain capacity I have to study medical science. There was no time to train for such skills.” If the second part of the reply was a joke, it wasn’t a good one and didn’t even make the Doc himself chuckle. ”As for warming up a fighter… That I might be able to do if it goes at all like what we had to do in the simulator back on Nar Shaddaa.”

The Kel Dor stood up to head for the cargo bay and the fighters, but he didn’t manage to get off the bridge before Devon’s voice spoke on the intercom. The status report made the worried doctor smile as he dropped back into his seat. Dohr reached for the coms button of the station. ”Copy that, Devon. Finally some good news. Kyvarr just hailed the Flare, but no reply yet.”

Cor puts the mic on mute, sighs and turns the mic back on again. Devon, of course, will still see her shut her eyes briefly as she does so. When she speaks again her tone is calm and patient.

"She is out of touch and has turned her comm off. I assume from your words that she did not say why prior to doing so. How long has she been out of communication?"

Mika's eyes turn skywards...   "Tell Kyvarr that her buddy has gone walk-about and if she's got a problem with it, take it up with Fiarr if and when she shows back up..  As far as customs, I don't think we want to be overly informative.  How about tell them our preparations are taking longer than anticipated and we'll advise shortly.

If Fiarr doesn't chime in sometime in the near future, we'll have to figure out what to do about it.  We'll have to get into some serious trouble before I start arguing for leaving anyone behind, but maybe we need to figure out what the options are if we get pushed that way.  Maybe there's some public transportation available for her to take or something."

Releasing the intercom button, Dohr cast a look at the screen expecting the Voidsong to appear any second. And he did not have to wait long before the L4000's identification was recognized by the Drifter's sensors and the ship appeared on the screen. But to his surprise Cor's ship wasn't alone. Another blip materialized next to the Voidsong... It was Devon's Firespray, Moonshadow.

The Doc reached at the intercom again: "Devon, are you sure Flash was on board the Voidsong? She is not coming in alone. The Moonshadow is here too."

Heigren chuckled good naturedly. "I don't think so Mika. I have no plans to antagonise our bosses, especially when we're the ones not responding. We either need to make a plan or tell Devon everything and let him decide.

Personally I'm not worried. She's only been gone four hours. If our meeting is in five days and we only need three to get there we can give Fiarr half a day.  Either that or maybe we can arrange passage on another ship for one of us to brief Devon in person and let him decide."

Mika shrugs.  "I don't mind giving Fiarr a half day, maybe even a bit more, but you said Customs was getting impatient.  I took that to mean that maybe we don't have the luxury of cooling our heels for a half day or so.  If you can arrange it with them, I'm fine with it.  I'd hate to leave Fiarr behind.  I like the idea of getting someone up to bring the others up to speed though.  I'm not sure how to fix that though, less Devon wants to wrangle clearance with Customs for another ship to land."

A few moments after Dohr reports the Moonshadow on sensors a transmission comes in on Talon comms.

"Greetings from beyond slowpokes.  Yo Devon, got your precious ship.  Still a sloth in hyperspace, though far better than before her upgrade.  Still she's a nice ride othewise.  Those insects wanted to do all kind of crazy things to her.  Kinda tempted to let 'em.  Yeeeeehaaaaa!"

The Moonshadow flies in and beyond her rated top speed, Flash was pushing the engines beyond the red and overshot the Nebula Drifter.  Collision alarms went off on the Drifter as Flash flew a LOT closer to the other ship than most would consider safe.

"You tell me - we had to split the team to cover more ground.  Plus I was hesitant about bring a damn pocket-carrier disguised as a freighter into an Imperial controlled port.  This is as close as I was willing to bring the Drifter.  I'll see you down at the main lock."

Hurrying to the airlock, Devon waited to greet Cor as she came aboard - or more likely to greet a droid proxy.

Whilst he waited for the docking manoeuvres to complete, he listened to the ship-to-ship chatter coming over the Talon-coms.  The shipjacker just grinned and rolled his eyes at Flash's assessment of Moonshadow.  He knew the Duros would never be happy with a ship, regardless of how fast it went - it would never be enough.  On Planet Maniac (as Devon liked to call the place where Flash kept his brain) what the Duros had just said was high praise.

"Hey, if you're willin' to pay for the upgrades, then next time tell 'em to go nuts."

Was his only response to Flashes description of his beloved ship as a 'sloth'.

When the airlock to the Voidsong opens it is not Cor waiting there but, instead, her pair of B1 battle droids.  They are (as always) armed with blaster rifles.

"Mmmistress Cor welcomes you to the Vvvoidsong," one of them says with a slight digital slur, "and is wwwaiting for you annnd your crew in the dining hall."  As is fairly typical of their kind the B1 droids habitually speak with far more inflection than the monotonous CC9, their vocabulators capable of more expression but less intimidation.
