Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

  * Points of Interest The arena boundaries are the outer walls, 30' above ground level, and 10' below ground level.
    * There is a transparent wall of force ceiling 30' above ground level.
    * One combatant starts at position A, the other at B.
    * The ground consists of rough marble (hardness 10, hp 10 per cubic foot (or 20 hp per inch over a 5 ft by 5 ft square) with a 6 inch deep layer of sand on top. The sand increases the hardness of the stone by +5, but you can scoop all of the sand out of a 5 ft by 5 ft area with a full round action (which prompts an AOO).
    * The sand is fine-grained and white, and does not impede movement. Walking on it grants a +4 circumstance bonus to Move Silently checks. The sand is too fine and light to be used as a weapon.
    * The walls are made of rough marble, and are 30 ft high. Climbing the side of a wall is DC 20.
    * The pillars are also made of rough marble. They are approximately 5 ft in diameter, and a 5 ft tall section of a pillar is 100 cubic feet. However, you can bring a pillar down by narrowing your focus a bit. The minimum damage you need to deal to bring a pillar down is 25 cubic feet, or 250 damage.
    * Breaking a pillar with sudden force is a STR check (Hardness 10, Hit Points 1000, stone, one piece: DC 30.
    * Climbing the side of a pillar is DC 20. When you can reach the top edge of a pillar, it is DC 10.
    * The top of the pillars are flat-topped and rough, and make good standing platforms.
    * Diagonal movement between the central pillars offers enough space for Large creatures to move unimpeded, and Huge and Gargantuan creates to move while squeezed.

Re: Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

Adamar once again strode into the arena. Once in the elf began to prepare, drawing two daggers in the blink of an eye. Once his daggers were out the Beguiler began to spell cast, the first increasing his speed and the second causing 3 doppelgangers of himself appear around him. The elf and his images look over one another and the four of them smile and nod in approval.

OOC: Ok, I've read the description of this arena several times now and can NOT find how high the pillars are. I know I've fought here before but I just can't remember how high they are.

Re: Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

As the gong sounded Adamar and his three images took off, his hands sliding the daggers back into their sheaths on his harness. As the elf hit the center pillar he began to climb, reaching about half way up the pillar and then activating the anklet he wore teleporting him the rest of the way. Once on the top he quickly drew his bow and fired an arrow, his aim off.
"Well, well, looks like it's two against one." the elf says down to the cleric and his holy beast.

Elias stayed back, content with the defense his bison provided. With power borrowed from his scepter, Eli evoked Waukeen's cloud of coins to strike his friend, landing a solid blow.

In reply to Adamar Venali (msg # 9):

Rules say in a 5ft square of a wall between us you need a foot to establish line of effect. I don't think I should have total cover from this though.

I am 35 feet away on the horizontal plane and 20ft away vertically. The actual diagonal is 40 but D&D has funny diagonal rules. So D-8 is 30ft away and I am 45 ft.

I checked because of that power word pain of yours :)

Re: Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

Adamar had witnessed the cloud of coins do it's work many times and did not want to be taken out by it so easily. The elf channeled a portion of his magical energy into his gloves and fired off two magical bolts of energy into the celestial bison. Before the bolts hit the elf leapt off backwards from the pillar and landed on the ground next to the pillar, his images once again shuffling as he moved, the fall causing his ankles to buckle just enough to cause a bit of pain.

Round 2:
[Standard] Activate Gloves of the Starry Sky: Cast Magic Missile: 2 missiles damage: 7
[Move] Jump from pillar, Tumble Check: 30, Falling damage: 6

Status:

  Damage Taken: 12
  Damage Dealt: 7Bison

Effects:

*Expeditious Retreat: +30' to movement, Duration: 4 minutes

*Mirror Image: 3 extra images, Duration: 4 minutes

Final Position: I08

Re: Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

Expeditious retreat gives you a +12 to your jump check. You're long jumping 15 feet from a standing position so the DC is 30. I think that gives you only a 28 unless your speed is greater than 60.

Dc 15 reflex save to grab the other pillar at the end of your movement, if you did fail your jump check by 2 as it seems.
DC 15 climb check to pull yourself up (part of a new move action).

How do you figure the jump is 15'? There's only a 5' square in betwee. So shouldn't that only be 10'?

Re: Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

Diagonals alternate between 5ft and 10ft. It costs 15ft of movement to move two squares diagonally. It's the official 3.5 movement rules. I used to think actual geometry was involved and that one diagonal was 7ft of movement, but someone pointed me to the real rules in the SRD. Makes diagonals slightly more costly than they should be if you go an even number or slightly cheaper for odd.

Re: Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

OOC: *sigh* I feel that this is going to be another over before it begins battles where my character is beaten to death by a summoned creature, crappy rolls and rules that make little sense to me. But, I'm willing to let it play out. Would you be opposed to me revising my previous turn because I would not even bother trying to jump if the DC were so high.

Re: Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

No problem with you redoing it. You did have almost a good enough roll though. Nice +12 from your extra 30ft of movement. ALMOST makes up for the lack of a running start.

And I'll avoid summoning a horde of monsters if that makes things any better.

Re: Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

Oops. Missed that. I assumed it was different in this situation for failing a jump and just barely catching the edge just because the jump skill says it does, but these pillars are nicer than the skill :)

Re: Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

Adamar, did you make a jump check jumping down? It's rather trivial (DC 15) to reduce the falling distance by 10', and your tumble check ought to do the rest.

Re: Elias vs Adamar in Close Quarters

But if you pass the jump check and the tumble check there is no falling distance left to take damage from?
