GNOLLSBANE FINDING DESTINY
As Elderon said, don't assume that decisions are made without consulting WG through PMs...
- Auto could have thrown boulders all day with the girdle and it wouldn't have done anything. I know because I've already consulted with WG on this - we need magic to hit the avatar so unless you know of some enchanted boulders lying around that idea is a no go.

- Kiley, a glance at Elderon's spell list makes it clear that he doesn't have the blaster spells your recommending aside from a few fire spells he doesn't want to waste on what he's deeming to be a devil-god (as devil's are immune to fire). That leaves him with MM's for now. Elderon's never been a blaster as it doesn't fit his character concept but that doesn't mean he hasn't been useful as there are other ways to play a spell-caster
Indirect actions and group effects make a HUGE difference on the battlefield - if he had not cancelled the Slow spell our damage output would be cut in half, his action making the difference of around a 100HP of damage.
And at some point that PFE bonus to our saves could mean the difference between someones life and death.
In addition he spent 2 out of 5 rounds struggling against Domination (which his PFE could have made a difference towards - unless you were looking to see a fourth member of the party turned against us... and we aren't immune to his fireballs) or losing a spell to a Dominated Auto.
His spells are mainly utility, healing and buffs so he's doing what he can to help out and I think we should appreciate that.
--------------------------------------------------
- Trust me, I'd love to melee. I'm not ignoring it (remember, Icylius has meleed with every major baddie this game, without magical weapons and on one occasion with his bare fists) but in every round I weigh my decisions towards what's going to have the most impact.
Yes, I could have thrown a magical javelin every round but I decided that freeing Auto, Kribli, and Pit was worth the sacrifice of 1d6+11 damage so they could add their strength to the battle and not disrupt our own spells/missiles with their attacks. Plus I'm sure the players can appreciate being in control of their characters again.
I also felt the 1d6+11 was worth sacrificing to allow our primary spellcasters a better chance at overcoming MR (both avatar and chain devils), increasing damage, and making their spells harder to dispel or improving our own dispels.
These decisions aren't easy, to attack or create a situation that can significantly improve the party's success (at least 60HP of damage from his buffs; affecting damage done to us (which disrupt our spells/attacks) and by us from PCs turned NPC; and possibly affecting the outcome of spells such as your Chromatic Gem spell that ashed one chain devil, for example).
Yes, right now I could melee but this is possibly the last round Icylius will have to grant the party 6 extra rounds of action (as it will prove useless once the avatar enters the spells AoE) so I'm taking it instead of swinging a sword because the impact of those extra rounds will be make a huge difference.
And if WG's response means I end up using a Potion of Speed/Haste instead, trust me, it's going to make a HUGE difference in damage output for him. One round translates to 3 extra attacks each round afterwards, which is a big deal.
Plus, as only Kribli and Icylius know, the avatar doles out 25-30hp of damage a blow that can also cause loss of limb or instant death, with 3 or 4 attacks a round so the better prepared melee fighters are before engaging in melee the better.
On top of that it's been impossible for Icylius to engage in melee until Round 6 - there wasn't anything he or anyone else seemed to be able to do about that.
---------------------------------------------
I think we should focus on appreciating each others efforts and work to support each other, verbally and tactically. We're going to need it, especially in this battle.
