Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

So it had come to this. Gladiatorial combat for the entertainment of strangers. Well, it passed the time and earned him some experience as he waited for adventuring opportunities. But for a would-be champion of the dwarven people, it was a little ignoble.

He saluted the elven lass at the far end, raised his axe to his brow. "Good battle, lass, an' good luck to ye."

Then he vanished from sight.

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

Tamarie studies her foe carefully, "Battle with honor but also with joy and laughter in your heart." She considers fighting florentine with wineskin in her offhand but will do that only if the battle gets dull.

Tamarie considers strategy knowing counters to invisibility is one of her limitation. She have to rely on her senses for subtle details and the smell of her mount to sense the approach. Size won't be an issue but the fact that his first blow has advantage is not a pretty thing. She does have a few tricks.

She drinks a potion and then to pass the time as preparation time passes, starts to sing an elvish love song. She continues to sing even as the time to begin arises and she spurs her horse into action cantering forward to get speed to jump the river at the narrowest bridge and then along the edge of the arena to hurry to get close. She is waiting for the illusions and magic to start. She knows only a little of the underdark but invisibility, illusions and trickery is their strength.

Softly Ragnar tiptoed out of the holding area; it wouldn't be wise to get caught in there, but neither did he want to get caught in open ground with a mounted warrior. He had to pick a place to make a stand.

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

The silent motion means that she can't hear where the foe is moving. She didn't expect it of a dwarf, especially one in breastplate but she knows where she wants to be and what she wants to do. She ride forward to position herself for the stand. The horse stops at the right spot and she dismounts. As wartrained to defend rider, the horse automatically prepares to attack the foe it can now smell but isn't sure exact direction.

I know how about how far he could have walked either my horse will attack him as he attacks me or horse is in the way of the charge. The question is which is it so she scans the ground looking for the telltail traces of footsteps in the earth. She continues to sing softly as she really doesn't wnat to ruin the verse of her song by cutting off. She does make a mental note to get caltrops for future battles like this.

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

She was getting closer. Ragnar wondered if she could detect him somehow, but no, she'd know that a dwarf couldn't get far in that time. He also wondered if the horse was snuffling him out; he hated dealing with animals and animal-types; the time he'd blundered into a den of minotaurs still sat sorely with him.

He looked dubiously at the bridge. It would make a good spot for a stand, either on it or on the other side. He tested it with his oversized foot; no, he'd have to inch his way across, harder still when trying to be quiet. Perhaps he should have waited before he made himself big? Oh well.

With a silent oath of Moradin, protector of foolish dwarves, he stepped closer to the elf and her horse.

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

Tamarie smiles as she sees her horses reaction and orders it, "Attack Dolphin" In a quick order, breaking her song. The singing is done for now. "The main reason to bring Dolphin who doesn't fight that well is she has a very good nose" She then waits for Dolphin to do what she can do. The horse carefully sniffs the air and then 5' steps forward towards the strong scent. It rears up and a foot lashes out wide of the mark. Tamarie now knows where the foe is but can't get him yet.

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

Ragnar glared at the horse, and backed away with less care for silence now. He'd been planning on investing in some stink-maskers, or something to foul up a nose, since the minotaur incident, but hadn't yet had the opportunity to get into a town and buy some. He knew the horse would continue to follow him.

Having an idea, he returned his battleaxe to his belt. Sure, he was unarmed, but while he was invisible, he was safe... ish, and had no need to attack. Yet.

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

Tamarie knows her horse had found the foe but the battle is not static so she waits for her horse to show her where to attack again. Dolphin rears and lashes out but no blood falls to the sand and no sounds of pain. Still Tamarie has a place to attack and so she springs forward, her rapier lashing out and then pulls back with blood on the tip.

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

Ragnar decided against hurling his battleaxe; the elf had brought things to a head faster than he'd expected. That strike to his knee had hurt.

He drew the axe again, then stalked past the horse to close in on by the bridge. Once he was within range of the elf, he chopped down hard upon her. She must have heard him approach, or something, for she stepped-aside and the chop missed her completely.

A plus-sized grey dwarf appeared, looming over Tamarie. "Crap."

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

Reach is no advantage when you are next to the horse trying to kick in your brains or your opponent is an agile battle dancer able to spring into action and run circles around an opponent. The horse rears and kicks again while Tamarie circles to the opposite side and the other reason for the horse becomes appearant. It is a distraction and attention splitter. Still Tamarie considers the odds and makes an offer, "Drop the enlarge and I will call off my horse." She is giving up on one of her prime training advantages but it is more honorable.

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

OOC: Yep, got the wrong line...

Does Spring Attack really work that? I never thought of it in a "running circles around your opponent way", I thought the lack of AoO was only for leaving the (threatened) square you attacked from? I just think there ought to be an AoO in there somewhere... Okay, Rules Of The Game confirms it (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20041102a), never mind me then. (Still feels weird.)

Ragnar cursed as he suffered the next strike from the pesky elf as she ran circles around him. The enlarge spell was making him a target, but it wasn't in a duergar's stubborn heart to give up any advantage (no matter how dubious), nor back down, nor fight with honour. "Sorry lass." he growled, his voice deep with his increased size.

He stepped around, taking cover by placing his back to the river's edge, then swung his axe carefully at her. Too bad she was now so short.

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

The horse rears up and tries to beat down the large dwarf but fails to do much harm. Tamarie shakes her head, honorable combat is so much more fun than skewering a giant dwarf but she will deal with what her hand has dealt her. She is cheerful as she start to add some acrobatic twists and turns to her movement, guarding herself even as she swings. She hasn't quite gotten the rhythm of the dwarf yet though as her rapier misses this time. "Hey, I am not the one that has been tested for tenderness twice and kicked once." is said in response to the apology. She is the one with all the benefits of two on one combat.

Tamarie shakes her head, "Brute. Can't hit an elf so you pick on a defenseless horse." Still the druegar's defenses are a bit too hard for her to penetrate and the horse looks like it is hurting. OOC: Yeah, O/P 13/14. I got it mixed up again.

"I wouldnae say that horsey is defenseless - look how it kicked me." Just for good measure, Ragnar smacked it again with his axe. "No hard feelin's, horse." He'd have been bothered by this, but nothing ever truly died in this accursed arena. He just needed to stop it bothering him while the elf attacked.

He shuffled to the side, blocking Tamarie's access to the bridge. Now to work on her.

Re: Tamarie vs Ragnar

Tamarie smiles, "You will see I have a few more tricks than that. First though I have to save my friend." The elf is sentimental about her horse appearantly and she tumbles out of reach to the horse's side and reaches down and touches it as well as the belt at her waist. The horse stablizes though still badly wounded and unconcious. Perhaps nothing truly dies in the arena but it doesn't matter to her. She has to save her trusted steed or she would not be true to herself.
