Re: OOC

yes i realize this isn't a tf forum.  i wanted to see what the char sheet looked like.  sue me.

Faction: [Red]Autobot[/Red] [Purple]Decepticon[/Purple]

Name:
Alternate Mode: (What you transform into)
Picture:
Function: (Examples: Prime's is Autobot Commander. Soundwave's is Communications Officer.)
Quote: "."
Size:
Weight: ?? Lbs.

Stats:
(No stat may exceed 8. You may have a maximum of 2 stats as high as 8. You may have a maximum of three stats at 7 IF you don't have any stats at 8. Otherwise, you may only have two stats at 7 and one stat at 8. Or no stats at 7 and two stats at 8. You have 44 points to divvy out among the stats. You must use all the points. Stats below 4 must be explained by things like "Speed 3 because he's strong and thus bulky".)

Strength        : 0
Intelligence    : 0
Speed        : 0
Endurance    : 0
Rank        : 0
Courage        : 0
Firepower    : 0
Skill        : 0

Group: (Example: Airialbots, Insecticons, etc. Does NOT include large groups like "Minibots" or "Seekers")

Description (Robot Mode):

Description (Vehicle Mode):

Background:
(This is mostly just so people can't suddenly say "I taught Prime how to use the Matrix" in the middle of RP or some such. So if you want such monumentous claims, you should put those claims here first so I can smack them down before RP gets ruined- errr... I mean so I can go over them with you. Yeah. ].] )

Personality:

Abilities:
(Stuff like "Tough Hide" go under Equipment, not here. This is where you put stuff like what your character can do, regardless of his weapons or equipment. Example: Hound can create holograms. If you remember the episode "Heavy Metal War", think of the Powerchip Rectifier.)

1.) -

2.)
-

Weaknesses / Limitations:
(Only one exception has ever been made to this: Megatron. Other than Megatron, ALL transformers have a weakness. Even Prime. However, it was rare to have more than one weakness. Examples include Ravage being weak to bright lights or Optimus Prime getting injured if his other parts get injured such as Roller or his trailer. Make sure this weakness is a physical one.)

1.) -

Weapons:
(Note: You must have weapons for both modes, but you can have a shared weapon as well. Example: Starscream has cluster bombs for his jet mode, but both his jet AND robot mode use his nulrays. Number of weapons is unlimited. Just make sure your weaponry makes sense.)

1.)
-

2.) -

Equipment:
(This is where you put things such as if you have a non-weapon accessory. Example: Jazz could switch out his hand for a grappling hook inside his arm. Extra armor counts if you want to mention it here as well. Pretty much, if it isn't an ability or weapon, but bears mentioning, it goes here.)

1.)

2.) -

Re: OOC

Faction: Autobot

Name: Heavy Duty (Believe it or not, no such TF exists according to seibertron.com)
Alternate Mode: Large Forklift
Picture: http://www.liftruckzone.com/im...ontainerLiftruck.jpg
Function: Maintenance
Quote: "But I just fixed that!"
Size: 25' long, (15' wide?)
Weight: 15 tons?

Stats:

Strength       : 8 (9? Brawn is a 9 and can lift 180k lbs in robot mode.)
Intelligence   : 6
Speed          : 4 (3? Top speed in vehicle mode is 30-40mph unloaded)
Endurance      : 7
Rank           : 4
Courage        : 5
Firepower      : 3
Skill          : 7

Group: None

Description (Robot Mode):
Massive lift tracks transform into long arms that nearly touch the ground, making Heavy duty resemble a gorilla.  His massive appearance is not just for show either.  He can lift (at least) 105,000 lbs.  Wears his tool box like a backpack if mobility is needed.

Description (Vehicle Mode):
Very large forklift.  Vehicle mode makes large heavy loads much easier to handle.  Carries his tool box on top of his fork blades.

Background:
Heavy Duty's claim to fame is that he was created to help build Metroplex.  Heavy Duty took pride in his work but once construction was complete he was given a new function: maintenance.  Heavy Duty soon learned to hate maintenance.  It was like having to re-build everything he'd worked so hard to build over and over again.  To escape from the monotony he applied to join the combat corps of the Autobots.  Although he was given a less than stellar recommendation by his foreman, he nagged the recruiter repeatedly until he was finally granted the chance to prove himself on the battlefield.  His skills as a repairman and the effectiveness of his unusual weapon shined far brighter than his personality, so he was allowed to remain a probationary soldier.

Personality:
Lazy beaver.  Though he loves to build, he needs a huge challenge like building Metroplex to get motivated.  Once he's built something, however, he expects it to magically remain brand-new forever.  This obviously will never be the case.  One could say that entropy is his arch enemy.  He invented his grenade launcher to escape a life of maintenance.  It employs non-lethal grenades because he hates maintenance so much the thought of damaging anything, even enemies, makes him wince.  Though not especially drawn to combat for it's own sake, it's an exciting diversion from the drudgery of his regular job.

Abilities:

1.) Balance - Not your typical clumsy strongman, Heavy Duty can balance maximum load at maximum height with some concentration.  Lighter loads he can practically juggle with ease.

2.) Technician - He helped build Metroplex.  He knows enough to be an effective field medic.

3.) Hand Trick - He can partially "transform" into vehicle mode by retracting his hands into his arms while holding his fork blades in order to lift maximum load objects to shoulder height with them.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

1.) Agile as a boulder - While not clumsy, Heavy Duty is a big bulky target and his huge tool box makes things worse.  Unless fighting from cover, Heavy Duty is essentially a sitting target, unable to dodge anything but the slowest of weapons.

Weapons:

1.) RPG Launcher - Resembling a drainage pipe with a handle, the grenade launcher itself is of very basic construction, built to make the deployment of oil-barrel sized rocket propelled grenades more accurate.  Each grenade is armed with an explosive charge and proximity fuse that spreads a non-lethal payload in a 50' effective radius around the first large object to come within 10 feet.  The maximum range is 200 yards.  Heavy Duty can only fire one of these massive grenades at a time.  If fired while in vehicle mode, he must transform to reload.
a.) Spider-web grenade - Spreads a extremely strong, elastic, construction grade adhesive on the battlefield and everything else in proximity.    Affected targets on the ground will be unable to fly or jump.  Targets on the ground with a strength of 5 or less will be immobile.  Those with a strength of 6 will have their land speed reduced by 6 points.  Those with a strength of 7 will have their speed reduced by 3.  Strength of 8 = -2 speed.  Strength of 9 = -1 speed.  Strength of target also determines other side-effects like being unable to transform.  Glue remains effective nearly indefinitely unless an oil-based solvent is used to remove it.
b.) Blinding Grenade - Explodes in an extremely bright flash, spreading the dry chemical payload over the battlefield that smolders for several minutes creating a thick cloud of smoke, making targeting for those affected extremely difficult.  Targets with a skill of 5 or less will be unable to tell ally from enemy and are better off not firing at all.  The blinding effect of the flash usually wears off in about a minute or two.  Generally has the effect of scattering an enemy squad unless they have a clever leader.  Can also be used as a smoke screen to cover an escape if allies are given warning to shield their eyes before the flash goes off.
c.) Slick acid grenade - Explodes an oil-acid mixture onto the battlefield that acts like an oil slick, making combat maneuvering extremely difficult.  Targets with average agility will likely be unable to stand up.  More agile targets will have their evasion reduced by approximately 50%.  Those that can fly are largely unaffected by the slipperiness if they manage to take off before slipping.  Any acid that gets between joints will damage sensitive internal components, effectively reducing all physical attributes by 1 point.  The liquid is flammable and if ignited will do minor damage and will burn out in 10-20 minutes.  The oil-acid liquid acts as a solvent and nullifies the effect of the Spider-web grenade.  Submersion in water removes the acid.
d.) EMP Grenade - This grenade is the "hail Mary" of Heavy Duty's arsenal.  He empties nearly all his remaining energon into the grenade and then fires, passing out shortly after.  The EMP shock wave reduces the endurance of affected targets by 3 points and reduces their ability to recover endurance to zero for about a day.

a: Entangling grenade: Aoe immob 30seconds mag 3, -10 fly, -13% flyspeed, -18% runspeed, -50,000%jump, -13% rech (30 seconds)
b: Flash grenade / smoke grenade: AoE -perception 90%, -accuracy 5% (60 seconds)
c: Glue grenade: -recharge 20%, -spd 95%, -10flight, -50,000%jump (30 seconds)
d: Ice grenade: mag 3 single target HOLD 15seconds, -spd 13%, -rech 13%, jumpheight -38%,
e: poison gas arrow?: (20 seconds) -dmg 20%, sleep 11seconds?
d: acid grenade: minor DoT, -evasion 20%, -armor 15%, (20 seconds)
e: disruption resonator: location AoE -armor 15%, (30 seconds)
f: oil slick arrow: location AoE (30 seconds) knockdown, -runspeed 95%, -evasion 25%, (possible fire DoT)
g: EMP grenade: (30 seconds) AoE, Mag 3 hold, -40% end, -1000% regen/recovery, (totally drains endurance and recovery of user)

2.) Fork Blades - The blades of his vehicle mode can double as ineffective blunt "swords" when in robot mode.  Heavy Duty strongly prefers ranged non-lethal attacks and has never used these as weapons in combat.  (Satisfies the "all TFs must have a melee weapon for some mysterious reason" law.)

3.) Laser pistol - Standard issue side-arm.  Satisfies the "all TFs must have a weapon as effective as a squirt gun for some reason" law.  Used once.

Equipment:

1.) Tool box - About the size of a Optimus Prime's trailer, this huge rectangular box looks more like a building than a tool box.  It was blown up once, so Heavy Duty learned to heavily re-enforce it with armor plating.  It can now be used as effective cover for himself and two others.  Inside the tool box are the following:

2.) 100ton hydraulic jacks. - For propping up massive machines that need serviced from underneath.

3.) Load adapter - Enables Heavy Duty to grasp loads from above and/or extend the load forward slightly depending on it's weight.

4.) Repair kit with replacement parts - Can come in handy for battlefield first aid.

5.) RPG Grenades - They're just too big to be kept anywhere but the tool box.

Re: OOC

Those are some nice Charsheets so far. I had an interesting thought for Faction. What if each race had only ONE special ability that set them apart? Example, a feline might have something called "Perfect Balance" where they "always land on their feet" or some such. And all the other things that come with being a cat (Such as diabolical urges to play with yarn) are listed under details rather than abilities.

Good to have yah Jacqueline.  I need to get around to more than vague outline for Joe one of these days and actually put it up, but I’ve had a combination of heavy procrastination, and not wanting to overdo Starting Char legalities once MR. GM decides on them, even if odds are good things would be Okay'd now.

Heh, glad to finally be a part of Faction, though it seems like it'll be awhile until things get sorted out enough for us to start ;) I'm sure there'll be a lot of debate on *where* to start.  I wonder if "A Struggle for Hope" started out like this?

Anyways, I'm sure that I'll have to change some of my info eventually, but I wanted to put that up as a way to say to everyone "Hi all! I'm here!"

Re: OOC

Went ahead and posted the racial info I've been writing in the Races thread. Feel free to peruse and give input. These are 3 of the many invented races in Faction (As opposed to normal races like cats, dogs, foxes and so on). I have WAY too much info on Blissians to put up in the Race thread...

Any thoughts on the future of how this RP should be run is GREATLY appreciated and needed. Finding a good way to balance characters is key as far as who can play what... but figuring out where this all takes place will probably be the biggest challenge. I'm starting to figure one of the Neutral Sectors would be an excellent place to set this RP in. I'll put more info up on the various sectors at another time, but until I do... please give feedback and thoughts.

Re: OOC

Nice reading with the latest race updates.

And yeah, it would be a bit awkward if the entirety of the small player base were in different ends of the universe.

I had been wondering about a certain aspect of the tech analyzation situation.  Yes, Blissians have all forms of tech, even what they've carried around, with others unable to get their hands on or figure out for a freaking long time, and nothing anybody does (with hopeful special skill based exception) is going to change that.

So, how does one prevent their own gear from being taken, and figured out through examination or just observations of its use without the 'It's Cannon, that doesn't happen' style defense in their favor?  It's going to be hard enough technologically competing with Blissians without access the access to 'oh, those are hard to get / cost a zillion credits' materials they got.

Of course, with my own concerns on balance, I might not even go for the particular skill this would matter with in the first place.  Compared to some things out there, Initial figureings I've wondered if they could manage.  But when compared to more sane Char details such as Mittens and Jacqueline, it looks like overkill, heh.

Latest update: Took the word "Familiar" out of the application form since most anyone playing this RP will be familiar with space for the most part. Also, added Kelsie's character sheet to the Blissian thread, deleted the history section in the same thread and gave Joe access to "Group 1".

Re: OOC

Jotting some thoughts on how to tone down the uber races.
Barakian weaknesses:
*Large.  Makes for an easy target.  Tends to lose gunfights for this reason.  They prefer melee anyway.  (Maybe most side arms can K-O a standard person in 1 shot, but it takes 2 in quick succession to take down a Barakian...  which isn't that hard to do given the size of the target.)
*All Thumbs.  Hands that are generally much clumsier than other races by comparison.  Barakian tailors are quite rare.
*Bulky.  Not as agile as most other races.  Mostly due to being heavier.
*Uninventive.  Almost all the tech is alien to the race.  Their greatest minds were just barely able to figure out how to reproduce captured technology.  There has never been an original Barakian technological invention in the many years since first contact.

Cost of a character

*Having an elite character will leave one with some limitations such as:  they do not own a ship?  They're only allowed to act if ordered by their superior officer 'cause you can't get very leet without specialized training from a major organized force?
*Having an elite ship leaves one with a gimpy character?  -.-
Afterthought: maybe bypass the whole "armed ship encounters" idea to avoid complicating things?  "Star Wars Miniatures" is an entirely different game from "Star Wars Miniatures Starship Battles" with two separate rule BOOKS.  Hard enough to make rules for the one idea without trying to squeeze in balancing issues regarding armed ships.  *Imagines a miniature of JarJar Binx standing on top of a star destroyer vs. Darth Vader standing on top of a scout ship.*

Blissian Generosity
Without the Dekshar race acting as a go-between, the Blissians race would likely have wound up enslaved by one or more alien race.  Even so, certain Blissians managed to slip under the radar and shared certain technologies, such as stun weapons, shielding tech, and life-saving medicines in spite of being forbidden by the Dekshar.  In exchange for sharing, the Blissians got what they wanted: much smaller death tolls between alien races fighting each other.  Though the Blissians are technically the weakest race militarily, the Dekshar are the strongest militarily and defend the Blissians fiercely, partly due to a protective parent mentality and partly in order to keep a tight grip on the technological edge that a close bond with the Blissians brings them.  Most Blissians who leave the planet are required by Dekshar law to either be accompanied by, or travel in, a heavily armed Dekshar ship both for the protection of the Blissian and to prevent any further technology leaks to alien races.  The Dekshar also act as financial overseers between the Blissians and outside races.

Bliss-Fu
Upon the insistence of the Dekshar, Blissians relented to the need for a form of self-defense.  All Blissians who leave Bliss are required by Dekshar law to master a form of Aikido, and become skilled in the use of a stun weapon.  Law can't force a Blissian to make use of those skills, however...

Re: OOC

Heh, it wasn’t even how well armed I was considering ship wise (Well, shields and armor probably count towards the general area actually?), and more the ‘I can actually keep stuff in my ship and move around inside it!’ aspects.

While the link to Kelsie ship image didn’t work out, the wonders of remembering what it looked like and search boxes for reminders does make one wonder how they get anything done or keep their stuff in it (granted, her listed gear probably isn’t very big).  And using a ship as anywhere you’d live and work would be a tad impossible at the 'only room for seating' Space Man Spiff scale.

Joe’s going to have to memorize where every workshop and hotel in the universe is it seems... Wait, no.  Still impossible to have his stuff along to do anything there, as he wouldn't have anything to bring it with.  May have to ask Kelsie how she gets any personal inventing done on the go unless she drops everything to go home every time they need to build something in private, heh.

Of course, now I'm also having an amusing mental image of Mittens (and probably Joe on occasions) trying to figure out how to get their bounty back to wherever with A) No ship. Or B) Single seater.

Re: OOC

Don't let Kelsie's ship fool you. One Blissian might want a mobile lab the size of a lab. And another might want a cramped ship like Kelsie has. Blissians don't have resources to worry about, but they only grab what they need and a little of what they want. :P

No worries... you'll have a ship big enough. You just won't be the James Bond does a fusion dance with a mad scientist you wanted to be. But on the flipside, I'm gunna be nerfing entire races, so I don't think that will be a problem for you.

Updated rules with Rule #1 being fun! :)

Also updated the race section in a somewhat major way. Please tell me there is a way to keep Barrakians as a playable race? Balance is a hard thing to accomplish in a space setting when you have so much variety. That said, I'm adding a Barrakian thread to flesh them out with you guys.

Also updated the "Who's Who" thread with changing the "Pirate Lords" to their more official title of "Eternity Lords" as well as inserting Angel in there.

Also, I'm adding a Thread for the Cannon Characters. Feel free to comment on them and or offer advice. Also bear in mind the ones I have on that thread are NPC people who will range from "I see this person whenever I want" to "You better have special clearance from the top to see this person"

Things that came to mind just as I was skimming over race thread before headin to unconscious land.

Coalwren soul vision. So… What are the implications of this for Androids?  On the less game implications, more amusing contemplation angle, would Darkthorne’s cause mass blindness, or be undetectable considering their tendencies?

Fae angle.  While good for concept, month long hibernation would basically mean ‘okay, time to stop playing your char for a few years RL’ once it came up.

On the human details, maaaay want to remove my ‘Humans can work it Blissian tech style’ comment you’ve left in there until things are cleared up.  As fun as it would be to keep that there for ‘I can TOTALLY do that’ reference.

Re: OOC

Shadow is Daemon from SFH, just fyi. Also, the soul vision is simply the ability to see a soul and it's colors. So for an android? Most times, no. There wouldn't be anything there. And in this theme, unless you create a race of 'droids who were made that way by one of the gods or something, no androids will have souls.

As for Darkthornes, I'd say it wouldn't be bright or undetectable. Just would have a lot more of a specific color in it than most people would have. Once I figure out what colors mean what for a soul, I can tell you (Or better yet, you can tell ME) what the dominant color would be.

On a side note, my friend David wants to join the forum as a half-coalwren wolf who hates Blissians. Dunno if he'll ever join, though, thanks to his recent invite to a college in Florida.

Re: OOC

For Android implications I was more considering the whole 'don't want people to know what they are at a glance' situation you described to me before for some of em.  A definite 'non functioning for OC's secret ID vs cannon powers' vibe there.    As I don't really see the problem of not having a soul (had I been going with a droid, I don't think they would notice a difference is someone shoved one in him without his asking) for chars.  It's dealing with those who consider souls a big deal that's the catch in many cases.

Hey all :) Timothius' ISP is being a bit of pain, so he asked me to post something about how the RP is going to start up.

I was personally curious about how he was going to manage to get us all together in one place in the beginning, and he gave me this sensible response:

"Yes. I'm going to start it on a colony on a planet in one of the neutral areas of space. The planet will be a recently discovered one that has multiple factions wanting a piece of it (Well really... they all want the whole thing), but for now, to settle agreements, they have reps from their respective factions on this settlement complete with competitions and such..."

That seems to be a pretty good way to start things off :) Personally, though, I think we're both curious as to what ideas anyone else has for how to start off the RP and get us connected.

Re: OOC

Heyo!  My character just got created, and I'm working on an intro, which I may need help with.  C.H.A.D. is a genetically altered human for sale in the black market, and it'd be difficult for me to move the story along unlees someone buys him either accidentally as part of a stasis unit where he'd be stored until 'needed', or in an open slave market where he'd be advertised a a sort of "Slighty used merchndise.".  So if someone wants to volunteer to buy a defective gene-boosted soldier we can work out an intro.  n.n

Jacqueline is the only one around here who has that kinda money, but why purchase a war clone?...  Unless you'd like him to be accidentally released in an NPC deal gone sour - which could easily happen given the pirate controlled colony the opening scene is located.  Or maybe "rescued" by an ill-directed, unfettered sense of adventure in a certain crazy cat I know... ;P

Yeah, that's one issue.  I also considered that if he were left in a stasis pod that everyone thought empty, and the stasis pod was sold as used equipment.  then the price would go down considerably and someone would get a suprise when they start opening thier new eqipment.  And cruel master or no unless he was dismissed he'd stay around and endure what was dished out at him, making him kinda hard to kidnap.

Re: OOC

I suppose not being able to indicate that it’s currently in use would be a good reason to sell something as ‘used’.  Just like selling those cars with bad brakes off the used lot.  Though points in the pods favor that it still works even in such shoddy condition, which would be the kind of quirk that could attract Joe's attention.

T’shock also already has a stasis pod on the ‘well, that reason wouldn’t work’ lines.  Joe might pick one up for the hell of it, and regardless of being able to tell ‘wait, there’s someone already in there’ he might pick the thing up if all else fails.

The downside should things default to Joe (if it could be considered that) would be the complete lack of orders giving.

Yay for finally posting Lucky's char sheet!  He was originally from Faction, and this version is based on one of my favorite RPs he was in combined with another concept I've been wanting to either build a character on or include in an existing one.  Hopefully this'll be much less emo than the SFH version and more like his true nature.

Joe: "He had been considering both why they would need to bring the whole thing with him..."

Grinch: "Why, my sweet little tot," the fake Santy Claus lied,
"There's a light on this tree that won't light on one side.
"So I'm taking it home to my workshop, my dear.
"I'll fix it up there. Then I'll bring it back here."

*Grin*  "This" thing that Nono wants to take with him is a visibly charred, presumably proprietary, component that fits in one hand.  It's quite possible that Nono is wrong in assuming such a part would take 6-8 weeks to replace if ordered from the manufacturer and that said proprietary component isn't readily available for sale at the local Radio Shack.  If he's not wrong he'd much rather remake the part from scratch himself than try and make a more readily available "universal component replacement kit" fit.  :p

Safety?  I figure if a real bird can safely land on a high power line, a fictional flying moogle mechanic can safely remove a component that powers an LCD display without too much logic bending.  (Of course one has to overlook the whole "how the heck do those tiny bat wings support a 3' bunny?" problem.)  o.o;

Apologies

I'm sorry for not posting yet, but I feel I should say that I don't know what to post now because I am deeply confused...

There are folks who are talking to me in the past but then things that are going on in the future.  I don't want to ignore the characters that were talking with me in the past, but I can't take care of that entire conversation in a single post by myself... Sorry to break the flow like this, but I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me some advice on how to handle this.

Do I drop the conversation that was started in the past and continue as if in the future, or do I try to wrap up the entire past conversation on my own, making the assumption that no one has anything more to say? Or do I somehow keep posting in the past and the future until the conversation is finished?

As I said, I am deeply confused...

Re: Apologies

My take on what's goin on:

Jacqueline thinks to herself, "Well that went well.  I get a 2 for 1 deal, the mole-bat is gunna work for me for free, and I might even get to empty everyone's pockets at my casino soon enough.  I'll just relax and bask in my victory while the commoners finish up their conversations.  Then I can pose my exit."

C.H.A.D. thinks to himself, "I can't WAIT to pose in!  Oh!  Looks like the deal's done!  Jacqueline's wrapped things up well enough and the others can resolve their conversations on their own time, no need to wait for them.  OK!"  *Typing sounds* "(Skipping Ahead...)"

Nono reads Jacqueline's post and thinks to himself, "ME?!  In a CASINO?!  What do I say?  What would I wear?  By invitation only?  Wow...  Bow tie minimum I guess, but I can't leave my tool belt behind...  Gotta figure out what to say to her, it'd be rude to refuse..."  (Reads C.H.A.D.'s post)  "Well that was sudden.  Guess it's time to hurry up to the scene where C.H.A.D. poses in.  Can't blame him, he's had to wait 48 poses already.  OK I'll try and help move things along by wrapping up here and summerizing the 'gawking at T'Shock's ship' scene...  Wonder if Joe and T'Shock will want to play that one out or go along with my summary?"  "It would be my pleasure..."

Lucky thinks to himself, "She's shrewd, well dressed, and good looking.  No way am I skipping ahead to the future without first introducing myself to her.  Maybe I can talk her into having a lunch scene with me.  All goes well, either I'll get a small profit off her future casino's success for more brownie points with Ollen, or a short-term girlfriend, or both!  It shouldn't be too disruptive of C.H.A.D.'s plans if I play out my lunch scene while Nono and the others have their 'gawking at T'Shock's ship' scene."  "Casino you say?..."

T'shock & Joe: "Looks like everyone's skipping ahead to the repair scene.  Fine.  I'll play along.  Lucky and Jacqueline weren't talking to me anyway."

Nono: "So they didn't play out the ship scene.  That's cool, I already posted my idea of how it'd go anyway.  Lucky and Jacqueline can have their conversation on their own time now that the rest of us have posed out of the shop scene."  "Kupo-ho-ho!..."

That's my take.  Sorry for any part Nono or Lucky had in derailing the flow, was trying to do the opposite.

Re: Apologies

Mitts' assessment of me and Joe is accurate. So... just pose in the future, Jaqu, and summarize the past if you so wish. For future reference, though, everyone, please try to not skip ahead in the middle of conversation. And to an extent, I feel it was partly my fault not only for NOT stepping in and saying "Wait what?", but for posting T'shock initiating a conversation. We can even retcon T'shock saying anything to Jaqu if that makes the universe happier.

Once CHAD has entered RP, I think things like this should not have to happen again. And once I add in my army of Faction alts, flow should be much like in SFH.

Re: OOC

Faction is still in the stages of being made to fit the mold of RP and I'm wondering which direction to go. I know how some of you feel about simple and complex, but I want input. General input. What you'd like to see. What you like so far. What you dislike so far. That said, I'll share what's been on my mind.

I've concluded the original storyline is too RP unfriendly. I've also decided it's outdated anyway, so consiquently, that means I have allowed myself to open my mind to any and all things being changed in the original storyline. An example, of course, is the fact Blissians turned a number of you off due to them being technologically superior. Before I revise other races, I want to know, does it matter if a non-player race is superior to other races in every way? Or for that matter, a non-player character (Such as Angel Bard)? In the real world, there is always someone bigger, better and/or smarter than you or I. Or there are morons who happen to be rich, so all the skill and smarts in the world won't matter compaired to the dozens or even hundreds of people he found better than you and hired to kill you.

While I understand this is fiction, there is only so far the fairness of player equality can reach before it becomes silly. A planet-sized ship being beaten to submission by one person, for instance, because my players demand I treat what amounts to the Death Star as something the player's character or at least his resources are equal to. In the end, the only way to make everyone equal would be to turn this into Dragonball Z and say that you all can destroy planets at a whim and can block planet-destroying shots for a period of time. Nature is powerful and physics generally prevents such things as equality.

Where is the balance between fun/fiction and downright silly/unrealistic in every sense of the term? Personally, while I'm happy that I can revise the Blissians and make them more down-to-Earth thanks to the various comments I've gotten, I just want to know how I can make this place the most fun without either overdoing it or not doing enough. As such, I've been considering going with a dice system via GURPS, but I don't want to bring dice into a game like this one if possible. And even then, no dice system is perfect. (Actually, far from it. The more I look into dice games, the more I find those games to be little more than gambling. Fun in it's own right, but not my idea of how Faction goes)

What I want: Heavy character interaction (Which is a given in RP), Intricate story (Hopefully too intricate for any one person to fully get unless they collect all the pieces in play), Fair equality for player characters, freedom to make unfair NPCs.

Currently, the races in question include the Barrakians (though as often as I'm seeing tall people, I don't think that's a problem anymore), Angelicans, Black Galaxians and Aqulans. The factions in question would include people like Night Dreamers, Base3 and any organization from the races listed above.

My intent is fun. But I feel like like I'm walking on eggshells every time I think to include something challenging or some important character. Sometimes, your character does not have to overcome. To quote a character from Babylon 5 who was on his death bed: "You were very funny. Everything to you was a problem to be solved, a test to be passed. But you know, Stephen, sometimes the test is not to find the answer. It's to see how you react when you realize there is no answer."

Re: OOC

I've got no prob with uber NPCs or uber non-playable races.  It's when players have access to a race/class/whatever that makes all the others look feeble by comparison that I think a game has been spoiled.

Example of a bad system: Star Wars d20 RPG.
Jim: "Hey everyone!  I'm Jim."
Room full of Jedi: "Hi Jim.  Who's your Jedi Master?"
Jim: "I'm a scout..."
Room full of Jedi: "...BWAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!  A SCOUT!  That's rich!"  *Force Jim to make a fool of himself with Jedi mind tricks*

Example of a good system: Struggle for Hope.
Ra: "Hi everyone.  I'm Ra."
Room full of teddybears: "Hi Ra.  Which freedom fighter group are you from?"
Ra: "FREEDOM FIGHTER?!  DIE IN THE NAME OF ROBOTNIC!"  *Breaths Fire!*
Room full of teddybears: "Aaaah! A super powerful NPC!  Run!"  *Flees to hopefully some day take down this ONE NPC with every single player working together.  If they're lucky.*

Re: OOC

It wasn't the straight 'tech superior' with the Blisisans.  As that alone is something any given NPC or PC can do with some of their own stuff (Magitech crystals on one end, unspecified advance power source on my end).  The 'near everything else too' was the snag there that gives any given NPC Blissian a whole lot going for them, let alone them as a whole.  And a lynch mob if you scratch one.

Of course as our only PC example of a Blissian shows, they can be reasonable.  If Elana was a Fox/Human/Moogle/Dinosaur would her setup really be considered unreasonable? (Blissian resources perk aside).

As I often do, I was wondering if my own char had too much stuff off and on.  How does your own durable ship and small scale manufacturing capacity measure up to limited access to large organization/worlds resources?  And Joe feels, to me at least, like he got a better deal than T'Shock, and even Elana despite the Bodyguard and Blissian status.

I can understand Base 3 and whole organizations vs one PC being a 'well DUH that’s hard to deal with'.  Having no chance personally against single individuals can iffy depending on the situation.
Lets see, Angel knows kung Fu and is a crazy good shot?  Raise your hand if you've never seen that on a PC or your PC before.  And there is the Mitten's mentioned Group of PC's has a chance to deal thing.  It's when you get to stuff where you pretty much have to run crying to the designated NPC's or PC class that it gets bad.

Angelicans and Black Galaxians...  That’s when PC's have to weaponize Original Sin or something in order for PC's to deal without literal 'praying for salvation'.  Hey, technically it's from God and it sure won't run out any time soon if things like Angels are around.

Well, as tempting as such can be I don't see it working out.  Reminded of Team Unity's attempt to walk twenty feet back the way they came being a no go due to Team Other Guys taking so long.

And that was a single, one character player in one thread being slow.  If the chronically slow are in one location, then too bad for everyone else in that thread that doesn't have alts elsewhere, if things can be managed around the slow thread in the first place.

With the potential of slowness spread across every thread via alts and players, eh.  Better to not bother splitting the threads and hope the crushing forces of Guilt™ speed them up than go 'you, slow people. you stay over there'.

Final Fantasy is technically Japanese, so who knows, maybe I could), is still a very welcome addition to RP.

I just wanted you all to know that the now 17-year-old baby of mine Faction is made quite fun in this forum because of you guys. :) And with a new chapter in this forum having been opened, it's feeling newer and fresher each day. Thanks again, all!

Same here, Timothius :) Happy that you're enjoying our input so much!

Really, I'm enjoying it too. Faction just seems so wide and open... the perfect place to play in and explore. It's actually inspiring enough that I've tried writing little pieces on my own for Jacqueline, just to play with the setting further.

Thanks for sharing all of this with us

Walter:
...Two, their one tough guy, Billy, claims to know Piressan culture....

Two examples I can give for this:  One, my elder bro is married into a family from India for many years but was still surprised by things he learned about their culture when he visited India with them.  Amusingly, even his in-laws got sick from the food.

Two, I spoke with a lady who said she was from West Africa when I asked what nation she's from.  Then later said she was from Ghana.  "So... which nation is it?  West Africa?  or Ghana?"  "Don't you know know Africa?  Ghana and West Africa.  America has states, right?"

Ghana is a nation, but she was comparing it to a state because the meaning of the word state can also mean nation.  "United States" may as well be "United Nations" to some.

Re: OOC

Lucky's player and I had an interesting discussion after I read this latest OOC from him. :) Part of that discussion included me pointing out "But the Blissians aren't geniuses anymore" to which he said "But they have the reputation of being such due to their advances in science. People just don't think about the fact that Blissians advance thanks to getting along and not warring." Me: "Interesting. So Walter is guilty of the very same thing he's laughing inside at Billy for" Him: "Yes."

Also as an interesting side note, Billy DOES have some tough-guy to him (He has to be to handle his wife, believe me), but he's not a tough guy like we picture one. He's only one part confrontational cowboy, but two parts smirking rogue in the shadows who hides in plain view. Anyway... so as Lucky pointed out in Walter's post, I strongly aim to make cultures diverse in this setting, to where clumping a planets' worth of people into a preconception is still silly. :)

Re: OOC

Sort of. There are Blissians who are downright creepy (Billy in the OLD storyline was creepy as Hell and had his own theme music. Changed him a bit for this one.) such as Carla (Not to be confused with my cherub character), but many would probably consider such Blissians adorable at first anyway due to sheer looks and the fact Blissians have certain habits just that ingrained into them.

Roger Xalitron, the guy you saw on the Blissian news, who discovered this nice ore on Bliss? Again, in the old storyline, he was one serious tough guy and lost a lot of faith in most anything, so he wound up grizzled kinda like Stanton in my "Heroes of Shame" comic. So sure, if you think a bunny is cute when it smokes, talks tough and can drink with the best of them, he'd still be adorable.... so like I said. Sort of.

Other examples we dreamed up were:

or my favorite:

Re: Character Select Screen?

Sad to see Elena/Nash/Jacqueline go, but sadder still is the fact this whole plot is kinda gone from my mind as a result. Frankly, between those three characters and the roles they played, I would have to RP out those characters for him. Which as neat and rich as his characters are, I'd rather not do. So I'm doing a reboot.

This is everyone's chance to remodel their characters. I'm likely going to have this start on the same place: The Rush Settlement on planet X, owned by the Tharians.

Any input here in OOC for what you'd like to see in RP, though, is greatly appreciated and will be strongly considered.

Re: Character Select Screen?

Joe asked a question Chris frequently asks me concerning Faction (and Joe tends to ask this frequently concerning ANY RP, more or less); What does Tim want to do in Faction?

The answer is that I would like to play my Faction characters one way or another. Every time I've played Faction, the cannon characters pop up somehow because I wanna play them that badly. And to be honest, I'm a little torn between whether I wanna actually play out what would be in the comic, or play an alternate universe from what would be in the comic.

The comic WILL be different than what I've written for it originally. That much, I've decided. Sooo...

First, I wanna make sure. Nobody minds if I put their characters in a comic that I intend to sell? I'm pretty sure the answer is "Yeah, Tim, I would totally mind you putting my character in an awesome sci-fi setting. *sarcasm*" or some such, but I wanna make sure anyway as I know how some are protective of their characters regardless.

Second, we would likely have to make adjustments to the characters so they'd fit. Such as making the moogle something that isn't a moogle. Much as I love moogles, they are copywrite material.

Third, for Tim to be able to play all his characters from all Factions, I would probably like for each of us to have characters from all Factions. In Joe's case, if alt-itis is a problem, he could probably play his one character as someone who goes to all Factions for one reason or another. Or more than one character who does so. Or one character who does, while one character stays with one Faction. Chris has many alts in various factions already (Philip in the Underground, Garnor working for Angel, etc).

I would like to make a comic from our RPs. All thoughts on it appreciated.

Re: Character Select Screen?

DnD wise, 'oh hey, I want to try this class' plus all my alts being separated by different threads helped in that case.  Normal wise not so much when it comes to the ideas, plus I tend to brainlock when I have alts in the same scene.  So while I could probably think up more than one character (just HOW many factions are there again in this game for that again?) for here given time, less confident in having them interact with eachother (as it is, Metron and Junker sort of pretend their Autobot/Decepticon conterparts don't exist).

Always polite and good form to ask permission for using other people's characters, even it seems a safe bet (yes in this case).  Fine with it myself.  I'd say our RP's and any ensuing comics based off them are totally non-cannon.  Much easier to deal with that way for all involved.

Joe's in the 'self employed, but trying not to break the law too flagrantly' area.  Plus some better insight of what's expected from the game and us could help me tweak them better to suit it possibly. (as it is I'm intending to scale down his ship a bit...  Yes my logic makes no sense even to me after the effort I went to have one at all, the others showing up with ships that made mine look like a Happy Meal Toy).

Alt wise, if I made any piratey alts It'd probably be an Educated Dumb Muscle Korshare Barakian.  I'd fully expect them to get hit by the Worf Effect plenty.  Though at least he'd have a bit more focus than Joe concept wise.

Thought dump:
Tim suggested 2 separate threads for comic ideas and "just for fun" rp.
I asked if he could make a comic from D&D heroe's guild and he nodded.
Perhaps rp as comic panels, not chars.
Remake Empress of Strife?  Cyber Sarah last I recall.  Does that really work?
Concerns about Joe-Chris argen especially over "balance" issues.

Separate thread for RP that doesn't get the "this will be used for the comic" stamp seems to be the consensus.  If Tim can make a comic out of random RPs such as what happened with D&D Heroes Guild, then the RP thread need not have any structure to be contributing to actual future comic.

RP as panels.  Just a thought, if in the actual comic thread if one gets made, is that the contributors not be restricted to one character but rather adds to the story by writing what should be in the next panel of the comic.  Could go all out and even have an actual comic book page layout and write into it like the pros do.  Assuming that's how the pros storyboard stuff.

Remake Empress of Strife alliance.  Didn't get any nods or headshakes on whether Tim wants to keep the leader of Strife as a robot disguised as a Teddy Bear.  Me, I'm not fond of seeing Sarah in that light.

Last and most important bit.  Joe-Chris argen.  Tim recommended discussing over the next 4 days.

Reminders of things discussed:

Perhaps main protagonist is someone else like Angel or Emerald?
Tim needs to create cell phone reminder to work on Faction comic on a regular basis.  Tim will need to instigate.

Thoughts today:  Need to research classic Scifi for inspiration.  Specifically Scifi targeted to kids.  Avoid Me Am Play Gods.  Look to history for story ideas.  Specifically the cold war or any other historical political web with innumerable factions jostling for power.  Perhaps Biblical histories.

In the process of redesigning Tom, I came across something interesting.

I tried replacing his cheek fur with a more scruffy appearance and remembered I gave his "older" self a scruffier look. I remembered I loved how his older self looked... more than his younger self. So there's gotta be something to that.

So yeah... reassessing who my main characters are could help a lot.

Re: Character Select Screen?

Best way for us all to play together and take the whole "deep space" thing to the max, is for us all to be part of a rag-tag crew (Like in Cowboy Beebop) of explorers (maybe bounty hunters. Maybe both.)

We all share the same ship so balance on that issue isn't an issue anymore. I proposed this idea to Joe, along with the idea the ship isn't even fully ours yet (we're giving payments once a month based off the income we pull from our exploring and bounty hunting).

I decided against RP dictating the comic series, but if I like what we RP, nothing says our rag-tag crew can't make a cameo once. Especially since I will likely have some cannon characters make cameos in RP here.

Either way, I'm wanting to think up a character for this crew and will probably be strongly leaning towards one of the Faction-only type races (Blissian, Coalwren, Barrakian, etc) and likely will make an NPC character or two that may or may not be part of our crew (such as the AI of our ship). You guys figure what/who you'd like to play for such a concept and hopefully we can get RP started. I think as a team, we can get the most fun RP-wise out of this.

Or post-dates the main story by several generations.  But pre-dates is better IMO 'cause it means you don't have to make up your mind about historic events involving cannon chars.

In any case, when considering who I'd like to play, my Goat character keeps coming to mind.  But I can't remember his name!  I searched and searched for the one RP I played him and couldn't find it.  ;.;  Maybe I'll go with Terry as a nod to Batman Beyond.  Was thinking of maybe giving him dowsing rod fists: a 6th sense of detecting villainy (lots of inside jokes there) and a plot proof skateboard and BMX.

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

Brainstorming scifi stuff.
Ethics of each tec.  Always a debate over LATEST tech, but rarely over older tech.  What level of tech in each field is available to each race, and when?  "Current Year" as a universal calendar.  Maybe rotations of a certain star around the galactic center?  CY - 12 means 12 years ago.  Genetic mods: can change DNA on the fly for a specific task.  Like BraveStar.  Cost is always a factor.  Maybe a face lift is cheap.  Or a complete face change.  I.D. theft = as annoying as losing your wallet.  no one sure who anyone is.  Look at comics & spy movies for powers then just make them more commonplace.  Interface: telepathic control of tech.  Even today most everyone is effectively a cyborg thanks to watches and cell phones.  High tech just takes it further.  Getting a cyber upgrade would be as simple as getting a new earring.  Travel tech: motorized / hover shoes.  Capsule Corp. cars.  With phasing.  Spirits as a matter of fact?  Astral projection commonplace?  "Safe" drug addictions.  Used to motivate workers.  Mining pulsar stars would be relatively easy given antigrav tech.  new materials made with atom smashers:  Made of Protons, Neutrons, Negetons, Dions, Spiritons.  Spirit has no weight / mass/ inertia and cannot be affected by normal matter.  What if sulfur were rare?  or oil?  No gunpowder or plastics.  Life extension tech: Just how close to immortal are people?  Tech jumps in history.  Eventually has to level out till the next best building material is discovered.  hybrid people: cannot reproduce.  Data bank of all possible genes.  Weapons tech.  Other ways to neutralize enemy besides just injury and destruction.  Germ warfare for example.

Teleporting:  Don't fuss 2 much over real physics.  Science FICTION is fiction.

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

Things a scifi series usually has/needs:
-Ships (and travel through space)
-Hover cars
-Neat gadgets
-Advanced looking settings (future cities)
-Alien worlds (even if the primary setting feels alien)

If I have teleporting as a common thing, and communications tech is able to send info instantly to any location with the same amount of energy over any distance, there is literally no need for ships. So must limit with high cost.

Teleportation: This technology is used for emergencies, such as when someone's life depends on getting to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. Ambulances will have teleport tech on board their vehicle. Or maybe a meeting needs to happen and a different meeting happens such that the person is like "GOSH I wish I could teleport" and such. Still can't be in two places at once.

(A note on Teleportation: Considering teleportation usually means disintigrating a person molecule by molecule and converting them into energy, what if a soul detaches from the energy being as a result? Delve on that more as we explore spirit tech)

(Thoughts: Maybe greater distance = greater requirements for energy/cost/etc)

Splitcon (Split-consciousness) tech: Like with the movie serogates, people can have a robot who represents them go someplace. The robot can be uploading its experiences remotely to the user's mind. For the old "have to be at two places at the same time". Personal robots are already expensive, but a "serogate" that matches what all you can do would be even more expensive.

Comtech: Communications uses quantum entanglment to cause data in one place to suddenly be "echoed" elsewhere instantly, no matter how far. It makes for a great way to secure data as well since you can have data storages that exist in random parts of the universe with unknown (to most) locations. Said data storages can be operated remotely by the person who has the entanglement codes (and the correct "spirit" imprint?)

Genmod (Genetics modifications): Highly expensive, but worth every penny, this tech allows the user to make from minor to complete alterations to their entire physical composition. For example; a minor alteration might be to make one's self stronger. A major alteration might be making yourself a hybrid of your race and another. A complete alteration could include change of race, gender, all of the above. As long as there is recorded data on the alteration in question, you can alter yourself accordingly. Minor alterations are available to the public as extremely expensive items (Like buying a car). All mods are tracked and anyone competing in sports or such are actually quite easily caught if they attempt to use an alteration against the rules.

/////ETHICS/////

Teleportation: Due to the idea that the soul could be separated from the body, some have decided to avoid teleporting altogether. However, due to how infrequently it is used by the common public (in most places), the issue doesn't bring much grief. Some places have fully embraced the technology, however. Coalwren, for instance, have no problem teleporting all over Coal just as often as they use cars or walk. The expense isn't much of an issue for them due to the fact one of the main components requires elements more common on Coal than anywhere else. Blissians are also known to use teleportation more freely than most, though not quite as much as Coalwren. Barrakians use it purely for planet-hopping rather than its more local uses due to culture. Aqualans have their own version of the technology that partly relies on psionics which allows the Aqulans to bypass a good deal of its usual cost. Despite this, they generally don't teleport as much as Coalwren.

Splitcon: Many people have problems with this. While it effectively lets you be two places at once, this can cause confusion in memory and has already resulted in some Splitcon addicts to develope psychological problems. For simpler things like allowing a robot to go to work for you, it seems safe enough. But when you begin trying to master many things at once, it starts getting dangerous. Regardless, even its safe uses are debated over and some want nothing to do with it.

Comtech: All races came to love comtech long before reaching the stars. The only real disagreement is how to go about communicating. Even then, it's more preference than need. Everyone communicates. A few races are more reclusive, but even they use Comtech of some kind.

Genmod: This technology is still hotly debated, despite having been completed 50 years ago. It came into full swing in the past 10 years, but some races don't even use it while others have outlawed it. This means people who are not in their original form are banned from some places, making this like "no smoking" areas, but to an extreme to where you could serve jail time. Thankfully, the only places it is banned are specific planets and sometimes just specific countries on specific planets. Every planet has a country or 3 that doesn't use Genmod. But some planets just don't use it no matter where you are on the planet: The planets who don't use it are Bliss, Coal, Fey, Sharr. The planets where it is banned are Barrak, Dachul and Grenu.

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

Some quick bits.

Trying to think that deep into the tech level/tech ethics scale of things is probably not gonna work out.  Chris already said it.  "Don't fuss 2 much over real physics.  Science FICTION is fiction."

Nearly impossible to cover all the angle, and adds more headache than not for a setting that looks like Buck Rodgers/Flash Gordon with midgets (or, not midgets.  Art styles/official stances on height always changing and all that).

I've heard some people complain how lots of Sci-Fi shows lack any 'real' religions (not just you two).  Well, aside from the 'trying not to offend X audience members' angle you also get into other things.  Oh look, you are currently considering that teleportation separates your soul from you.  Congratulations, in your attempts to stick to religion you have given everyone the ability to steal souls.  Don't factor religious aspects into technology unless you want a scientist reaching in and YANKING on something biblical. Or you wanted to work in a 'yup, Religious/Mystic aspects > Science.  Don't bother with science, even in Science fiction.' angle.  But if you try to do it the other way around, refer to 'Soul theft made easy'. For why that isn't any better.

Oh Death Star, we hardly knew yah.  All the majority of the fanbase goes on about is how badass the force is and hardly anybody cares about the technology of the Sci-Fi/fantasy setting beyond 'Don't touch my lightsabre, forceless heathen'.  People care about and treat with more respect and fear a glowstick than a planet buster. (I can hear Rick now, explaining why he can totally deflect a Death Star laser with his Lightsabre).

A 'less than stellar distances' range and it being impractical to teleport large amounts of people/objects could work out.  On planet transports for shipping would still be handy. (Transporters and transports.  Thanks english language you not confusing at all!)   You still have reasons for space ships everywhere, and they still take the fancy elevators everywhere on their ship instead of just going from transporter pad to transporter pad in Trek.  Probably best to treat Teleportation like Star Wars treats their FTL drives.  They are the things that get you from scene to scene, not the basis of an entire hour length episode.

Genemods, so far so good thematically?  Though 'Blissians do not use Gene mods' makes Zero Sense for the race that created sentient beings as a hobby.

However, from a Game standpoint planetary Banzors for Gene mods are just as bad as the Racial Flavor 'Fairy's take three month long naps every so often'.  Better hope it never, EVER comes up or oops that character is out of the game for the next RL year or so.

EDIT: considering the limited amount of setting knowledge, and limited amount of 'Primary, Important worlds/races', it would be good for you to list what planets DO work in Gene mods, if 6 of the Big Recognizable Names In Home Planets either do not use them, or outright ban them.

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

- Conversation on average height of races: /agree with idea of "short animals like mice should be short.  Tall animals should be tall."
- Thought on cross-race couples: hybrid children?  Are they sterile?  No offspring at all?  Kids are one species or the other?  My take would be: offspring at all very very rare.
- Faith / spirits: Metaphor for RL / emulating RL spiritual thought processes is problematic as Joe pointed out... and admittedly less interesting.  Perhaps create a brand new mythos only very loosely based on Earth ideas.  What if spirits were tangible, measurable balls of energy?  What if the 'seat of the soul' wasn't the brain but a specialized organ?  What if 'spirits' such as ghosts are just temporal echoes of past or future.  (Would explain ghost ships.  Ships aren't people with brains or spleens, so why would an apparition of one appear?)  Or perhaps ghosts are a manifestation of a part of the universe where the "veil" between the faction universe and it's antimatter twin is "thin."  Whatever the ultimate outcome, I agree that wizards > doomsday tech = facepalm.
- Teleportation / folding space: greater distance/mass(or volume) = greater energy required to teleport an object.
-Star mining for plentiful energy.
-Need antigrav/artificial grav tech.
-Selective Ban on gene mods: could be a great way for preventing unwanted "Colossus or Juggernaught strong?" type players.  Think of the legit within-the-rules 25STR D&D 3.5 charsheet.  If you take a Barakian, add some cybernetic enhancements and gene mods, you'll end up with charsheets like that.
- Teleporting bits of star into your ship's engine for power/propulsion.  Combining warp engines, warp gates, and various other ideas for FTL travel.  No need to be stuck on one idea for getting from point A to point B.
- 3 dimensional nature of space makes having strategic choke points kindof difficult to include.  Something to consider when thinking on the FTL travel issue.

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

First of all, thanks for the major, spammy input! XD Lots of good points made (especially on spirit tech). Along those lines, lately, Chris and I have been watching Thundercats (the 2012 series) and Mighty Orbots, both of which display sci-fi that when you think about it, is silly (or sometimes, doesn't even require thought to realise "wha?"). Great example is the latest episode of Thundercats had a flashback to Mumra's earlier years.

////Spoiler Alert!////
Mumra implodes an entire Galaxy in order to create an evil, powerful sword. Initially, my thought was "how creepy, cool, and amazing is that?", but on my way to work, I realized "Wait... if you have the power to implode a galaxy, why waste energy doing that just for a sword that, while powerful, doesn't remotely match that kind of power?"
////Spoiler Alert!////

In both Thundercats AND Mighty Orbots, there is spirit tech. Granted, Thundercats makes it a bit magitech while Mighty Orbots just makes no bones about it being pure tech that tampers with spirits/souls.

Examples include:
 1) In Mighty Orbots, space pirate turning a character's soul into a titan to fight the Mighty Orbots and then empowering that same spirit-titan with an anti-matter engine.
 2) In Thundercats, the Book of Omens is a technological database that has holographic tech, tracking tech, and is infused with magic and spiritual properties.
 3) In Mighty Orbots, the Galacic Patrol (basically the space police) have a manual override system for their automated defenses that involves 5 officers doing an "Aura scan", which can be interperated various ways, but if in aura isn't related to the soul, it at least can be interperated as such.

So in summary on spirit tech, keeping it tame such as "well we can sort of detect there is a soul" and such SHOULD be OK. Heck, it could be the main "ethical" argument over such tech would be that some would claim it's solid proof the spiritual exists while others would roll their eyes about it, saying it's nothing more than electrical pulses at best and snake oil at worst. Kind of like how people feel about Hypnosis and Lie Detectors today. Which in itself could be fun and even allow the audience to believe what they want about such technology while only I know for sure whether it actually "sees" souls or not. :) Even then... I could keep myself guessing rather than say for sure whether the tech can do such a thing (though I've very much made up my mind the spiritual exists in Faction).

////Side thought////
While I don't believe in the Big Bang or Evolution, it still makes for very cool fiction material (sci-fi or otherwise). It has its own ominous and awesome implications. Faction, however, has always been from a creationist perspective and I intend to keep it that way. Maybe I'll introduce a deity who isn't Jehova/Jesus/etc, but may as well be in purpose (created the universe). But regardless of what I decide in the end, I will enjoy writing the stories to have thousands of religions, atheism, the whole nine yards. And as I pointed out, on matters like this, nothing says even *I* have to know for sure who God is or whatnot in the setting. Though deciding the universe's age is relatively important since that dictates things like "is this relic really 400,000 years old?"
////Side thought////

Good point about Star Wars vs Star Trek. Though the ships and hovercrafts certainly put the sci-fi into Star Wars, you're still very correct.

Joe Darkthorne:
I can hear Rick now, explaining why he can totally deflect a Death Star laser with his Lightsabre

Chris and I laughed. :) But sadly, it's true. People argue about Death Star vs Unicron. Meanwhile, Rick argued his Marty-Stu could solo Unicron. I'm not kidding.

I like the idea of teleportation being expensive, high-energy devices that make it only cost effective when you're talking "beaming up" people out of danger (aka the emergency use I mentioned with the ambulance). Or in the case of long-range, it might be the ONLY way to get from one galaxy to the next (though some serious ships could have space-folding tech on board that allow the ship to teleport without the need of a gate).

Joe Darkthorne:
Though 'Blissians do not use Gene mods' makes Zero Sense for the race that created sentient beings as a hobby.

True, at first glance, it makes zero sense, but I've always had it that way. It's part of "bone wings" Carla's backstory. Blissians frown on "experimenting on a living sentient person", which includes yourself. Once you create something that is clearly sentient, it becomes immoral to experiment on them too. Think of it like this: You create Johnny-5. But since he has gained sentience, it feels akward to do any modifications lest your tampering mess him up or change him forever. The part that doesn't make sense is "but if they can't experiment on living things, how did they learn to make sentient life?" Well that's where the "living" part comes in. If the creature in question isn't alive, it's fair game for disection and such. And you can learn a lot from living specimens without experimenting on them (such as pet-scans).

But all that aside, I've been considering the "makes races" thing as a kind of "that's not normal for them" thing, even in a high-scifi setting. Mostly because I didn't dive too much into it beyond Bud and Lumin, who were created by two specific blissians.

Joe Darkthorne:
However, from a Game standpoint planetary Banzors for Gene mods are just as bad as the Racial Flavor 'Fairy's take three month long naps every so often'.  Better hope it never, EVER comes up or oops that character is out of the game for the next RL year or so.

XD I keep *not* thinking from forum thread perspective and just thinking from story perspective. Thanks for the reminder. I *DO* want the Faction universe to be useable to gamers, both video-game style and roleplay style. So it's good you remind me that. So hmm... here:

The planets who don't use Genemod:
-Bliss
-Coal
-Fey
-Sharr.

The planets where Genemod is banned:
-Barrak
-Dachul
-Grenu.

The planets where Genemod is OK:
-Aqula
-Gamma
-Neplusultra
-Zarox
(Base 1)
-Pirace
-Tavern
-Tharia
-(Base 2)
-Base 3
-Greenery
-Mercury II
-Gog
-(Flood Planet)
-Lone Planet

The planets where Genemod is used a lot:
-Circus Planet
-Emporium
-(Desert Planet)

This list doesn't include the Nikto system's planets, but I'll deal with that another time.

Mittens:
Conversation on average height of races: /agree with idea of "short animals like mice should be short.  Tall animals should be tall."

What he said. I plan to have it that bats are probably going to be the smallest bipedals at 2'6" or something while Barrakians will be the tallest bipdeals at around 7' to 8' or so on average. Granted, I'll have exceptions to the rules, like Fey and Giants, but for purposes of anthros, you can expect dogs to be larger than cats, who are larger than mice. It might not be as extreme as here on Earth, but it will be noticeable.

On the topic of hybrids, the idea of them being sterile makes sense AND helps with things like "well what's to keep a species from breeding itself out of existence?" heh. Which gives me an idea... an alien race that needs to breed with other races in order to have kids and they can't have kids from their own kind. XD But mad science ideas aside...

Mittens:

Irony: The real world is completely unfair and unbalanced in terms of roleplay or game mechanics. If one player plays a couch potatoe and another player places a military helecopter pilot, guess who's going to win? YET! Real life has produced something in modern history that puts *everyone* on equal footing. Take that same couch potatoe and make HIM the pilot while the military guy is not in his copter. Now who's going to win? Put a gun in the hand of an old lady and pit her against a young man who works out. If she shoots straight, guess who wins?

Chris and I LOVE this one quote from "The Incredibles" that the main villain said: "If everyone is special.. then no one will be."

SO! In regards to mods, cybernetics, etc... for purposes of gaming, all I need to do is set a bar "no higher than this" and people can play "equal to or weaker than this" if they want. But I still want to make some obvious advantages / disadvantages to playing a given race. If everyone is the same strength, Barrakians would have issues with that. As it is, their society demands they all compete with each other to be strong and/or enduring. So that's going to take a lot of thought to figure out how to avoid "oh hi! I'm an undead cyborg ninja barrakian" minmaxing without stripping races of their identity. I may love City of Heroes for "race is purely cosmetic", but that doesn't quite work in Faction. Especially when you get into things like the Grenu, who are quadrupeds. They simply CAN'T play cats in the cradle. It's physically impossible purely from their shape. Nevermind how much size factors into things. And since the races are going to vary in size a lot...

Mittens:

I like where this is going. It makes sense that, one way or another, seriously advanced civilizations would take advantage of the massive amounts of excess energy being jetisoned into space should be harnessed and used. Also consistent with the fact energy needs for things like FTL travel needs "more energy than powers a city for weeks" when the dandruff flakes that fall off a star every SECOND equals or exceeds such energy needs.

I like.

Anyways... thanks again for the feedback. All stuff to think on.

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

Holy cuppycake mushroom clicks, Batman!  Look who's talking with the page-long post!  XD  And why not haz lots of post-haz?  Faction is incredi-yay!  What makes it so yay?  For starters, it feels like Wall-E.  It's yuffie Sci-Fi while still being enjoyable for grown-ups.  It borrows yummie flavor from Sci-Fi giants such as Star Wars and Star Trek without feeling like a rip-off.  Earth is out of the picture, giving Faction an exotic feel.  It's not full of Independence Day, Aliens, Titan AE, etc type "We want to kill all Humans just 'cause" races.  The list goes on.

Specific points:  /agree blowing up galazy to make a zappy sword is "Wha?"  ...But still fun to watch.
Being vague about spiritual / mystical / divine stuff good.  But I recommend you nail down what is true and and real behind the scenes.
/agree with "making new races" = rare
On race: /agree with shelving game balance for a later time.  and /agree RL not fair.  LOTRO Elves < Tolkein's uber Elves in his books.  WoW Tauren < Warcraft III Tauren.  Uber races and characters in fiction are RARE / expensive to produce.  Translating that to a game where 1 player = 1 character means either gimping the PC version (Remember how much more powerful Yuffie was whenever NOT controlled by the player) like they did in LOTRO and WoW.  Or compensating by giving old ladys military helicopters.  Which would look silly in the Faction move... if there were scores of little old ladies with monster weapons running around.

Laws of Physics worth scrapping:
-Speed of Light constant.
-Time slowing when approaching Speed of Light.
-Mass increasing when approaching Speed of Light.
-Same laws of physics apply everywhere.
-Conservation of Matter & Energy
-No sound in space.
-Hurling big rocks or ships at planets at near-light speed should be impractical or bonking planets will be too easy.
Perhaps there's a unique material that breaks the Einsteinian laws.  Or reduces the inertia of things near it.  Need a hollow sphere field to explain normal stuff still working like heart still pumping blood while on non-inertia ship.

Faction Admin:
Why does folding space / warp / etc take time? The GM hasn't figured that out yet, so just play along for now. :p

Folding space.  Traveling without moving.  The illustration provided by Dr. Weir is 2 points on a piece of paper.  He folds the paper to bring the 2 points together.  So for folding space, you stay put, but it takes some time to fold the paper, "space."

Warp.  Stretching space around your ship so the speed of light is no longer an issue.  Imagine it like this.  You pull up your tube sock all the way up to your knee.  A spider wants to crawl from your knee to your heel.  So it engages the warp drive that scrunches the sock down.  He still has to crawl an inch or two to get to the heel, which takes time, but it's a muuuch shorter trip.

Hmm...  that's more like folding space.  Maybe a more accurate analogy would be a hex bug crawling on a table cloth.  Engaging warp drive is like lifting the cloth behind him so he starts sliding down much faster than he could ever crawl.

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

I'll be posting a "Video Game" thread. But for now, posting this here. Progress on racial mechanics, though keep in mind this is all early stages stuff. 10 is "average for the size category". So a Barrakian str: 10 is greater than a Bat str: 10. Believe me, this will actually make things easier for me to program since I will let the "size modifier" mechanic calculate values across the board.

NOTE 1: Hit points are only good for brawling. Pistols will do something like 20 damage. You get shot by a pistol, you go down. HP can be improved by personal force fields.

NOTE 2: The racial stats represent what you START with. In the end, all characters of all races can wind up with the same final results number-wise. It is simply a matter of what you have to work on and how long it will take.

/// Aqulan

Starting Areas: Aqula (Asho City)

Hit Points: 8 (Min: 6 Max: 12)

Strength: 10 (Min: 8 Max: 14)

Charisma: 10 (Min: 8 Max: 14)
Speed: 10 (Min: 8 Max: 14)

Special: Determined (attack for 6 seconds after unconscious), Flight (fly speed 10 with bursts of speed 20)

/// Barakian (Korshare)

Charisma: 8 (Min: 8 Max: 14)
Speed: 8 (Min: 6 Max: 12)

Special: Courageous (HP, Strength, Dex, and speed all increase the more dangerous the situation)

/// Bat

Just some thoughts from earlier today:

Certain alien races have alien senses ("Did you smurf that?" "What's smurf?" "You know... to smurf things!" now insert "smell" instead of smurf. Imagine trying to describe the sense of smell to someone who never had it.)

Some races communicate with lights and/or sound (Was imagining a race with a "Simon Says" board on their chest that lights up with sounds and different colors in order to talk)

Butterfly / Insect wings! Butterflies actually flap their wings like Manta rays. Insects in general do not have muscles in their wings; all wing activity is controlled at the base of the wings.

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

It has become clear to me that while I tend to run goofy light-hearted one-shots that wind up with my friends dying of laughter*, my preference on long-term and forum RP has always been drama, the catch-all genre. It allows action if you want it, but isn't focused around action. It allows comedy, but only to spice up or compliment the rest of the plot. It allows horror at key points, while not making that the whole point. And so on.

*Sorry, Will, you've only been part of my experiment stuff because online is such a different medium from live RP. I'll run something goofy for you some day if you like, though half my goofiness will be lost due to you not hearing me or seeing my expressions or physical movements. XD

As for character choices? I've got a bunch to choose from that aren't the canon cast and some that are the canon cast. I'll be narrowing these guys down later, but for now I need to tend to some things. K back from stuff. Narrowing down.

Aiu (Female Grenu oracle)
Note: A grenu gifted with prophecy and basic telepathy
Billy Bard (Male Blissian singer)
Note: I'd rather avoid lore clash/confusion
Drizzeleaf (Female Fae)
Note: Played her already. Was fun, but probably best as an NPC or GMPC
Emerald (Female Tavernian Fox)
Note: I'm playing Emmy in multiple places. Rather make room for other characters here.

Gavul (Male Deksharr Xenoanthropologist and Law Enforcement agent)
Note: Knows him his alien cultures.
Gavul ruled out due to inability to make a pic of him that I'd want to use for prolonged RP. This may change as I continue to draw.
K'shasa (Female Korshare Barrakian interstellar travel agent)
Note: Knows her way around the 'verse.
R'nar (Female Fou Barrakian heavy weapons merc)
 Note: Potentially overpowered
Star (Female Blue Fox hacker)
Note: Juros is blue and a techie, so my "blue techie" quota is met.
T'shock (Female Fou Barrakian all-around merc)
Note: I get my T'shock fill from D&D, actually

Y'naro (Male Blissian Trivia Expert)
Note: Lorekeeper on Bliss, good at research, Y'naro would be fun to play as the guy who randomly knows facts in a given situation. Alternately (or maybe at the same time), I was considering playing him as a blissian martial artist.
Zul (Male Coalwren Majescent Master / Mineralogist)
Note: Searching for his soul mate and the perfect fusion of body, mind and soul.
Zul was ruled out because he might not fit as well as the others into the setting Chris is thinking of going with.

Also if you or Joe want naming conventions for any of the Faction-only races, I posted such as a new thread. Enjoy.

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

srry my thread lost steam.  not sure what it would take for it to be jump-started back up.

as for what char i play?  See: why raymond didn't work out in SW.  generally need 2 play something super happy.  leaning toward racoon 'cause of the nostalgia blast i got from ffxiv pet.  https://i.ytimg.com/vi/u1Ky0XSLgYo/maxresdefault.jpg  i had a stuffed toy that looked just like that when i was little.

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

faction is glitching out for me.  other place, such as Tales of Thane: The Sapphire Rose display fine.  faction is mostly blank regardless of thread.  anyone else having this problem?

Edit: correction.  It's every page when using Firefox.  I.E. works.  Hate having to use I.E.  :(

Edit 2:  weird.  disabled ad blocker and restarted, problem solved.  re-enable ad blocker, rpol still displays fine, but yahoo mail has the problem now.  :/

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

Would like to play some Faction again. Could either continue a thread or two, make a new one, both? What is everyone's preference?

Re: Brainstorming SciFi stuff

Would also like to play Faction again.  If Australia Tim's up for continuing the Syncronizer thread, I'd like to see that mystery resolved.  If not, new story would be cool.  Especially one that focuses on your favorite Faction character: Angel.  ;)
