Behind closed doors, the Nitrix family schemes.  More Nobles will be needed if they are to control their new acquisitions, which required a superior understanding of psionic potential to what they currently possessed.  To that end, the army pushes it's way into what has been colorfully deemed the Mindbender Quadrant by the Nitrixians, home of subterranean mutants, alien ascetics, and the rival House Lortran, all potent psionic warriors.

The Kadeshi show great reverence to the Technopope during a bi-annual celebration.  New technological gismozs are shown off, new alcohol is displayed and consumed, quite a number of ladies and gentlemen get married, and not a few people celebrate the lack of war in recent seasons by vomiting and passing out.  Will the peace long continue?

A veteran Kadeshi noble from abroad joins the cause, following his new wife from the Emporex- the lady-in-waiting Selona.  His main duty: managing the fleet and home economics.

Meanwhile, Kadesh warns that occupation of Dalton or Bazarum will result in severe diplomatic hostilities and economic sanctions.  Eden is left to be free and a military presence is not desired there, least the Kadeshi military must move from its current slumber to protect the holy land.

The Gurati are again the subject of a ceasefire pending a response to a discussion of surrender.  The Kadeshi forces are skeptical, however, and are pressing the Countess for renewed attacks.  She has not answered the popular call, yet, apparently somewhat worn out from her visit to Dalton... Some skeptical news reports suggest it is a government ploy to buy time, but they have not the common agreement of the masses.

As to Lortran and Nitrix, Kadeshi generals merely reiterate that they should avoid intruding on Kadeshi space least the growing number of nuclear arsenals deployed through the Kadeshi system be aimed at their spacecraft.  Should they require anything, their missives will be accepted.

The imperial sages report:

Spies inform us of a secret meeting of Kadesh nobles. Messages have been sent to every corner of their holdings, persumably in preparation of a lightning strike.

On the peaceful world of Aquara, a newly calmed sea monster goes berserk, smashing the floating platform a Nitrix jumpship was being refitted on. The enormous beast destabilized the sturdily built platform, making the ungainly ship wobble and nearly slide off and into the depths of the watery planet. Later on, Nitrix security found traces of an irritant in the water surrounding the platform. A private Lortran waverider was seen hastily escaping the planet not short after.

Even the Nitrix base planet is not immune from meddilng of other Houses. It is not clear what the Lortran envoy's business was there, however.

Baron Marcos of Houre Lortran used the distractions to court the leaders of the Mercenary guild. House Nitrix failed to provide proper profit for mercenary forces, and thus the offer was quickly welcomed and embraced.

The Nitrix, however, worked hard to get even with the Lortran. While blunt, cowardly and unrefined by other houses' standards, a miniature nuclear charge on the right place vaporized the Lortran jumpship on marx, along with a few thousand of Marx' inhabitants.

Unexpectedly (especially considering its neighboring Houses), Bazarium broke its alliance with house Kadesh. Radiation scarred diplomats from the peaceful world of Pyreen were the negotiators instrumental in drawing Bazarium under Gurati rule. It seems that the callous use of nuclear weapons will continue to haunt House Kadesh for a long time.


The imperial navigator reports:

The planned Lortran troop movements faltered because of Nitrix jumpship sabotage.

A newly built Kadesh jumpship escapes the takover of Bazarium and seeks refuge in the system of Bolavor. Its crew is interned and the ship taken over by Nitrix navigators.


The imperial strategist reports:

The Gurati rule over Bazarium proved extremely short as the Kadesh moved in with their Imperial Navy sponsored jumpship and dropped House Troops onto the trade planet. This also ends the independence aims of the trade council ; but reduced trade tariffs and trade subsidies quickly silenced any opposition among merchants.

On Dalton, the Kadesh force intent on capturing the planet runs into opposition... or at least it seems so. The transhuman supersoldiers guarding the world seem detached from the rest of humanity, and seem to be uncaring about the ongoing invasion. On the contrary, they offer to join the invading Kadesh force, an offer which the commander is more than eager to accept.

The nature of Lortran meddling becomes apparent - their ships contained supplies and funds for Mercenaries who chose to switch sides in this conflict.

Site 1: Nitrix homeworld

First strike: 5 dice for the Nitrix. (6,1,6,1,6. The RNG loves you.)
The combined might of house troops and the nobles' psi powers is enough to wipe out the traitorous Mercenaries.

Site 2: Aquaria

Nitrix: 1 sea monsters
Lortran: 1 Mercs
After a sickeningly long game of hide and seek, the supply base of the mercenaries is finally sunk by a decisive attack of tamed sea monsters. The few remaining mercs flee the planet in hired ships.

Site 3: Hellish

Nitrix: 1 jumpship, 2 Rimspace pirates, 1 Nitrix Suicide Squads
Lortran: 2 Mercenaries
Phase 1: Lortran suffers 1 hit, Nitrix suffers 3 hits
Confusing short range actions in the tunnels and domed cities of Hellish see vicious battles between hireling forces; even the bravery of the Suicide Squads is insufficient to stop the Mercenaries from taking over the planet in the name of House Lortran. It was only by a hair, though. The Jumpship sitting complacently on a landing pad was quickly destroyed as well.

Countess Kadesh steps out onto a podium before a cheering crowd of followers.  She smiles at them fondly.  She seems quite fatigued, but her eyes shine with a resilience that only one who knows the beloved gospel of the Technopope could understand.  The endless criticism of the galactic community about her nuking Pyreen has worn her down, but it has not ended her belief in the justice of her cause.

"People of the new Era!  Citizens of Science!  As you know, we have been engaged in a struggle for life and death.  Although the Gurati have been given every opportunity to turn aside a deleterious war- in hopes that during our observation of the holidays they would have time to cool down, they have only sought to annoy us or blight us with fresh advances.  By infiltrating Bazarum, they have shown an uncanny willingness to appropriate our territory without consideration.  By invading holy Eden with a large force, they have filled the space-waves with cries for our aid from the Edeni clergy."

She does not mention that the clergy added a few words about that aid not including nuclear arsenals, nor does she note that they did not include the bishop's plea alongside theirs.

"Citizens!  We are poised on the edge of history.  Listen."  She finds that they are screaming loudly and she cannot be heard.  She holds up her hands, wishing the speech were already over.  It takes a while for the crowd to quit screaming and Lady Varlia smiles... hiding the effort it takes.

"I wish to applaud Duke Lortran's end to expansion.  We shall avoid entangled relations with him as long as he does the same with us.  We applaud the restraint Lord Dekko Nitrix has shown towards our space, especially when he might have seized Bazarum so recently.  This causes us to forgive the loss of a jumpship and to grant it as a gift of friendship."

She pauses and looks across the crowd, separated by bullet-proof glass and various energy fields.  Is this what life has become with the new threat of assassinations?  Did Lady Selona know what she was marrying into?  Probably... worse, she is a greater schemer than Varlia's family.  The Countess is not sure she doesn't regret recruiting her.

"We have decided that the Gurati must decide.  Time is out.  Baron Gurati, if you are listening, I ask that you decide to lay down arms for the sake of your people.  Pay us a reparation for occupying Bazarum and Eden, and... leave our system.  Leave Eden.  If you do not do this, then we shall advance until you are destroyed and the righteousness of our cause shall burn away your impure evil and grostesque machinations.  And the holy thunder shall strike down our enemies and roar of the jumpship shall blot out your vile counsels and there shall be no more mercy when you repent and beg on bended knee.  So let it be, O people of Kadesh!"

And she turned from the podium and went inside with slow, almost regal movements.  The careful observer might have noticed many of her hairs had begun turning white... Someone with a lens- prohibited- might have noticed she slumped slightly against a wall before turning completely inside...

ROUND 7

-=The Nitrix Homeworld=-

The hallway leading to to the War Room was a somber and inspiring visage, filled with the painted portraits of previous Lords...Dekko had not had his own painted yet.  It was traditional that one wait a full year before indulging their ego in such a way, any lesser amount of time and one was little more than a foot note, unworthy of a place in the hall.  Given the Nitrix tendency towards insurrection, assassination, and sabotage, the Hallway was not near as full as one might expect given the depth of intergalactic history.  Sprawled in the hallway were men in ash gray uniforms and matte black armor, a white sphere giving that black shape over the heart of each member of the House Guard, an eight pointed black star with four curved lines leading from the border to the center.

The door to the War Room was ajar, revealing it's polished black interior.  A table with a holographic display had been rudely upended and apparently used for cover.  Men lay dead on the floor here as well, their uniforms the colors of the vaunted Imperial Mercenary Guild, each man's face was flushed and swollen as if stung by thousand bees, and where their head lay against the floor a dull strata of indigo and green extended in a small radius.  Dekko himself stood upright in the chamber, his unarmored gray uniform adorned with a black cape held in place by a silver cord, a spiderweb like spray of scarlet and white crawled across the floor and ended at the feet of each Mercenary.  The chamber was made of Astori Crystal, an artificial mineral of no practical value at all, but highly sought after by the Nitrix for it's curious ability to register psionic phenomena in it's presence and display it in vivid displays like the one surrounding Dekko now. It found it's way into all the most important chambers of Nitrix officials, so that the unattuned could see the building psionic storm around a passionate commander that the psi-sensitives felt all too acutely.

Boots stormed down the hall, and Dekko relaxed as he felt the aura of Karth amongst those coming.  Relaxed, but kept his hand on the sidearm hidden underneath his cape...it never paid to trust a Nitrix too closely, a moment of weakness like this assault on the capital tempted them all with whispers of improving their own prominence.  Particularly the young ones, like Karth.

"Dekko!  Thank the Technopope you're alive, when we saw the men outside...!"  Karth started, comming to an abrupt stop as Dekko raised a hand from his side and closed it in a fist, signaling for silence.

"Old man Lortran is more canny than I gave him credit."  Dekko said, striding over to kick one of the dead Mercs in the chamber "It cost him not a Solat, but he has deprived us of all allies, save the gutless Imperial Beaurocracy.  Round up those Mercenaries still alive on Nitrix.  I want them "reassigned" to the Suicide Squads, and don't bother being subtle about it.  They'll be moving to The Front as soon as possible as an example to the Rimspace Pirates should those glorified brigands get any funny ideas in the wake of current events." wandering towards the holographic table, Dekko grabbed hold of the edges with both hands and put it upright again.

"And rescind the banishment of Faradi Nitrix.  I'm reinstating the Blacksun Corps, and there isn't a Nitrix alive better versed in the art of shadow warfare." Dekko finished, of course, Faradi's talent for running spy rings and finding assassins and saboteurs had been what had resulted in her exile in the first place.  Old man Gendel had become worried she might seek to depose him, and had sent her away to govern an unimportant dustball where storms blocked communication signals most days.  It was a risk, but by returning Faradi to the work she loved, and perhaps offering her a more stately world to call her own, she could be appeased.

The imperial sages report:

The Church of Mankind courts the peaceful but powerfully psychic natives on the alien world of Zenceti. Common ground is quickly found, and the Zenceti council agrees to come under the protection of wise Duke Lortran. They refuse to let their own fight off-world however.

However, the Lortran plans suffer a serious setpack when their jumpship on Marx has to be written off due to massive systems failiure. The ship had served well for years, but it seems the latest attack of rust worms on vital systems left it inoperable... curously, the rust worms were only found on the critical junction. The imperial spies find it conspicuous that Karth Nitrix was absent from his residence at the exact same time.

Lord Kirtiu Prad and Lady Selona Prad are seen on all planets controlled by House Kadesh this month. It seems they are concentrating their effort on providing a strategic advantage to the Countess' military movements.

The remaining Gurati nobles, the old Baron and his successor, Castile, show up on Eden and the Gurati homestar, making numerous public appearances and urging merchants to do business. A new time of prosperity arrives for Gurati subjects.

A sizeable amount of Solats changed hands today, as Lord Nitrix made a generous gift to the Countess. Speculations about the meaning of this are plentiful.


The imperial strategists report:

The long awaited move of the Countess has been made. A swarm of ships deposits their load on the barren wold of Frost. Posessing no intrinsic value other than its strategic position, the world is expected to fall quickly.

Frost:
Kadesh: 4 jumpships, 2 nuclear arsenals, 4 warrior priests (2,psi), 2 Amazonians (3), 1 noble (Priestess Captain Sayla)
Gurati:3 ice barbarians (3, fs), 1 colonial rangers (2)

Nuclear exchange phase: the Kadesh incinerate much of the small inhabited area of the world. The few volcanic peaks that provided heat for comfortable life are now but giant radioactive calderas. No defending units were destroyed, even if there were close calls.
round 1:
Psychic phase: two of the warrior priests unleash enormous molecular disruption effects that melt through icestorms as readily as through fortifications
First strike phase: Kadesh troops have a hard time adapting to the icestorms and rugged mountainious terrain. Popping up from unexpected places, the defending Ice barbarians manage to remove the two Amazonian regiments, leaving the dismembered beautiful women in the middle of an icy waste... A regiment of warrior priests that came to their rescue also was obliterated by unseen, higly adapted barbarians.
Combat phase: The Kadesh forces break into subterranean ice tunnels used by the barbarians. The offworld troops are led on a wild goose chase through the tunnels by the elite Colonial Rangers; much mining and ambushes later, no damage was done to either side. (OOC: someone lucked out big time  this round :))
round 2:
Psychic phase: Not one of the psi-heavy Kadesh units managed to call down ungodly fury. It must be the confining ice tunnes, the cold, the feeling of imminent death...
First strike phase: The barbarians tried to lure the Kadesh troops into the vincinity of a huge fusion reactor and blow that up. That worked... almost. One of the Warrior priests perished.
Combat phase: Again, the untouchable colonial rangers make sure the few remaining kadesh troops are left in the numbing cold wondering what exactly they are doing there... Priestess Captain Sayla had to resort to extreme measures of regaining order and discipline.
round 3:
Psychic phase: Probably spurred on by the ruthless Priestess, the remaining two regiments of Warrior priests manage to unleash a huge maelstrom of psi energy that burns hotter than anger.
First strike: Incredibly, despite the amount of destruction (leaving a few new molten lakes on Frost), there are no casualties.
Combat phase: Finally, a regiment of psychic priests manages to locate the tiny contingent of Colonial Rangers aiding the defense of Frost. The brave men are quickly exterminated - but the last one holds a smile, and a detonator that overloads their jumpships' engines and lets a hundred cubic kilometers of planet disappear... along with the unknown hero, and a regiment of warrior priests.
round 4:
Psychic phase: Shocked, desperate and alone, Priestess captain Sayla and her remaining regiment manage to tap into the psychic energy pool...
First strike phase: However, even those terrible energies are not enough to exterminate the ice barbarians. They do not emerge from hiding to attack the Priestess either, however, preferring to let Frost itself show the folly of invading an ice waste to the Kadesh....
round 5:
Psychic phase: The cold and isolation finally break the Kadeshi hold on psi energies. They find themselves abandoned, alone, and...
First strike: ...outnumbered. The Ice barbarians show up around them like ghosts, wielding cold monosteel blades and soundless ranged weapons. Priestess Captain Sayla was the last one to fall, her once beautiful body battered beyond recognition. She remains displayed on an altar of eternal ice next to Frost's spaceport for all to see.

Despite all odds, the Ice Barbarians managed to defend Frost from a superior and sophisticated opponent. Surely, the Countess should have provided even more nuclear arsenals to blanket Frost with nuclear fire... or perhaps the Kadesh can conquer only planets softened up by a bombardment? Be it as it may, the loss of so many regiments and a noble will be felt throughout Kadesh space.

From his black chair on Nitrix, Dekko studies the battle of Frost, trying to deduce if the Kadesh had had a poor showing, or if the Gurati's drill instructors had brought out a hidden potential in the barbarians of Frost.  Nodding to himself, he prepared his orders for the coming months.

There are no speeches, no celebrations, no mournings, no chatter, no diplomatic messages... nothing.  It is as if the life has gone out of the Kadesh house... and with the death of Sayla, bright and competent niece to the countess, perhaps it has.  The loss of 53 megacredits when no damage was done that was not immediately rebuilt has shaken the confidence of the Kadeshi.

THEY RESPOND TO NO COMMUNICATIONS.


Indeed, the Kadeshi move mechanically, as if from reflex, and even their embassies abroad cannot pierce the murky quiet which has settled upon the faction.  The Countess, it is rumored, is dead.  The Countess, it is rumored, threw herself upon Sayla's pyre and burned alive.  The Countess, it is rumored, has gone into an asylum.  The Countess, it is rumored, is mad and attacks any women who come into the palace.

Truly, the faction seems to be running smoothly through only the competence of its well-trained generals but the unifying force of magnetism that held it together is missing...  Will this last?

The imperial sages report:

In a rather surprising move, the representatives of the Imperial Aristocracy announced that their alleigance in the sector will shift to house Nitrix. Instrumental in forming the deal was Dekko Nitrix, the currently most exposed Nitrix.

The trend for shifting political alleigances seems to be sweeping throughout the vast Imperial organizations. The Imperial Navy, seemingly disappointed by the lack of Kadeshi success and their heavy-handed tactics, grants its aid to House Gurati.

The Lortran seem out of options and out of luck. With both their jumpships destroyed, they have to be content with the planets acquired so far.

There were many troop movements, but no conflicts were initiated, other than the loss of an Imperial Navy jumpship that got caught on the wrong side of the border.

All in all, a great slowdown in the tempo of operations. However, the kadesh seem to be preparing a huge offensive.

ROUND 9

The Nitrix celebrate the pronouncement of the first Nitrix Lord, all across their holdings grand parades, feasts, and spectacles are held to remind the people of their pride and importance to the royal family.  Fruits and beasts from Bolavor are popular items at these feasts, and the new subjects are welcomed to participate and share their own forms of entertainment.  In the state house on the Nitrix Homeworld itself, the largest gala is held, as much to impress the Imperial Aristocracy as to lift the spirits of the people.

While excellent for Nitrixian morale, due to this week long revel, very little work is actually accomplished.

Damn!  I was pretty much relying on Saboteurs to get to New Eden ahead of the army, then seek out and destroy any nuclear arsenals and Warrior Priests while I was at it.  Even had a nice little bit of fluff involving The Inquisition all prepped...well, now I get to gamble the bulk of my forces against a well protected Gurati world.  I hope this isn't the start of a trend with the RNG.

Kadesh continues to keep quiet.  Embassies are instructed to suggest that the strong Gurati growth, especially on Eden, is indicative of trouble.  Kadeshi diplomats in their respective embassies suggest that there will be nothing but licking of wounds for the time being... or, as they put it, 'soul-searching'.

Diplomacy will resume next season and the Countess will be available for contacting once again.

In his quite chambers on Lortran the Duke discuss the situation with his gray-clad advisors.
"M'lord.  The other houses' momentum has dropped.  The Kadesh are still sulking after their defeat on Frost, and the Nitrix are consolodating their forces.  We are less certain of Gurati's intentions, but we have reason to believe they are preparing for another major conflict with the Kadesh."
Duke Lortran takes in this information silently.  He nods, and turns to the next advisor.
"M'lord, without jumpships, we are unable to claim more territory.  Our enemies ply the jumplines, while we are stuck in our unproductive portion of space.  The situation is dire."

The Duke allows another of his characteristic long silences to pass before responding.  "You underestimate our position.  Even without jumpships, we have the church.  They can turn populations to our side as well as can an invading army."

The advisors all look down at their feet sheepishly.  At last one of them speaks.  "This is true, M'lord, but the bishops require unoccupied lands to spread their message, and much of space is locked under military command..."

The Duke nods.  "Yes, it is true that the church has brough us few new worlds of late.  We must re-initiate ties with the spacing guild.  We have many troops, but we need to transport them.  The guild cannot be trusted, but they can be bought.  Send an emisary to negotiate terms."

The advisors bow and turn to leave, then the Duke adds.  "And see if anything can be done on Bazarium.  The Kadesh's hold there is weak, and the people lack spiritual guidance.  Tell the bishops to focus their energies on converting the population there."

The imperial sages report:

D'Silvia Gurati, cousin of the Baron, comes of age. A lavish celebration is held on the Gurati basestar, and amidst much splendor she accepts her duty as a vassal of the Baron.

Local intelligence reports many failed sabotage activities on the world of Eden. The originator of the subversions is unknown, but Gurati security managed to stave off the massive effort, for now.

Meanwhile, on the bustling world of Bazarium, kadesh security is not nearly so fortunate. The regimental base of the House Troops that were garrisoning the industrial planet were flooded with toxins, and few troopers survived the assault. Marquis Alex of House Lortran is rumored to be an expert in exactly that kind of attack.

The head of House Kadesh was roused from her grief, and burts into action - following massive diplomatic efforts by her diplomatic staff, the Spacing Guild agreed to move its support to her House. This will no doubt be not too pleasing to their former allies, house Gurati. As a result, many Gurati regiments suddenly found themselves with no transportation. It seems, only house Kadesh is immune to transport problems, owing to its strategic positioning.

However, the alliance between the Kadesh and the Spacing Guild was to be short lived. The members of the Kadeshi diplomatic team were found dead of unknown causes, and even the Countess felt the icy closeness of death, as the Lortran used less than subtle methods of persuasion. The heads of the Spacing Guild, being the easily cowed merchants they are, promptly shifted their alleigance to house Lortran.

The Gurati nobles aid greatly in the development of their star systems. Solats flow from their holdings, and citizens rejoice at the newfound wealth and prosperity.


The imperial strategists report:

Many troop movements have been completed this month, however no decisive action was played. One might come yet in the form of a Kadesh assault on Gurati holdings, or a Lortran gambit on Eden.

"M'lord, our negotiations with the spacing guild have been successful.  Their services are now at your disposal," the gray-clad advisor reported.  For a long moment, Duke Lortran did not respond, his attention focused on the stars in the night sky outside his window.  The advisor stepped back a step and joined the others near the far wall of the quiet room.

"This is good news," Duke Lortran said at last, turning to look at the group of councilors.  A smile spread accross his face.  "I told you our situation was not so dire."

Another advisor stepped forward, and spoke softly to the Duke.  "Our enemies gather forces near our borders.  The Gurati have entrenched themselves on Eden, while the Kadesh and Nitrix have gathered large forces within one jump.  Thanks to our deal with the spacing guild, the Gurati cannot reinforce Eden should either the Kadesh or the Nitrix move to invade.  It is impossible to say who will control the solar templars next month."

Duke Lortran takes in this news, his smile not fading.  "We cannot influence this fight at this point, so let us remain neutral, and congratulate the victor, whoever it turns out to be.  Consoldate our holdings, though.  The victor may not be content with one conquest.  Send Alex and Marcos to Marx.  They are young, and are eager to get off Lortran, I think. Though patience will surely be the key to victory here, we should not waste youthful ambition where we have it."  His eyes sparkle slightly as he grins at his advisors.

"Of course, M'lord.  I shall inform Marquis Alex, and Baron Marcos of your wishes immediately."

Dekko Nitrix stands before a field of unmarked graves, expression unreadable as he stands at rigid attention.

Faradi Nitrix leans back in her well padded executive chair, sipping a sickly sweet Bolavor fermented fruit drink, looking at the lush and beautiful world she'd been reassigned, apparently content.

Zibble screams orders to a collected assembly of soldiers, the vast majority wearing the semi-gloss black armor and spikes of the Nitrix Suicide Squads.  The units arranged at the front of the assembly wear different uniforms than the rest, the dark navy blue of the Mercenary Guild.

Karth, in the company of a group of men who're trying hard not to look like soldiers, hands over a briefcase to and distinguished looking gentleman in a dark brown suit with a cybernetic left eye.

The imperial sages report:

Duke Tycho apparently managed to court the Head Surgeon of Silex successfully. The ghoulish technological sect has agreed to help the Lortran for the time being, perhaps even with one of their "Reconstructed".

Disaster struck aboard a brand-new jumpship in orbit over Bazarium. The Kadesh crew could do nothing but evacuate the huge vessel as one by one system failed. The huge hulk remains in orbit around the commercial world. Bids from private salvage contractors are plentiful. The charismatic Baroness Carly of House Lortran has been sighted on the planet just hours before the incident.

The imperial Aristocracy, being (CENSORED BY THE SAGE OVERSEER) have decided to shift their alliance yet again,  perhaps inspired by the employment of Suicide squads by the Nitrix, their former allies. Be it as it may, the Gurati certainly seem like a more likely ally for the aging head of the association of noble houses.

On Griddox, a whole regiment of prison soldiers simply disappeared. Experts say that this is the handiwork of Karth Nitrix, who used an offworld group to offer a whole Gurati penal regiment sanctuary. The whereabouts of the missing prison soldiers have yet to be uncovered.

Still unaware about the Aristocracy's imminent change of alleigance, diplomats pulled strings and ropes to get the local representative of th Imperial Navy to side with the Nitrix. They succeeded admirably, the single Navy jumpship left on Seedeen being left unusable as the crew vanished into interstellar night on a courier.


The imperial tactician reports:

Finally, after quite some time, we have a fight on our hands. Long range recon reports Nitrix jumpships converging upon Eden, where the Baron himself holds the position.

No side elected to use Nuclear weapons on the holy world of Eden.
Psychic phase: A whole maelstrom of psi energy is summoned on Eden, as nine units draw upon unnatural energies. The Nitrix are completely luckless, but the combines psi powers of the Baron and his Templars summon up a storm (+8 AD!)
First strike phase: Zibble's squad and the Imperial Stormtroopers led by the Baron square off. In a battle reminiscent of ancient times, small units clash while the rest of the armies are formed on the sidelines of the conflict. Nither come out on top; the Imperials are decimated by suicide bombs just as they land the killing blow.
Nitrix: 3 jumpships (Pending Glory, Red Dawn, Shining Lady), Zibble Nitrix, 3 Subterranean Mutants (1p), 4 Suicide Squads(2s), 1 Damperfield, (+2s) =11AD

Regular combat phase: The seemingly vastly inferior Nitrix side manages to hold on to a tiny advantage; battles rage through holy forests surrounding the almost ritualistic first combat of this conflict. Losses amount to 2 regiments for each side, as unorthodox Nitrix tactics seem to surprise native Templars.
Nitrix: 3 jumpships (Pending Glory, Red Dawn, Shining Lady), Zibble Nitrix, 3 Subterranean Mutants (1p), 2 Suicide Squads(2s), 1 Damperfield, (+2s+4s).
Gurati: Baron Gurati, 2 colonial rangers (2), 3 solar templars (3p)

Round 2, psi phase: Unearthly powers resist the will of those who would bend them to their will this round; only the Baron with his huge experience manages to secure a minor effect to help in the battle.
Round 2, first strike: Again single units come to bear on eachother; the Baron and Zibble Nitrix, incinerating the countryside with their anger. This time the Baron comes out on top, sending Zibble into flight and destroying his unit.
Nitrix: 3 jumpships (Pending Glory, Red Dawn, Shining Lady), Zibble Nitrix, 3 Subterranean Mutants (1p), 1 Suicide Squads(2s), 1 Damperfield, (+2s). +6 suicide bonus=11 AD

Round 2, regular combat phase: Lightning strikes from suicide squads, along with tactical level nuclear, biological and chemical warheads placed by volunteers wreak havoc with units defending Eden. Many fall, most of them specialist Rangers who valiantly try to disarm the suicide warheads. None of them succeed. In retaliation, the last of Nitrix suicide squads is eliminated, but this is a weak consolation.
Nitrix: 3 jumpships (Pending Glory, Red Dawn, Shining Lady), Zibble Nitrix, 3 Subterranean Mutants (1p), 1 Damperfield, (+4s).
Gurati: Baron Gurati, 3 solar templars (3p)

round 3, psi phase: Both sides, encouraged by the bloodshed and sheer will for survival, draw upon their last reserves to summon psychic fires. (+4/+6)
Round 3, first strike: In what has meanwhile become a ritual between the two, Zibble and the Baron face off on the charred remains of a forest. Sheer grit and determination allow the Nitrix noble to hold on, and in the clash of arms and psychic powers both manage to decimate the other's units.

Round 3: Dispersed units wander aimlessly through the charred remains of the majestic forests of Eden. Thick smoke and fog obscures their vision, and no side can get a hold on the other.

Round 4 psi: Nitrix mutants manage to call up an unprecedented psychic maelstrom that manifests as biting, icy wind cutting down everything in its path. Even the fearless Solar Templars seem cowed ...
Round 4 first strike: ...However, luck is again with the Baron. On the brink of defeat, he secures an unlikely access to the opponent's flank, and with his regiment of Solar Templars massacres the remaining Nitrix units in a great bloodbath.

The baron and three of his Solar Templar commanders were seen inspecting the charred, smoking remains of the invasion site. Fortunately much of Eden was left untouched by the fighting - but even so it will take decades, if not centuries to regrow the magnificent forests, rebuild the landscape and remove Nitrix biotoxins.

The people of Lortran welcome the Duke's sister, Duchess Catherine, to their planet.  The firey noblewoman is said to be nearly as skilled a politician as Tycho, and she applies herself to house Lortran's goals with a vengence.  Meanwhile, the Duke continues to push his slow, patient plans, somewhat to the chargrin of his younger and more eager relatives on Marx.
