A new low would have been entirely skipping an opportunity for moneymaking, and thankfully we're a long way from that!

For jokes, something gnome-relevant: What do you call people who sleep in their socks? Tiny.

The post you've been expecting for a while now...

It's true - I have finally admitted to myself that after 16+ years of running my AD&D game here on RPOL, and years of running other systems as well that it's time to declare my remaining play-by-post games dead. Flat-lined, with no chance of revival. To those of you who kept sending me positive vibes during this truly difficult period in my life, thank you, moreso than you might realize. Before these games crashed and burned, they were a much-needed part of my hobbies. But as I found out recently, no matter how much we might fight it, kicking and screaming, we do have to change our life as our life changes around us.

I regret not wrapping these adventures up with some sort of coherent finale, but I have too much going on in Real Life to drag this out any more. Let's face it, it wasn't very fair of me to tell you I wasn't ghosting the game, only to become one of those DMs I used to hate who did just that.

I'm leaving the game open for a while yet - if any of you wish to type back and forth with me, well, I's still a decent, "pen-pal," even if I have killed of all my pbp games.

I wish each one of you all the best, and as always, thank you for playing this old game with me.

Seven years of college down the drain...

I watched Animal House again recently, first time in years - parts of it haven't aged well at all, but I still laughed my head off.

This was my first game on RPol, FIFTEEN YEARS AGO (and I know others have been here longer). It has been immense fun.

I ran a game on here for a while, it got to be too much. Running several games for all this time? I doff my metaphorical hat to you.

Now, it is only fair that I point to the terms you agreed to in your Gang Green DM's ContractTM...

I can only echo the sentiments of others, except I suppose I had a chance to stumble upon Nemrac and play Nex aka Hauraki in this game longer than most, so possibly I have the greatest depth of gratitude for all of your fine work Jeff.

Nemrac was my first game and Nex/Hauraki my first character on Rpol, almost 16 years ago, and you always remember your first.

I see over the years we shared hundreds of lines of posts in the PM Jeff, and it was great to hear about some of the triumphs you had behind the curtain, plus I always enjoyed the stories you shared in regards to insights you had about GG or some of the other early creators of DND that you had gamed with.

I'm okay to be sad to see it end, it means it meant something.

To all you other long time gaming companions, farewell in this guise, I look forward to seeing you through another's eyes.

I've actually got a spot in my Gamma World game. One player has apparently dropped the game (although he's still posting in another game where we're both players). I don't want to give over his PC to a new player without his say-so (I've asked, waiting for a reply), but if he's out, the group could use another character or two.

The game is called Gamma Terra, and it uses the 4th edition (1992) rules. link to another game

_______
On a more serious note: I know some players here are already over there, and some of you don't care for newfangled 5E, but the game D&D 5E: The West Marches, run by aguy777, is always open for new players. I was just PMing with the GM and he asked me to cordially invite anyone interested to join up.

It's another big game like this one, with lots of players, lots of adventuring groups, and no predefined plot. And for a 5E game, it's fairly deadly! He also gives out lots of XP (he doesn't divide it by the members of the group) so leveling up is pretty fast until you get to about 5th level.

The post you've been expecting for a while now...

I'd like to thank everyone who has sent PMs, rMails, and e-mails offering to stay in touch. FYI Tonight (Friday) is Family Night. Saturday, I work, and Sunday I'll be running an eight-player game of Coyote & Crow at the FLGS.

So what's Coyote & Crow? It's a sci-fi/fantasy/alt future RPG written by a Cherokee citizen, aided by a team of Native Writers and artists. The game's perspective is that Europeans never made it across the ocean to colonize the Americas, leaving the Natives to develop math, science, and tech alongside spirituality in their own ways.

Last Sunday I demoed Coyote and Crow at an FLGS Two little towns over and since the room only hold seven without getting too warm, I ran that game for seven. A fun time was had by all.

Anyway, next week is emptier, so I promise to make the time to respond to each and every message I have received. I look forward to it, in fact.  :^D

Here are some C&C pics: (NOT Castles and Crusades - no offense to the Troll Lords, but I like Coyote & Crow better!)

If I may make a bold suggestion:

Instead of closing the game down what about going on an extended hiatus?  Call it a year, and then revisit the idea of opening up again?

Most of us are long time RPLOERS at this point and I would think that, if you were up for it, some of us will still be around in one form or another.

Just a thought.

I mirror that thought, given you're going to have to delete the game to get rid of me.  A reboot/refresh/restart in whatever form it takes would be welcomed.

Life swings in cycles and I've got two other games on my sticky list that are in hibernation (since 2018) until the DM finds the time / desire or creativity to play again.  The players and DM keep in contact periodically to keep the game open and stop it being deleted from the back end.  Come back to the game when it feels like an old friend you want to visit, not when it's a burden to carry Jeff.

So they played all this time and only came in 10th among Druids, an inferior class to be sure?  I mean, really, anyone who speaks to trees and animals can't be right in the head.  Here I have only been around for a little while and am already #1 fighter, a class any good Dwarf can be proud of.

Should have been born a dwarf, Tern. Or a gnome.

I joined on Mon 13 Dec 2010. It doesn't feel like 13.25 years since Samitha almost (rightly) brained me with her morning star in my first tavern. Errol just barely dodged learning a lesson and still somehow managed to keep people alive and, in turn, be kept alive, long enough reach level 7. He's a mediocre thief, having only recently passed both a Move Silent and Hide in Shadows check in the same turn for the first time, but an amazingly lucky fighter when necessary. I will forever treasure my time as a rat-gnome, a curse that was nearly Errol's downfall as well as a key element of who Errol is. Especially the moment where, by unprompted die roll, he went completely feral, saved a party member (I think - Errol lies too much), and was patted on the back by Jeff for anticipating the direction of the curse. Nor will I forget the fact that is was Samitha that saved him. Paladins.

Errol was so opposite of IRL me, and so fun to play because of the people in this game. Thank you Samitha for choosing mercy and tolerance and then a huge dose of mercy again. In a way, Gang Green is what it is because of you. ... Sorry? :D

Really?  That constitution bonus alone would mean you should have a minimum of 30hp at 5th level, so your INT and WIS are probably not as high as you're stating either.

A 9th level mage isn't too shabby.  Sounds like someone was lucky enough to come across a Libram of Silver Magic.

That's a good point Lionel, obviously Hauraki's INT wasn't 20.  I think Nex's crowning achievement was to have a place named after him on the map, (Nexlanding) but then I had to change his name to Hauraki to help avoid the previously unknown worst monsters in Nemrac, land tax agents.

I'm sorry to see the game will no longer be running. I am in consensus with the others that we could at least keep the game open to keep in touch with each other and also maybe a revival of sorts. I know I was here about 15 years ago and played consistently for about 10 years before taking a 2 year hiatus. I came back and now hopefully never to leave again!

Wehostan, son of Bardolf:

Thanks Jeff. I enjoyed playing Lycurgus. It's been fun, especially having had a stable group for many years - with Sam, Graes, Gwire in particular - for many years. Harukai has been good as well, though not as long. Was looking forward to getting to know Stone better but alas, it was not meant to be.

Lycurgus started off level 1/1 and though he got a bit of a lift from the others who were a bit higher level, it wasn't that much. So mostly he earned each level on his own, climbing up level after level reaching 6/7 Fighter/Mage - the level 7 being a benefit from the Librium. He also was the one to find the secret door that earned us the most wondrous stash of magic items we found the entire duration of the game. You had me rolled a d12 and I rolled a 1. At the time, before I knew the outcome or even what the roll meant, I knew that was either really good or really bad. Turned out good.

There have been other twists and turns along the way. The shocking death of Samitha, after years of play. I had thought that raise dead scroll we got from the above magic hoard would never be used. Also worried Sam might not make her Raise Dead survival check (she passed). Was glad the dice weren't bad that day! Then there was the time when we were almost overwhelmed by a Ghast together with a group of Ghouls. We had thought we were ok because Sam's Protection from Evil keeps Ghouls at bay but not Ghasts! It was Sam and I and maybe 3 1st levelers. Sam and 2 of the 1st levels all got paralyzed. Lycurgus had to make 2 saving throws - which he fortunately did - because I don't think the first leveler would have had a chance. There were other anecdotes - won't mention them all.

My favorite, though, was when Lycurgus was young (low level) and was adventuring with Elornia (spelling?/something similar). There was a young Green Dragon flying towards us and there was a near-consensus, not including Lycurgus, that we should try to talk to it. I think it was wishful thinking but when it started diving and roaring Lycurgus had enough and fired an arrow at it, hitting it for max damage. There were a few recriminations for Lycurgus winging it and statements like now we're going to have to fight it. However, it was all in good fun and worked out for the best (no one died except the dragon).

Best wishes!

If anyone's looking for...

Revised 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons: Over on Myth-Weavers, there is a gestalt game lounge called "The Realm Folded Tavern".  You can start from 1st to 3rd level.

5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons: Adventurers League is anticipating an uptick in activity, but I'm sure if a bunch of people came flooding in, the Dungeon Masters would be delighted and spurred to run a game or two...   😼😹 Especially with that Vecna adventure coming up!  In any case, "Aldara Figments" or "Dilemma" sent you!
AL games are organized play, so there's generally very stable rules, and you can expect to complete an adventure.  More information can be learned at the Adventurers League section of the Wizards of the Coast website for Dungeons & Dragons.  And, Adventurers League is VERY newbie-friendly -- the Dungeon Masters I play with, and the AL people there in general, have a very "there is no such thing as a stupid question" attitude about things, which won me over.

I'm not terribly sure if there's a rule against what I just said, since in around 2012, when I registered here, I do recall seeing something about not talking about games on other forums, or telling people to look there, or something.  Regardless, if you like gestalt v3.5 (gimme Epic6) or 5th Edition games, head on over.  They'd love to see you there.

He's quite fluent too, but English grammar takes a lot of getting used to, and, most Americans have very crappy grammar as well. My grammar has greatly degraded with age and being exposed to many functionally illiterates, and it does drag you down! ;-) Most kids today ARE functionally illiterate due to our education system being screwed over by folks more interested in power than teaching the kids. But I digress! Thank God there are still so many great teachers and educators, just wish we could clear out the bad ones!

It does. Hard to find any games I'm interested in any more. The DMs are retiring, leaving, or dying. I've been in, and am in, a few highly enjoyable games, but they get fewer and further between it seems. Odd and new systems I don't play. The ones I do play, no one runs any more hardly. After StarMaster passed away last year, almost no Traveller games now. I'm in a CT game that rarely posts now and is winding down to the end, and one Mongoose 2nd edition game. StarMaster ran 6 himself! Plus an unknown number of other system games I wasn't in. I had 3 lady DM's, I was in 10 games between them, all disappeared within a month! It's getting rough out there!

Erwyn Madyys was my second character in this campaign. The first character I had was Hootuk Madyys, a fighter that retired at level 4 and went back to his little town (Curtal) to build and run a inn called The Face of Helios (with features aligned to the sun cult of Helios, such as a facade painted in yellow, exposure to south with big windows allowing light in, etc.
Hootuk has a hired follower to carry stuff for him and minding his alpaca (Hootuk had a full plate armour, so he couldn't carry much with him...) and the follower was a relative. When he retired, I decided to play Hootuk's follower and made up that he was his cousin Erwyn.
In practice, all this was to participate with a little piece of the jigsaw to Nemrac's world building, adding a notable location (an inn called The Face of Helios, in Curtal) to the list :)
