Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

At the heart of the Strife Alliance is the planet Neplusultra. That planet has three flagships: The Niven, The Battleduster, and The Synchronizer.

Where The Niven is seen as more of a government ship and The Battleduster is a symbol of the Strife Alliance's military might, The Synchronizer is suppose to represent the people in the form of a sort of emergency-response craft that goes out to rescue people.

The current date is Klarr J, 6098. (Neplusultran calendar)

A couple months back, the previous Synchronizer and its crew all met their end during an attempt at rescuing millions in what has become known as "The Rending", where a planet was seen splitting into two planets.

In the wake of this event, a new Synchornizer has been constructed. It will be led by Captain Nicholas Jay Stalker, who is known to have been friends with the previous ship's captain.

The ship is now ready and has its crew assembled. Already, even on its maiden voyage, the Synchronizer is starting off with a foreign noble aboard the ship for an unknown period of time to strengthen his world's ties with the Strife Alliance. Ordinarily, such a guest would be aboard the Niven, but given the recent events, the Synchronizer was chosen so that the noble and thus, his world, could be part of this rebirth after mourning the loss of great heroes...

OOC: Please introduce your characters. The noble is a guest on the ship and thus, does not have a rank in the Strife Alliance. The rest of you, however, choose from the following ranks:

Ensign
Lieutenant Junior Grade
Lieutenant
Lieutenant Commander
Commander

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Ensign Boko is the ship's yeoman (AKA, Captain's secretary).  She's a soft-spoken half raccoon, half red panda who's fresh out of the academy.  The personnel report Captain Stalker has on her assures him that in spite of her youth, she is highly qualified for the job.  There's even some key phrases that thinly veil that the brass expect her to be on the fast track for promotion.  Very likely an admiral's favor for her wealthy and influential family wanting her to be tucked away in a nice, safe office in the capitol as soon as possible.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

The foreign noble is Tyrandis Vein. A handsome human man in his mid thirties, Tyrandis is a prince of his homeworld, Lornst. Dressed in the renaissance style of attire typical of his homeworld, Tyrandis' elegant attire belies a lithe and athletic build of a man who is quite capable. Indeed, it was his own request to be dispatched aboard the Synchonizer, that he might have an opportunity to distinguish himself through action. Possessing a generally agreeable and pleasant exterior, some note that the prince has a certain coldness to his eyes. Nevertheless, he seems anxious to be of use, and is generally polite to all he meets aboard the ship.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Lieutenant Kel has what is both one of the easiest, and most frustrating jobs in Sci-Fi space fleets.  The Coalwren is the bridge sensors officer.

A task which as we all know wildly alternates between obvious statements the audience rolls their eyes at, and the sensors being as useful as a magic 8-Ball's 'reply hazy'.  But a task he takes seriously enough still to not zone out on the job.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Seeing everyone present and on time, Captain Stalker addresses the media. "Today, as has always been the case in its history, the Synchronizer will be seeking those in need. And as long as the Synchronizer is capable of movement, that is what the ship will always do. The stars are a welcome sight to the Synchronizer and her crew. So I ask that everyone watching this, from Neplusultra to Tharia to Lornst..." he glances at Tyrandis with a brief nod, then looks back at the reporters, "Commit to memory that this moment is a symbol of an unchallenged fact: The Synchronizer will not stop helping people. Even when faced with oblivion, she will rise from the ashes and continue her task. So if you will excuse my crew and I, we have a job to do."

Nearby is High Councelor Pamila Durk, who does the traditional bottle-smashing on the side of the ship to send it off. She then gives Nicholas leave to go inside and lead the others inside.

Once in the ship, Captain Stalker leads the bridge crew (and Tyrandis) to the bridge. When everyone is at their stations, the ship fires up. He gives the pilot the order to take the ship out. Slow at first, and then, once clear of the space station by about 30 miles, he has the ship go into wide scan and then fast travel speed, heading towards the Haven Sector.

The Captain then looks around at the crew. "I want you all to understand something. While we are a search and rescue team, we are people first. It would not make sense to be a search and rescue who takes care of others in the universe and then not take care each other. So if anyone ever has problems, be they personal, physical, or otherwise, you can talk to either myself or my first mate. Of course, we do have a doctor and a therapist on board, but I am talking about when the problems involve things like having a problem with a fellow crew mate or being unable to perform a task. We are available and we are personable. Also, if anyone has questions, let me know."

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

If the Yeoman looks distracted, it is because she is.  The entire time, she's been on the com handling last-minute details using her very tiny headset.  (( https://cdn.trendhunterstatic....uetooth-headset.jpeg ))

For example, one private called to say, "I'm sick.  Do I have to be in formation?  Wouldn't it look bad for a sick crew member to be on live broadcast?"

To which the Yeoman cooed, "Sorry to hear you're not well.  But yes, you must be in formation.  Unless you have a disability waiver from medical staff saying you are unable to stand on your feet.  Please hold..."

Or the one where a specialist called saying, "Um...  The shipment of extra toilet paper never got delivered.  Please tell the Captain we'll need to delay launch or we're going to have a very unpleasant maiden voyage."

To which the Yeoman whispered, "Oh dear.  It was showing as delivered on my spreadsheet.  Um...  Try looking in the box labeled, 'paper products.'  Bay 7, Row 2.  If it's not there...  I'm sorry to say, but we can't delay the voyage for inventory considered, 'non-essential.'"

"Private?  Thank you for holding.  Do your best to look good for the people you love.  If medical can't give you something to hold you over, call me and I'll dig something up for you."

...and so on.  Of course, whenever the Captain is about to speak, she puts her duties aside to pay careful attention.  Today, every word coming out of his mouth is making her smile.  The way she looks up to him is almost childishly obvious.

To his invitation she gives a salute and answers in a soft, broken voice, "Ye- Yessir!"

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Tyrandis listens to Stalker's speech to the media with polite disinterest, although he returns the captain's nod with a gracious one of his own, and a bland smile to the cameras. He then proceeds to follow the captain and the rest of the crew to the bridge as they depart. Throughout this process he seems much more attentive, glancing about at the various crew members as they perform their duties. He does not fail to notice Boko's devotion to the captain. He once more nods as Stalker finishes explaining his expectations of crew and passenger behavior.

"Your words mark you as a man of wisdom and experience, Captain. And allow me to once more extend to you my gratitude for graciously allowing me to accompany you on this expedition."

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Kra goes through the motions of weathering press events with a totally-real-honest pleased with their organization look on their face. Like countless crew before and after him will continue to do so.

When it's sit down and do your job time again, Lieutenant Kel busies himself with the very real concern of ensuring there is nobody deciding they are worth cutting in front of another ship countless times their size.

He's heard the obvious talk about Boko, but getting fast tracked to service desk without the desk is hardly an position worth envy except on paper.  At least to the coalwren.  It's going to take longer to form an opinion on tag along royalty though.

Now if only he could think of something cool to say to the captain... Nope, that's a bust.

OOC: I stopped playing Elite Dangerous as much for overall burnout, as minor hand and finger issues not agreeing with a flight stick.  But oh man, docking and exiting is often quite the fiasco even when not trying to smuggle stuff.

Kra did not pick up anything out of the ordinary during take-off.

Nicholas looks at Tyrandis and lets a small smile escape. "Thank you for your kind words. Honestly, I've never been in the presence of royalty. I'm honored to have you aboard."

He looks at Boko since she also gave an answer and gives her a nod with that small smile still on his face. "Ensign Owens, is there anything to report that I should know about?"

Meanwhile, Kra is able to pick up something on the wide-scan sensors. If he hones in on the area with the blip, he will find that it is an energy surge* coming from Planet Jeenose (also known as HS25). To learn more about the energy, the ship would have to set course there. Thankfully, Jeenose is in the Haven Sector, so the ship would not have to alter its course much since the Captain had the ship going to the Haven Sector anyway (if towards a different location of the sector).

*For a long-range scanner to pick up an energy surge notable enough to bother with, it would have to be a big one, such as a nuclear explosion on a planet.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Having a Coalwren on the bridge of your phoenix ship's maiden voyage would itself be rarity enough for wonderment, but royalty too?!  What little peripheral glances Boko dares in Tyrandis' direction are furtive indeed, and his regal demeanor does not encourage venturing anything more bold than to simply listen to his stately compliments for Captain Stalker.

Speaking of whom, Boko is both devastated and elated to be addressed so formally by the Captain with a smile on his lips.  So it isn't through any emotional fortitude that she is able to answer with a fresh cadet's crisp salute and immediate response time.  Rather, it is simply an instinctive reflex developed during Basic and Officer Candidate School.

"Sir!  N-nosir.  Nothing worthy of your immediate attention, sir.  You will have as detailed a briefing as you order once you decide you have a moment to spare on the trivial details I've handled for you, sir."

Boko lets out a nearly imperceptible whimper from behind her tightly closed, quivering lips.  She's certain she just embarrassed herself beyond measure.

Poor Tyrandis, joining the ship where the job is to give people their planets back to them when you're done.

Of course that requires a planet being intact enough for such in the first place, so hopefully the sensor readings are an isolated incident rather than something soon repeated.  "Energy surge from Jeenose, captain.  Sensors can't determine the exact cause from here, but detecting it at this range is already notable."

Nicholas can see the logic in Tyrandis' statement, but decides not to dwell on it much.

To Kra's information, Captain Stalker says, "Set a course for Planet Jeenose."

The ship heads to Jeenose! Nicholas says, "Commander Skyrise, take the bridge. Ensign Owens, come with me please." He goes to the door that leads out of the bridge. He presents the door to Boko, offering for her to exit the bridge first.

Commander Skyrise, a female Zalor*, says with a cheerful smile, "Aye, Captain." and goes to take the captain chair.

The sensors probably won't show much different until the ship is within Jeenose's solar system.

*Zalor look like fluffy humanoid critters with antennae on top of their head and round ears on the sides of their head. They have three digits on each hand and foot and tend to stand about a meter tall. Commander Skyrise in particular, has light blue fur and blonde hair.

Anybody's guess why Boko blushes and suppresses a smile when Tyrandis answers Captain Stalker.

She gasps in concern at Kra Kel's revelation.  What could it be?  A volcano?  Something really really bad in any case.  Her worry for the people living there almost insulates her from Nicholas' surprising orders.

Me?  Why me?  And why say 'please?'

None of the other officers have ever given her so polite an order.  Boko does as asked as swiftly as she can, but is sure to give a goodbye wave to everyone on the bridge...  Only to kick herself for doing something so out of place.

You don't last long in the console operator business without being able to handle people peeking over your shoulder.  "That is a possibility, though accidents with power or science facilities are also likely, along with any number of natural phenomenon."  Noncommittal answers, but screaming 'I bet it was a bomb!' or 'A crystalline entity did it!' just makes the job harder in the long run.

Kra doesn't expect the sensors to start giving a clear answer until the ship gets a call telling them either 'Everything is GREAT! Turn around or else we complain' or 'Everything sucks! Fly faster or else we complain.'

Though he does call up some exposition info about HS25 on his one eyed visual assistance visor he totally had the whole time honest. So he can start forming some biased opinions ahead of time.

Once alone with Boko, Nicholas turns to face her with a serious face and says, "We are alone. Nobody can hear us. Now. What is there to report and why were you so afraid to report that you nearly cried? Is someone threatening you? Because I assure you: If you are being quiet due to someone threatening you, keeping quiet will endanger everyone's lives, including yours. But if you tell me, I can protect you and the person who threatened you will be sorry they ever did."

Commander Skyrise watches Tyrandis and Kra converse. It seems harmless enough, so she doesn't comment and instead just faces forward again with a smile.

The ship is already in the Haven sector and almost at the solar system Jeenose is in. Kra's sensors pick up more data on the energy reading: It is electrical in nature. If still huge enough to amount to a nuke's level of energy (Four Quadrillion joules of energy)*.

*For comparison, a lightning bolt produces One Billion joules of energy. So a nuke's worth of energy would be approximately Four Million lightning bolts all at once.

The Recording:
"I am Lieutenant Franklin, a psychiatrist of 17 years.  The person with whom you are talking has a personality type known as ISFJ-T: introverted, observant, feeling, judging, and turbulent.  ISFJ is not a mental illness, it is a personality type that is extremely common.  About 1 in 10 have this combination of traits.  While an ISFJ has many good qualities, such as being extremely well organized, reliable, and warm, there are a few that others might have difficulty with.  Especially extroverted thinkers.  If you are hearing this recording, the person with whom you are talking has likely been under so much stress that they are now unable to answer you, and may even appear to be having an emotional meltdown.  You need only have a little patience, and you will soon learn that you couldn't ask for a more sensitive friend."

Speaking of the commander, Angela looks over at the conversation again.

Kra's research on Jeenose brings up the following:

It is an inhabited planet, where the Jeenosians* come from.
It has a population of about 10 billion.
It has a tech level that puts them on the low end of inter-star-system travel.
It has normal weather patterns for a habitable planet with oceans.
Chances of the electric energy surge being natural are, in fact, nearly nonexistent.

Kra wondered if someone was either doing really poorly, or really successfully in their attempts to build a weather machine.  The end result in either case is usually quite similar, except the off switch is still working in one case.

But it probably wouldn't be that, as it would be too straightforward a problem to deal with.

"While I assume you came prepared Tyrandis, if you lack appropriate attire for such weather conditions I'm certain some will be provided for you, should you visit the surface personally." Ah yes, the royal galoshes.  How regal.

Kra keeps a morbid update tracker of the rough estimate of planetary life signs, to see how quickly they are dropping.   Once they get close enough, he shall scan to see of the local waffle house equivalents are open or closed.

Boko gets a relatively ominous blank from trying to tune into the news. However, she does begin to pick up on a weak signal coming from the surface of Jeenose. The comms expert could probably pinpoint the precise location the signal is coming from, but it sounds like a conversation between a pair of elderly men in the Jeenosian language.

Meanwhile, the probe is able to go all the way to the atmosphere and down to the surface without issue. Seems whatever knocked out the planet's electricity is done doing so and will not immediately suck the energy of any foreign object approaching the planet.

Nicholas says, "We need to find out the source of the problem, but with the power outage, our only option is to take a shuttle to their capital building and hopefully get a few answers there. Kra, I'll need you on the shuttle to monitor any changes in energy fluctuations via the probe so that if we see danger coming, we can return to the Synchronizer. She quickly begins reviewing the emergency procedures manual as she follows along.  Maybe there's a chapter for planet-wide power outage?  Oh my.  There is!

"C-Captain.  A phone conversation was detected on the surface.  That means that some battery-operated tech is still operational.  Procedure says that the Com officer is supposed to initiate a specific emergency broadcast message.  I've already forwarded a reminder... u-unless you don't want it broadcast?"

Nicholas actually has a shuttle pilot already in the shuttle whose entire purpose of being there is to pilot the thing. He won't be leaving the shuttle when the others do.

Tyrandis receives a notification on his phone. It is a message that is titled "For the Prince's eyes only".

Meanwhile, the Comms Officer tells Boko, "Planet Jeenose actually had a technology for communications that used Audilite, a crystal natural to the planet that was a conduit for audio transmissions without the need of electricity. It is an outdated technology because the range wasn't anywhere near the range of the electric-run communication systems, so whoever is using the communication you picked up is likely using antiques to communicate with each other..."

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

The note to Tyrandis reads: "From the King's Advisor: An assassin was caught last night attempting to murder the King in his sleep. While normally, his Majesty would not worry you with such matters, the assassin was discovered to be hired by an off-worlder. This has brought to light the urgency of diplomatic ties, and so you will be receiving a list of potential suitors that would be politically advantageous for Lornst. -For the Majesty of Lornst and its King."

To Boko and Kra, with a ponderous look in his eye, the captain says, "It should..."

J'la only gives Tyrandis a glance, but goes back to minding her own business rather then peer over his shoulder.

The shuttle lands in front of the capital building and Nicholas exits with the others. The sounds of panicked people can be heard in the distance, but there are a few panicked here as well. It is night time on this side of the planet and no lights are on. From the look of things, though, personal batteries work, what with some people using functional flashlights. "Lt Kel, keep an eye out for us to make sure we don't get separated. Boko, hold our light. J'la, be ready for danger, but keep it low profile." he hands a flashlight to Boko.

J'la nods and pulls out a stun baton. She does have a gun on her hip, but it remains there for now.

Good thing for Boko she has no idea what's going on with Tyrandis' messages.  With everything else going on, she might burst into tears to hear about the prince's dad being attacked.  She's thankful for the simple task she's given by Nicholas and answers with a crisp salute.

"Please keep the doors locked till we return," Boko whispers to the pilot before exiting and lighting the way.

Wouldn't do for the pilot to have to fend off looters all by his lonesome.

He's also very thankful J'la is here to beat up anyone who makes Boko cry... Wait, no, J'la would have already beaten up the Captain if that were the case.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Tyrandis does not appear particularly phased by the note. He is not particularly adverse, after all, to the prospect of becoming King a little earlier than natural causes would dictate. While he waits for the list of potential suitors to come through he turns his attention to the panicked people about him, unclasping what appears to be a metal cylinder around the size of a baton. His gloved thumb hovers over a small switch on the device, but he refrains from pressing it for the time being.

OOC: Assuming the GM is all right with it, Tyrandis Vein carries a weapon similar to a Force Pike when extended. It is made of a special metal which is very strong, and extends in a way similar to an extendable antenna or a plastic lightsaber, tier by tier, with four tiers in total.

(GM sees nothing wrong with Tyrandis having the weapon he described.)

The group makes it inside the building without issue. It isn't long before the group sees one of the monkey-looking people.*

*Went ahead and uploaded the old sketch. Lower left corner of the pic shows a Jeenosian: https://timothius.deviantart.c...s-concepts-727239265

The jeenosian the group sees before them is male and looks possibly middle-aged. He is holding a lit candle and, upon seeing the group, looks hopeful. "Wow... we didn't even have the ability to send out a distress call yet and you guys are here? The federation really are on top of things!"

Nicholas nods and says, "We're looking for the people in charge so we can get started sorting things out."

The jeenosian nods excitedly and says, "This way!" before leading the group towards a room.

Assuming nobody objects to going there, the jeenosian leads the group inside the room and inside are jeenosians wearing important-looking clothing. They were in the middle of debating when the group enters, causing the jeenosians to go quiet upon seeing them.

The room they are in is lit with many candles.

Soon, the group learns what the Jeenose leadership knows: There was power, then suddenly, a huge surge of power, then no power. The leadership is both literally and figuratively in the dark as to what is going on.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Intimidated though she may be with meeting with such important people, Boko is hyper focused on worrying for those most endangered by a power outage - people on life-support for example.  In an uncharacteristically bold move, she takes initiative and offers an emergency holo-vid.

"Th-this will outline the urgent first steps that must be taken in this kind of crisis.  But I'm sorry to say that it assumes battery operated long-range communication possible.  Which in this case can only happen if we get some Audilite to our ship.  Every moment that passes without planetary coordination will...  increase... death."

Her voice breaks and tears pour down her face as she wrestles with the immense gravity of the situation.  Sure she has every confidence that a fleet of relief ships is already being mobilized, but that takes time.  For the most at-risk people, every moment counts.  How many premature newborns in neonatal intensive care units will die before this crisis is over?

Kra is so glad to see Boko stepping up to the challenge and handling her job with the professionalism it deserves.

"How robust is your satellite network?  Even low tech cameras hurled into orbit with math and a prayer would do. But an existing infrastructure would mean recovering information from planetside computers, without having to scan for and scoop up satellites manually until we get a bead on where this all started."

Kra's opinions may be influenced by the fact he's angled just behind Boko enough that he can't see her crying.

Tyrandis does not seem at all intimidated by being in the presence of a bunch of non-human leaders of a single, backwater planet. He doesn't let his sentiments show, of course, feigning interest and concern as the leaders explain what has happened. He does spare a quizzical glance at Boko's tears. Either she is a better actor than he is, or else she really does feel some sort of emotional response to the prospect of a handful of monkey-people dying. Neither scenario seems particularly likely.

Having little understanding of satellites or communication technology in general, Tyrandis remains silent as Kra Kel speaks, rubbing his chin thoughtfully with a gloved hand and nodding knowingly. He glances expectantly at the Jeenosian leaders for a response.

He then looks at Kra. "Actually, if you take our satellite expert with you, he can help you pinpoint which satellite caught the origin of the blast. For the obvious reasons, we are unable to get to space ourselves at the moment..."

Nicholas nods and says, "OK. Get your expert and have them meet with me at the entrance of the basement." he looks at his group "We're going to the basement to get the audilite. Once their satellite expert meets up with us, we'll head back to the Synchronizer."

She turns to face the nearest council page and says softly, "Please escort us to the basement.  Moments count.  We cannot afford to take a wrong turn."

She doesn't conveniently have the floorplan of the capitol building in her database.  Maps of the city, sure, but floorplans was something deemed easy enough to procure from the local datanet once you arrive...

The group is soon led to the basement where the audilite crystals are held. The audilite is a deep blue and appears to be constantly humming. https://i.pinimg.com/736x/59/5...rystals-minerals.jpg

Captain Stalker says, "I don't know how much we'll need, so I guess each of us can carry enough to hold in one arm so your other arm is free for self defense."

Stalker grabs a box of audilite and heads back to the basement entrance in order to meet up with the satellite expert unless someone has a reason to stop him.

Boko is sure to thank the escort.

"So pretty," she whispers to herself when she sees the audilite.

As for the Captain's orders, Boko is torn.  She's no good with a weapon, so it would make sense in her case to take two armfuls of the crystals.  But she'd have to spend precious time making her point to the Captain.  And risk his disapproval.

So in the end she thanks her lucky stars that simply following orders is what's expected... But what if that one armful she leaves behind is the difference between failure and success of the project?  Dozens or hundreds of lives could hang in the balance of this decision.  So Boko stifles a whimper as she picks up as many crystals as her two arms can carry, hoping the Captain doesn't notice.

As is his job, Nicholas has read all the personnel files on his officers. Not that he would need to in order to know how Boko would act if he confronted her about following orders to the letter. It would waste time even in the best case scenario.

When Tyrandis asks his question, Nicholas answers, "Nah. Just being prepared. There were riots outside even when we landed. No telling if they have gotten closer to our landing point." he then looks from Tyrandis to the others and says, "Lt Kel, watch our rear. Lt J'la, stay to our right. Prince Vein, to our left, if you would. And Ensign Owens behind me." thus forming a circle around Boko as they walk to the shuttle.

Maybe when the job is done, someone might reward Kra with his own personal audilite...

Tyrandis' phone notifies him of another note, but his hands are occupied at the moment.

When the group exits the building, they do hear the chaos as if it was closer now than it was earlier.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Although the riotous sounds are indeed closer now, the group is able to safely make it to the ship and soon after the Jeenosian techie meets with the group, the pilot takes off. Nicholas provides the techie with a space suit and has the group pay attention to the procedure of donning a space suit so that they will all be prepared to do so in emergencies.

Thankfully, it isn't complicated. You just jump into the jumpsuit, put on the bubble helm, press the button on the chest, and you're good to go.

The techie uses the airlock and goes to get to work with installing the audilite into the satellite.

Nicholas faces the others. "While this may be going smooth so far, I still question what could cause such a widespread problem. Worse; I expect whoever is responsible to get away. Lt Kel, I want you to continue to monitor Jeenose and any activity around the world. If the Synchronizer so much as senses a blip, pay it mind. Actually, I'd say especially if it is something small like a ship leaving orbit."

Nicholas then looks at Boko. "Ensign Owens, continue checking coms. Just because we've cleared things with the Jeenosian government doesn't mean we're done checking for signs of communication. And it was your checking in that brought us into the knowledge of the use of Audilite. So keep up the good work."

In Tyrandis' phone is a list of suitors. Ironically, someone listed from Planet Jeenose is one of the listed girls. But there are a number of others. Some from Vein's own planet, but most from places off-world and well-known to the Strife Alliance at large like Sharr, Bliss, Pirace, Tharia, Barrak, and Neplusultra. The list gives ranks, but each planet has its own ranking system.

Tyrandis eyes the space suits dubiously, hoping they have been well sanitised. He has never been overly fond of communal clothing or uniforms, and especially not ones where you are sealed inside with a previous sentient's body odors. Still, it is marginally preferable to death, so he gives the captain his attention as he explains the procedure.

He waits until the captain has finished before glancing at the list of suitors in more detail, paying particular attention to the suitor from Jeenose. He is trying to ascertain whether or not she is a off-worlder human, or if she is one of the natives. Not that he is xenophobic, of course. But since humans are the naturally superior species in the galaxy, it would hardly make sense to marry any other species. He assumes that his father's advisor is intelligent enough at least to understand this, but he has learned not to assume too much of the man's mental faculties.

"Thank you, Lt Kel." Nicholas says in response to Kra's update.

Kra does detect a small craft, as if on cue, launching from the surface of Jeenose and almost out of view. How it got as far as it did without already being detected is a mystery, but it is giving off an energy signature like it is preparing to enter warp.

Nicholas immediately orders to fire an EMP round at the craft. The craft is stopped dead in its tracks. "Alright. Let's get the Synchronizer to intercept the craft and contact its occupants..." (After all, he can't just abandon the techie outside)

But even as Nicholas as ordering these things, Kra receives input that the craft is already back online and preparing again to enter warp.

Meanwhile, the comms officer informs Boko that the occupant of the detected craft is not responding to any communication attempts.

(Tyrandis' info)
The suitor from Jeenose is, indeed, not human. She is clearly a monkey like the rest of her people. The political advantages include certain resources the Jeenosians have that are rare in most places, such as a highly conductive goo that is naturally produced by their geysers. But Jeenose isn't alone is having a non-human suitor.

Sharr has one of its cat-dog people the Deksharr as their suitor.
Barrak has one of its demon-looking people as the suitor, more specifically the winged type called Fou (Lt J'la is a wingless barrakian called a Korshare).
Bliss has one of its little bunny people as a suitor.
But Pirace, Tharia, and Neplusultra all have highly influential humans listed as suitors since all three of those worlds have many species on them.

Boko is tearing up again.  That someone would do this terrible thing on purpose is unthinkable, so her assumption is that whomever is in that craft must be a victim of unfortunate timing, having showed up just after the crisis and just before the Syncronizer.  That they're being treated as a suspect is making her heart sink.  That things got violent so quickly is terrifying.  That the craft isn't surrendering is only making things worse.

"N.. No response from the craft on coms, sir.  B-But they were just hit with an EMP."

Boko may not be pleased about this situation, but she knows the procedure verbatim.  She contacts the security officer and requests that a boarding party be prepared for a non-lethal capture operation.

Boko can hardly believe hear ears!  How did they get back online so fast?!  They... They were ready!  A grim spiral of snowballing outrage wells up within her.  It really was on purpose!  But that means...

Something inside snaps.  With a measured, hollow voice, Boko contacts the bridge, "Notify military command: 'Syncronizer only allied ship in range of unidentified EMP-immune craft.  Jeenose disaster possibly a deliberate act of war.  Engaging suspect.'  And notify any relief ships on the way...  Brace for combat.  Imminent arrival of invasion fleet likely.

"Full combat alert.  Prepare for Captain's orders to destroy the enemy."

Even if the blackout gunship is stopped, Boko fully expects these to be her final moments.  Any second now dozens of hostile ships will arrive.  Surrender will be refused.  A hail of incoming enemy fire will be the last thing she sees.  No possible chance at making such needless death worth something except...

Boko coldly advises the shuttle pilot, "Be ready for evasive maneuvers to draw enemy fire away from Jeenose."

He therefore directs his efforts into assuming an expression of practiced nonchalance, placing his left hand to his chin thoughtfully as he watches the ship that is the source of all the excitement.

The Synchronizer manages to fire a tracer onto the unidentified craft just before is vanishes into space at FTL speed. Nicholas calls the Synchronizer. "Follow that ship and tractor beam it. Pursue only for a minute. If it takes longer than that, return to Jeenose." Within half a second, so does the Synchronizer, leaving the group behind.

Nicholas says, "Good work. Whoever it is, they can't outrun the Synchronizer. And if they are meaning to bring an army as Owens is suggesting, then they must be stopped. Unfortunately, we will have to stay behind and leave that task to Commander Skyrise's capable hands."

The mechanic calls the shuttle, "I've got the satellite fixed and modified."

So the Captain has the mechanic return to the shuttle before heading back for the surface. "On the off chance this was sabotage leading to a war, then the sooner we can get Jeenose's planetary defense grid back up, the better. But just about nothing on Jeenose will be restored without power."

Boko receives a call from the Synchronizer comm. "The SA has received our mayday and are sending the Battleduster to Jeenose."

No invasion force?  The lack of eminent doom is slowly returning back to normal panic instead of emotionally bottomed out.  News of the assignment of the Federation flagship to the crisis helps some, but even so, one ship wouldn't have been able to hold off an entire fleet.  So presumably, unless the brass is completely stupid, there's dozens of other military ships on the way as well.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

The mechanics nods to Kra. "N-no... problem... this feels so unreal."

Captain Stalker glances at Tyrandis. "I don't have enough information yet to determine who is behind this. It is highly unlikely this person is acting alone, but for all I know they could be."

The Battleduster arrives. Soon after, the Synchronizer returns. The captain has the pilot head back to the Synchronizer. "Ensign Owens, find out if the Synchronizer caught the culprit or not. If not, get the details on why. Then patch me through to the Battleduster."

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Only Angel Bard has the technology and the lack of a soul to do such a horrible thing, Boko's thinking, None of the other... well Tharcon might.  How does Kra feel about that tyrant?  Victor would do it just for the giggles.  So on second thought, could be an alliance of some of the Eternity Lords.

"Yessir," Boko answers, sounding apologetic.

Should have anticipated The Captain's next orders and have done so already!  Boko is quick to catch up, though, if looking frustrated with herself in the process.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

The Battleduster's swift return at the very least means that the fleeing ship likely could not cause what has sent the whole planet below powerless.

Kra nods to the mechanic, "Most disasters can be like that, but so much more in situations like this where the damage is indirect."  You could see the aftermath of an earthquake or volcano from a distance within minutes.  Failed infrastructure takes longer before the disaster is picturesque enough to fish for awards filming.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Boko is informed that the culprit's craft was apprehended, but there was nobody inside.

Soon, the group is back aboard the Synchronizer and contacted by the Battleduster. Nicholas puts Captain Briggs on the screen and passes along what has been going on.

Once Nicholas finishes explaining, Captain Briggs says, "Strange. I'm going to check the perimeter for any signs of invasion, but if it were an invasion, you'd think the enemy fleet would have been here by now."

Nicholas nods. "My crew and I will be continuing work on getting Jeenose's grid back up. As soon as you have anything, lemme know."

Briggs says, "I will. Over and out."

Cpt Stalker looks to the others and says, "Thanks to the satellite being retrofitted for the older technology, we should be able to help Jeenose coordinate so they can get back on their feet quicker."

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Trusting the Captains to handle the military contingencies, Boko has stirred up the entire crew into a frenzy of activity for life-saving missions.  The medical crew preparing emergency first aid packages for the planet from reserve supplies to be delivered to those places without means of getting aid from the now un-powered native emergency services.  The engineering crew creating emergency power supplies for restoring critical infrastructures to minimal functionality.  The security teams organizing into squads to defend natives in those places where their own police cannot go yet.  Data systems crews working with sensory and communications to create priority location lists.  And so on.  Even the quartermaster is putting together care packages with blankets donated from the crew members' own quarters for people stranded in isolated and cold places.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Kra feels bad as far as this complicating lives and the mission, but still has that touch of optimism down to 'Not our screw up up' when it's the Battleduster coming up empty.

"I guess the second cynical expectation after an open invasion, would be over anyone surprisingly eager and ready to immediately provide relief efforts to this exact problem."  You know, besides themselves.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Tyrandis sends Kra Kel an approving nod.

"Setting up the whole situation to gain the glory of sweeping in to save the day? Yes, it would be quite a clever, if bold, maneuver, wouldn't it?"

If this is the case, then he almost feels bad for the one who went to all the trouble of setting up the situation, as the glory will not be going to them today. Not if Tyrandis has any say in it, anyway. He turns to Nicholas.

"Is there anything I can do to be of assistance, captain?"

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Nicholas answers Boko without hesitation. "Granted, Owens."

To Kra, Nicholas says, "Not much can be done about that. If people besides our own bring relief, I'll keep that in mind and have them investigated discretely." He doesn't mention investigating the Strife Alliance because that is the job of Internal Affairs and they will likely do an investigation after they read this report.

Finally, when Tyrandis speaks up, the Captain looks over at him. "How much of a relief effort do you believe you could bring over here from Lornst?"

Kra then notices a Blissian energy signature approaching. Based on the readings, likely a whole fleet.

Meanwhile, while the calls Boko patches ARE going through to Disaster Response HQ, Boko is receiving a call from Jeenose, requesting the Synchronizer specifically, rather than wanting to talk to Disaster Response HQ.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Boko is at first horrified by Kra Kel's suggestion, who could put lives at risk for the sake of gaining popularity?!, then deeply embarrassed, look who it is that's first to arrive 'surprisingly eager and ready to immediately provide relief efforts to this exact problem,' then extremely frustrated, how unfair if helping means you're a suspect for causing the problem!

Establishing the relay link was of course pre-emptively delegated to the comms officer, so Boko doesn't have to do anything in response to the Captain's permission.

"I-If I may, Sir, I've taken the liberty of writing up a quick press release for our esteemed guest to deliver to not only his own world, but to all in the Alliance.  I believe that his honorable example could easily trigger an avalanche of aid beyond the Alliance's basic emergency response."

As she takes the incoming call answering softly, "This is the bridge of the Synchronizer. How may I help you?" she offers a Sci-Fi paper-thin flex-screen to both the Captain and the Prince with the following displayed on it:

quote:
"By now you are aware of the crisis on Jeenose.  As a direct eye-witness, I cannot stress enough how dire the situation is.  It is imperative that the interplanetary community take decisive measures to address this grave crisis, setting aside what differences they may have, and offering immediate material assistance to Jeenose in its effort to respond effectively to the urgent needs of her people and visitors - some of whom may be your own citizens.

"By providing them with temporary shelter and the basic necessities of life, your spirit of generosity and solidarity will be seen by the eyes of all the systems most vividly.  Billions of people, including women and children, are in desperate need and every passing moment counts.  Not only is it the moral responsibility of the interplanetary community to act with promptness and sincerity, no single community, world, or alliance can survive and make progress in isolation.  As members of the one family of diverse peoples, we are dependent on one another.  Reaching out with respect for the innate dignity of all in this hour of need secures the future peace and security of all worlds."

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Well hardly anyone would ever suspect the Blissians, so downgrade his paranoid ideas to screen the SECOND biggest convenient rush of support in so little time?

"Captain, there appears to be a Blissian fleet approaching on sensors."

Kra could certainly go with skipping 'too good to be true' today.  But then, he already works on a ship where merely showing up is too good to be true for those they visit.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Tyrandis accepts the flex-screen and his gaze swiftly sweeps down the document. After a moment he gives an approving nod.

"It seems suitable," he agrees, "However I feel it could benefit from personal example. Perhaps something about myself pledging the resources of my home world. I can assure you Lornst stands ready to commit whatever resources are at our disposal."

Then that Blissian fleet arrives. Tyrandis' eyes narrow as he turns his attention to Kra Kel. At best this fleet is here to attack, meaning the chances of survival are slim. At worst, they are here to assist, meaning the chances of glory are slim. Tyrandis has no intention of giving up either his life or his glory without a fight.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Stalker skims over what Boko wrote, "Good job, Owens."

The Jeenosian who wanted to talk to the Synchronizer directly, now on with Boko, says, "Ma'am, I have a photo of the culprit behind this whole problem. I took a photo of him with my antique camera when he was visiting. I still need to develop the picture in my photo room, but by the time you send someone down here, I could have a photo ready for you to spread."

Meanwhile, Nicholas nods to Tyrandis. "Do what you think needs be done. Add what you like, but let Boko and I see the results before it is sent."

He then looks at Kra and then to the main viewscreen. "Hail the Blissians and put them onscreen."

The blissian onscreen is female. She has a high ponytail and long bangs that are barely combed away from her eyes to one side. She is wearing a light cyan robe. The different thing about her is that she has what looks like a pair of bat wings, except without the membrane (think like zerg sarah kerrigan from Starcraft). Her expression shows concern. When she speaks, her blissian accent is thick, "Greetings, Captain Stalker of the Synchronizer. I am Sage Carla Luutia. We are here in response to a sudden black-out on Jeenose. How can we help you?"

Nicholas says, "For now, just tend to the emergencies and remain available for contact."

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

A whole fleet!  Now this is the kind of response Boko was looking for!  And hopefully nobody is low enough to accuse the race of utopian peace bunnies of manufacturing the problem just because they were eager to help.  She's blushing from the Captain's affirmation, and overjoyed that the Prince not only approves but wants to take it a step farther by pledging 100% of his own world's available resources!  What an example!  Boko's eyes are welling up with tears for how relieved she is for the Jeenosians.

"We'll send a team right away," Boko hastily answers the Jeenosian on the line, assuming that Captain Stalker will assent to sparing the personnel for something this important.  If he doesn't, maybe he'll forgive her for being so presumptuous under the circumstances?  She speaks up a little so the Captain can hear what's going on.  "Your photo of the culprit could be vital.  Location, please."

Speaking of presumptuousness, Boko then mutes her mic so as not to confuse the Jeenosian when she addresses the Blissian with as intense a sense of urgency as she can muster without having another meltdown.

"All but pre-electronic technology on the surface is inoperable, including life-sustaining intensive care units.  We've been able to patch together wireless communication using aurucite, but preemie infants are dying even as we speak!  Please coordinate with our comms officer for the locations of the most urgent needs."

Kra doesn't expect Carla to be doing any favors for Tyrandis's first impression of 'harmless space bunnies'.  Most Blissians don't cause the narrator to make a Kerrigan reference.

Still, things are finally shaping up to have more options than 'head directly to biggest problem and hope for the best'.

Synchronizer Chapter 01: Introductions

Tyrandis, who has been quickly typing on his phone while Luutia has been speaking, passes the message back to Boko. He has not altered her message, but has appended a couple of short sentences to the end of the speech.

As members of the one family of diverse peoples, we are dependent on one another. Reaching out with respect for the innate dignity of all in this hour of need secures the future peace and security of all worlds.

"My own planet of Lornst has committed to dispatching ten million packs of emergency rations, as well as five hundred thousand temporary shelters. Let us stand shoulder to shoulder with Jeenose during this time of darkness, and let the indomitable spirit of the Alliance shine forth like an inextinguishable star."

"My people will do what I instruct them," he explains, "They do not need convincing."

Then he focuses on Boko's conversation with the Jeenosian.

"Request a verbal description of the culprit while we are waiting for the photo to be developed. If that photo fails, or someone assassinates our friend before we reach him, we will be left with nothing."

Nicholas examines the modified statement and then hands it back to Boko. "Approved. Get it circulated."

"Speaking of numbers..." he looks at Kra. "Get me an estimate on how many Blissians we've got helping us, and any future helpers as they arrive. If we keep track of how many helpers we have, we'll be able to know how much help we need in a given moment."

Another fleet arrives. This time a Strife Alliance fleet.

Meanwhile, Boko receives a description of a brown-haired human who oddly had yellow eyes like that of a Blissian.

"Y-Yessir!" Boko squeaks.

Wow!  The Prince Tyrandis is so amazing!  He must really be something, and his people just as noble, for it to be a forgone conclusion that they'll donate so much just on his say-so!

Oh good.  Saving time by communicating what she just heard on the com in her reply to the mystery person worked!

"R-right.  Good idea."

And that works as a reply to both the Prince and the Captain.  Boko displays for the Captain her spreadsheet of resource distribution that gets updated in realtime soon after the Strife fleet arrives.

"Brown-haired human who has yellow eyes like that of a Blissian.  Rodger that.  The team will arrive at your location shortly.  Please remain on the line."

Blissian eyes?  What could it mean?  A half-breed?  But that's so rare!  And the strange, scary bone-things in that Blissian lady's back.

Mic muted, Boko mutters, "This is starting to look suspicious.  What if there's a connection with the culprit and the strange looking 'Blissian' who just arrived?  Could it be a race of mimics?"

Just to be sure, she carefully checks that the Blissians were not given the location of this witness and sends the retrieval group a secret warning to be on the lookout for a brown-haired human who has yellow eyes like that of a Blissian.  And anything else out of the ordinary like that.  Which should cover creepy mutant Blissian look-alikes.

"On it sir." At least they could compare it to the (probably) inevitable staff roster file Carla will send over.

Bunny count sensors still make more sense than half the tricorder options in Star Trek... Though they may have meant ships, better get an exact read on that too across all claimed political labels.

"If you wanted to keep numbers directly around the planet down for a legitimate reason, there is always the risk of another power drain until we can determine the nature of it's cause."
