Destiny: Kyoko's Shuttle

Fine silks and tapestries cover the harsh metal walls of one of Destiny's two shuttles.  The room is normally basked in a warm and inviting glow of candles and dim lamps.  Chinese calligraphy paintings hang on some of the walls and the faint smell of incense floats on the air.

Re: Destiny- Kyoko's Shuttle

Kyoko sighs as she brings the brush to paper, seemingly flowing at random over the paper. It had been a busy week, the information she'd collected on the last two stops had been quite copious and had taken much of her time. In addition her duties about the ship, which she had offered to help maintain her certifications, had been fairly common. A ship as old as the Destiny took quite a bit of care to maintain.

Still, she mused as she finished the figure in the picture and felt the stress fade from her, it was definitely a change from helping the factors at the charter house or wondering how to politely decline clients when she found out she didn't have time enough. She looked down at the figure and smiled in a content manner.

The figure is a freehand/manga stylizd version of Daffy duck

Re: Destiny- Kyoko's Shuttle

Focused and centered she puts aside the brush and gets up. With her focus renewed she was ready to face her quarry and see about discuss plans. She pulled on her silk robe and damped down the burning insense stick.

Now focused, perpared and dressed she strode from her shuttle to confront her problem.

Re: Destiny- Kyoko's Shuttle

Kyoko sat down in front of the console, and smiled to herself. It was truly amazing how folk DIDN'T notice a companion that often, she had watched the whole event in the hangar. The gunman and gentlemen bristling at each other. Not even a day into the dark and folk are already bristling, she considered as she mulled her options over. Best to stay in her ship and let the others come to her for a bit, a companion's skills could be used to help them get at ease, but her presense could disrupt more than aide.

She looked at the console and considered what to do. She tapped on the keys and waited while the query she entered was processed. Valon

There was a slight knocking at the opening to the shuttle, and Charlie's head popped in through the door, looking around.  "Kyoko?  You...are you here?  She whispered just in case Kyoko was contacting a client, or even sleeping.

Closing out the enquiry and saving what she got, Kyoko gets up and smooths her robes into place. "Of course not Charlene, feel free to enter." Kyoko says as she pulls out the small sugar cookie and sets the kettle to boil, always to have the ships Engineer visit. "Is this a social call, or do you want me to help you check the baffles again? she asks with a genuinely 'happy to see you' smile.

"What?"  She quirks an eyebrow, stepping in again.  She's still dressed in her clothes from yesterday, one of the few things that she owned that wasn't a work setup.  However, it's easy for her to smile.  Kyoko was the only person on the boat that didn't call her Charlie, and after yesterday, anything that makes her feel more like a woman is wonderful.  "Oh no, we're okay.  Destiny's running like a dream, I won't even think of doing any work on it until we dock on Valon.  Course, that all depends on whether Kale'll let me leave the boat or not.  No, I'm just saying...you know, saying hi and all."

Charlie sat down, crossing her arms on her knees, leaning over as she sat.  "Honey, yes.  I did meet him, the hired gun.  He's a bit rough, I guess...but I think he'll be alright.  I'm more worried that he's gonna get bored sitting on the ship, maybe have a few drinks and take off a shot, let the water in, you know?"  She shrugged a bit, taking a cookie off the tray and nibbling off the end.  "If the Captain trusts him, though, I trust him."

"The captain probably just doesn't want to stay on the planet for long, it must be rough.  He probably just doesn't want you getting hurt.  He looks out for all of us like that...he's got good intentions, you just need ta trust them, that's all."

Kyoko asks as she gets up and opens a chest, pulling out the new clothes she had picked out for Charlene, the 'old clothes' she just happened to have. Sitting them down in front of the girl she smiled and looked at her with a resolute look on her face. "I will take great insult if you decline. So, you've no options but to accept.. and when you're ready, let me know and we'll discuss how to make you look your best. Kyoko leans over and kisses her on her forehead. "You find.. in my business, that heart matters a lot, and you've a grand one. Do not doubt yourself so much." Kyoko sighed internally, wishing she hadn't made the decision not to take ships company as clients. Charlene would blossom well with a little help and not all companion's services required sensual arts.

"Depends on how long we're at port.  I'm gonna take the chance to go down under the belly, take a look at some of the landing gear.  Kale mentioned something about it wasn't feeling quite right when we took from Persephone, and I'd rather find this problem on the surface than when we're out in the middle of nowhere."  Charlie finishes the tea, looking back just in time to see Kyoko taking out the clothes, smiling again.  She touches the material, looking back up with a smirk in the corner of her eyes.

"You....well, I know I can't turn them down, I guess."  She ran a finger along a seam, letting out a bit of a sigh.  "I'm just...I know I'm a dreamer about these things.  Like I said, when we're making berth for more than a day, and if the Captain don't have a million things that he wants me doing to make her run better...not that she can run better, of course, as I've got Destiny in the shape of her life.  You know what I'm saying, though."  She smiled again, finaly looking down, managing the appropriate words for the situation.  "Thank you, Kyoko.  I know you don't necessarily like it here, or think that maybe you're losing business, but I do love having you around..."

"I'll, uh...when we make berth, i'll try these on.  Way I see it, everyone can be asleep then, and they can't see...well, something that outta place.  Don't want to startle.  Then again, walking in anything with a skirt on a second story...that's just not appropriate, you know."  She managed another smile, bowing her head slightly as she took a few steps back.  "You know where I'm always at, though.  Come find me if you need me."  She does a last nod, stepping out the door and making her way back to the engine room...

Re: Destiny- Kyoko's Shuttle

Sometime after Charlene's departure.

Kyoko smiles as the small heating coil worked it magic and set it aside so the rich meat stew could settle while she set about making some tea. She'd most assuredly have to get another coil so she can cook and make tea at the same time. It was a quiet touch that made the shuttle her home that much more, that and she felt the need to avoid the captain for a bit. He would undoutably foil her inner calm.

She reached into a nearby case and pulled out the very last of her special items, a nice fresh green apple. She sighed as she sniffed it and set it by the bowl. Hopefully she'd be able to pick up one of her supply cache's soon, the idea of protein all the time was simply unbearable.

OOC: Feel free for anyone to smell the real food cooking :D

"You didn't knock." Kyoko says calmly as she sets her bowl and tea aside. She gets up and pours a cup of tea and sets it by the Captain. "I still have some the stew left, it's freeze dried, but I am afraid I only have the one apple left, and if you want it, you'll have to fight me for it."

Kyoko returns to her seat and looks at Kale. "I seem to recall this very annoying man, the same one that said my aide in navigation, maintence and medical functions on board, didn't merit him giving me a stipend for my work, yet I'm still expected to somehow entertain clients without time ashore or forewarning of where we are going. The same annoying man who complains when I do appear in front of passengers in the galley and the same one who promised I would have my privacy in this shuttle." Kyoko says as she returns to her meal, the lacquered chop sticks working delicately as she keeps her eyes on the captain.

Kyoko gets up and shuts the hatch to the shuttle behind the captain, the picture of perfect poise and restraint. After making sure she was alone and the thick door was more than sure to stop what she was going to do, she sat down on her bed and growled in frustration.

"Liu kou shui de biao zi he hou zi de ben er zi, no wonder he liked that thug so much.. they are a pair!" Kyoko says with quiet fury, releived that she hadn't stooped to cursing in the presense of that .. man. She reached behind her 'headboard' curtain, and drew out a long bundle, pausing to pull out a smooth round stone before pulling the katanna out of it's scabbard and settling back on the bed.

Soon the soothing sound of her blade being sharpened filled the shuttle's main compartment.

"It's a small ship, and you two have been rather smitten with one another. And, I might add, I am a companion, I have been taught to read people for a living. One of the reasons I do not play cards, it would upset the captain if I won back my rent payments. Would you like something? A glass of wine perhaps?" Kyoko shuts down the terminal, privacy would have to wait till later, she figured the doctor wished to discuss matters of the heart and she was more than content to do so. Given that was one of the many things she did with clients.

sure Acacia said. I understood you knowing, but everyone else?  You have any ideas?  I mean I love Ren, in fact I have never loved anyone like I love him.  I want to spend every night in his arms and I want to spend every day at his side.  Does that sound silly?

Re: Destiny- Kyoko's Shuttle

Kyoko opens a trunk and carefully pulls out two elegant glasses and a well preserved bottle, making the whole set up and pouring a ritual as she mulls over the considerations. She hands one glass over to Acacia."You and Reiner are both collegues of mine, and like I said this is a small boat, so everyone eventually hears things in a context that makes it apparent. The question is, do you two want to come out and make it open. That way you don't have to needlessly hide your affections. I would say it would be for the best to do so. Not to mention.. you two could openly share a cabin.

Why don't you and I discuss ways we can get our freind the pilot to open up enough for you two to come out in the open. Or I could simply find you two on the flight deck one night... A smooth practiced movement by the companion puts it smoothly into spot, the tell-tells on the screen not really needed as she slips the ship into spot. A bank of green lights flick on as she slips into place. She smiles as she shuts down and rolls her seat back.

"And home again." she sighs ruefully as she listens to the little shuttle spin down and the Destiny's life support systems kick in. She opens her little box, and with a wide smile she opens the hatch. Placing the box by one of the vents she settles back and starts about making some cocoa.. knowing the scent wafting from the box will find it's way all over the ship. Callign to at least two particular sweet tooths.

Places one hand in her lap and extends the other one with grace, and instinctively, grasps onto an imaginary sleeve, moving it so it does not get in the way or soiled with the hand that was in her lap, reaches for the cup of tea, picks it up, places her other hand under the tea cup and sips.

Kendra walks over to the trunk, pulls out the incense, lights it and sets it high, so as to catch the scent but not get smoke in the face. She returns to Kyoko and assist her in removing her robe, helps to position her face down on the bed. Sets up the pillows in way that frames and cradles her face. With the beautiful scarlet and embroidered light blanket found in the trunk she covers Kyokos lower body. Kendra, coats her hands lightly with lotion, also found in the trunk and starts to rub Kyoko's back and neck, gently caressing with her fingertips, squeezing firmly but without roughness the muscles around her neck, shoulder blades, sides, lower back and along her spine. "My, you are tense. You've got alot of knots in your shoulders here.". A while later she places her hands on their sides and in a chopping motion lightly hits Kyoko's back, she changes back and forth from this to kneeding the muscles, focusing on the hard knots, loosening them. She works quitely.

Kyoko nods, and hums lightly as Kendra starts. By the time Kendra works downward along her spine she's dozing lightly. She hadn't felt so at ease since leaving the Chapter house. She mulled over the hurt she had seen in the massue's eyes. There was a wound that needed gentle work to heal. Perhaps she could persuade the woman to talk about it sometime.

Time, she mused, was something she had plenty of. And plenty of folks on board needed help. Perhaps she needed to revise her standards of behavior in dealing with the crew.

By the time Kendra started to kneed the knots out her drowsy state was clearly a sleeping one.

"What?" Kyoko says as wakes. She smiled at the face that she was covered and clearly well relaxed, Kendra had a lot of the skills of a companion for sure, too bad she didn't have the confidence of one. But she could work on that, perhaps more eventually.

She slid out of the bed and pulled on a robe, fastening it as she slid her feet into the soft house shoes. She could feel the hum of the ship, clearly she had slept thru lift off, the gentle shimmy feeling of the ship's drive giving gravity.

She stooped to pick up the rolls, closing the warmer box as she smiles.

After getting their ship back the crew of Destiny began to pick up the pieces that Kyron had shattered.  Against most of the crews wishes Kyron was kept alive - although no official plans had yet been made for what to do with him when it became apparent that Wei-Li was falling into critical condition. Destiny needed medical help and fast.  They made way for the nearest planet at the time - Orisis.

ME!  I almost killed the ones I love through my actions.  She said.  She had no tolerance to alcohol and was already moving into drunkiness.

Lei came into the small airlock leading to Kyoko's shuttle, and came to a halt at the closed door. She'd never been in the shuttle, and hadn't really talked with the companion, either, so she was a little nervous about barging in. Lei decided to wait there for now. She sat down against the wall of the airlock and drew her knees up to keep out of the way. They'd be able to find her easy enough here.

Before Acacia had a chance to answer Kyoko Kale's voice came up over the intercomm.  Acacia wrinkled her brow, "This doesn't sound good." she said, her heart dropping slightly, she'd taken about all she could of ... well all of this ... she really hoped that everything was alright as she stood up and said good-bye to Kyoko.  "Be safe." she said, feeling slightly stupid telling the obviously capable Companion to be safe but sincerely hoping that she would be.

She stepped out of the shuttle and saw Lei sitting there.  "Lei's right here, Kyoko." she said, smiling at the young girl before heading to the infirmary to get Wei-Li.

She'd hardly just sat down when the doc rushed out.
Lei quietly stepped into the shuttle, and looked around wide eyed. Everything was so... rich... and luxurious in here. She stood staring just inside the hatch as it slid closed behind her. Lei hadn't imagined that anything was like this on Destiny, she'd gotten used to the patched, slightly rusty and worn in look of the ship. Lei reached out to gently touch one of the silks hanging against the wall, rubbing the fabric between her fingers and grinning slightly at the feel of it.

"I'll be undocking and hitting planet in five minutes." Kyoko says as she hurries though her preflight check list. "You might want to come up and take a seat in one of the flight stations dear." she calls as she buckles herself in.

She undocks and pulls out of the ship's cradle with a smooth movement. "Destiny, this is Kyoko Monroe. We're clear, I'll find someplace quiet and out of view to keep our young guest." She says before turning off the transmitter. Her hands run smoothly over the controls as she sets the shuttle for a slow high orbit around the planet below before turning to the cortex and tapping in an access code.

"I should count myself lucky, I'm sure you'll be less trouble than Kale would be. Still, need to see what the family has on hand. Hmm.. office building, massive complex, Legal offices, no suprises.." Kyoko smiles to Lei as she continues to scroll though a massive list, giving her a smile and a wink. "Don't tell the captain, he'd increase my rent if he knew. Ah, a nice quiet, set of rooms with a pad large enough to take the shuttle. I hope you like my cooking, all we have in it is the custodial drones and housekeeping work for it. I am sure it will be good enough."

Lei walked up to the front of the shuttle, trying to look at as much of its interior as she could on the way past. She sat down quietly in the co-pilot's seat, and fiddled with the straps until she'd worked out how to secure them properly. Kyoko seemed to want to talk just to fill the silence in the shuttle, and that was okay with Lei, listening was better than bieng yelled at or having to answer questions she didn't want to think about. Keeping her hands well away from the consoles, just in case, Lei started intensely watching what the companion was doing as she listened to her. Maybe she'd be able to work out some of the controls from watching them in use...

Lei turned straight to the screen. Selecting the navigation section, she started reading through it at a quick pace. She started just skimming over the pages after the third page, and only stopped to do the example questions at the end of the section. So far, it looked like there was nothing new...
Lei had solved all of the example problems for the first two chapters by the time the shuttle had hit atmo, and looked up from her work at the first shaking of turbulence. The window was filled with a red glow from the heat of re-entry, but there wasn't much else visible. Her gaze back to the screen, and she skipped a few chapters ahead to see if there was anything here she didn't know. She skipped through to a chapter on 'advanced' techniques, and started working on the problems there. She read each question, staring at the screen and drumming her fingers on her knees in a strange rythm, then entering the solution for the console to confirm. By the time Kyoko had piloted the shuttle to their destination, Lei had given up learning anything new about navigation, and had loaded up the flight control chapters. The console confirmed that she had supplied acceptable solutions for all the problems so far...

Kyoko breathes in deeply, as she moves into the next move of her kata. The blade held clear and smooth as she moves from one stance to the next with the elegance that the companion did everything she did. In the background was the soft sound of drums and cymbals as she moved slowly and languidly through her forms, her body's well toned structure showing as she works out.

As she works, the monitor to her terminal chimes, another message from Osiris most likely. Since their departure, she had discretely made it a point to keep up on the fall out of the ship's last trip there, get updates from Alec on the family business and find out how those who she had 'butted' heads with handled the fallout. Never would do to find out that there was an enemy out there looking for you after they found you.

Paul raised a brow, a tight smile forming on a face obviously unused to smiling, "A companions shuttle, well that's something I haven't seen.  Imagine I'll look more out of place there then you would in my humble abode - but I've always been one for making myself step out of my element and considering I don't really have an element anymore I suppose I wouldn't be feeling any less at home there then I do anywhere else.  You bringing this shuttle of yours to me, or am I coming to you?" he shook his head, he was embarrassed but hid it pretty well, "Don't exactly know how to go about arranging a meeting like this."  Paul knew he wasn't going to be like most of the men this beautiful woman was used to.  Paul wasn't a rich man.  He just happened to not have anything to spend his money on so it had begun to accumulate away ... when he realized how much he had saved up he had figured that the only thing that would be completely knew to him is spending every penny he had on something he had never experienced before - a companion.

Course the idea hadn't come to him til he had seen that Regina was actually going to be having a registered companion touching down.  He was probably more curious then anything as to why a woman like that would even be on a rock like this.

"I'm in orbit waiting on you Destiny. I only took one client, dropped him off last night and settled down for a nice rest in zero-g. Waiting for approach vectors, shouldn't you still be in bed entertaining your lady love?"

Kyoko settled back in her seat, sipping her tea with a heartfelt sigh. Olympian Height's Hybrid, costing more per liter than her fuel did, but this morning she felt she had earned it. Last night had been a very good evening, a man had been healed. Kale would never understand that part of being a companion. To him and his kind, she'd be always a sex vendor. Nothing more. Such a shame, he could use a companion to get him to work out some of his issues.

She tapped the screen and pulled up the reports she had been making to the guild and the ones she had been getting on Kendra. She wasn't going to leave the woman to rot if she could help it, but barring very blunt methods involving massive amounts of money the company might lose, she didn't see a direct way. Having to call on a planetary offical or the Parliment contacts smacked of over kill. Besides, the career's you skuttle today have a way of coming back to haunt you later on.

Sound advice she had read from her father's journal. She closed out Kendra's files nad started working on the contact list she had. Not her client list, but the other one that the guild had provided. One where you wired funds to men with slang names, and some time later you get data from questionable, and usually untracable, sources and they faded back into the wood work.

Sips her tea and smiles coyly. "As I recall, I owe you a medical center of your choice Acacia. One that would rival anything you could find on a ship of this size."

Acacia smiled, she really didn't like the idea of Kyoko spending her money on her ... but the offer of new shiny medical equipment was rather hard to turn down, "Okay, on one condition - when we hit planetside you let me buy you dinner or something?  You know, somewhere nice?  Maybe we can make a girls night of it - have Charlie come along." she actually kind of liked that idea ... hopefully this wouldn't be one of those jobs and they'd be able to have some fun planetside, ya know, if Kale would even let them off the boat.

I have not read up on the Companion's Guild, but it does not seem difficult from outward appearances. Why wouldn't Geoff approve?"

She was starting to get a little confused. She had never known Geoff to be against her doing what would help her succeed. And if being a Companion for a short time would allow her to earn money for her greenhouse- certaintly there could be no harm in that.

Lei wasn't so sure about having some of her new ideas liscenced out. She felt that she should speak to Geoff about it, especially since he was her brother. He would make sure that all of those matters were handled appropriately. She hoped that he was doing okay, wherever he was.

She turned toward the screen and began reading about the guild and what they did. Her eyes widened as the information began to register in her head. She wasn't so sure if this was the type of life for her, but doing databases would be a cinch to do.

Then she began looking through the clientel list and went one by one through each biography and even went into research on them as well.

Kyoko watched the reaction from Lei's body language through the ship monitor. She had expected such, but in and of itself it wasn't a bad sign. Suprise was always a first reaction, but the girl had clearly moved beyond the basics and even now was reading it while she worked. If she truly thought she could do it, Lei would ask. If she did, Kyoko would talk with Geoff. It woldn't do, she noted to herself wryly, to have to kill him in self defencse.

He wiped it away and opened his mouth to speak again, but found himself at a loss for words at the moment. He balled his fist and brought it to his mouth, biting upon it slightly to steady and focus himself.

He took a deep breath afterwards and fixed his gaze on Kyoko and began to speak slowly. "So....I understand that...Lei is doin' some work fer ya....right?", he said in a low tone with the same tremulous smile on his face,"'Cause that's what she was tellin' me, ya know?"

She leans agaisnt the far wall of the cabin. "So, I opened the basic primers and set her up tabulating a contact list. Do you realize that of all the people on board, she's easily the most intelligent? Charlene and I are smart, you and Kale have a.. rustic cunning the serves well out her, and Acaica and I are multible degree holders, but compared to Lei we all pale in comparison?"

She eases the hammer back but keeps the gun in sight. "To be honest, I fear to train her as a Companion, which.. she'd do well at I'm sure as she does well at everything she tries, would be a waste of her talents. Her mind is.. phenomonal. While we were in the Core, she did almost a weeks worth of self study on elementary piloting in about 4 hours. I can't say what she'd be best suited for, but a compainion's calling isn't for her I'm sure."

Re: Message

Geoff had listened to Kyoko speak, trying very hard to focus on what she said. He knew that what she was saying was basically what he wanted to hear, even if she was taking a long time to say it. She didn't think the Companion life was for Lei. That, however, wasn't his main concern in this whole thing. In the end, if Lei wanted to be a Companion, there was little Geoff could do about it. All he had a problem with was that Kyoko had given Lei information on things he didn't think she was ready to know about.

He took a deep breath and visibly calmed as he looked to Kyoko, meeting her gaze evenly. "Look. I know that she's smart. I know that she's smarter than everybody on this gorram ship combined. Hell, probably smarter than anybody in the gorram 'verse.", he said in a low and even tone,"I don't care if Lei would decide to be a companion eventually. It's her decision an' I would support her in it. Here's my issue. She's intelligent in the book ways, but not in any other way at the moment. Ya gave her access ta information that she had no context to judge it by."

He sighed and shook his head. "She came ta me ta ask 'bout sex. How it felt an' such. But what if she hadn't? What if she just sorta kept this information to herself? Ya know how private she is 'bout some things. What if she had waited ta test out theories on her own somewhere?", he said with a deep sigh and a shrug,"Look, she may be hyper intelligent or all that, but she's still a kid. Ta me, she's my little sister. So, before ya gave her any information like that, ya shoulda asked me. That's all I want, ya know?"

Geoff shrugged to the thought of selling Lei's designs. He knew she was smart enough to be designing things other people might want, but he hadn't expected such a thing so soon. Still, it didn't seem bad. There was money in it and all Lei would be doing is what she was planning on doing anyway so he couldn't see any harm in that.

I'll admit that I don't know a lot, but it's all I got.", he said with a slight laugh,"An', jus' fer the record, it would be kinda obvious ya ain't on a ship like this fer money. Hell, we're the crew an' we ain't made no money in awhile."

"As fer Lei, it's pretty easy. Jus' don't give her nothin' 'til ya talks ta me. Simple as that.", he said with a shrug,"I mean, well, not all the time. Simple stuff is fine. Stuff that's gotta do with pilotin' an' schoolin', ya can show her whatever ya want. Jus' the sensitive stuff that may lead ta awkward questions later. I mean....well, she'd probably find a way ta find out anyway, but at least I'd have some warnin'."

"I'll try to give you warning Geoff, but I won't foolish enough to lie and say I'm going to screen her circulum though you. I am not even sure I can keep track of all she's learning. She needs a little of both from us I think. I can cover the mechanics of life, but I think your courseness is needed as well." she pours two glasses, the amber liquid swirling in the two tumblers. She offers one to him and puts the bottle on the chest carefully.

"One of my father's collection. It's possible some of the last single malt that came from 'Earth that Was' grains. Everything these days is made from engineered grain. It's quite.. unique and well over 100 years old. The last time it was drunk, my father had just asked my mother to marry him."

Geoff sighed and nodded, agreeing with what she said about Lei. "Well, I guess that's the best that can be hoped fer when it comes ta Lei. But at least she ain't gonna be learnin' out in the streets like I did. That's somethin'.", he said and then laughed,"Fer a long time, I thought sex was somethin' ya only got if ya paid fer it or if ya were drunk! Heh. Yep. It's good that Lei can learn the facts....though the tellin' o' those facts is gonna be hard on my nerves."

Geoff takes the offered drink, looking apologetic. "Aw, ya know, I really shouldn't. Cap'n tol' me not ta drink on ship an' we're supposed ta be talkin' 'bout the plan an' then I gotta tell Lei 'bout se...ya know, one drink won't hurt.", he said as he took a sip of the liquid,"Hmmm. She raises the tumbler to her nose and sniffs the frangrance. "I find it entertaining that the bottle is drunk only yards from where it was last time. It was on this ship that my father proposed, they spent the better part of a year touring the core on this ship. It's a close secret that I was born in medical, do keep that to yourself only one other person on board knows." She raises the glass and looks to Geoff. "To teaching your foster child how to live?"

Geoff smiled wryly at that. "Well, thank all the powers in the 'verse for technicalities then.", he said with a nod. He quirked his head curiously as she relayed the fact that Destiny was the very ship her father proposed to her mother and that she was born on. "Heh. That's quite a coincidence ta find yerself on this very ship again then, I reckon. Well, actually, I get the feelin' it ain't a coincidence at all, is it? Heh. Don't worry 'bout it. He then raised the glass in return and smiled. "Ta teachin' my little sister how ta live.", he corrected and then took a drink.

He shakes it off quickly and takes another sip of the liqour before placing the tumbler down on the trunk next to the bottle carefully.

"Well, much as I hate ta leave when there's alcohol ta be drunk, I gotta get goin'. Cap'n's gonna be bothered if I ain't there when he gets back ta the dinin' hall. Perhaps she should add in another level of security, after all Lei had access to her syetem.  Her finger lingered over the palm scanner for a second before adding her hand print to the lock. Her private thoughts and journal entries weren't something she wanted to have the others to have access to.

Finished she pulled up her mail, time to see how her contacts were helping the one person she couldn't save from the authorities.

After successfully delivering the stamp to the Professor and despite the loss of their first mate, the crew of Destiny headed back into the black.  Back to work.  A few jobs later has left them with a crate from Xiaygin to be delivered to Torrance Station.  They've just docked at the space station located on the rim.

Its now been almost a month since the museum job and Rhaef leaving - the wounds are healing but they haven't been forgotten yet.

After their daring escape from Torrance Station the crew of Destiny was left broken and beaten ... and one crew member short.  The mourning had just begun for the crew but they had to press on.  They dropped the young boy which Kale, Geoff, and Wei-Li had saved off with his father and then turned to Paquin for Ren's funeral.  It was a short trip that left all of them with heavy hearts but Ren's death had effected no one as hard as Acacia.  So two weeks later found the crew of Destiny on Osiris saying goodbye to their doctor.

And although he was millions of miles away, as Destiny and her crew suffered ... so did Rhaef ...

Kyoko slipped into her shuttle with a sigh. Somehow, she mused, the ship's family enviorment had changed. She knew the big cause of that, the lose of Ren had hit everyone pretty hard. She doubted that there would be any easy way to let his memory fade anytime soon. Not that she felt it would do the fallen crewman any amount of justice if they did.

She shook her head as she lit some incense and sat down at her terminal, clearing Lei's last work out and pulling up her secured corresondence to answer. Hopefully it would keep her thoughts from returning to the fallen and others.

Re: Message

Kyoko sat in her bed, starring at the walls once more. All this death had brought back memories long ago put by the wayside. She sighed and leaned back. On some level, she'd cared for Ren...probably not the same way that the rest of the crew had, certainly not Acacia, but she had always liked him.

Rhaef was missing too, and Kyoko knew that weighed heavily on this crew as well.

This crew...was she part of this crew? Kyoko shrugged to no one in particular and fell all the way onto her bed, so that she was now staring at the ceiling. This crew, this ship. Technically and currently, her home. It was that she didn't care for all of them in her own way...it was just hard to show it to such, uneducated...

Kyoko paused again. No, they weren't uneducated. They merely had been raised and trained differently in their own capacities. Kyoko sighed, frustrated. She didn't want to belittle anyone on this crew. Not after all they'd been through. Well, excepting that newcomer...Drake? Dak? Whatever, he annoyed her, which was sad because she'd interacted with him once. Kyoko sighed and stood up. It was a confined space in here, and she wanted to walk...her correspondence had all been answered, and she had no other engagements.

Kyoko sighed exasperatedly as she locked the door to her shuttle and stripped off the ruined outfit. Her meeting with the captain was very soon, so the best she could do was dry off and make herself look presentable. She grabbed a towel, drying her hair before twisting into a bun and putting a set of ornamental sticks through it to hold it in place.

She grabbed a nice looking outfit of crimson and gold, putting it on as she reapplied a light coating of make-up. She examined herself, then pursed her lips. Now to discuss the deplorable affair with the captain.

The crew of Destiny has finally managed to get itself back on its feet.  After a trying past few months things are starting to go back to normal.  The absence of Ren and Acacia is still felt but the ships newest members have begun to find a home on board the old freighter.  Most relationships have been mended and although there are still some unanswered questions between members of the crew life has been peaceful.

However, after a few months of excitement and trials the crew has discovered that the cash flow has come to a sputtering halt.  The crew needs a job and soon.  First rule of the black is to keep flying.  Fortunately, one of Kale's contacts managed to put him in touch with the infamous Sin Twins.  The girls are probably the most ... unpredictable of contacts, one can never be quite certain what they're getting into when dealing with them.  But one thing is for certain, the pay-out is always good.  The crew has set up a meeting with the twins in a casino on Santo to get more details about the possible job.

Re: Message

Lei sat comfortably in Kyoko's shuttle atop a pile of silk pillows.  A portable terminal sat in her lap and her eyes flicked across the screen quickly as she listened to the soft music that permeated the air.  Lei liked it on Kyoko's shuttle, if only for the novelty.  It was like stepping into a different world when you compared it to the rest of the ship.

Within moments Lei finished reading the passage on the screen, this time it was about the economies of the various planets in the 'verse.  Kyoko insisted that she spend a little time each day in her shuttle studying.  Sometimes she would work on the terminal like she did now, sometimes Kyoko would work with her.  She said that all children had to go to school, especially ones with a mind like hers.  Lei went because it made Kyoko happy, but oftentimes she found the material too easy, despite the fact that Kyoko kept trying to provide her with more difficult material.  At least it was better then just rifling around the ship on her own trying to gain information.

Lei answered the questions that were now on the screen.  She got them all correct - she always did.

"Done." she said, glancing up at Kyoko who was seated at the other side of the shuttle, "Now can we go say goodbye to Connor?" she asked.  The Captain had told them that Connor was going to be leaving about a week ago.  Lei hadn't spent much time with him but the crew seemed to think it very important to say goodbye properly.  Lei had even made a card out of some old paper she had found in Charlie's bunk.  Charlie almost never went in there so Lei had figured it was okay to use something that she probably didn't even know she had.  In neat handwriting Lei had printed:

"Given the size of the solar system and the current population which occupies it there is a 34.576% chance we will meet again.  Goodbye Connor!  - Lei"

Re: Message

Kyoko smiled at Lei as the girl announced that she was already done. Despite the best training the academy could offer, Kyoko knew that this girl was far beyond her own level when it came to academia. But, Kyoko figured useful and pertinent studying and information might keep Lei a bit focused and round her out more.

One could be extremely intelligent, but one also had to be able to harness that intelligence, or else it was all wasted.

Kyoko nodded her approval. Lei aced yet another test. Kyoko smiled warmly and glanced down at the card, and the smile widened. It was a touching gesture, and she was sure Connor would appreciate it. Kyoko sighed contentedly. Despite the immense danger and physical harm their last two "missions" had presented to them, Kyoko was beginning to feel more and more like she belonged on Destiny. There was no longer a frenetic need to bash heads with everyone. Kyoko was finding a sort of serenity aboard the ship. She wondered if it showed at all outwardly?

Kyoko nodded to Lei's question.

"Yes, I think we should head down now..."

Lei smiled and hopped up from her spot atop the pillows.  She closed the terminal and stored it before meeting Kyoko by the doorway, "Did you know that 67% of Santo's revenue is generated by people participating in a statistically unproductive trade of money for a 2.31% chance of acquiring substantially more?"

Lei looked up at the companion, "They call it gambling.  Geoff wants to do it and told me I wasn't allowed to tell him about the statistics anymore," she shook her head, "I don't know why." Lei wrinkled her nose, genuinely confused by how someone would not want to know the variables of a situation before diving into it.

Re: Message

While Kale, Geoff, and Rhaef made their deal with the Sin Twins the rest of the crew went about their day.  Charlie fueled the ship, and couldn't help but wince at the cost.  Fuel was an import on Santo and came at a cost because of that.  Hopefully Kale had landed the job, otherwise he wasn't going to be too happy.  Not that it could be helped, ship needed fuel to keep flying.

Back in the cargo bay Wei-Li mended the netting for a bit but all in all it was actually in good shape and needed little repair leaving her with more time then she would have liked to become a little nervous about her impending date with Dake.  A butterfly filled stomach had led her to Kyoko's shuttle where the companion had shared some of the finer points of dealing with men to the naive girl from Paquin.

Meanwhile, Dake decided to take Lei out to an arcade near-by the port for an hour.  Lei had been surprised by all of the lights and noises and colors that suddenly surrounded her.  It was unlike any place she had ever been before and quite a far cry from the "white place".  Dake swiftly found the Lei needed very little instruction in any of the games and easily mastered them, setting a few high scores on the machines much to the dismay of a few teenage boys who had watched with sullen faces as she neatly wiped their names from the leaderboards.

Laughing the two of them were just making their way back to Destiny where Charlie was finishing up some repairs on the landing gear and Wei-Li and Kyoko were still talking in the shuttle.  Kale, Geoff, and Rhaef were expected back at any moment and hopefully that meant that there would be work to do.

Kyoko crossed her arms and looked mock sadly over at Wei-Li. Both women knew the answer to her question.

"My sweet woman, you and I both know the Black attracts a certain...type of man and woman. Now, the trick is, getting to know what type of the type you've found yourself attracted to. In Geoff's case, he's loyal, but he's also simple and gruff, capable of mistakes, but very lovable in a rough and tumble sort of way..."

Kyoko's voice held a compassion for Wei-Li, but it also held a tinge of a note that let Wei-Li know that Kyoko probably wouldn't ever consider taking Geoff on as a client. Ever.

"And then you have Dake. The poor man is so naive in some ways, trailing in his brother's and Kale's footsteps, but, at the same time, Dake's a heart-breaker. He's unsure of what he wants, and thus, he'd be unsure of commitment."

Kyoko shrugged.

"Perhaps I'm overly critical due to a certain water incident that I shall not go back and discuss..."

Re: Message

Decision mad, Wei-Li squared her shoulders and prepared to talk to Geoff.  As she passed Kyoko she impulsively hugged the other woman.

"Thank you..."

She quickly moved away before she lost her resolve and headed towards the cargo bay.

Re: Message

Kyoko nodded as Wei-Li left, determined to seek out answers. It was good the woman was finally taking control of the situation. Kyoko smiled and stretched a bit, hoping that Wei-Li found what answers she'd come to Kyoko seeking. Permanence was something Companions understood and didn't, at least in Kyoko's opinion. Every Companion had to be able to simulate the feelings and emotions evoked by longer lasting relationships, should that be what the client wished, but rarely did a Companion find his or herself in a position to have one...in the line of work they enjoyed, it was hardly wise. And studying only got you so far...

Speaking of studying, where was Lei? The little one had another lesson waiting for her. Kyoko pursed her lips and thought for a moment, wondering if it was better to go seeking the girl, or waiting to see if she would come on her own.

Lei quietly approached the Companions door and knocked softly.  The sound barely carried inside the lusciously decorated shuttle.  She waited for Kyoko's reply to come in.

Kyoko stretched, and looked curiously over towards her door.

"Please, come in."

If it was Lei, Kyoko would be convinced the girl had some kind of psychic power, or perhaps a supernatural sense of timing? If not, well, who else could it be? Kyoko sat and wait to see.

Lei hit the controls and the door to the shuttle slid open.  She stepped quietly inside and closed the door behind her.

"I'm late.  I - I was caught up in a book I was reading." she confessed immediately.  She tried to look neutral but Kyoko could see guilt riddling her features.  She was late because she'd been out with Dake playing games all day.  Lei was a smart girl but she understood nothing about lying and it was completely obvious she was trying to.  It was really a silly thing to lie about but Lei was convinced that Kyoko would be terribly angry at Dake for taking her away from her studies.  She got the impression that the Companion didn't like the pilot much.

Kyoko smiled again. Lei was lying to her, it was written all over the girl's face. Kyoko's face still held the smile, but her mind was puzzled as to why Lei would lie about being late for lessons.

Huh.

Kyoko motioned for Lei to sit down with her.

"What was the name of the book? And what was it about?"

A look of terror shot across Lei's face.  The young girl must have read a million books since she first joined Destiny and suddenly she couldn't recall the title of a single one.  Kyoko could see her eyes darting around the room, thinking furiously.  Her cheeks were turning red.

"Um ... it was, it was called ..." her eyes fell on Kyoko's computer terminal, "Computer terminal ... diagnostics about ... diagnostics for ... computers?" the last came out as a question.

Kyoko put her arm around the young girl. It was a calm and gentle motion, meant to be reassuring. She looked down at Lei.

"I'm not angry that you're late, Lei. And it's not very lady-like to lie. You don't have to tell me where you were. Just, next time, try and tell me you will be late. It's polite and doesn't keep me waiting."

Kyoko smiled at the girl, despite her many misgivings with some of the crew, Kyoko did care about them all, well, Dake was questionable, but then, he hadn't exactly been here that long...

Lei's eyes became as wide as saucers when Kyoko lightly berated her for lying.  Lei was a smart girl but she was still a child in many ways and her slightly guilty look was that donned by kids all around the 'verse when they were caught in a lie.  Luckily Lei's was a harmless one.

"Sorry ..." she mumbled quietly and allowed Kyoko to usher her into the room and towards the terminal where she normally did her lessons.

Kyoko nodded to Lei.

"Apology accepted."

She watched as Lei flicked on the terminal. Kyoko had set up a learning program that involved more complex math and science. She hoped this would actually challenge Lei a bit, because it had given Kyoko more than her fair share of mental fits trying to understand it when she had been required to learn it.

Kyoko wondered just what she was going to do when Lei aced her way through the extent of Kyoko's education...that was going to be an interesting day...

Wei-Li paused at the door to Kyoko's shuttle, allowing herself to catch her breath.  It wouldn't do to be a bad example... at least not in Kyoko's domain.

Once she drew a deep breath, she knocked on the hatch door.

Re: Message

Kyoko's eyes opened at Wei-Li's knock.

She'd been sitting in front of a small table that had an ornate mirror, various incenses lit, and several perfume and makeup bottles neatly organized. She'd been meditating. What was interesting was what Kyoko was meditating upon. Mainly what hair style she thought would look best for the next round of clients. But there had also been makeup pairings thrown in there for good measure. Kyoko did this often when Lei was studying as it was a quiet thing to do that would easily allow her to supervise the young girl...who was rapidly flying through a standard grade school curriculum. At this rate, Kyoko was going to have to start throwing advanced college courses at Lei.

For some reason, the companion doubted the petite girl would have trouble with that.

Kyoko exhaled softly, rising to her feet and gracefully moving over to the hatch. She looked back at Lei. "Stay focused on your studies. You still have an hour left." She opened the hatch to see Wei-Li standing there. Her eyebrow quirked, but she gestured for the woman to enter."Hi. How can I be of assistance?"

Wei-Li practically beamed with joy, and impish smile on her face.  Geoff might be totally confusing her at this point-- but there was no way she was going to let that dampen her spirit when it came to Charlie and Rhaef getting to spend some time together.

"Rhaef has asked Charlie out... nothing too... anything but... "

She smiled and looked towards the engine room.  "She's washing up now... and we were wondering if you could help her with her hair..."

Wei-Li bit her lip, giving Kyoko a hopeful look.  Her own primping experience was more oriented towards either being on stage performing or trying to blend in to the point of not being noticed... and while she had outfits that would look good on Charlie-- when it came to hair and such, Kyoko was a far better choice.

Kyoko's eyes took a certain shine to them as soon as Wei-Li mentioned a makeover. She smiled sweetly. "Of course, I'd be more than happy to help. I've been incredibly ready for something like this." In truth, Kyoko was happy to have someone else to doll up. She'd done far too much of it recently.

It'd be good practice.

Kyoko looked around as another thought registered. "Um...where is our dear Charlie?" It would be very hard to have a makeover without the makeover-ee.

<From Destiny: Cargo Bay via the Bathroom>

"Ah'm righ'here." Charlie said, entering the shuttle, her damp hair still up in a towel from taking a quick shower to get all the grime and grease off.  Usually a futile effort as she was typically covered in it again within minutes.  This time, however, she was going to take careful measures not to.

"Wei-Li, tell ya?  Cap'n says'ah'm 'llowed ta go with Rhaef on'is recon so we're makin'a date'o'it.  'Course ah'ain't been'n nothin'so fancy as'a date'n ah'dunno how long.  Ah'm feelin'ah'wanna get this righ' though.  Who knows'ow long 'til we get'a go'on one'gain." Charlie smiled sheepishly with a little shrug.  Aside from Lei, Charlie was sure she was the most naive one here when it came to prettying up.  Living in a house full of brothers hadn't helped one wit in making her ladylike and most of the time she couldn't care less.

In fact, she wasn't sure why she cared so much now.  Rhaef had seen her traipsing about in grease stained coveralls for years now and he somehow had come to like her anyway.  It was silly, Charlie knew, but for once she wanted him to see her like a real woman.

Kyoko, in typical fashion, shushed Charlie and winked at her. "My dear, you should embrace every chance to doll yourself up. Especially with structure such as yours." Kyoko ushered Charlie over to makeup table she'd just left, nodding for Wei-Li to follow. "So what were you thinking? Did you want to catch everyone's attention? Something loud and dramatic? Or were you thinking more demure and subtle?"

Wei-Li hesitated for a moment-- she still wanted to have a serious heart to heart with Geoff, but she also wanted to wait.

She paused, then winked.  "I'll be right back," she said as she thought of the perfect outfit for Charlie, something that was both comfortable and had just a little classy slink to it.

Charlie found herself being ushered over to a petite table covered in delicate little containers, most of which Charlie had no idea what they were used for.  Charlie had worn lipstick once at her brothers' wedding and had ended up wiping if off by the end of the event because her brothers wouldn't stop making fun of her for it.  She laughed as Kyoko began listing off certain 'looks' she could help create.

"Ah'm jus'goin' on'a date.  Nothin'ta fancy or'ah wouldn'know what'a do wi'm'self."

Kyoko sighed. Of course Charlie wouldn't want anything complicated. Which was such a damn shame because the woman would look so amazing. Kyoko pursed her lips for a moment before grabbed what she felt was the necessary makeup. And she got to work.

It didn't take overly long, given Charlie's plea for simplicity. The perfect lipstick, concealer, blush, eye shadow. Kyoko sighed as she wrapped up. She wanted to do more, but she was going to show some restraint, for Charlie's sake.

Still, Charlie looked like a new woman. Kyoko stood back, admiring her handiwork, waiting for Wei-Li to come back so she could hear praise about the job she'd just done.

Wei-Li paused at the hatchway to catch her breath.  She knew it wasn't lady-like to run-- then again it wasn't lady-like to bounce off of walls or swing from loading equipment, but for Kyoko she at least tried to behave.

She ducked her head into the hatchway and saw that Kyoko was just finishing up. "Is it safe?" she called gently teasing as she entered carrying several outfits for Charlie to try.

Re: Message

Charlie blinked a few times at her reflection in the mirror.  Looking back at her was a clear faced woman, no grease spots or dirt or anything, with large dark brown eyes and long lashes.  Her cheeks had a soft glow to them, as did her lips. Charlie had never seen herself like this before and yet somehow it did still look like her.

"Oh geez, ah'ma ..." she blinked again and leaned in towards the mirror and laughed just a little, "Ah'm not even knowin'wha'ta say.  Ah'mean, who knew this'was under'all tha'grease'n stuff?"

Kyoko had been wanting to do a makeover on Charlie for years now and here she was, "Ah'don even have my'hair done'r fancy clothes on'r'nothin' an'ah'm already feelin'like a princess."

She was also feeling a little nervous.  Charlie always tried to blend into the background, she just didn't see how she was going to do that now.

Hearing no screams of fear, shock or murder... Wei-Li entered and then froze when she saw Charlie.  Her eyes lit up and her ready smile widened until it looked like she was going to burst.

She'd known Charlie was beautiful and she knew Kyoko knew her way around make-up but this was... the perfect combination of enhancing Charlie's natural beauty without looking like she's had a face painted on her.

Lei sheepishly looked up from her lessons. She was attempting to heed Kyoko's command to stay focused on her studies, only occasionally peeking to see what they were doing to Charlie. When Charlie addressed her directly, Lei blushed, but turned around fully.

She paused for a moment, her mind processing that it was in fact Charlie, although the woman looked completely different. The diminutive girl smiled her approval, then walked over to Wei-Li, sifting through the dresses the woman held. She stopped at a crimson colored number. "This one. You should wear this one."

Re: Message

Charlie beamed at the young girl as she took the crimson dress that Lei had pulled out from Wei-Li's things.  She held it up, studying the folds of fabric.  Although the color was far more outrageous then anything Charlie had worn before the dress itself was simple enough - and the color made her think of the vibrant streets of Paquin where Wei-Li hailed from and possibly Charlie's favorite planet to visit, so there was that.

She pressed the dress up against her body and looked into Kyoko's mirror.  It would cling tightly to her top but the neckline wasn't too low and the bottom flowed away from the waist to about the knee.  It probably fell just a tiny bit shorter on Wei-Li who was just about an inch taller then Charlie but otherwise they were almost the same build.  Charlie was glad that Wei-Li was there because nothing of Kyoko's would have fit her, what with her long legs and womanly curves.

"Ah think this's a good choice, Lei." she ruffled the other girls hair and looked to Wei-Li and Kyoko, "Thank'ya'll."

The next twenty minutes consisted of Charlie getting her hair dried and curled loosely around her shoulders - which was all sorts of strange for Charlie who almost never wore her hair down, and slipping into the crimson dress which did end up fitting her perfectly.  Soon enough she was dressed and ready to meet up with Rhaef for their outing.

"Well, this's it.  Ah'know it's silly'n'all ... but'ah'm kinda nervous."  she shrugged her shoulders, "Ah'mean, ah'know it's jus'Rhaef'n we'been knowin'chother a long time now ... but this's different. y'know?"

Wei-Li's eyes twinkled when she saw the dress on Charlie.  She had to admit she'd had her doubts, mostly because of the color, but Lei was right, it was a good color for the woman.

She nodded her approval and then thought about Charlie's footware.  She tilted her head.  "If you'd like-- I have a pair of dance shoes... they're almost like going barefoot, only dressier... "

Without further adieu, she headed back to her quarters to retrieve said shoes.

"Well, s'pose there's nothin'lef't do now but go'an meet'im." Charlie took one last look in the mirror and her drastically changed reflection.  A fairy princess, that's what she looked like.  Her brothers would laugh but her Mama would have been proud and her little sisters would have danced around begging to have a pretty dress too.  She could practically see them all.  Of course, the image was all wrong.  Her sisters weren't all that young anymore and none of her brothers lived at home.  But that was how she remembered them right now.  They were pretty pictures from her past.

She looked to the door then and thought about Rhaef.  With his strong shoulders and steady gaze, and that little half smile he wore only for her.  Her picture of him was so much clearer and vibrant and full of hope for the future.  Who would have guessed that out in the black she'd find someone that she'd grow to love?  Even if it so often brought tears as well the good times always made up for it.

"Here goes." she said and stepped out of the shuttle.

As soon as the mechanic left Kyoko's shuttle, the companion's gaze fell back to Lei. "Ahem…you still have half an hour to go, back to your studies, please." Wei-Li smiled and bowed courteously, her eyes twinkling.  "Somehow," she began.  "I doubt my idea of meditation would be conducive to either yours or Lei's studies."

She meant it.  Hanging from rafters and or swinging from ropes, or walking across them were not really anybody other than an acrobat's idea of meditation.  Part of her wanted to go and talk to Geoff, but another part wanted to find her center-- and if her center was over the middle of the cargo bay-- so be it.

"Thank you, both," she added to include Lei in her gratitude.  "Charlie is indeed, stunning... and you were able to bring that out of her in ways I never could."

She was happy for Charlie and Rhaef.  If anyone deserved a break around here-- it was those two.  She bowed and took her leave.
