The little winged creature zooms off to the east, hoping to find the dragon at the northeast corner of the arena.  When Garath sees clearly that the dragon is not there, he loops around to the south, turns the corner on one of the walls, and catches a glimpse of the cloud of fog.  *Ahh, so...* he thinks to himself.

Re: Garath & Quinlan vs. a white (juvenile) dragon

Garath hovers in place, waiting for the dragon to appear - but it does not.  *Is it whirling around within the fog cloud?* he wonders, *or has it left through the far side of the cloud where I could not see it?*

He needed to find some way to communicate properly with his team-mate so that the two of them could pool their observations - without the dragon overhearing.  Swooping southwards, he nervously skirts the eastern edge of the new fog cloud, trying to see if he could locate his comrade.  He does so as he clears the bank of fog, and settles into place not far from the lithe ranger.  With a practiced twist of the hand, he touches a tiny object - the half-drow's keen eyes make it out as a twisted length of copper wire - and chants a short phrase.  A humming rings in both his ears and Quinlan's for a brief moment, then Garath's voice comes over, a little tinnily...

Re: Garath & Quinlan vs. a white (juvenile) dragon

"Dragons," the young wizard remarks in a conversational tone, "are swift flyers, but clumsy ones.  Whereas this form can fly at any angle and any speed or none," - and indeed, the air mephit form that Garath has chosen is the most versatile flyer of all mephits - "our opponent cannot maneuver itself in the air except with the force of momentum buoying its pinions.  Within the web, it cannot generate enough momentum to maintain control of its motion; it is stalled, and should be helplessly caught now in the web."

Garath shifts to a low whisper, one that cannot be heard by Quinlan directly but which comes across clearly through the Message spell.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
'We should wait until the fog clears - and then we will be able to see the dragon and harm it directly.  My web should last longer than the fog.  In the meantime, we should stand to either side of the web and be ready to scorch the dragon if it comes out prematurely, though we should not torch the web itself.  And also...'

The mageling turns to spellcasting, with careful gestures and intricate phrases of incantation.  As soon as he is done...  well, no effect can be seen, except perhaps a slight change in the hue of the fog cloud.  But the dragon can feel the effect - acid in the air, stinging its eyes, rasping at its throat and lungs.

Re: Garath & Quinlan vs. a white (juvenile) dragon

The weasel isn't trying to track (at this stage), simply to detect. There is no roll to be made as far as I can see, unless the caustic smoke is so overpowering that the scent ability becomes useless.

Re: Garath & Quinlan vs. a white (juvenile) dragon

ooc: Are you sending it into the cloud? - The smoke is acidic, as such I say it is within reason to consider the scent ability useless as it burns within the critter's nose.

SRD:
Scent

This extraordinary ability lets a creature detect approaching enemies, sniff out hidden foes, and track by sense of smell.

A creature with the scent ability can detect opponents by sense of smell, generally within 30 feet. If the opponent is upwind, the range is 60 feet. If it is downwind, the range is 15 feet. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at twice the ranges noted above. Overpowering scents, such as skunk musk or troglodyte stench, can be detected at three times these ranges.

The creature detects another creature’s presence but not its specific location. Noting the direction of the scent is a move action. If it moves within 5 feet of the scent’s source, the creature can pinpoint that source.

A creature with the Track feat and the scent ability can follow tracks by smell, making a Wisdom check to find or follow a track. The typical DC for a fresh trail is 10. The DC increases or decreases depending on how strong the quarry’s odor is, the number of creatures, and the age of the trail. For each hour that the trail is cold, the DC increases by 2. The ability otherwise follows the rules for the Track feat. Creatures tracking by scent ignore the effects of surface conditions and poor visibility.

Creatures with the scent ability can identify familiar odors just as humans do familiar sights.

Water, particularly running water, ruins a trail for air-breathing creatures. Water-breathing creatures that have the scent ability, however, can use it in the water easily.

False, powerful odors can easily mask other scents. The presence of such an odor completely spoils the ability to properly detect or identify creatures, and the base Survival DC to track becomes 20 rather than 10.

Well, no. It'll stay clear of the web and the caustic smoke. As I said, it's not an attempt to pinpoint the location, just to see if it's possible to get a positive reading on the presence (and the weasel will stop as soon as it gets a wiff).

OOC: Raven, if you make the call that the caustic smoke ruins the scent ability (a perfectly sensible call) then feel free to act accordingly. The weasel will sniff around his spot waiting for the stingy smoke to lift.

OOC:  Semi-offline for July 4th weekend.  Will aim to post by Tuesday.

Btw I think we're in Round 7 now - the dragon's posts have been undercounting the rounds by 1 each time.  (Not that it makes much of a difference.)

Re: Garath & Quinlan vs. a white (juvenile) dragon

The dragon, oddly, appeared to be moving, judging by the faint noises.  Yet how could this be?  The dragon was suspended in midair, and without the benefit of momentum it could not make any purposeful movement...

*Then it must not have been in midair*, the wizard concludes, *but on the ground, where its powerful claws find purchase against the ground to propel it against the web-strands.*

Satisfied with the logic, the mage shifts position.

OOC:  Just to make sure we have the right grid coords - the top left corner is A1, and there appears to be a big glowing orb at K6.  The reason I mention this is that the dragon appears to have moved through a wall in the most recent round, so we might not be using the same grid system and I wanted to make sure we are coordinated, so to speak :)

Afaik it's Quin's turn now.

Perhaps because of some peculiar acoustic property of the underground fane, Garath finds he can more clearly hear the sound of the dragon's wrestling with the web.

He shifts position again.
