Happy New Year one and all!

I was fortunate enough to cross the pond with my mob on Dec 28 and spent a week in NYC. I think -5C was the warmest it got and attending the Giants-Redskins game on New Year's Eve was particularly challenging (and a win for Big Blue! What cold!?). Had a great time and managed to get out the day before the winter storm hit.

Back to rainy Scotland, although we appear to have brought the cold back with us: was -5C here this morning!

We actually got a bit of snow here in Busan this morning. It nearly melted off after it stopped, but then it cooled down again and some of it's sticking. This hasn't happed in at least four years, maybe five. We've had flurries that didn't stick from time to time the past few years, but it's the first time for my younger boy to play in real snow.

If we're being serious, I'm a fan of Leonidas. When Xerxes offers life to those of his 300 Spartans and associated other Greeks who would give up their arms, Leonidas says, "Come and take them." (Also the Spartan Mother's/Wife's blessing "Come home with this shield or upon it.")

For the less serious, you can't go wrong with the farewell of "Have fun storming the castle!"

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

Heads up!

Looks like RPOL is moving servers soon and we will be offline for a while...

link to a message in another game

quote:
Please be aware that we will "shortly" be moving RPoL to a shiny new server in a different location (Silicon Valley, California).

RPoL has been running off it's current software for about nine years now.  The operating system is out of date and no longer supported.  The hardware was upgraded once, three years ago, but the hard drives are the original and one has failed.  It's time to move to a newer operating system and newer equipment.

Our current host (NetDepot) has been very good to us but pricing has unfortunately increased for a modern equivalent of what we currently have.  Additionally virtualisation allows for a dedicated-like experience at a fraction of the cost.  In this instance 19/52s of a fraction, or around 36.5% of our current cost (if you want to be all user-friendly about it).

We'll be going from 3 GB memory to 8, a faster CPU (though less cores), and storage will be nice and fast on SSD (rather than 9 year old spinning disks).  Initial testing is promising and the new server looks very fast (up to 4 times faster for a very complex page), though take that with a grain of salt as it's not under any load at the moment.

Due to the fact we have to move a lot of data between locations there will be some downtime while the new server is updated with the latest from the current.  I will do dry runs before the final migration to give you a better estimate of the time it will take.

I'm not sure when exactly.  NetDepot have informed us they need to move our server in the next few days so it'd be nice to get it done by then, but I don't think I'd have sufficient testing by then to be comfortable to pull the trigger.

Not me, but then as a druid, I've got a class level limit no different from a human :)  I don't usually play demi's in 1e for just that reason, and I don't like to play thieves which the only other demi- with no limit.  I'm tempted to try a pure thief dwarf some time as I had a monk henchman who got reincarnated and ended up a dwarf f/t which was quite impressive as a trapfinder/dungeoneer.

Because few would choose to play a human otherwise. Partial list of advantages for non-humans:

Dwarves: Bonus to saving throws, increased CON (at expense of CHA (often a throwaway stat—maybe only one member of a party needs high CHA if the game features bargaining, etc.))

Elves:  +1 attack, see in dark

Gnomes: Magic resistance, see in dark

Half-Elves: Inferior to Elves

Halflings: Magic resistance, see in dark

Half-Orcs: See in dark, increased STR and CON (at expense of CHA)

The in-game rationale was that because of their extended lives and natural racial traits, demi-humans would neve commit the focused effort that mortality and humanity's natural advantages created. Therefore, they would "top out" at a certain point, just as I'll never play basketball as well as Scotty Pippin could, no matter how much I practice.

It's an unpopular idea these days but it works both in game and out-of-game where the rationale, as noted by Shani, was game balance.

One other advantage of being human is access to all classes.

Multiclassing options are also benefits of demi-humans. Half-elves may be inferior to full elves in regards to special abilities, but elves can't be cleric/fighter/magic-users or cleric/rangers for example.

Humans can actually dual class, but not in the same way as a multi-classed Demi-human can.  First they proceed in one occupation and then they change to the second a bit like a bard which is quite a powerful character class at upper levels.  I must admit I haven’t seen many dual classed humans or bards in my time.  Perhaps a dual classed human is just a weaker more time consuming way of multi-classing?

I don't care for level limits myself, I'd rather give humans some advantages to balance against demi's.  Bonus to ability scores (UA Method V for humans only gives an average of about 11 more points than Method I, but doesn't allow placing scores. I've seen some pretty bad characters come out of that, so I'm not sure if it's really any better.)  And/or XP bonus or penalty.  I usually just charge double xp for levels after level limits.

But I'm not advocating any of that here, I'm happy to play as is.  Just saying.

...

The only human Dual Classing I've seen is low level fighter->magic-user, which is pretty good, mostly just for the HP and ability to use swords and bows.  Oh and a Bard once, but he wasn't really any good, and he started his character at a level to be a Bard.

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

As I understand it, it would go something like this: X becomes a, say, 7th-level thief. He then decides to become a magi user. So our neophyte is mixed in with far more capable party members. How would the GM share out XPs? The description is on p. 33; I found two-classing ridiculous on its face.

XP bonuses, maybe on a sliding scale*, would be an advantage, but would require careful consideration. Also one-two stat points on creation; it one only, then +1 to some stat with -1 to another. (But then, having never-improving stats is something I dislike about DND 1 and 2.)

*Not sure of this, but demihuman advantages are a constant, but XP bonuses may lead to increasingly wide differences.

Yes the methodology is cumbersome and restrictions severe, but again it's probably tested for game balance.  If it wasn't quite hard it would be common for humans to do it.  I'm dubious as to whether it would be as good a combination as multi-classing and being demi-human.

I see no reason why the DM wouldn't still share out XP in the same way.  It means the 'new' class would progress quickly at least initially.  We all know it is not uncommon for some in the party do more than others, so as long as the character was role played to their ability and didn't just sit back and do nothing I don't see a need to share out XP differently.  There is often a mix of levels in this game and Jeff shares out the XP evenly.

Yeah it's been like that for sometime Carl - since the hosting site changed a while back I think.

Use the Game Map link at the top of the page next to the Dice Roller instead.  You'll probably need to hit the VIEW button to bring the map up.

With the refreshments and the decorations well in hand he calls out, "Have we got a bard in the house yet?

A tall thin man looks around, the sights of the bar are quite foreign, and he looks quizzically around.  He slides a large conical straw hat off the top of his head, and down to let it hang on his back.  He is dressed in a light cotton robe, with a pair of wooden millstone handles tucked into his belt.

His eyes flit from person to person, at the kaleidoscope of figures and his eyesbrows raise watching the sparkling ball start to spin.

He approaches the bar, and the man with the strange colored hat.   "Sake?" he asks, not sure if he will even be understood.

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

New topic:

I read a discussion on the IntarWeb where somebody said (about AD&D) that an 8 for a statistic makes a character unplayable. I laughed out loud here at the keyboard. I had a player here many moons ago that, let's just say, was more experienced with other editions of D&D than AD&D, and when he didn't like his scores, asked me to point-swap up to an 18. When I said no, he asked to point-swap his lone 8 away. Considering this game has had characters with 5s and even a 4 in Strength, played perfectly as a sickly magic-user, I would never complain about an 8 (or lower) of my own.

Now I'm in a new campaign with my buddies in a face-to-face game that took a few years off. For when I'm not DMing, the other DM wants us to roll 4d6, drop low, reroll all 1s. Now I'm really not worried one way or another, but with a 6 minimum, you don't have much to scare you.

How many of you guys and gals here are playing with an 8 or lower? And for my own curiosity, what's the lowest score here at the moment?

I posted the probability question about 4d6, drop low & re-roll 1s, on dragonsfoot, and the resident non-Luddites pointed me to this website, and this readout.

Probability distribution:

Value % = % ≥
6 0.160
7 0.640
8 1.600
9 3.360
10 6.080
11 9.280
12 12.640
13 15.040
14 16.000
15 14.560
16 11.200
17 6.720
18 2.720

Average value = 13.4336
Spread = 2.36828863106
Mean deviation = 1.9399936

http://topps.diku.dk/torbenm/troll.msp and there's an option for 4d6 drop and reroll 1s.

You might notice that the odds for an 8 or lower are 2.4%!  Wow! And the odds for a fifteen or higher are a tad above 35%!!

Also, from anydice.com, another poster told me that, "What you're really rolling with reroll all 1s forever is 4d5 drop low +3" Dang! Don't ever ask me to re-roll 1s, except for on hit point rolls.

Interesting stuff.

Uthecar has a 6 intelligence and I find him an interesting character to play because of it.  I purposely selected the lowest die roles for his intelligence to see if I could do it justice.

In another game, I play a character with 4 scores effectively 18 or greater, but that character has developed over 11 years of gameplay.

While we probably don't usually want a low score, I haven't found a high score to really be all that important to enjoyment in Rpol.

Looking at my own gaming experience, good DM's create challenges and high scores usually mean your opponents will become nastier quicker.

Wehostan's got an 8 Wisdom, and that explains why he often gets suckered into acting as party Fighter (instead of us recruiting a new dedicated Fighter) and nearly getting beaten into submission by giant frogmen, magic-missiled by wizards, etc. He's got a 15 Dex, but only a 12 Str.

For Gwire, I rolled average to well, he's got a low score of 11 Int but a high score of 14 Wis.

Chie gets to be a Kensai (I was planning to play a Wu Jen but when I got those rolls, had to accept the challenge!) because the dice roller was kind on that day. Her Str and Dex are both 16, and her low score is Int 10.

I totally understand why people who started with 3E or later editions worry about low stats, though. Those editions make EVERYTHING dependent on one stat modifier or another. All attacks, all saving throws, all skill checks... I do enjoy playing newer editions, but think people worry too much about the stats when they do and don't focus enough on clever play.

I rolled very well.  I have no bonuses to speak of, but no drawbacks either.  My low roll is Wis 10.  Which makes me perfectly suited to act as Wehostan's guiding light!

Someone posted over on DF the 'average' character you get with 4d6 in another thread... All I remember is that you'd have a 16 on the top and an 8 on the bottom.  I don't know how they came up with that.

Holly's lowest score is 11 in Int.  But she's got 2 15s tied for her highest score.  I personally prefer much higher scores (all 18s anyone? :D) but don't mind a low score to give a character some character.

On the other hand I've seen really high scores lead to fatal hubris.

Is that the absent-minded professor Alexi, or would that be high intelligence and low wisdom?

Hauraki has an 8 Charisma, which I guess is just below average but has survived pretty well as a fighter with a 15 strength.  Luckily there are plenty of magic items to make up for low strength, though Jeff I can't help but notice you haven't dished out that Titan girdle that he desperately deserves.  Shut up!!  There is such a thing and there is still time.

Roland has a Wisdom of 8, and his highest is a DEX of 16, but I think that includes the +1 boost for a halfling.

I don't have my PHB handy,  but I'm pretty sure you need a 7 or lower in any of the abilities to get a penalty,  and a 15 or 16 or higher to get any bonuses,  meaning there's not much difference between an ability score of 8 or 14 (except for spell casters).  I've realized that unlike other editions,  your ability scores in AD&D primarily determine what class you can become.

That's a good point, Roland, though occasionally we've probably all seen ability scores used as saving throws as well.  I've had my character need to make a saving throw versus Intelligence to solve puzzles for instance, but I guess that might just be me.

In general true. With some, though, it depends on how lenient the BM is.

PHB, p. 9: "...it is usually essential to the character';s survival to be exceptional (with a rating of 15 or above) in no fewer than two ability characteristics."

In my experience, characters who don't meet this (or at least have some 14s) have a tough time. Mages could be an exception if they're protected...like artillery. Or clerics if they exist to heal.

Gather 'round children as I tell the tale of the Rat God's Tomb and his Gem of Power! How Errol lead a group of adventurers into the unknown tunnels and guided them through untold horrors to this ultimate treasure. Where Errol defeated the Guardian (with a little help from other, minor characters of the story), and plundered the gem, being instantly transformed into the Rat God himself! Errol (and maybe one or two other inconsequential companions) went on to defeat bandit hordes, single handedly defeating their master, and exploring far off ruins! Until that fateful day when the Rat God's essence evaporated into the ether... and Errol again became a One Eyed Gnome.

Errol had a portrait made. It exists in RPOLs portrait library, mcm100 - Male Creature Monster, page 4.

(Actually the portrait already existed. I was just lucky enough to find it during my time as a rat-gnome).

I just found my dad's old issues of Dragon magazines, some game & companion adventures! Test of Warlords, The mines of bloodstone, swords of deceit. DM issues 152 to 165. Some Conan the Barbarian first prints from 160 to 179

My little girls are 16 and 10 (soon to be 11). It flies by.

Going back to the stats convo, Amalric has 16 STR and a 15 DEX (thanks to the elf bonus). He's almost super-powered by these standards.

My other character is Terin, who I considered making a Cleric/Ranger before settling on C/F/MU (because why not?). He has an 8 in CHA, so is quiet and lacks some confidence, but everything else is 13+, including 17 STR and 16 CON.

I've seen all kinds of rolls here. For the most part the best games have had the worst-rolled characters, and the worst games the best. IOW, its all about what you do with it, not what you get.

Nice find. I ripped out all the articles I wanted to keep and got rid of dozens of old copies eons ago. Still have some Dungeon Magazines buried somewhere.

Not sure how many DRAGON mags I have, was never a subscriber and they were sometimes difficult to find here in the UK. I do have the CD-ROM archive of the first 250 issues though, so no problem finding stuff!

Bought about 50 DUNGEON mags on ebay a year or two back for a pittance, and have almost every issue up to the dawn of 3E (which were of no interest to me beyond Rob Kuntz's Maure Castle issues).

Blech, I come and complain about no one posting then I drop off.  I own it, but here's my lame excuses anyway.  Long weekend (I don't post weekends, mostly due to my computer game addictions I don't even think about it.), which results in more cramming of the work day for the rest of the week, I'm just now caught up on everything else.

For my new players:

If you don't mind my asking, where are you located? I think it's terrific that I now play D&D with people from all over not only the U.S., but the world. If you don't want to share, you don't have to.

As I've said before, I come from just outside Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, U.S.A.

Veterans, only share if you want to - I know I bore you with this topic every now and again.

Thanks - this was the first convention for my gamer girl, and she had a good time, and was thrilled by the generosity of some folks there. My friend Dave gave her some original artwork of his (he gave some to everyone at that D&D table), and the 1st Ed. DM she played with gave us all four plastic minis each, all painted, as a thank you for playing in his game. We didn't win any of the items I put raffle tickets in for, but that's okay - a good time was had by all.

As a present to you all, everyone gives yourselves 250 XP per level. I know that raises some of you folks a level mid-adventure, which is fine. Just update your character or ask me if you have any questions.

Well this is stretching it but 10gp is meant to give you 1xp, so you could take out a loan.  There is some suggestion that gp that is easily gained isn't worth as much in XP as that which is discovered, so if you take out the loan through a financial institution which is a highly dangerous act it's bound to be worth more XP. :o)

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

I wrote this a couple of years ago after I was running a game at the Lake Geneva Game Store. Draven the ranger refused to enter melee, and I kept warning him he'd kill someone at point-blank range if he kept shooting into a melee.

Here's the next song Imre should sing:

"The Ballad of Last Month's Friendly Fire Incident*"
*sung to the tune of Bon Jovi's, "You Give Love a Bad Name"

Shot through the head, at point-blank range, Draven,
You give rangers a bad name.

Inside this dungeon, so dark, so cold,
We're beating down monsters and taking their gold,
But then those undead got a hold on me,
I'm trying and trying, but I can't break free!

So, the battle's nearly won,
DM tells you, "Don't roll a one,"
But you shot your bow, now the damage is done!

Shot through the head, at point-blank range, Draven,
You give rangers a bad name.
We told you, "Don't fire into a melee!"
You give rangers a bad name.
Yeah, you give rangers a bad name.

You thought you'd try again, or so you said,
The dwarf said, "You do, and I'll cut off your head!"
Then the evil magician, he got you good,
You hit the ground, dead, while he laughed through his hood.

(Mandolin solo)

Shot through the head, at point-blank range, Draven,
You give rangers a bad name.
We told you, "Don't fire into a melee!"
You give rangers a bad name.
Yeah, you give rangers a bad name.

(Chorus out)

Ha! I love it. A Bon Jovi tune was never put to better use.

I wrote a dwarven marching song for the time that my brother and I were running treasure hungry dwarves hanging out with a bunch of elf types. His was under the delusion that he was the uncrowned king of dwarves, and mine chewed on cigars and enabled my brother's delusion. The song was to the tune of "Heigh Ho" from Snow White, of course. Here's the two verses that I can still remember 35 years later.

Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho!
It's off to work we go!
With spell and shield
and swords we wield,
Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho!

Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho!
It's home from work we go!
No need to hurry
No dead to bury!
Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho!

I told myself I would only delete threads for a valid reason this time around. Well, one group exploded into different groups and lost four of the players that were in it, so away it goes. I did save what I wanted out of it this time, and the adventure it contained just might be played by another group in the future.

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

For my newer players who may not know, I also run a Star Frontiers game here on RPOL that's only been running since April. My usual modus operandi is to roll either here at home on my desk with my dice, or occasionally make a secret roll on the dice roller here and there, and the topic came up over there of trusting your DM's rolls.

One player said he wouldn't believe what I told him unless he saw it in the dice roller. Since he was the only one not cool with the idea, I'll share with you a little "DM's only," feature built into the dice roller, that I didn't have the heart to tell him about. My fellow GMs already know this - I can fudge, skew, or flat out call whatever die I roll as a GM.

Here's a fun thing - I'll roll up a human fighter.

12:55, Today: DMJSC rolled 100 using 1d100.  Exceptional Strength roll.

12:54, Today: DMJSC rolled 18 using 3d6.  Charisma.

12:54, Today: DMJSC rolled 18 using 3d6.  Constitution.

12:53, Today: DMJSC rolled 18 using 3d6.  Dexterity.

12:53, Today: DMJSC rolled 18 using 3d6.  Wisdom.

12:53, Today: DMJSC rolled 18 using 3d6.  Intelligence.

12:52, Today: DMJSC rolled 18 using 3d6.  Strength.

Wow! What are the odds??  ;^)

Anyway, I still use real dice here so I don't push everybody's rolls down the dice-roller too quickly. They did make it a lot longer over time so it does hold a lot of rolls, so you might see a roll here and there. But don't worry if you don't.

To Hauraki - Goruug had left the game, but reports of his demise turned out to be exaggerated. I had forgotten to change it, but now I don't think I will.

And, Stormrider, the Hall of Fame tracks characters who played here and then left after a goodly amount of time. Chances are if somebody drops before they reach 50 posts, they never make it to the board. And I have not put the dead characters up there either, as there have been and may yet be hard feelings when characters get killed. I always allow new PCs to be rolled up, but of those folks who may have found a cleric high enough to cast Raise Dead, nobody who attempted it has survived a resurrection roll. so every death in the game has been permanent.

That said, the odds of dying are much less than those of somebody dropping out of the game. I still only need both hands to count the dead characters in the game, while the HoF lists many more than that.  :^)

The two highest-level characters in this game are single-classed 7th, and one started the game with me, and the other joined me in that first few months. There are several single 6th, 5th and 5/4 multi-classed characters in the game, and then we move on through down the levels to the newest characters. So unless you die, the potential is there to get into the AD&D mid-levels.

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

Something that struck me recently, and I thought I'd throw it out here:

In all the face-to-face games of D&D or AD&D I've run over the years, I've very rarely drawn a map to help players visualize where they are - we use marching orders and standing orders, and if a character can't reach the combat, I'll let the player know. Our group's other DMs never used minis and maps either. It has helped us visualize inside our heads, if you will, what's going on rather than looking at D&D like a board game.

However, here in a play-by-post, in order to facilitate play, I developed my ASCII mapping style. My question is this. Does having a map made of squares and such dilute the 'inside your head' experience, and turn the game into a board game? I would hope that good players could still picture my descriptions without a map, but in pbp games, it seems like a map is needed most of the time unless I were to make each group make their own maps from my descriptions.

What do you guys and girls think?

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

If the dungeon is a puzzle to be solved, we need to map it. Normally, a player would do that, but showing the map to each other isn't as simple as holding up a piece of paper.

If the dungeon is a series of encounters to be defeated, the map is just baggage. It just uses up your prep time, which you could better use for designing encounters and convoluting the plot.

So, the answer depends on what kind of dungeon this is. Does a railroad run through it, or are we lost in a puzzle box?

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

This is just my 2cp worth.  I come here to write and roleplay, not to have difficulty trying to draw maps.

I think what some DM's tend to forget with mapping, is that this is a PBP game.  It is not TT which in turn is different from RL.  Each medium is different and trying to make PBP exactly like TT is not always going to work.

Remember here some scenes can play out over months, compared to what might take hours TT and possibly only minutes in RL.  One of the reasons we all can rpol is that we can fit it into our days in chunks that work for each of us.  Those chunks are often a lot smaller than the chunks needed for TT and map visualisation or drawing.

See just to prove my point I went away and cooked the family dinner in between writing the last sentence and this one.

To answer your question with a rhetorical one of my own Jeff.  How long has the game been going and how many people have left the game complaining there was just too much mapping being supplied by the DM stealing away from their own creative experience?

Like Hauraki, I play on RPOL because I can squeeze a few minutes here and there rather than 8hrs on a Saturday.  Having the maps makes it easier to pop back in and still know where you are, because the room you were last in, might have been a month ago IRL

I feel differently about face-to-face play but the very asynchronous nature of RPoL makes DM-furnished maps a welcome element.

In my TT game, the DMs use maps and minis. Because I'm remote, I can's see it anyway so it doesn't matter to me. That and I'm perpetually lost in RL. I don't get too hung up on precise locations.

Chances are good I'll forget to check the map anyhow. XD

You'll learn soon enough if you haven't picked up on it yet that the realm is a giant sandbox for you to explore, with only the slightest of guidance here or there. (I dislike the term railroading, with regard to my own DMing at least, as it makes it seem like I don't give the players any choices - if anything I've been more guilty of providing too many options rather than too few.) So I try to help you by mapping what you want me to.

The only sin is saying, "the 12,000 post," when you should have said, "the 12,000th post." It is an extremely minor sin. Just say one "Hail Deneir" and you're square.

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

Hey everyone, I'm running a game here on RPOL which is a megadungeon exploration game, but in which each player controls an entire adventuring party. The system is Classic D&D, but with a few houserules that make it a bit more like AD&D (race and class are separate, and there are more than just the classic 4 classes).

Right now I only have one player, our good DMJSC, who gave the OK to advertise here. I could use two or three more.

If you're interested, pop over to Dungeon Callers: Treasures Serpents and Ruins and check out my system. If you like send me an RTJ.

Shameless plug here:

In Wehostan's game I am having a blast, though currently The Adventure Whores are soon to be rolling up their third replacement character (it's pretty brutal) but since you run a whole party, unless you TPK, you can always just roll up a new party member. Not that you get to slack off, either....

If you're a dungeon crawler at heart, check it out. Maybe we can meet and exchange map notes.  :^)

Hence why he's asking if you prefer a crossbow or a bow of some kind.

Under the caverned pyramids great Set coils asleep;
Among the shadows of the tombs his dusky people creep.
I speak the Word from the hidden gulfs that never knew the sun—
Send me a servant for my hate, oh scaled and shining One.

Yes, I wasn't halfway through listening to that, when Robert E Howard's famious Barbarian Conan came to mind.
A man could at one moment could quote things like this:

What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie?
I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky.
The subtle tongue, the sophist guile, they fail when the broadswords sing;
Rush in and die, dogs—I was a man before I was a king.

And then things like this:

"Crom!" he swore. "The thing's melted back into the foulness which bore it!" "
And even better:

Xaltotun, grand fakir of Nemedia: Dog of Acheron, I am returning to my kingdom, and I mean to hang your hide on a bramble.
CONAN.

That mix of excellent of tongue combined with all the fearceness of a born killer is sort of what I'm going for.

I'm old, too. Been playing AD&D for almost 40 years now. I added a few different games along the way but always stuck with AD&D. Luckily my friends and I got the band back together a while back and play face-to-face once a month. As for play-by-post, I run this game and a Star Frontiers game, and I play in two Basic D&D games, and that's enough online.

Amen to that! The SF game is getting quite interesting as of last Friday. Haven't checked in since then. Shame on me!

I have no clear recollection on when I started role playing. I think around 7th or 8th grade -ish, so probably 81-82 with the Red Box.

I started sometime between 77 to 80 I have a hard time pinning it down.  It was a birthday when I got Holmes Basic D&D. I think it was my 8th birthday which would've been 1977, but I could've sworn I had the chits with Holmes Basic D&D which would put me 1980 earliest so 11.  Unless it was Christmas which would make it 1979 and I would be 10.  The other reason I think it was '77 is I'm pretty sure the PHB hadn't even come out yet, I remember getting the MM and waiting for the PHB to come out.

It was 1980 for me (I was 12 or 13). My younger brother bought the Holmes Blue Book some time in the late 70s and although it was cool I never considered it my thing. A year or three later I started playing 1st edition AD&D, and my life changed forever - I wouldn't swap that for anything.

And yes, I haven't been around here much the last few months (/half year). Still kicking.

Every now and again I bring this up - I love that fact that Gary got to see that little game that he and the guys played in the basement of his house turned into a global phenomenon, though I doubt they ever would have believed it if you told them about that way back in the 70's.

This game has players from all over the world in it - your DM is from just outside the birthplace of D&D - Lake Geneva, WI, USA. And we've got two groups full of new players! Where is everyone located? You don't have to share if you don't want to, and again, thanks to my veterans who I bore with this topic every now and again.

Started playing in the late 1980s using a hybrid of AD&D and Mentzer Basic & Expert. Picked up 2e & the full BECMI suite as they were released. Quit playing shortly after 3e, because LIFE and the new hotness didn't make any sense to me. Returned to playing about 13-14 years ago: got involved with S&W, OSRIC, and found this little game when it started.

Do the witches actually do anything evil? They tempt MacBeth with their prophecy, but they don't push him into his later actions. It's MacBeth and Lady MacBeth who actually do the evil deeds trying to force the prophecy to come true.

Please don't get me wrong here, since this is the internet everything can seem like a personal attack when it's all in text. I've got nothing against you, Chup. Just enjoying the discussion. Hopefully you are too.

That said, to me your point seems irrelevant to the question at hand. I'm open to an argument that by instigating/tempting MacBeth, the witches performed an act of evil for which they are not punished.

Arguing over authorship of the scene doesn't support or contradict the argument that the witches did something bad for which they were not punished.

And the whole point of bringing up MacBeth was to talk about discussion of drinking and debauchery, wasn't it? :D

So recently it was brought to my attention that some of our players might enjoy a side tavern where they could interact with the rest of the players out-of-game, but still in-character (unlike the current OOC thread). We've seen the Tavern creep into the OOC thread plenty of times.  :^)   Are any of you interested in this? Obviously, if we do this, I'd like everyone to keep quiet about the adventures they're currently on (no spoilers for the Dungeon!) but past exploits would be fine.

What do you think?

I'm a fan of the IC OOC scenes that spontaneously pop up. I'd probably mostly ignore a longer term one so I don't get my canon confused with my 'alternate reality'. I'm memory challenged enough IRL. ;)

On the other hand, for those interested in PVP, maybe a Fight Club thread for duelers to meet and beat.

History has shown that the IC OOC tends to die down without direction from the 2nd week so I'm not sure how long a permanent thread would be supportable, even though like Errol I enjoy the spontaneous IC OOC.

I think the IC OOC fight club type thread is a very interesting concept.  Bring up the leaderboard with bragging rights.  No reason why some RP as character personalities make themselves known couldn't be part of it either.

If you review the film there is no Fight Club. Simply because The origin of it being a Man in a carpark outside a Club, who appears to be talking to himself, starts beating himself up. No, he had Defenitive Identity Disorder, or what is commonly refered to as multiple personality disorder that was linked to a coe-occuring sleep disorder, which sometimes happens. The book goes into what set of the DID, but its been a while since I've read it, so can't recall at the moment.
I'll be re-reading it as part of a lecture series for another site I'm a part of for writers on characterization, and how scene description can play into that in regards to the strategic withholding of information to set up a plot component  for the audience.
Its one of the books I'll be using, but hardly the only one, I'll be using Choke as well, which was written by the same author, and also includes a socially undesirable human being based on common norms.

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

in the book, of this I'm sure, other people join the group, the actuall organization quite clearly exists in the book, in fact it begins with someone in Fight club asking him who his alter ego is, not even knowing there was an alter ego, right before they blow up the Visa Director Building in New York. That's how the book starts, and the rest of it is a circular explanation leading up to that event.

What happens is he starts one fight club thinking he's just going along for the ride of his alter ego, fight club being a part of and related to project mayhem.

But regardless of how the film shows it, there is an honest to God fight club that starts off and becomes national in the book.

There is a Fight Club in the film and in the book. It may start as a product of his DID but it exists, and they spring up all over. Heck, real life fight clubs were formed and some of the activities of Project Mayhem have been replicated. The combination of good (and/or challenging) writing and people wanting something different to believe in.

Usually oxen, sacrificed at the beginning of the month we call July by the ancient Athenians. The entrails and other choice bits were burned as offerings to Athena.

It came, over time, to mean any large sacrificial offering, whether or not the offering was immolated.

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

In walks Clangedin, a priest by the look of him, decked out in plate mail with the symbol of his god prominently engraved on his shield.  The shield is battered and dented, obviously having seen action.  He is deep in conversation with another dwarf, who some recognise as Uthecar also still dressed in his battle armour.

Uthecar stops at the dozen two-fours of Elsinore beer sitting in the middle of the floor.  Seeing no one is minding them he pulls one out handing it to the priest, and pulls another for himself.  Clangedin looks around a little concerned they belong to someone else's but seeing the barman raise his arm to drink up pops the cap along with Uthecar.  They tap bottles and chug down the brew draining the bottles completely before letting out satisfied sighs of appreciation in unison.  Uthecar then bellows  "CUGEL" in a gruff voice, probably louder than he intended having spied him at the bar.  When the halfling turns to look who has called his name he throws one of the beers to him.  "Uthecar found beer no one want.  You help drink."  He looks around for anyone else who might be interested in a bottle.

Wehostan walks in, surveys the room, nodding to old acquaintances and new faces alike. For those who've seen the adventuresome Halfling before, you'll note that he stands a full 1' taller than the last time you saw him. Still the same ugly face, though.

He stands next to the Dwarves, shoulder to shoulder, and picks up one of the Elsinores. "Can't argue with free booze! Happy Holidays, everyone! And may the new year be full of unguarded piles of gold." He raises his two-four in salute.

In reply to Clangedin Gir (msg # 667):

Grabbing his pipe, and quickly catching the beer that is tossed to him, spilling almost half of it.
"Thank you for the beer, old friend.  And absolutely lets have a pipe."
Grabbing some dark cut leaf he asks for his new halfling friends pipe, and packs it for him, then his own.
Soon billow's of smoke can be seen, and smelled a sweet fruits spice around the pair.
While slowly drinking his beer, since he isn't as well trained in drinking like his dwarf companion, he speaks up to Beelo.
"Nice to meet you, I am Cugel.  what an eclectic group of people here.  Look at that halfling, he is taller than any I have seen, maybe he is part human, too?"

Hauraki, and his henchmen saunter in, just in time for Uthecar to throw them each a two-four and join in Wehostan's toast.  Hauraki looks to Wehostan after he had taken a decent swig.  "You still moving up in the world?" he asks.

In reply to Hauraki (msg # 670):

Hauraki and his entourage walk in, Stone leaves his shell game, and grabs a beer.
"Hey there!  Grab an ale, everyone has just started showing up, should be a good turnout tonight!    "

"Hey, this stuff isn't bad," says Beelo. "What farm is it from?"

Beelo settles in for a long evening of drinking cider, ignoring the beer, smoking his pipe, eating stew and bread, and discussing the strange megadungeon with his fellow adventurers.

Not a joke. A toast.

I raise my cup of cider, strike it a few times with my soup spoon and say,

"Let this be the best Yule ever! Good drinks, good friends, good gods!"

Re: Group 0 2018 OOC thread...

Hey gang, in case you missed it during the holidays, in honor of our 10 1/2 year anniversary (and the New Year):

As a present to you all, everyone gives yourselves 250 XP per level. I know that raises some of you folks a level mid-adventure, which is fine. Just update your character or ask me if you have any questions.

This is just a repeat of post #656 of this thread and not an additional 250xp right Jeff.
