...Hmm.

Nobody seems to be getting to it.  I should remember this next time we need to know who counts as "Loyal" to Korentin. mental note

...scratches out mental note; makes actual note in Scratchpad

I think my mental notepad is an Etch-A-Sketch.  Um, anyway.  Mazdor, then, you're certainly free to roll your One Minute Recovery Test!  Even a one will be enough to wake up...

Honestly I'm a bit uncertain what purpose my character is able to do in the current situation.

Re: OOC IV: A New Hope

Oh!  Also, I keep forgetting - but with LP awards up...

I wanted to talk a little bit about Circle Advancement.  Especially as we bring more people in and the group is getting larger, I was thinking it might make sense to... well, I'm having a hard time making sense of the actual training requirement.  Not that it doesn't make sense, but on a meta- level; making sure that you guys meet up with higher Circle Adepts of each of your Disciplines at more or less the same time seems like it may be awkward.

And with everything already running at PbP speeds - anything that just slows us down without especially adding something seems worth reconsidering.

So what I'm thinking about is to just sort of quietly delete the need for an actual trainer, without changing anything else.  Circle Advancement still requires intensified practice-and-meditation over several weeks.  The silver cost would remain, but be `abstracted'; instead of paying someone to teach you, it would represent the costs of participating in and supporting your Discipline.  Tourney fees for a Swordmaster, buying scrolls on current theory for magicians, keeping up with the latest songs for a Troubadour, contributions to the Fraternal Order of Horror Stalkers Widows and Orphans Fund...etc.  Obligations that increase as your Legend grows.  Not `paying' basically implies that you're not connected enough to your Discipline's Great Pattern to grow in it for now.  IC, figure you're setting it aside as you actually advance and then it gets spent over a course of time.

The Training Pledge and Ritual of the Ghost Master would stay intact as alternatives, too.  The Pledge obviously would require finding a Trainer, but basically amounts to a promise to support your Discipline even if you can't afford it right now, so that works.  And Ghost Masters are just cool, and, having their own setup, likewise already replace that cost.  If we ever get that far, I'd seriously consider making them the only way to advance past Tenth Circle.

...Anyway, does this make sense, or does it seem like a bad idea?

So good that I immediately considered stealing it for my own game :)

Oh and thanks for the LP!

Re: OOC IV: A New Hope

Honestly, although I really like it, it cant really be all that hard to find a low-Circle adept of any given Discipline. With the possible exception of a Thief, an that's arguable - if he's low Circle 'cause he sucks, he'll be easier to find than if he's just starting out. It's kinda nice to have the group have to go to civilization once in a while, and once we get to higher Circles, being forced to find talented Adepts (or Ghost Masters) makes for an inherently interesting story line.

Might be harder for me since I'd need to find a sky raider, probably a troll, convince him that I actually am worthy of the training and then wait to recover before undergoing it. ^_^

Re: OOC IV: A New Hope

It's not supposed to be easy. Besides, at First Circle, you only really need to find a Second or Third Circle Sky Raider; it's your own damned fault if you ask Throg the Fiftieth Circle Troll Sky Raider.

In any event, I dont have a problem with Garlen's system - I just happen to really "approve" of the requirements FASA made.

True, and I am still only first circle... Never had the money to rank up. Still don't actually, and the level of destruction the Horror indulged in for giggles suggests I still don't. ^_^

I'm easy, but I'm NOT cheap!  Oh, sorry, wrong thread.  ;)

With so few kaer's open and possibly few people to learn from, it might be a great solution to a very possible quest into itself.  ;)

I'm fine with w/e you decide.

True, one of my primary goals as a GM is to see if I can get Korentin to break Level 3 Legendary Status while still 1st Circle.

Er, wait, did I say that out loud?

Anyway - Drovin, thank you, that was very much the kind of input I was looking for.  If it's going to disturb the feel of it, then it might be a Bad Change.  For instance, I think Korentin's comment about what he has to do for it is part of the character - and I don't know if he'd regret not getting to play that out.

But Mazdor's comment gets at what I'm looking at.  We're, like, super-early in the timeline.  I know we've established in the game that Bartertown is big enough that everybody can go find a Trainer there, especially now.  I think Kratas has had a mention as existing, but I'm thinking it would be fairly small at this point, and probably not really established as "The City of Thieves" yet.  Maybe on the way, but not there.  Urupa is a faint outline of what's-going-to-be a major port.  Iopos is probably pretty solid, but it's also...Iopos.  Vivane should be good, actually - the Therans haven't reclaimed it yet, but it was will be big when they did do, so it's probably a real city now.  Jerris probably isn't established yet; Haven doesn't exist, and Parlainth is still lost and forgotten.  I can certainly imagine there being some other cities currently struggling to grow that aren't going to make it long enough for the 1500-timeline the rulebook is actually set at.

So I think a lot of my thought comes in Mazdor's note that it can become a quest in itself, and Drovin's about it being an interesting storyline on its own.  Quests and storylines take time.  In PbP, they take a lot of time.  And when we have nine characters all looking to go up a Circle, I think we might be defining the game by it.  Is that what we want to spend time on?

...In fairness, it's true that while this would have an impact now (ie., can people start Circling Up now, or do we need to get back to Bartertown first?), it won't be a major factor for a while - like, maybe 2025, if everybody sticks around.  I guess I've just been thinking about stuff, and... and I like consistency.  (One of the things I thought about with this change was whether or not it would-have-meant Korentin would have done things differently before, for instance, which is why I tried to justify keeping the Silver requirement.  Otherwise, that's something that, really, is kind of... a question of economics, I guess.  If we took that out, I'd just adjust how much silver you guys got for stuff, you know?)

Although it does make sense to say that low-Circle Adepts require training; Mid-Circle Adepts require supporting their Discipline (including training lower-Circle Adepts); and higher Circle Adepts need something really special like a Ghost Master or a major show of dedication.  Maybe we should do that.

So which parts of a Horror are non-offending?  So far this has all been right out of the And Stay Down section of the standard Earthdawn Adventurer's Handbook.

...It's in Chapter VII, I think.

I dunno, even before I posted that it occured to me that Horrors and rapists really don't have a whole lot in common once you get passed the "bad in general" part.

Of course, there are some Horrors who like to chuckle while they watch from the Astral Realm as you people waste precious energy and build up your delicious hopes dismembering their latest physical vessel.

Well, chuckle, and position their next wave of minions, I suppose.

Meh... I'm going with the Vorst on this one.
Besides, if it was Astrally based I did cast enough Crushing Will on it to have at least peeved it off.
