Zar'Da appeared in the all too familiar arena. The last fight he had had here ended with him in a pile on the floor. The Shaman had no intentions of having that happen again. Zar'Da reached into his belt pouch and pulled out a potion which he drank all of, his muscles feeling a bit of a surge. Once done the drow slides his crossbow from around his back on it sling and notched a bolt. Once ready he reached inside himself and activated one of his many gifts granted him by his benefactor, a dull reddish glow enveloping his entire body. The Dragon Shaman gave a quick nod to the woman at the other end of the arena and waited for the gong to sound.

When the gong sounded Zar'da quickly raised his crossbow and fired a bolt towards Catarina, missing wildly. Before the bolt reached the other side of the arena the Dragon Shaman was on the move, his crossbow dropping to his side on the harness.

Catarina dodged the incoming bolt easily and saw Zar'Da moving out of sight. She shrugged and stowed the wand, it might come in handy later. Leasurely she took a step forth and drew another wand from her belt and activated it, increasing her stamina. Unceremoneously she dropped it on the ground, waiting for the next move of her oponent.

Catarina finally burst into action, rushing from her position to go face to face with the dark-skinned elf-kin. A few words and a gesture was enough to ensorcel her scimitar, blue arcs of lightning passing over the blade. Wildly she lashed out only to miss her oponent by the narrowest of margins. But she wasn't done with him, weaving a sigil into the air with her short sword she made her fist glow with the same crackling lightning and punched him on the arm, lightning discharging through the metal, leaving a scorched area on his armor.

Zar'Da used his shield to deflect the electrified scimitar as he activated the magic in his bracers allowing him to counter attack quickly. The Dragon Shaman's teeth closed so hard as the electricity coursed through his body from his second attack he almost bit through his tongue. The shock of Catarina's attack threw off his second attack , his hands tingling as he missed.

OOC: Now I have a question for you. I just posed this same question in the Sage Advice thread in the main ROA board. Can you cast as a standard action and attack with a weapon using Arcane Channeling? I don't think you can but I could be wrong.

ooc: Actually that's what the duskblade description said specifically, the casting and attacking is part of the same standard action. Unless I've read that wrong in the duskblade description.

The text says: "Beginning at 3rd level you can use a standard action to cast any touch spell you know and deliver the spell through and deliver the spell through your weapon with a melee attack..." A bit further down it says "At 13th level you can cast any touch spell you know as part of a full attack action..."

Sorry, I interpreted the text wrong. I assumed, since you can touch the target as part of casting a touch spell, that the idea for the duskblade's special ability was emulating the same thing.

OOC: I thought the same as you when I read it but one of the other DM's said you can not take more than one standard action, even though the reads as if the casting of the spell and the attack are the same action. Oh well. So I assume the round 2 attack is redone. You are tricking me into showing all of my secrets with all of these redos :) So when making a save you have to MEET or Beat the DC right? Or is it above the DC? If it is above then I failed both.

OOC: Looks like the debate rages on in the ROA Sage Advice section. It's looking like you were right, which I thought was the way it should be due to the wording.

No problem, we stick to the second version. To save you need to meet the DC. If you rolled 14, then you take only half damage. :)

Zar'Da could feel his skin boil and sizzle inside his armor as the flames washed over him. Out of sheer survival instinct the Dragon Shaman activated one of his many gifts granted to him by his Bronze Benefactor, the damaged skin cooling and healing completely. The drowkin took off around the nearest wall, his sword jumping into his hand as he mentally called it forth.

Catarina rushed after Zar'Da and registered him being totally healed with the cutest pout. "Awww... you can't do that all too often anymore, can you?" Then she weaved another rune with her short sword into the air and a bolt of fire streaked towards Zar'Da, impacting painfully on his shoulder.

Zar'Da was about to answer Catarina when her spell sizzled into his shoulder. With a growl the Dragon Shaman charged forward and slashed with his sword.

Catarina tried to back off and bumped into the wall having no way to evade the blade. She hissed from the pain but didn't let herself down. With vigor. Her scimitar slashed accross his belly and her short sword stabbed for his arm, with the return-slash of her scimitar missing wide. Swiftly she stepped out of the corner, unwilling to get cornered and rushed again.

As the flurry of blows landed on Zar'Da he tried to deflect them but was only able to deflect the last one, in turn letting the Shaman activate the magic in his bracers allowing him to counter strike with a solid hit. The drow weighed his options and decided he would try and get in one last hit before the woman in front of him unleashed the hell that was coming.

Catarina yelped when the unexpected riposte hit her hard. But as before she did not falter. She took a step away from Zar'Da and weaved another rune into the air, sending a ray of scorching heat against the half-drow, singing him even more.

OOC: Ok, as expected you have once again made short work of one of my characters. It's becoming kind of a bummer fighting against your characters. You are obviously a better character builder and I just feel like a punching bag against your characters. I'm beginning to feel that fighting against ROA DM made characters is a bit on the one sided. Good fight though. I at least learned something about how to play my Duskblade.

Hmm... I wouldn't exactly say I'm that much of a better character builder, yours have a flair that mine have difficulties to match. Also Catarina has been around for several years, enough to pick up more than just one RoA-bday present. I will admit that I keep a keen eye on their ability to function in combat, because I want my characters able to make a difference - probably because I feel useless too often in real life ;)

At least with this fight I've shown that duskblades do have a right to exist. They are incredibly flexible, even if they lack the big-gun spells and hitpoints/AC of a true fighter. They excel in single combat against tough foes but lack the ability to fire 'weapons of mass destruction' aka fireball etc.

I'm sorry, I didn't really mean anything by what I said. I was have an incredibly crabby day yesterday and the lose to you once again was a hit to my considerable male ego :P
