OOC: Sorry it took me so long to post. Work has been hella crazy!

Elidin strode out into the area with Nalia. The Dragon Shaman drew out his crossbow and cranked the handcrank until the string was in place then slid a bolt into place. Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

Nalia took the wand and kept it in her hand while she whispered something back at Elidin. Then she quickly rounded the pillar and activated the amulet that hung from her slender neck. The amber colored stone glowed softly and a few feet away a large scorpion shimmered into being. Immediately its sensitive legs registered the slightest tremor coming from its mistress and her ally, but also of Quinlan. Having picked up the location of its prey the arachnid scuttled off to the right and attacked something invisible behind the pillar there. However, the pincer didn't connect. With Quinlan not moving the arachnid froze in anticipation, waiting for the slightest vibration in the ground.

Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

ooc: It doesn't matter what actions you took or didn't take.

SRD:
Tremorsense

A creature with tremorsense automatically senses the location of anything that is in contact with the ground and within range. Aquatic creatures with tremorsense can also sense the location of creatures moving through water.

If no straight path exists through the ground from the creature to those that it’s sensing, then the range defines the maximum distance of the shortest indirect path. It must itself be in contact with the ground, and the creatures must be moving.

As long as the other creatures are taking physical actions, including casting spells with somatic components, they’re considered moving; they don’t have to move from place to place for a creature with tremorsense to detect them.

I would say this indicates you are being detected.

Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

Well, I wouldn't exactly say you are moving in stop-motion, but alas. The scorpio stays near Nalia. Go ahead and shoot us.

I've edited my post. The scorpio sits at Nalia's side and readied an action. Thus whenever Quinlan decides to do as much as picking his nose, the scorpio is going after him.

Interestingly the scorpion acts immediately BEFORE the action takes place, kind of a conundrum because in reality he cannot sense the tremor before you act but a readied action takes place immediately before you have the triggering action. Aint DnD rules funny? ;)

The Dragon Shaman began moving just as the bolt exploded near enough to him to burn his right side(Ref Save: 18), the heat of the spell blistering his right arm. Elidin continued north towards the other bridge and fired his crossbow as he moved, the burns causing him to flinch enough to send the bolt wide. Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

IF they are EVER going to hit you. The pincers need a roll of 19 to hit, so chances are slim (and given my notoriously low rolls almost neglectible). The fatigue crossbow first needs to hit you, another roll of 19 required AND if it does, then you would need to fail your save against a DC13 fort. Again: Fat chance that will be the case, I believe all the luck I had, the dice roller used up in my duel with Elidin. I have some KFBs to shoot... but dang, your refl modifier vs DC14 is so high, you are going to avoid taking ANY damage with your roguish evasion feat. So what's left? - Getting physical. Which you are going to avoid like the devil avoids holy water. So unless you make a mistake during movement, and we can actually catch up with you, I don't see what should keep you from turning us into pincushions until you run out of arrows.

That is why I asked the number of arrows you carry, to see how long the battle will be drawn out ;)

No, as you say he is running across the battlefield. In non-metagaming terms you see him disappear behind the pillar, and that's it. Nalia is in a position to spot him, and hence the hide roll. If she moves to a position where Quinlan has no cover she needs not to roll. Likewise, if Elidin moves to a position where Quinlan no longer has total cover roll a spot check to see if you spot him. The scorpion of course can pinpoint the location based on the movement.

The charging vermin proved too difficult to avoid and Quinlan gasped with pain as the giant pincer closed on him. His reflexes and acrobatic skills proved once more inavluable as the half-drow managed to wriggle out of the hold the scorpion was trying to get on him. Continuing to roll backwards the rogue slips out of range of his two flanking opponents, deftly avoiding their guards. He pulls out a small bag hanging from his utility belt while tumbling and throws it with deadly accuracy on Elidin once back on his feet. The bag bursts open on impact instantly covering the dragon shaman in sticky goo, threatening to glue him in place.

ooc: Eeek, what a mean attack! - But I miss the move action with which you 'ready' the bag to throw it. I mean: You can draw a potion from a masterwork potion belt like a weapon - you can unsheath your weapon while moving but it takes a move action to stow them. Unless I've overlooked something in the tanglefoot description, drawing the bag should be a move acion. See here for details: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/comb...htm#manipulateanItem

From the link above:
quote:
A creature that is glued to the floor (or unable to fly) can break free by making a DC 17 Strength check or by dealing 15 points of damage to the goo with a slashing weapon. A creature trying to scrape goo off itself, or another creature assisting, does not need to make an attack roll; hitting the goo is automatic, after which the creature that hit makes a damage roll to see how much of the goo was scraped off. Once free, the creature can move (including flying) at half speed. A character capable of spellcasting who is bound by the goo must make a DC 15 Concentration check to cast a spell. The goo becomes brittle and fragile after 2d4 rounds, cracking apart and losing its effectiveness. An application of universal solvent to a stuck creature dissolves the alchemical goo immediately.

Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

From rules of the game: All about movement part 2 (WoTC website)
quote:
Draw a Weapon: Use this action to draw out a sheathed weapon or other item that your DM agrees is reasonably weaponlike and stored in a holster or other convenient place where you can grab it and pull it out quickly. This does not provoke attacks of opportunity and it does not count as movement for you. If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or more, you can draw a weapon as part of your movement. That is, you can use a move action to move up to your speed and also draw a weapon as part of that move action. If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or more and you don't move, you still have to use a move action to draw a weapon. The rule reflects the flow of time in the game and the relative ease of drawing a weapon if you have even a modicum of fighting ability. Note that this rule applies only to drawing weapons and not to move actions in general.

I'd say the tanglefoot bag, and other splash weapons are reasonably weaponlike to fit the description above (i.e. you need an attack roll to use them and they have no other uses).

Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

With its prey struggling but this time not escaping, the arachnid pulled the half-drow towards him and began to squeeze the life out of Quinlan...

Constrict damage: 3pts. / Quinlan in B10 now.

SRD:
A successful hold does not deal any extra damage unless the creature also has the constrict  special attack. If the creature does not constrict, each successful grapple check it makes during successive rounds automatically deals the damage indicated for the attack that established the hold. Otherwise, it deals constriction damage as well (the amount is given in the creature’s descriptive text).

When a creature gets a hold after an improved grab attack, it pulls the opponent into its space. This act does not provoke attacks of opportunity. It can even move (possibly carrying away the opponent), provided it can drag the opponent’s weight.

Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

Elidin easily dodges the arrow fired at him as he followed the retreating Quinlan, looping around in front of him. The Dragon Shaman came at Quinlan attempting to trip the rogue, failing miserably!

Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

Round 9: The scorpio followed Quinlan mindlessly but in its weakened state the pincer once again missed by far. Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

OOC: 29 points of damage? You could have sneezed in my general direction to bring me down :-) ...1HP left

Quinlan, finally cornered is quickly consumed by the flames, his body disappearing from the arena even before the full effect of the spell is reached.

OOC: Very tough match, as expected. You played it smart, and the vermin is really useful as a "pointer" with its tremorsence. Both sides got some dismal rolls, which probably evened out. In this arena I didn't think I'd stand much of a chance, and sadly I was right... :-)

Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

good match. I have to give most of the credit to Nalia because she was the tactician for sure.

Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

Yes Quin, it was a very tough match. We wouldn't have had a chance in the tunnels, it would have taken way too long, the spells would have run out before we got to use them. And I was right about your ability to dodge all my KFBs, without the scorpion we wouldn't have stood a chance to get near you.

Thank you for the challenge :)

Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

As always the weaknesses are made painfully obvious; in Quinlans case he needs to boost his INT to make the few spells he has count.

Re: Quinlan vs. Elidin and Nalia

Nalia would need a ranged spell that doesn't allow a reflex save but she's designed to soften up the big targets at a distance then deliver the coup de grace with her combust spell once they enter melee. You can't have everything and in a duel it becomes quite apparent.
