Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

After several days of constantly dodging Lion patrols, you emerge from the dangers of Lion Lands into dubious safety of the most contested city in the history of the Empire.  The crowning military achievement of the Crane--with its high walls lined with Crab seige engines--is a starkly impressive sight, worthy of its reputation as the bloodiest property in Rokugan.

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

"Well, my friends," Miya Shiko smiles wanly, "we seem to have made it to our destination.  I would like to thank you now for your aid, without which I doubt I would have reached Toshi Ranbo with such celerity.  It was an honor to travel with you," the Shisha's expression becomes grim, "once we enter the city, however, things will be different.  You will become vassals of the Crane and I will stand as the representative of the Emperor, unable to show partiality in any way."

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

Kedo has moved smoothly across the miles that the journey demanded, his lean but obviously resilient body quite able to keep up with the horses so long as a gentle pace is maintained, any if the Ronin has complaints they are, characteristically kept to himself until they are forgotten.

And so at last when the walls of The City (for few others deserve such capitalisation) appear in sight and Miya Shiko speaks her thanks and her warning, it's perhaps a little surprising that the gray-clad man looks up at her with slight surprise and a tilt of the head that smoothly turns into the half-bow of someone showing respectful appreciation to a person of greater station mounted on a horse.

Unsurprisingly, he doesn't say much of anything - speak when spoken too, after all, is the best rule for a grayclad man to live by.

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

It was rare that Daidoji Sakura's duty matched Shosuro Kasumi's duty. There were exceptions, however rare they might have been, and one of those was on Sakura's mind. She had been debating for days -- long before they entered Lion territory -- how to handle her dilemma. She had considered assassinating the Imperial Messenger, however she doubted that would do any good. The message that she was concerned about would, undoubtedly, get to it's intended recipient anyway. And to destroy, in a single act, so many of her honorable Clanmates -- both Scorpion and Crane would need a much stronger justification. She had also considered stealing or replacing the messages, however once again that would do nothing. Finally she considered reading them all, trying to figure out what they said, but that also would do nothing.

She was left with only one alternative.

"Shiko-Chama*" she began in a sincere tone, "I cannot say how much this particular opportunity for me to be of service to the Empire means to me." She followed this with a sincere bow.

This was, ironically enough, the truth. She couldn't say, for to do so would reveal here hand. All she would be able to do for now would be to hold off for long enough to talk to the Scorpion and attempt to enlist some aid. Ironically enough, the Crane Clan Champion had provided her with the perfect excuse ...

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

Your entrance into the most contested City in the Empire is remarkably uneventful.  You are only briefly questioned at the gates and your papers are accepted without question.  [Private to Daidoji Sakura: you recognize all of the gate guards as Harriers]

Miya Shiko makes a graceful exit, and the rest of you are ushered into see Doji Kusanagi.

Kusanagi is young for his position, recently appointed after being the only surviving officer of the last Crane assult on Toshi Ranbo.  His offices are stark, as if he expects at any moment to evacuate the City, with only a few personal touches -- a poem scroll on one wall and a shrine to a deceased relative in one corner.

"Sit, please," he says, "things are a bit busy here in Toshi Ranbo as you may have noticed, and I do not currently have time to show you around.  However, Asahina Jiro, Dadoji Tsukiko, and Satoru can answer all of your questions.  I must leave to inspect the walls, please feel free to stay as long as you like."

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

Kneeling by the right hand edge of a small table, a young woman watched the new arrivals with veiled interest.  She was as refined and alert as the travellers were dust covered and tired.  She looked across at the two men who had been waiting for the newcomers with Doji Kusanagi, before turning back and beginning to speak.

"We shall, of course, make our guests welcome and notify them of the latest circumstances," the courtier assured Kusanagi with a slight inclination of her head before she turned her attention back to the newly arrived samurai.  "I hope that your journey was not too arduous?" Tsukiko asked, her voice rising and falling in melodious tones.

[Private to Kaze no Kage: What is the gist of recent events that Tsukiko would know regarding the taking of Toshi Ranbo and current military/diplomatic activities, please?  I'm just trying to work out what she would be able to say.]

As the flunky of a flunky, Kedo is of course expected to remain silent in this sort of meeting, and indeed he does, even meeting the usual poor courtesy accorded to a Ronin (even one in good company) without comment or complaint - it is after all, quite rightly below notice.

Instead, the gray-clad man simply moves where Daidoji Sakura moves, flanking her where the chambers allow, following where they do not, silent and as attentive as his sometimes dreamlike perceptions allow, though even he starts slightly and looks with mild surprise at his companion when she so blatently ignores the polite overtures of Daidoji Tsukiko.

 A family matter, perhaps?

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

Though Tsukiko maintained a dignified silence as she waited for one of the three travellers to speak, she found her eyes drifting to the young shugenja.

Daidoji Sakura... Tsukiko mentally waded through the lists of family members she had committed to memory and it was only a few minutes later that she was able to recall what she had learned of the young Crane.

Ah, the sole survivor of the Yagyu family.  I wonder why Kuwanan-sama would have sent her here to Toshi Ranbo, and with a Ronin bushi as escort, no less.  Surely the Kakita Academy is not so lacking in skilled swordsmen and women that they could not spare a proper yojimbo to bring her here safely?  Her contempt for the daimyo-less samurai was locked inside; it would not be proper to insult a guest even if he did not fit into the proper place of samurai within the Celestial Order of Rokugan.

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

Sakura waited for a moment or two. This was not simply to be polite, but rather she needed to remember her place. Still, she could not wait for too long ...

"Tsukiko-San" Sakura finally interrupted the silence, "your Lord is aware of the Lion Army camped not far from here, ne?" She waited only a heartbeat before continuing; there simply wasn't enough time for the usual pleasantries. "I'm sure that Kedo-Kun would be happy to provide you with any information we have that may be relevant."

Sakura subtly repositioned herself so that the Daidoji tattoo peeked out from under her sleeves.

"I have urgent business with the Captain of the local Daidoji guard, and after that I have business with the Scorpion. Doji Kuwanan-Sama authorized me to speak with them, though I'm certain that they will wish to speak with Your Lord's representative once they have heard the message I bear."

The look in Sakura's eyes made it clear to any Daidoji watching that whatever she had to say must be said to Harriers and Harriers alone -- and should not be heard by any non-Daidoji. Whatever Tsukiko needed to know she would be told by those "in the know".

The other young woman's movement was not lost on the courtier, not the flash of a familiar tattoo which Tsukiko also held upon her skin.  The message was clear; this was a matter for family, and family alone.  It would not do, however, to make the other assembled persons feel as though they were being excluded due to their bloodlines and Tsukiko was more than capable of smoothing the matter over so that no one would be offended.

"I am afraid I have no head for the intricacies of war," Tsukiko replied, not catching Satoru's eye lest he respond to the half truth.  Tsukiko was more than capable of understanding most of what would be said but she never spoke of military activities if she had the choice; the pain of her brother's death was still too raw and the association between battle and his loss too close.  "Satoru-san and Jiro-san are far better versed in such matters.  Perhaps if your companions would be willing to speak with them then I shall escort you to the Taisa and wait until you are ready to return?"

Sakura politely nodded her assent.

"Kedo-Kun is both observant and quiet" Sakura replied, "admirable traits in a Yojimbo. But one of the reasons that I requested him."

Sakura rose before turning to her two companions. She knew that Kedo's honor would not allow him to remain so easily.

"Kedo-Kun, I'm sorry but I must order you to remain here for now. Tsukiko-San and the Taisa will see to my safety."

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

And yet it is a difficult thing to insult a Ronin who is at peace with his station - after all, theirs is not the touchy pride of the great clans, nor the need for the intensely personal awareness of possible insult that marks - and marrs - so many of the unfolding exchanges of power and influence in the great land of Rokugan.

His face is swiftly schooled to impassivity once the conversation between cranes begins, and though he seems to... pause... when he is informed that he is not trusted to accompany his companion further, he at least understands - family is, and remains family after all, and it can only be a matter of time before he is a simple wave-man once more.

"From your family I took the charge of seeing to your safety, to your family I now return it." he murmurs without any noticable sign of discontent, any that may exist hidden in that most useful of all courtly gestures, the face-concealing bow of assent.

Of course, that could equally be read as a retirement speech - it all depends on what's going on in that mysticism-addled mind of his, after all - Shugenja deal with nice, sensible spirits and politicians deal with nice, predictable human beings. Spending too much time grappling with the lore of Shinsei is just asking for trouble.

"It is settled then," Tsukiko pronounced, her voice carrying clearly across the room.  "Sakura-san, if you would follow me, I shall present you to the Taisa.  If you will excuse us both," she said, turning to each of those who were to stay behind before bowing.  She paused for a moment by the sliding doors before they were opened by a servant, waiting in the corridor for such a purpose.  Tsukiko stepped out of the room, the silk of her kimono rustling as she moved, the tiny steps she took making her seem as though she were gliding rather than walking.

"I apologize for my rudeness, but I wish to clean the road from myself, and perhaps familiarize myself with the city," he says, straightening.  "If you will excuse me."  He bows again, before leaving the room.

Sakura looked at Kedo for a moment. She wanted to say something, but what could she say? Deciding that this was a case where saying nothing was better than saying something, she merely bowed too him. Not too deep a bow, lest he be treated above his station; neither too shallow a bow, lest he take insult.

Daidoji Sakura turned and followed her cousin to the Taisa. Sakura seemed to be lost in thought, though it was apparent that she was paying attention to her surroundings as well.

The bow is of course returned to the appropriate degree - if his manners are not as perfectly polished as those of a Crane courtier (and whose are?) they are at least adequate to the task of showing respect where respect is deserved.

But that leaves the gray-clad swordsman stood by himself in the middle of the room and somewhat at a loss for the first few moments, until the suggestion of Bayushi Kenji takes route and he is reminded once more, as he should not need to have been, that the road grime stains his skin and he can, when he thinks of it, smell himself and the hard travel he has undertaken.

"I also should seek to undo what the road has done to body and spirit, lest I offend without intending." he states before looking to the senior remaining host in the room, "If I may?"

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

In silence, the two Daidoji moved through the corridors.  Tsuri-andon, hanging from the ceilings, provided a little extra light in the inner corridors which were otherwise devoid of decoration.  As they reached the top of one flight of stairs, Daidoji Tsukiko turned unexpectedly and leaned forward so that her lips were close to Sakura's ear.

"I think that perhaps it may be best not to mention the... situation of the Lion to anyone other than those who need to know, Sakura-san," Tsukiko advised in hushed tones that carried to the Daidoji shugenja's ears alone, an implication hidden in the words that she might be considered one of those favoured few.  "Panic caused by less restrained tongues can have unimaginable consequences.  I am certain that you, clever Sakura-san, understand this."  The admonishment was spoken in deceptively calm tones and in such a way that no offense could be called against the courtier, but it was present none the same.

With as much suddenness as she had begun to address her younger cousin, Tsukiko turned away once more, leading Sakura to the doorway which led to the compound's battlements.

Sakura smiled. It was an understanding smile, but one that was not too gentle.

"If you think those revelations would cause panic" she whispered in reply "then wait until you hear what I have to tell the Taisa."

Sakura followed her escort to the battlements, keeping her silence as was her place. It would be understood, of course, that whatever Sakura had to say could not be reported properly on the battlements.

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

"Then I am certain, wise Sakura-san, that you will think better than to speak of either matter within earshot of those who might have less resilient dispositions than ourselves." Tsukiko in an equally polite manner, the force behind her words thinly veiled with pretty words.

By the Fortunes!  This girl has less sense than Saboru-kun!  Is she so oblivious to the harm she might cause? Tsukiko thought to herself, whilst maintaining so calm a visage upon her face that none might know the truth of the thoughts which raced through her mind.  She is young yet, though.  Perhaps it is inexperience rather than lack of forethough which allows such words to pour from her lips?  The courtier reasoned charitably, trying to give Sakura at least some benefit of the doubt.

Reaching the doorway, Tsukiko knelt and slid it open in one fluid movement before standing once more and passing over the runners and out onto the sheltered porch.  She paused, removing the indoor slippers from her feet and selecting some spare outdoor shoes that had been left on the engawa for those who had travelled through the house to get to the battlements.

"If you would follow me, Sakura-san, then we shall see if Taisa Daidoji Ryu is inspecting today's drills.

[OOC: Yes, Tsukiko is a little bit full of herself when it comes to courtly behaviour.  Oh, and Saboru is her younger brother]

Kenji followed the ladies for a short time before his own path took him out of the house and into the streets beyond.  The crowds made it easy enough to disappear, even for one such as him.  Kenji made his way to the trade quarter, looking for a shop owned by a friend of his uncle.  It had been some time since he had heard from his family, and he wanted to send a letter to his uncle.

"I do what I must, Tsukiko-san."

Sakura followed wordlessly, considering her options and plans once again. Sometimes she wished that she had the tactical foresight of a Battlemaster, but such was not her calling. So when she found herself without the proper knowledge she was forced to rely on others ... even when others would rather not be relied on.

She slipped on the shoes provided for her and followed Tsukiko outside to the battlements. Sakura looked around, taking in the battlements.

Refreshed from the road, Bayushi Kenji has a little time to personalize his quarters beyond the writing desk, futon, wall hangings, and tea set which mark the hospitality of the Crane.

Kenji sits before the writing desk, scratching away at the paper, attempting to form something of the jumbled emotions in his head.  He growled in frustration as he crumpled his latest attempt and let it fall to the floor.  In a battle, his head would have been calm, like a mirror pond, but when he thought of Kanue-chan everything was a jumble and so confusing.  He mumbles under his breath as he dips the quill into the inkpot and starts again.

"Rather the converse, I should think," Tsutomu laughs, losing himself in the joy of the sword dance, "but this mortal coil has its own unique lessons to teach us," he grins, his weapons lashing out to strike or deflect, "and I, for one, would learn them all before passing out of this realm into the next!"  Stance, technique, and form all fall by the wayside in this perfect moment.  Kakita's Perfect Cut and Mirumoto's Two Hands find unity in Kedo and Tsutomu's swordplay.

Around them, the audience falls silent, dazzled by their skill and struggling to follow the intricate patterns of their weapons.  It is to this sight that Satoru, Bayushi Kenji, Daidoji Sakura, and Daidoji Tsukiko emerge from the outskirts of the crowd.

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

"You would ask for a Kami's span of years?" inquires Kedo with perhaps a touch of humour as, inspired to the same degree as the Crane whom he obviously knows to have fallen so readily into friendly contest, he blurs from one form to the next - where the Kakita style provides an edge in reaction speed and perfection of form, Kedo matches it with the economy of motion and willingness to step outside the bounds of technique and stance to seek advantage and the slide-clack of wood on wood redirection interspersed with not-quite parry reaches a high, stacatto beat before it subsides.

Kedo has the advantages of youth, Tsutomu that of experience - but even so chests are heaving and grins wide by the time that the simple, gray-clad Ronin steps back from the contest, leaving a moment for both to catch their breath before he bows respectfully to his host, the simple staves in his hands moving through one final arc to rest under his left arm as, for the first time he seems to become aware of an audience...

...and blinks. This, he was not expecting - but it in no way means that he should forget his manners and so he simply smiles at his sparring partner, young eyes bright like stars, "I find myself further indebted to you Tsutomu-san, I have missed such tuition on the long road."

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

Arriving on the edge of the crowd, Tsukiko was astonished to hear sincere and thoughtful comment from the Crane samurai on the unusual techniques being displayed and even more so to hear intelligence discourse on the merits of the practice duel coming from the ronin's lips.

Perhaps I shall be a little more open-minded about this ronin's nature.  Maybe good blood somewhere down his ancestors' lines has battled the innate, crude and lawless nature of the ronin to produce a man with whom it is not so dishonourable to associate. Tsukiko reasoned as she motioned for Sakura to follow her.

"Excuse me, noble Kakita....  Why thank you, thoughtful Asahina.... If you would be so kind, excellent Doji....  If we might pass you, courteous Daidoji." With compliments and requests to be let through pouring from her silver tongue, Daidoji Tsukiko managed to lead Sakura through the crowd to the front without so much as wrinkling her kimono against another samurai.

"And here is your bushi, Sakura-san," Tsukiko remarked in a quiet voice that only the other Daidoji could hear.  She smiled, pleased that the ronin had been found quickly.  She hung back a little, not wishing to be directly associated with the ronin in front of so many Crane.  Her eyes caught a moment on the other side of the crowd, a flash of blood red and black that could only belong to a member of the Scorpion Clan.

I wonder if we have found Bayushi-san as well.  Perhaps this ronin Kedo will prove to be useful afterall.

"Kedo-Kun."

Sakura's melodious voice addressed the Ronin in a clear, and contented tone. Not in a deliberately seductive fashion, however, for such things were best relegated to privacy. No, this was the voice of a woman who was aware of her beauty and quite comfortable with it. Unlike her companion, Sakura took no pains to distance herself from the Ronin. In fact, she did quite the opposite, making sure that everyone knew that the two were associated. No, that wasn't quite right -- Daidoji Sakura took great pains to make sure that everyone knew that he was associated with her.

"I'm afraid we have some work to do." There was not a trace of disappointment in her voice; if anything, she was quite happy with this turn of events. Sakura turned to the Kakita and dropped her head in a polite bow.

"Sensei*, thank you for taking such good care of my Yojimbo. It is very difficult for such an honorable bushi to be sent away from his charge ..."

[Sensei, in this case, is being used as a title of respect.]

As the Scorpion became more visible in the crowd, Tsukiko recognised the man as being one of the travellers that had arrived with Sakura.  The courtier met the samurai's eye and bowed respectfully.  It was only then that she realised Saturo stood beside the man and to him she directed a smile and a slightly lower bow.

We should find a tea house to discuss matters she decided as she turned to speak to Sakura once more.

"Sakura-san, I see that Bayushi-san and Saturo-san are standing on the other side of the crowd.  Perhaps we should join them and then move to a place where we can speak without the ears of others following our words," she suggested in a low voice, continuing, "I know of a most pleasant tea house in the courtier district, if you and the others would care to join me."

"It was my pleasure, Daidoji-san," Kakita Tsutomu bows, "he is a most astute student of the Tao and more than my equal with a blade."

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

There is an order in such things, and that order is best observed in order of precedence. Kedo flows out of his bow to Tsutomu and half-turns, bringing the approaching pair of beautiful crane ladies (and whom amongst their number is less than beautiful?) into his 'social arc', extending the hand not burdened with staves to indicate each individual as he makes introductions.

"Kakita Tsutomu, honoured teacher of the sword might I introduce Daidoji Tsukiko into whose presence I was briefly honoured to be escorted earlier this day and Daidoji Sakura, whom I was privilaged to be permitted to guard until I passed her into the protection of her family this morning." he begins, working from host (for this is the sensei's dojo) to native to guest in order as seems best, stressing gently that severence that was forced upon him from his charge and its consequences.

To ask a Yojimbo to simply stand outside, to remain out of earshot, to wait behind a door. Those are simple enough and understood, but as Kedo is the sort to whom it is natural to sleep outside his ward's door and likely holds to old, traditional forms... Well it is no small thing for him to then ask, as though Sakura's words were not spoken and with a smoothly respectful bow "Am I to understand that you wish to retain me once more as your Yojimbo, Daidoji-san?"

 Once more.

So gentle a telling-off from servant to served that it might as well not be delivered to most, but there nonetheless.

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

"Yes" Sakura replied. It was a simple enough reply, yet there were many layers. Sakura wished to retain Kedo as her Yojimbo, but would Kedo be willing to do what was required? No matter, Sakura knew of several ways that this "lowly ronin" could serve the Empire quite well.

"You have a sharp eye, Sensei" Sakura replied properly, "I will do my best to have him back here at the appointed time. If our duties permit.

It was no idle compliment. Here among the Crane most would view Kedo as nothing more than a "worthless ronin", but this Bushi was able to see what the others could not. But ... had Sakura fallen into their trap? Kedo was mostly likely correct, she should have taken him with and, when appropriate, simply made him stay out of earshot.

But what of the future?

Even as a Daidoji, Sakura's duties would require someone willing to suffer through many dishonors. Sakura's own sense of honor was nothing like those of the "traditional" Crane or Lion, nor would her duties permit it. But would Kedo be able, much less willing, to see this code of honor through?

"I believe that would be wise" Sakura replied to her companion, returning the latter's low tone, "plus I must make arrangements with the diplomats. It would not do to arrive unannounced in such circumstances."

Respect. Ours is not the mask of respect worn by the other clans, Kasumi-Chan. Ours is the respect that comes by knowing what all humans are capable of, from the Emperor down to the lowest Eta."

"Hai, Bayushi-san, which makes my task easier." Satoru said.

He steps forward to the group as the crowd begins to disperse. "Sakura-san, Daidoji-san, Wolf-san," he says with a a low bow that is held for a modest amount of time. "My Lord Doji Kusanagi asks for your pressence for a conference with Doji Kasurugi." Satoru rose from his bow, "If you would please follow me."

It seems clear that while Satoru used the word "ask" this is not so much a question as an honorable way of saying you will come with me. Satoru knew Kusanagi would accept no excuses for any party to not be present at this meeting.  Satoru waited for a moment for his words to sink in and then headed off to Kusanagi's household.

Kedo spoke the words himself 'Honour is what you know of yourself' - it does not lie in arbitrary action or word, but rather in a certainty of purpose and conviction that can only come from self-examination. When one is Yojimbo, one extends part of ones honour, ones self-worth to the protection of another.

It is no light thing to carry, even a share of a Ronins thin veil of integrity.

Making his farewells with Tsutomu, though perhaps a tad surprised at the sudden and inexplicable rush (that comes of course, from his regret at their being no time for tea and his distasteful awareness that fierce exercise has undone much of the good his earlier bath had done him) Kedo simply falls into place alongside and one pace behind Daidoji Sakura, his swords once more resting neatly on his hip.

It has at least been a full morning.

"This is Doji Kasarugi, daimyo of Toshi Ranbo," Kusanagi announces after bows are exchanged, "this is Doji Akibieden, gunso of our armies and veteran of the last Lion assult during the Clan War, and this is Asahina Jiro, student of the Monkey Clan Bushi School."

"Now, what is all this I hear about a Lion army on our door step?" the older Crane statesman growls, tapping his palm with a rolled up scroll while Doji Kusanagi pours tea for everyone.  Observing the niceties is essential even during war--perhaps especially during war.

Tsukiko, who had moved to the opposite side of the group to Satoru when they had entered the room, bowed low to the more senior Crane samurai as the entered.  She remembered, soon after her gempukku several years before, having been brought into the presence of Doji Kasarugi when she had been a part of her great-aunt's entourage.  Still, she doubted he remembered a then insignificant courtier.

At Kasarugi's question to the new arrivals, Tsukiko's attention turned back to the shugenja and two bushi, waiting for them to speak.

Sakura bowed in the appropriate manner after the introductions. Apparently she wasn't without etiquette unless she wished it ...

"On the way here" she began, "we ran into one Miya Shiko was in a bit of trouble. We volunteered to escort her here and, since she was in a bit of a hurry, we decided to go through Lion lands."

"Once properly in the borders we were ... 'encouraged' to stick to the main roads. However, being urgent Imperial business and all, we decided to take a ... 'shortcut'. This shortcut took us by Ninkatoshi, where we discovered a rather alarming accumulation of Lion troops."

Sakura then indicated her Bushi "brethren".

"Kedo-Kun" she said indicating her Yojimbo, "is a master warrior known for his wisdom and honor. Kenji-San is trained in the Daidoji school and is will assist me wherever Kedo-Kun's honor will not allow him to tread."

She then looked to the Scorpion and nodded, a silent indication that he should continue.

A distinct lift of the eyebrow follows Daidoji Sakura's rather overblown introduction and the Ronin turns very slightly to give the words an ironic twist with his expression, obviously not sharing his companions apparently absolute faith in his abilities.

He does however bow likewise, making a point of managing to do so just a hair below each of those he recieves and he likewise remains silent - it would not do after all, to undercut Sakura by explaining how much she overstates his skills and reputation.

That sort of correction must come later, when it can be completed with discretion.

Akibieden studies the map as Kenji’s fingers move across it’s surface.

The implications are grave indeed, a large Lion force south of Tosh Ranbo could cut the fortress off from the rest of crane lands.  Any army sent to our aid would have to secure permission to march through the imperial lands along the coast to the palace of the emerald champion, then cross southern Phoenix lands to arrive from the east. Even if such negotiations could begin immediately the trip would take days longer. If a direct march was attempted the army would find itself surrounded and out flanked in lion lands. Considering a former Lion sits on the throne and his bride is the Phoenix mistress of void chances of securing the necessary treaties are slim.

Aki’s face lifts from the map as the Crane trained Scorpion finishes and looks to the senior clan members present. If they wish his assessment of the situation he will gladly offer it, but speaking is not a soldiers place.

Satoru glances down at the map, at once forgetting his retirement. His position here of advisor and teacher was both a blessing and a curse. On one hand he was producing smart, honorable warriors for the Crane. On the other hand he was a monk and his position was not on the battle field fighting with those he has trained. It pained him deeply. It would take an event much like the Clan Wars to stir a need for him to take the field of battle and the very thought made him chastise himself for thinking of a second conflict of that magnitude to effect the Empire.

Shaking his head, Satoru cleared his thoughts. As an advisor it may still be necessary to give counsel and so he must understand the situation like a battle ready Doji would.

Haikei Doji Kasarugi-dono, it reads.

I will be brief, though the verbosity of Winter Court fast approaches.  The Emperor's Right Hand, emboldened by one of their own upon the Jade Throne, believes that they may attack Toshi Ranbo wo Shien Shite Reigisaho with impunity, and by taking it just before the onset of Winter, may hold and fortify it for the entirety of the Season.  By citing reconstructive needs they have withdrawn many of their soldiers from the Imperial Army to build this assault force.  Be assured that Toturi-sama does not endorse this rash act of war, though there is little he may do to prevent it as war between the Great Clans has always been their perogative.  I hope that this message reaches you before it is too late.

Otomo Hatsuharu

Interestingly," Doji Kasarugi says, raising an eyebrow at Daidoji Sakura, "shortly after receiving this missive Daidoji Ryu asked permission to send a scout troupe to the south to 'confirm a report'.  I denied his request, of course.  If the situation is as dire as this letter seems to indicate we will need every hand here to hold the City."

Sakura's "face" fell for a brief moment. It seemed that her intuition was correct once again in allowing the Imperial to live; the message to the Lord of Toshi Ranbo would not have been delivered, however the damaging one would have anyway. It also went far toward explaining why the Imperial was willing to be "sneaky".

"Doji-Dono" She began with some vigor, "Kuwanan-Dono has entrusted me with forging a treaty, preferably an alliance, with the newly returned Scorpion Clan."

"Both Kuwanan-Dono and myself feel that such an alliance will have a tremendous importance to both Clan and city -- as well as the Empire as a whole."

It seemed that Daidoji Sakura would be immersed in battle once again. She wondered briefly if she should focus her immediate efforts on warfare, but then dismissed it. No, she would be best used as a spy and saboteur.

'Our Bushido is not like theirs Kasumi-Chan'" her sensei had once said, 'Remember the old saying: youth and bravado is no match for old-age and treachery.'

Uncharacteristically, Kedo seemed to ignore Sakura's question as he looked at the map and the indicated dispositions upon it, his brow furrowing ever so slightly in what begins as puzzlement but rapidly becomes insight, an insight that only grows as he steps forwards from his position beside the Crane shugenja and extends a finger to sketch semi-circular arcs on the map, delineating the known Lion positions.

"There are flaws, here and here." he remarks in that patient, thoughtful tone as he indicates the far west of the 'line' with those smooth gestures, "Their general will have read Akodo. I would look for an additional force, not less than one third to one half the size of the one marked here, likely no larger than it, arrayed somewhere here." - again he indicates a general area of the map covering many miles of terrain, "And coordinated to fall upon the city in unison with the first, most especially if you should sally."

Surprisingly, he seems to have a fair idea whereof he speaks.

This fellow just keeps coming up with depths, doesn't he?

His voice sounds as if he is speaking to himself, "They will stand in our fields and curse our names until we come out to face them. We may hold this place if we force them to fight on the walls and in the streets, but they will call us cowards and shame the name of our clan." His voice begins to raise as he looks to his lord, "I was here when last the enemy was thrown back, the Didoji stood before the sons of Akodo with their Matsu brides and struck them down upon the fields of their ancestors. I will stand where you wish me to stand lord, and die with my kinsmen in glory.”
His gaze suddenly shifts to meet the eyes of Sakura-san, “You may treat with the lion and the scorpion, this may buy us time and allies but in the end the blood of the Crane must mingle with that of the Lion. We have placed ourselves like a stone in their sandal. How can they continue to walk in such a way, must they not address the stone to cast it aside, or if it has become too imbedded cast aside the sandal itself?  Unless we strike at them the Lion will come time and again and he will retake what was his or destroy it.”

Sakura's smile turned cold as she regarded the Doji warrior.

"Do not mistake me for a pacifist, Doji-San" she finally replied with some measured intensity. "I have said nothing about the Lion."

"There is more going on here than a simple Land grab. Kuwanan-Dono is more than aware of the Lion treachery and is preparing for it as we speak. I am neither Bushi nor Clan Lord, nor do I know what he knows. But I do know this."

Sakura leaned in a bit to intensify the words that were coming.

"The Mantis seek to unseat us in the courts. The Lion seek to unseat us on the field of battle. Meanwhile an ancient enemy, one that makes the Dark Forces of the Clan War seem insignificant, rears its ugly head head."

Sakura's voice lowered in volume, but raised in intensity.

"If we lose this city, we may very well lose the Empire."

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

"We should seek, as Sakura-san suggests, to strengthen ties with those to whom a Lion victory would be an unwelcome event."  Tsukiko refrained from using the term 'allies'; she saw an agreement with the Scorpion as being temporarily beneficial but she, like most Crane courtiers, knew that constant vigilance would be needed when working together with the Underhand.

"Perhaps a neutral party should try to dissuade the Lion from their present course?  Even a temporary delay as the Lion listen to the case put before them would be of use to the forces fortifying the city." Her gaze turned to the monk who stood opposite for an instant; she did not believe the Lion would be able to attack those who had supposedly given up their Clan allegiances without losing face and bringing shame upon the names of the Lion Clan families.

"In the mean time, others of us can work to forge ties between Scorpion and Crane.  Not to mention our ever steadfast allies, the Phoenix.  If a long siege presents itself, then perhaps such ties can bring allies to our aid and the Lion might then me surrounded on both sides."

Satoru regards the exchange with little emotion but his eyes and ears take in everything. "Tsukiko-san, you believe an old one armed monk can persuade the Lion?" his tone and smile implied a lighter tone than was currently being expressed. "If my Lord wishes it I shall serve as his voice or merely as the voice of peace in this instance.  I have not stared at a Lion army arrayed against me in sometime. It would be exhilirating." With the last bit said, Satoru's eyes grow distant for a moment before refocusing and turning to his Lords to see what they wished.

Sakura's smile softened with Doji's words.

"You have not shamed me, Musha-San*" she replied with a gentle forcefulness. "Were this any other time and any other place this would probably be just another simple conflict between Lion and Crane."

"I know my limitations, but because of this I also know where to search for allies. I have my reasons for entreating the Scorpion to aide us. I also have my reasons to expect that they will do so -- not for our good, but for the good of the Empire. They will not march to our aide here, nor do we want them to, but I believe that they will help. Or, to paraphrase Kuwanan-Dono, to at least not hurt."

"However, speaking of my limitations" Sakura continued, turning to both the Courtier and the Lord of the city, "I wonder if it could be arranged for me to acquire a spell-scroll or two from the Crane Shugenja of this city? I doubt very much that the tactics that we used at the Day of Thunder will be of any use here."

"Nothing fancy" Sakura continued, "just something to make me a bit more useful in this kind of battle. The Lion are known for being ridiculously stubborn with these sorts of things."

[1) a cutesy "Mr-Warrior".
         2) I'm thinking something along the lines of Katana of fire or Yari of Air. Enough that if a Samurai or two comes her way she doesn't have to play the "helpless Princess" and stand there while Kedo and Kenji save her ....]

I am in your dept and that dept shall be repaid. Didoji Tsukiko-san is correct we must attack our enemies on all fronts.  I have been behind the spear so long I know no other way for myself,” looking to Satoru-san, “but I have not forgotten the lessons of our lady Doji, allies and cunning words are no doubt great weapons in any arsenal.”

Kedo seemed to miss the possibility of insult in the words of the rash Crane - or perhaps more accurately did not sense any deliberate desire to offend, and so remained at his post, studying the map as though it were the territory, possibilities and patterns flowing through his mind as though he were selecting the kata through which to experience a sword or the ore which may one day become a blade.

He's a very... intense... young man this one. "Might I be permitted to know some small amount regarding the forces arrayed in the defence of this city?" he inquires humbly of whomever seems to be most likely to provide an answer, his tone suggesting that he's thinking his way through a problem, rather than simply asking for the sake of asking.

"You are most modest, Satoru-san.  But my judgment is made for two reasons; first, being a monk you are more likely to be listened to than any man or woman who have direct allegiance to the Crane.  Second, as one who understands the way of combat, I am certain you would be more likely to make the Lion see sense than I would.  Tsukiko spoke with great sincerity; her respect for Satoru knew no bounds and she was certain that bloodletting could be kept to a minimum by a few carefully placed words.

"While I have no doubt of your valor, Satoru-san, Daidoji Tsukiko-san," Doji Kusanagi replies ernestly, "under no circumstances are you to attempt to face down the Lion under these circumstances.  If the our enemies have gone to such trouble to put together such an assault, I doubt that even the voice of Shinsei himself would be heard.  Furthermore, we must remember that Toshi Ranbo must survive more than this one attack.  We will also soon be hosting Winter Court and I am loathe to throw away skilled and talented negotiators on what is likely to be a fruitless endeavor.  You may be of use here, however.

Daidoji Sakura-san has mentioned a possible arrangement with the Scorpion Clan.  While normally I would object to such a maneuver, anything that will aid in our survival is paramount.  On that same vein, these upstarts who call themselves the Mantis have also been mentioned.  While we have ambassadors to other Clans, the Mantis are a fresh face to our Courts, and as an unknown quantity, they also have value to us.  These tasks, and any others you may see fit to take on, I leave to you.  Though,"
he smiles wryly, "I would prefer that you keep me informed.  I am going to discuss with Daidoji Ryu and the other Taisa what forces we have available to us and what forces we may muster," he says not acknowledging Kedo's question while answering it at the same time, "at last count, we had some 5000 troops--both ashigaru and samurai--available, though that number may have changed recently.

"The Asahina librarians will asceed to your requests, Daidoji Sakura-san," he says, almost as an afterthought, "within reason, of course."

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

"As you wish, Doji Kusanagi-sama," the lightness went from Tsukiko's voice and she was once again the cool, unflappable courtier.  To have brokered a truce between the Lion and the Crane, even a temporary one, over Toshi Ranbo would have ensured that the name of Daidoji Tsukiko would have been spoken on the lips of thousands of Rokuganis for centuries and would have brought great honour to her family.  And yet, it was a fools wish, an impossible task, so she would acquiesce to her superior's wishes.

"I would suggest that we speak to the Scorpion first to gauge their reaction, especially as we have one of their own to assure them of the legitimacy of our proposal." Tsukiko nodded in the direction of Bayushi Kenji.  "Once the outcome of that is known, then we can speak with the Mantis.  I would prefer a little more time to consider the unknown quantity that is the clan from the islands."

Re: Chapter 2 - Violence Behind Courtliness City

Sakura bowed low to the city governor and thanked him. It was no small favor that she asked, yet she knew how critical things would be in only a very short time.

"The Mantis" Sakura said to Tsukiko, once the formalities were completed, "will aide whomever pays them the best. Of course they do not always prefer to be paid in money, but even still ..."

Sakura took a deep breath and let it out slowly. As far as she was concerned the Son of Storms should be rotting in a deep pit, not the Lord of a Great Clan. "I will aide you with them if you wish it, though I must confess that I am probably not the best person to do so."

Then a thought came to her.

"Lord Kusanagi?" Sakura interjected quickly, "With whom should I be coordinating with regarding my place in the coming war? Would that be Ryu-Taisa?"

With the exception of herself and the Bayushi, there were only "properly" trained bushi in the room. It would probably be best to allow someone who understood her abilities on a more personal level figure out where she would do the most good.

Kedo pauses for a few moments after his request was made, only to be snapped back to the here-and-now as an uncomfortable silence greets it, punctuated by the honourable debate of his betters on matters of greater significance than mere numbers of spearmen and bushels of arrows.

Without drawing further attention to himself, the gray-clad man draws back one step and then a second, becoming once more Daidoji Sakura's silently protective shadow, for all that there is no threat here that mere steel can hope to turn aside.

After all, what is it to a Wave Man if a Crane city should fall?

And if such speed is necessary then I and whomever wishes to come with me shall speak to the Mantis. I fought with them during the Clan War when Doji Chomei petitioned them for aide.  As for their 'unknown' facets, Shinsei says 'One must learn to see what is to be seen and to see though what others wish you to see' with him as my guide and intentions pure I will take the necessary steps." Aki points to several locations on the map of the fortress, notably the parade grounds and the gate to the inner keep.

"Then it is settled?" Tsukiko looked around at those assembled.  Myself, Kenji-san and Sakura-san," Tsukiko paused as her eyes fell on the gray clad figure who had moved closer to the shugenja, "and the ronin Kedo that request an audience with the Scorpion clan while Satoru-san and, perhaps, Akibieden-san visit the Mantis to discern the likelihood of gaining their help."

She looked at each of the bushi in turn before speaking once again.  "I know you will all wish to see to your places in protecting the city, but I ask that you allow these few hours to help those of us who fight without a sword."

Tsukiko found herself turning more to Bayushi Kenji than any of the others as she finished speaking; she was beginning to see the wisdom in Sakura's suggestion of forging some form of alliance with the Underhand of the Emperor if Toshi Ranbo was to be kept from the grasping hands of the lion.  The Scorpion might be more inclined to consider the matter if one of their own blood supported it, permanent guest though he was of the Crane.

A slow smile crept across Sakura's face ...

Kedo offers a small, smooth bow of gratitude towards Doji Akibieden, one that allows his face to drop out of line of sight for just long enough to allow him to school his features to serene immobility once more.

'Once more pressing business is handled' has the elegent ring of a polite refusal about it after all, and it is always ungracious to press on in such matters, particularly when it seems that there are other duties to perform rising moment by moment, not leas that of ensuring his overclever ward returns to the city unharmed.

It will be, no doubt a long and tiring errand - but one that may offer some small chance to see the works of Akodo put into practice by those who know his legacy best, and there is no small reward in that for the thoughtful Bushi...

When he rises again, there is a faint and ever so slightly detached smile on Kedo's face, that of a man anticipating some abstract future pleasure or insight.

He really isn't all there you know.

‘if you have another path, then do not hesitate to follow it’, perhaps there is more to this girl after all. She certainly is different than the peace loving talisman bearers of the library here. Also she seems to have this ronin well trained, I wonder is there more to their relationship than meets the eye. Well she is not the only one to have been trained in the Diadoji style of thought. A Magician, Ronin, and a Scorpion bring news of an imminent attack and promptly offer their aid in battle. Spies….No….the lion is not so devious.

The tea cup in Aki’s hand does little to hide the look of concentration even raised to his face.  Returning the empty cup to the table he says, “May the seven fortunes bless our efforts these next days.” We are going to need it.

[Private to Asahina Jiro: Hello Jiro. There are two options to write in blue or any other color.

1st you must use these brackets < > and place the type of formatting (ie coloring or bolding, etc within) so if I want blue I will type:
<blue>This is written in blue</blue>
to give me:
This is written in blue

2nd While you are typing or editing a post look to the bottom of the text window. There will be a list of buttons, starting with bold then Italic. Second in from the right is the "styled text" option. Click it with words highlighted and it will turn the highlighted blue. If you have nothing highlighted a window will pop up allowing you to insert any text that you wish to be blue.
Experiment with either option and remember you can always hit the preview button before you post to see how it will turn out. :)
