Error in Notice thread

link to a message in this forum

Nerwen:
Please do not make links to this forum in any of the official RPoL public forums (including Community Chat). We do have an ad in Wanted-Players if anyone would like to bump it occasionally.

The ad link is broken.

Re: Error in Notice thread

I think it's because it wasn't being bumped for too long. I think that Nerwen needs to create a new Wanted Players ad.

Re: Error in Notice thread

Actually, it's because we're no longer allowed to have an ad in Wanted-Players. We're not a "game" and therefore don't need players (or GMs).

We're also still not allowed to mention the existence of this place in the public forums, so basically it's up to people talking to each other in games (or via rMail) to get the word out.

In the meantime, I'll edit. ;)

This seems very odd.  If it's a public forum, why can't you mention it in public forums?  As an extension of that thought: why would anyone want to run this sort of thing as a Discussion instead of a game when Discussions are not allowed to "advertise" anywhere at all?  There's no ban on mentioning the Portrait Posse in General RPOL (as far as I know), so why wouldn't you be able to mention other Discussion forums?

Can't you guess?

Re: Error in Notice thread

Well, see. They don't actually want people to run open discussion boards here. It's actively discouraged, as you see. :p I had to do a fair amount of politicking to get this up and running.

As I understand the reasoning: since we aren't an "official" RPoL forum, we get to fall under the same anti-advertising rules as every other user-run place (game or board). (The Portrait Posse actually does official RPoL business, as does Adult Game Ads.) And since we're also not an actual game, we can't advertise in Wanted-Players/Wanted-GMs. We do have the board listed in the rules post of Game Systems, but that's it as far as public mention in the official boards.

In addition, we're also not supposed to compete directly with Wanted-Players, hence the ads guideline that strongly encourages dupe posting of any ads here to there. (We compromised on not making it an absolute requirement; there are at least a few people on RPoL who prefer to avoid the official boards and do well with advertising for players in other people's games, and I want them to see this place as similar to that.)

I'm not in agreement with it. I just follow it. There are a few differences in the details of my vision for what RPoL could be, compared to jase's, but it's jase's place, so we go by his version of it - and those are the terms.

You're free to ask the RPoL mods to clarify further if you'd like.

Yeah, I get that impression.  I have a game that I am thinking of petitioning for the Discussion category (you can see it in the Game Systems sticky right after WOD), but the inability to advertise seems like it ruins the whole point.

Re: Error in Notice thread

I find it sad to think we can't advertise when this little community could improve from the voices of many. At least, like Nerwen said, there is nothing stoping us from advertising in games that allow it.

Re: Error in Notice thread

Well, the main benefit of running it as an open board is so anyone can wander in and out whenever they want, without having to jump through signup hoops, without having to get approval by whoever thought of the board first, and without being tracked for whether they'd looked or not (cast list). I'd personally love to see a lot more of these here. There used to be an open L5R board, but it seems to have disappeared (probably because the mod disappeared).

On the other hand, I can also understand the moderator view of not opening a new can of troublemaker worms. In order for this one to be considered at all, I first had to be a high-caliber upstanding RPoL citizen who had never caused any problems in the past for any reason. Then there had to be some expectation I'd be around to run it for the longterm.

My personal view is that the moderators should be chosen by the community who will likely use the board. And that there should be three of them, firstly because that way there's always at least one person around if others are busy offline, and secondly in case there's a complex situation that needs a tiebreaking vote. The key point being, make sure that any troubles arising within the board can be handled by the board mods without adding to the workload of the RPoL mods (and that the board itself won't cause trouble).

Before this board got set up, we had a thread in GPIA to discuss who we wanted as board mods, taking into consideration "upstanding RPoL citizen" and "has been around for a while" and "reliable." Then once we decided, we (I) submitted our choices to jase, and he gets final say on whether to go with those or not.

If there were more discussion boards, the Discussion section would advertise itself just by its size. And in time the advertising rules may change, as RPoL continues to change.

Re: Error in Notice thread

You may be wondering why I'm finding this stuff.  Well, I'm busy plagarizing your administrative format for this forum over in my hopefully-soon-to-appear Star Wars Forum.  In the process of plagarizing, I'm also reading everything letter for letter, which allows me to find errors.

Re: Error in Notice thread

It's already open as a game in the Sci-Fi section.  Once it's fully ready, I'll ask the mods to move it to Discussion.

link to another game

Note, this link may change when we move to the new category; I'm not sure.

Re: Error in Notice thread

It'll stay the same - the important part is the game id number, and that doesn't change no matter what category you move it to.

Glad you liked my Guidelines post. Thanks for the proper crediting. ;)

At this point I think the tangent has strayed far enough away from anything related to the WoD or this forum, so while I'll leave the thread open, let's use it only for reporting any other errors you find.
