Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

S: Stone Pillar 5'x5' x 8 feet tall
This is granite, a few cracks, possibly rough enough to find hand holds.
 DC 20 Climb Check.

A: Stone Altar 4' wide x 5' long and 3' tall. (Oriented East West)
This is also a granite feature.  There are chiseled Anchor points at each corner, producing a 'tongue' 3" in diameter and 9" long.

Teams fill the positions in order, such that if there are only two teams, the first two listed starting positions are used.

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

Aerin entered the arena almost casually, she had seen the last fight of her opponents, which was very enlightening about their abilities and strategies. There were a few things to worry about and she began protecting herself by casting a spell that created three more Aerins, blurring and wavering around her, making it near impossible to tell the real one from the figment. Pulling a potion from her belt she drank it in one go and dropped the empty vial on the ground, its metallic clattering ringing through the arena.

"I see you have mastered electricity, Orophear, let's see how good you are if you cannot depend on it." she called over to the elf, a smirk on her lips.

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

"As you wish Gwendol." Orophear said with a slight bow as he slid a wand from his belt, the magic of the wand granting him the grace of a cat. Once done the elf launches into his own spell casting, his muscles bulging slightly at the end of the spell. Once done the elf draws out his long sword and smiles at his new opponent's comment.
"I guess you will have to come a little closer to find out, won't you." the elf said loudly to Aerin.

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

Aerin chuckled and stepped to the left, whipping a wand out of her belt as she did. Pointing it vaguely in Orophear's direction she activated it and a crackling bead of electricity streaked towards the misty area, exploding into a ball of scintillating energy. Done with her work, the Rashemi stowed the wand and called over to Orophear again: "So, you comming or staying there?"

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

OOC: I don't believe you can both draw and stow the wand in the same round using only 1 move action. It says explicitly:
quote:
If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you may draw a weapon as a free action combined with a regular move.
. The 5' step is not a regular move. No biggie, but you end your actions still holding the wand.

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

ooc: lol - you were the one who wanted to draw a tanglefoot bag like a weapon, now you're complaining about a single move action? - I've used this tactic for years and with BCM or other DMs - nobody ever complained. But alas, I'll concurr.

Your move, save against the spell and see if you can complete your summoning :)

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

OOC: Well, I've never considered it might be a problem before now. Hmm.

If a regular move is any distance up to your speed, that includes moving 5 feet. What's the functional difference between moving five feet and taking a 5-foot step? I can't find anything to say.

The rule also says "combined with a regular move" - not a move action. A 5ft step is a form of movement, so therefore it should be possible to draw a weapon freely on one. Though a 5ft-step/draw followed by standard+move action or a full-round action do seem to get more than their fair share of actions in a round, I can't disprove it.

While I think of it, the FAQ confirms that you may draw weapon-like objects in easy reach like you would a weapon. These include wands, rods, and staffs, and I would assume grenade-likes are included in this as well.

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

ooc: Well, I might consider Lyssander's advice "Put a wand chamber in your flail (or sword, or shield, or what have you) and activate whenever you like - +100 gp, from Dungeonscape.  Not a big deal, really.  Or, if you don't mind the visuals, tie a wand with sturdy rope to your clothing, so you can grab and let go whenever you want (no need to draw it out of a sheath)." *shrugs*

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

OOC: I thought of it as a weapon, then it became clear that you can't draw, use, and sheath without a feat (Quickdraw) or crystals of lesser return (300 gp, MIC).

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

Orophear could feel the hairs on his arm begin to stand up but due to not being able to see he was unable to dodge the full effect of the lightning attack. Once his dwarvish companion cast his spell of protection on Orophear the elf sheathed his sword and began to move, drawing out his bow as he moved.

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

ooc: Well, that's a VERY convenient result, you dispel the only spell I cannot repeat and that lowers Orophear's spells' effectiveness. Too bad you did not include any indication which spell you rolled for in the dice roller. Bad form :(

I don't want to do that. I had them in the order of what I thought was decreasing DC. I could roll a d2 and see which of your second level spells is affected though.

Re: Gwendol & Orophear vs. Aerin

ooc: DC is 15 for Aerin's spells, 14 for the potion. It is based on caster level, not spell level. So resist energy would be lowest.
