Another one.
Hello everyone.
I'm Lumehn, a lover of prose and everything else as a matter of fact.
Decided to join RPOL after taking a look at our mature games section and finding that there are very few new ones that people can jump into now.

I'll play/GM pretty much anything, but I tend to stray away from adult games. Just not my cup of tea. I post a lot and post frequently. I think thats a good trait, lol.

I also really do like to lurk other people's games, but I'm never playing/GMing more than one game at a time. Can't spread my love around equally, you know?

I really like playing/GMing games with high levels of character interactions. Thats my thing.

I'm pretty generally rad. Rmail me sometime if you wish.

Good to have you, Lumehn!  I admire your self-control in limiting yourself to one game at a time.  =)

In reply to Lumehn (msg # 1):

Welcome to RPoL, and Happy New Year!

Hey, just so you know, not every Adult game goes all sexy-party.  Sometimes the GM just wants the latitude for adults to be adults.

That said, the choice to play in adult games or not is a personal one, and I'm not downin' ya for it, just wanted to let you know you may be excluding some good games from contention for what might be the wrong reason.

There ought to be plenty to see and do around here, and, if you do decide to GM, you'll find one of the best toolkits around for play-by-post.

Mad Mick is onto something:  it will take truly admirable self-restraint to only play/GM one game at a time.  Don't feel like you're obligated on that score. Have fun!

Another one.
Honestly, thats not even the reason I don't typically like adult games, but it is a part of it.
The reason why I don't typically play adult games is a bit complicated but I'll try to be brief, lol.

The entire environment of an adult game is different, people are aware that they can really stretch the content of their posts into really niche areas, which isn't inherently bad, I'm not saying it is, but since adult games allow the possibility to REALLY STRETCH into violent or otherwise graphic content, the entire scene, the feel is different.

Even the RTJs in adult games tend to ask for stuff that really, imo, are unnecessary. A lot of RTJs I've seen in adult games I lurk in are things like "Kinks" or "Turn Ons" and I feel like this is such a small part of one's personality that they should be treated just like the rest of the quirks of a character, and should be developed and found out by the players THROUGH the story, not just stated outright in the RTJ, especially in a game that is sex-heavy.

Anyway, here's a good example. Let's say I'm a GM and I'm telling a dramatic story. I want my players to feel really uncomfortable for an arc so in my Mature game I start throwing down subtle hints that one of my NPCs is lusting over another. A little minor stalking, a few awkward conversations. I build that tension through characters and make people feel just a little uncomfortable whenever they read his posts.

In an adult game, I could just have him rape her in really graphic detail. And yes, I could get away with a non graphic rape in a mature game, but it wouldn't be through the DESCRIPTION of the rape, but through the description of the events leading up to said rape. The emotions, the emotional dominance, etc. But just the possibility of these very graphic scenes changes the entire nature of the game. Why take the effort and time to make your players uncomfortable when you can just chop off a leg and have a cannibal eat it?

I also like most of my games to be inclusive as possible, and I also can't write a convincing sex scene without sounding fucking terrible lol.

Hope I explained that well. Again, I'm not saying that all adult games are populated by sleezy basement dwelling perverts, although surely some are there, but for the kinds of games I want to play, the classification isn't typically conducive to those kinds of games.

Edit: One more thing is that I feel like many GMs use the adult classification as a precautionary measure just in case their players get graphic, which, I think is kind of just... bad. I feel like you should build a world and concept and maybe a skeletal plot, around the fundamentals of your game, and its age classification is one of them. If you want to GM an adult game, build an adult world, not just any world and allow adult interactions in it, you know? If you want a mature game, build a mature world. If you lose some adult players, fine, thats fine, but your world and lore will be better in BOTH games if you focus your intentions as a GM from the start.

Hello, new RPoL-er! It's rare to see someone restrain themselves to only a few games. It takes a good bit of self control for me to not run dozens, so I can only imagine what it's like for you.

I'm fairly certain that graphic descriptions of rape violate the Adult Games Policy on this site.

You're right, but graphic violence or anything sufficiently squick would work just as well, hah. I think the point I was trying to make still stands, I'm just kinda tired and tried to find the least common denominator, oof

Re: Another one.
Make sure you read through the FAQs in the upper right.  They go through what is and is not allowed in games.  Graphic descriptions of sexual content, torture, and abuse aren't allowed, even in Adult games.

Think of Mature games as PG-13 and Adult games as R.  Mature games still need to be suitable for all ages.

I'll give you two examples from games I play in.  One is focused on training to become battle mages and includes occasional violence and strong language.  It's rated Mature.

Another game is a fantasy game based on D&D modules.  There is often violence, and sex can occur, but when it does, the game doesn't linger on it.  The games that ask for kinks, etc. have sexual content as a primary focus, but that's only one kind of adult game, just as an R-rated movie could have zero nudity or sex.

Re: Another one.
Yeah, I just went and re-read, I was a little mixed up.
It says you can depict violence/crime/torture/etc (but not noncon rape rip) but artistically, games that exist just for those things is not allowed, yeah.

But no, I think even just a depiction of anything squick, even if it isn't graphic (like I said I was just picking something I thought everyone sane is squicked out by hah) is a lot easier than what I tend to see done in mature games was my (poorly conveyed) first point.

Easy, either because I know my limits or I'm an idiot, one of the two, hah.
