Re: Destiny- Dining Hall

Dake was horrified to realize he only recognized about every third word of what she said.    It wasn't the vodka at all.  She is speaking a different language.

"What language do you speak?  I am having a heck of a time understanding your accent.  Is that German?  I heard the German racing teams outta Whitefall are dynomite."

"Yeah, nah, I...nah, s'jus..."  Charlie muttered off as she looked down, embarrassed by what Dake said.  Of coure he couldn't understand her, no one could...well, okay, those who had been stuck in a ship with her had, and then a few outside of that.  "Don'cha, y'know...ah...ya, le's jus' go on'n get sumthin' t'eat, kay?"  She sat down next to Kale quickly, turning a bit red in the cheeks but making no show of hiding it, as if she were just going to ignore it.

"Cap'n, so..."  She cleared her throat a bit, unconsciously speaking a little slower as if she had to make sure she was understood.  "How long're we stayin' here, 'fore we gets 'ta goin' back ta...y'know, wh'ver we're goin?"

Wei-Li entered the dining hall and noticed that everyone was already seated.   She gave them a sheepish shrug and started to sit down.

"Sorry."

She paused when she realized that Geoff wasn't there.  "Geoff not coming?"

Re: Destiny- Dining Hall

Dake was just about to push Charlie on what language she spoke when Wei-Li came back into the room.   She made him stop and stare.   She had changed clothes and let her hair down.     Ai ya!  She put the racing models to shame.  I am going to have to get onto this crew just to find out more about her.      Dake realized he was staring and dropped his eyes.        Yeah, even if I wanted to get on with this crew, Kale wouldn't want me here.  It is obvious he isn't comfortable with me around.

He turned back to Kale, "So how did all your meet up?  How long have you been flying together?"

Re: Destiny- Dining Hall

Kale looked up as Wei-Li came into the room, "Not rightly sure where the boys run off ta." he said, looking around.  Last he'd seen him, Geoff had been sitting right here in the dining hall, his brow furrowed slightly that he was missing.  The past month had been a rocky one and although Geoff claimed to have sworn off drinking Kale couldn't help but wonder if that was where he had snuck off to.  He would have thought more on the matter but Kyoko and Lei had just piled the food on the table and a good meal was something worth being distracted by.

He started shoveling food onto his plate as he spoke, "Geoff and I loaded the bay last night with medical supplies Acacia helped us appropriate at a decent price - will fetch a pretty penny out on the rim.  I'm thinking Haven, Rhaef's got..." Kale trailed off, "- we got friends there." he corrected himself.  It had been nearly two months and Kale still slipped up sometimes.  Ai ya, last thing you need to be addin' to yer thoughts is Rhaef.  As if Nate ain't enough regrets ta be thinkin' about. Kale took a bite and looked down at his food and then back up, pushing the thoughts to the back of his mind, "We ain't in no hurry though, probably lift off in a day or two."

He purposely ignored Dake's question, business was something he could handle right now - small talk ... not so much.  Besides, he was sure what Dake was really asking was why Kale never came back to Santo after the war.

Connor looked around the table, before taking a bite. The food was good, and Connor was relaxed...and yet, he still couldn't figure out what exactly was the deal between Kale and their guest...Connor shrugged, it wasn't any of his concern anyways...

"Day'r two, right...tha's all sorts'f unspecified'n knowledge, y'know..."  Charlie spoke to herself, looking back towards the center of the table.  He was obviously distracted, not quite performing at his game level...this Dake had him all sorts of tripped up.  Of course, she wasn't willing to use more than a few words in front of the stranger, less he would point out another of her shortcomings...

Re: Destiny- Dining Hall

After helping Kyoko place the food on the table and get everyone plates Lei slipped into a chair beside Dake.  She folded her legs up beneath her and waited patiently for the rest of the crew to finish filling their plates, she glanced sidelong at Dake every so often and then to the Captain.  Dake made the Captain nervous and that was unusual - but Lei was pretty sure Dake wasn't dangerous or anything.  And Lei liked his stories, the Captain didn't talk about his past very often, but Lei (being the curious girl that she was) always liked learning something new.

Lei didn't realize she was staring at Dake until he turned and smiled at her and offered her the plate of food he'd been preparing presumably for himself, "Oh.  Thank you." Lei said with a smile.

Wei-Li's shoulders sagged slightly at the news about Geoff but she wasn't sure what to do anymore.  He's used up most of her sympathy and was quickly heading towards annoying.

She took a bight of her food, her mood brightning.  "Conner and I just patched the worst of the webbing, though we're going to need more patch soon."

Re: Destiny- Dining Hall

His question didn't get answered, but he didn't mind.  He was watching them start to talk like a crew, and it was obvious they had worked together a long time.  Even under the strained conditions his presence caused, they fell into their own routines when the talk turned to business.

It feels like the racing team.  It is so drilled, they can't help but fall into their roles.  The thoughts about racing pulled at his heart.  He still missed it.      There was so much I wish I could do different.

Before his thoughts turned too depressing, he decided to get involved with the food.  It smelled fantastic.  He grabbed the food and passed it to Lei.  Her thank you and smile was infectious.  He smiled back.  "You are welcome."

He was content to eat and listen to those around him.  Drawing from the good feelings they brought out of him.

I could get used to this.    He glanced again at Wei-Li.    Real used to it.

Re: Destiny- Dining Hall

Kale looked up at Wei-Li and nodded his head, "Well, we get more patch when we get more money.  We get more money once we can fly off this rock." Kale swallowed, "Gotta find us a decent pilot fer that ..." he said softly.  Ren's death was still far too fresh in all of their minds and the thought of having to replace him ... well, it didn't sit too well with Kale.  He'd been putting off looking around for days now.  In fact, Charlie was right to be questioning when they were leaving.  This was the longest Kale had ever had them sit on a core world, he normally avoided them like the plague.  But he just hadn't had the heart to go about interviewing new folk.  He started doing that he'd have to really start facing the fact that Ren was gone and he wasn't comin' back.

DC was had only half heard Kale because he was busy eating and passing food.

With his mouth half full, he blurted out, ”Well, it can’t be too hard to replace your last pilot.  It doesn't take much skill to keep these ships in the air.  They pretty much fly themselves once you get in the air.  You just gotta find someone who can get you up and down without crashing.   There gotta be a ton of pilots on the docks who are willing.   Where have you advertised?”

Re: Destiny- Dining Hall

Kale shot a look in Dake's direction as the boy started yammering on about how easy replacing Ren should be.  He knew there was no way for him to know what all he and his crew had been through and just what the loss of Ren meant to them, but he still felt anger seeping up inside of him.  There was a long awkward silence as Kale glanced at the other members of his crew present - it was obvious Dake had touched a nerve.  Then Kale returned his gaze to Dake before going back to eating his food.

"Haven't advertised." he said shortly.

Re: Destiny- Dining Hall

Lei looked down at her food as the dining hall went silent.  Ren was still a very sore topic for everyone on the ship.  Most of them didn't like talking about him at all.  Lei didn't really understand the grieving process - when the other kids had died in the white place no one had cried.  No one had gotten upset.  Lei felt bad for Dake, this dinner didn't seem to be going very well for him.  Her fork made trails in her meal as she waited for the conversation to start up again.

DC stopped chewing for a moment when the silence descended.  When he looked around, no one was looking at him and Lei was doing her best to draw a picture in her food.   Ai ya.  Do you know how to win friends and influence people, or what?  Don't know what the hell you said, but it was the wrong thing.  You had better stick to someone with your own mentality.  Talk to the kid, ya dolt.

He leaned over to her and whispered, "What?  You don't like your own cookin?  or are you trying to create a master piece?"

Lei was slightly startled as Dake leaned in next to her and started speaking - pulling her out of her own thoughts.  She turned to look up at him silently, her eyes searching his face, deciding whether he was criticizing her or attempting a joke.  The arch of his brow and twinkle in his eye definitely pointed towards the latter.  She looked back down at her food and then up at Dake, a small smile crossing her lips, "Can you make a masterpiece out of food?" she asked, wrinkling her nose, "It'd get all moldly after a little while."

She was a cute kid, and the only one in the room not ready to lynch him.  That tiny smile of hers spoke volumes, and he couldn't help but smile back.  "Well, I must admit, my mom always said that food was for eating, but after seeing your talent for edible art.  I don't think you should eat again.  It would be a tragedy for the art community."

He winked just to make sure she knew he was joking.

Re: Destiny- Dining Hall

[From Destiny: Geoff’s Bunk]

Somewhat angry over his almost-lapse from self-imposed prohibition and also that it was only an “almost,” Geoff’s mood had declined. Then he saw the Vodka. Then he saw the Scotch. Then he saw the used shot glass in front of the man Kale had apparently invited over. Then he saw that the man was smiling and leaning over to talk to Lei. It did nothing to improve his mood. He walked to a free seat, grabbed a plate and started loading up on food.

“Yer all so quiet. Din’t hear ya start eatin’.”

He hadn’t realized he had spent so much time in his bunk and missed the start of the meal. Not that he was complaining about that, he was glad to have missed what had probably been awkward table small talk. He looked over at Kyoko and tried smiling.

“Regrettin’ turnin’ my help down? Don’t worry yerself none, smells good anyhow.”

He kept his gaze away from the liquor and the stranger. No need to try and annoy himself.

Connor raised an eyebrow as Geoff walked into the room. Though, he couldn't deny it was good to see the man moving and joining a crew meal. Things had been awfully quiet lately, everyone predisposed to silence these days. Connor looked to Kale.

"Captain, could I have a word with you after the meal?"

Before Lei could answer, a huge man walked into the room and drew everyone's attention.  DC didn't know who he was, but he had obviously woke up on the wrong side of the bunk.

He leaned over to Lei and whispered louder then he intended, "Who's that?  He wakes up a grumpy gus, doesn't he?"

Lei looked up as Geoff walked in the room, he seemed upset about something and that was a mild cause for alarm for Lei - when Geoff got upset he went straight for the alcohol and even though he had promised her to stop Lei was rapidly learning the concept of lying.  She looked back at Dake with a confused expression as he whispered in her ear, "Who's Gus?"

She took another bite and nodded.  "Kyoko, Lei, you two have outdone youreselves."

"Grumpy gus.  You know, someone who has a foul temper when they first wake up.  A non-morning person.  A person who is unlivable in the morning."

Not sure he was making any sense to her, he paused to think.  That's when he noticed the silence.  It wasn't only Lei who was quiet.  In a matter of minutes, he had silenced the room twice.  That can't be good.

Ya dumb hun dun.  When will you figure out when to keep your mouth shut.  Even an idiot would have figure that out by now.  You on the other hand, have to have it drilled into your head every day.
