Well it makes Elderon feel slightly better Kiley but you are different and should give it a go yourself.  I wonder if we could make a thief proof coat out of his hide?  If he doesn't get better I mean.

"Bad dog!  I impugn you!  Hah, I impugn you again!"

If you want it to be fun, you need to describe how you strike it with impunity.  :P

GNOLLSBANE FINDING DESTINY

To summarize our currently stated actions:

Kiley is attacking the chain devil
Calen is attacking the Lost God
Auto, wounded by the godling's arrow, is under cover
Icy, not wounded by the godling's arrow, is under cover
Kribli is dancing about under some spell or such
Elderon is thinking about a protection from evil he will need to cast in a few rounds

Does that about cover it?

What happened to Be Like Han??? Icy, with a chain devil in his face and the Sun Blade in his hands, ducks down, leaving Elderon to face the devil. How about a lightning bolt? Fire ball?

Sorry to vent, but this isn't us acting in a manner that resolves this combat quickly.

Rough numbers I think we have put at least 225 HP of damage on him.  We are at a serious disadvantage while this guy's off the ground.  But if we can pour it on for just a little longer, any damage will help.

Calen has no magic that will damage/slow/distract him. My next move is nearly suicidal if necessary.

Point taken Kiley, but don't overlook public posts are often accompanied with private sections needing feedback.  With WG so busy feedback takes longer.

A fireball is a pointless action they are devils and immune to flames, and a lightning bolt would be awesome, if it was currently a spell that Elderon had available to cast.  Spells cast against the devils themselves especially Trimhalghu stand a good chance of failure which is a wasted round and possibly a life lost.  Spells to protect us so we can all use our special abilities have no chance of failure so possibly better and I'm pretty sure the PFE is what has kept us all alive so far.  We'll see when Trimhalghu closes with Calen.

If you are going to commit suicide Calen make sure it is sufficient to prevent Elderon needing to commit martyrdom please.  At least he can always bring you back to life but Elderon's martyrdom will be a sphere of total destruction for any character close.

I didn't think we were quite there yet, and will let you know when its time to get the hell away from him if a decision is made. :-)

GNOLLSBANE FINDING DESTINY

Icylius is at his best in melee but that option didn't occur until this round (with the chain devil) but he hasn't been slacking, his actions focused on buffing the group, which benefits everyone. With the avatar floating in mid-air above a bottomless pit that left melee fighters limited options

Pre-fight: +2 to hit bonus for EVERYONE (which appears to account for about 60hp of Calen's damage)

Round 1:   Give +3/+6 level boost to Elderon/Kribli/Kiley among others = lowering avatars MR by -15/30% and allowing up to 12HD of extra damage each round depending on spell

Round 2:   Javelin hit for 16HP

Round 3:   Another d6+11 Javelin hit

Round 4:   Slowed so limited actions but suggested Haste so we weren't acting every other round

Round 5:   Freed 3 party members from domination, returning them to the fight and reducing attacks on the rest of us (unless someone wants to suffer a backstab from Auto or Kribli or grapple from Pit)

Round 6:   First possible round for melee... Hmmm... waiting on an answer from WG on Tempus Fugit to buy the party a free 6 Rounds of action? Doesn't sound like a bad idea for the party to get that! Otherwise Hasting for melee... both of which are worth the round for the improved actions for the party or himself.
And I'm not sure if the chain devil is within reach or is using an extended/ranged attack while hovering above the pit but he'll deal with it if need be (or Pit will), otherwise moving to deal with the avatar up close (and serving as a meat-shield for others against a god who can likely dish out a 100 or so HP of damage in a single round if the last avatar is any indicator)

So, yes, Icylius is up for melee but his choices are made with improving the situation for everyone until he could enter melee. His actions just might not always be apparent as I prefer to avoid describing actions in OOC terms or an obvious manner for subtle things, usually saving that for PM's to WG who can post a description as he sees fit

While this combat has been particularly frustrating, I have to agree w/ the male characters - they've pretty much held up their end of the bargain.

Except for Auto, whose busy scragging around per usual.

As for Kribli, she got a backstab on Auto...so she's got that going for her.  I suspect Auto's home town will erect a statue in her honor...

Yadda, yadda, yadda...

Protection from Evil hasn't stopped crap. It didn't stop three Dominion arrows nor did it stop three black broadheads, it hasn't protected Kribli from the Lost God nor did it stop Pit from attacking me and Calen. It does seem to be having an effect on the chain devil and that's great.

Would I love to have six rounds of actions? You betchya.

Sure, Icy, your bard songs have been effective and I appreciate them. Just drives me crazy when the person with the greatest melee bonuses (via the girdle of giant strength) and the best weapon we own (the Sun Blade) chooses to NOT engage in melee. You could chant all day long, if Auto had the girdle and was tossing boulders. He has no attack mode for distance. Poorly assigned magic.

As of now, Elderon is attacking with magic missiles (yeah!) but the devil in his face is real. Let's finish this.

GNOLLSBANE FINDING DESTINY

As Elderon said, don't assume that decisions are made without consulting WG through PMs...

   - Auto could have thrown boulders all day with the girdle and it wouldn't have done anything. I know because I've already consulted with WG on this - we need magic to hit the avatar so unless you know of some enchanted boulders lying around that idea is a no go.

---------------------------------------------

   - Kiley, a glance at Elderon's spell list makes it clear that he doesn't have the blaster spells your recommending aside from a few fire spells he doesn't want to waste on what he's deeming to be a devil-god (as devil's are immune to fire). That leaves him with MM's for now. Elderon's never been a blaster as it doesn't fit his character concept but that doesn't mean he hasn't been useful as there are other ways to play a spell-caster

Indirect actions and group effects make a HUGE difference on the battlefield - if he had not cancelled the Slow spell our damage output would be cut in half, his action making the difference of around a 100HP of damage.
And at some point that PFE bonus to our saves could mean the difference between someones life and death.

In addition he spent 2 out of 5 rounds struggling against Domination (which his PFE could have made a difference towards - unless you were looking to see a fourth member of the party turned against us... and we aren't immune to his fireballs) or losing a spell to a Dominated Auto.

His spells are mainly utility, healing and buffs so he's doing what he can to help out and I think we should appreciate that.

--------------------------------------------------

   - Trust me, I'd love to melee. I'm not ignoring it (remember, Icylius has meleed with every major baddie this game, without magical weapons and on one occasion with his bare fists) but in every round I weigh my decisions towards what's going to have the most impact.

Yes, I could have thrown a magical javelin every round but I decided that freeing Auto, Kribli, and Pit was worth the sacrifice of 1d6+11 damage so they could add their strength to the battle and not disrupt our own spells/missiles with their attacks. Plus I'm sure the players can appreciate being in control of their characters again.

I also felt the 1d6+11 was worth sacrificing to allow our primary spellcasters a better chance at overcoming MR (both avatar and chain devils), increasing damage, and making their spells harder to dispel or improving our own dispels.

These decisions aren't easy, to attack or create a situation that can significantly improve the party's success (at least 60HP of damage from his buffs;  affecting damage done to us (which disrupt our spells/attacks) and by us from PCs turned NPC;  and possibly affecting the outcome of spells such as your Chromatic Gem spell that ashed one chain devil, for example).

Yes, right now I could melee but this is possibly the last round Icylius will have to grant the party 6 extra rounds of action (as it will prove useless once the avatar enters the spells AoE) so I'm taking it instead of swinging a sword because the impact of those extra rounds will be make a huge difference.
And if WG's response means I end up using a Potion of Speed/Haste instead, trust me, it's going to make a HUGE difference in damage output for him. One round translates to 3 extra attacks each round afterwards, which is a big deal.

Plus, as only Kribli and Icylius know, the avatar doles out 25-30hp of damage a blow that can also cause loss of limb or instant death, with 3 or 4 attacks a round so the better prepared melee fighters are before engaging in melee the better.

On top of that it's been impossible for Icylius to engage in melee until Round 6 - there wasn't anything he or anyone else seemed to be able to do about that.

---------------------------------------------

I think we should focus on appreciating each others efforts and work to support each other, verbally and tactically. We're going to need it, especially in this battle.

GNOLLSBANE FINDING DESTINY

I don't think anyone needs to justify the way they're roleplaying.  Frankly, this deity learned from his last attempt to push through to this plane, and as such, the DM is playing him from that perspective.

It has been frustrating, but not because of the party, rather because I wasted a couple of spells early that might come in handy now - furthermore, the spells I had left were nullified by the deity's MR.

Shit happens, if y'all will excuse my French.  Keep rolling - if nothing else, Kribli can be a target while the others are free to keep firing everything AND the kitchen sink at the son of a bitch (literally).

Cheers!

Your moment will be here soon Auto.  Will he be able to effectively melee from the air?  Possibly not with thrusts, swings and counter thrusts.  He needs counter balance unless after being alive for millennium he's learnt how to do that in flight. :-).  What are you like at jumping?
